Three groggy servants and a peaceful old steward sitting at the table waiting for their breakfast. We started our days early, letting the young master rest while we prepared the day for him. I was already an early riser. I made sure to not break that habit from helping abuelo on the farm.
Sebastian and the others found this a bit new but they got used to it. Somehow Sebastian was always awake before me, sometimes I feel like that man never sleeps, but he looks so immaculate and well groomed. Not a single back under his eyes.
Placing a plate in front of each member of the staff, "Buenas días, did you all sleep well?" I greeted gently patting Finny on the back. His head bobbing up awake again.
The young blonde stifled a yawn, "Mornin' Miss Lucero. What's this?" He asked, poking at his plate.
"Smells good for wot ever it is!" Baldroy sniffed and took a mouthful.
"Huevos rancheros con frijoles, eat so you have energy for today." I smiled turning to fetch them all a glass of something to drink. I finally sat and began to eat with them.
"This is delicious, yes, it is! Thank you, Lucero!" Mey rin exclaimed between bites.
"Thank you, my grandpa used to make this for me when I was younger. I'm grateful I now have a kitchen to make it myself." I said taking another bite.
Knock on the door made us all turn to see the black clad butler at the door, "A pleasant surprise to see you all awake at the same time." He remarked, heading the kitchen.
"Ah, Sebastian, eat. We still have time." I gestured to another plate on the table. I don't think I've seen this man eat yet. He doesn't eat with the others from what I'm told.
"Thank you very much, Lady Lucero, however I had something earlier. I'm quite alright for the morning." He excused with a closed eye smile.
"Bueno, como te gusta, help yourselves to the rest, I'm full." I gestured to the others, Bard and Finny eagerly reaching for the extra plate.
I finished off and began to collect the plates, "Oh! Don't worry 'bout it, Lucero! I can wash 'em, right." Mey rin chimed, helping to collect the cups.
The day went on like any other. Typical chores, helping Finny in the garden when he started to get a little excited. Making sure Bard didn't try to cut corners, and helping Mey Rin doesn't lose her balance. I was finishing off the young master's midday tea when Sebastian approached me.
"Lady Lucero, would you be willing to accompany the young master and I into town. The young master has business there for a few days. I would very much appreciate the assistance in maintaining the town house as well as have you running a few errands." He said holding a neatly folded piece of paper.
I raised a brow and took a peak at the paper, "How many days exactly? Would I need to pack and would you like me to tell the others?" I asked, glancing over the list.
"Five days should be the duration of our stay. A small trunk of your belongings has already been sent to the town house, and I'm afraid out of all them you, my lady, are the most competent. The town house wouldn't be much of a challenge to maintain," He smirked, "or perhaps I am over estimating Lady Lucero's ability?"
I scoffed softly at his teasing comment, "My ability can never be overestimated, but thank you for the compliment," I mused softly tucking the list in my pocket, "I shall accompany, you and the young master." Leaving to get ready for the outing, not noticing the set of eyes following me out.
I stopped suddenly, 'Wait a moment. He said my belongings have already been sent. Ese maldito chavo se metió en mi cuarto.' I turned to glare at the tall butler but he was already leaving with the tea cart.
The carriage dropped me off in the marketplace, Sebastian said they'd return within two hours to retrieve me. That should be enough time to get started on this list of errands. It looks like some will have to wait for tomorrow, so I'll leave that to tomorrow's me. I've saved enough of my own wages, perhaps I can treat myself once I have a few things done.
'Ay como se me antoja un pan dulce.'
Well, first things first. The list. Mostly ingredients that have been running low. I can get that on the last day here so all it's fresh when we return to the manor. A few new household items that either Mey Rin, Baldroy, or Finny have broken, and ah, my request for a bigger pot. That should be fun to carry around. I'll save that for later as well.
A handful of the errands were completed and I still had half an hour before I am to be retrieved. I spotted a small stall nestled near the end of the marketplace. A certain smell is what attracted me. Sweet and very nostalgic, it made my stomach rumble and my heart ache. I made my way to the stall, spotting an elderly woman and what I think to be her son. He sat up from his spot on the ground, when he noticed me approach, "We got fresh sweets and dry goods! Prices are firm, so don't haggle with me lady!" The kid announced proudly, with his chest puffed up. I stared surprised and held back a laugh.
The elder woman shook her head, "Mijito no la asustes, no se vende nada con ése actitud." She spoke to the boy and looked up at me with a smile, "So sorry. He very small. He don't know." She spoke in broken english.
I shook my head, "No se preocupe señora, un actitud como el niño tiene, es bueno para los negocios." She smiled widely when I spoke to her directly.
I made a friend today. Rafaela had moved here five years ago while pregnant and had her son, Jorge. Mexico has been doing great economically, at least for the bourgeoisie. The working class and lower still suffer tremendously, so she left after her husband passed away just like many others. She had family in Mexico and keeps in contact with them and has helped others get in contact with their families as well. This gave me hope, I wanted to hear from abuelo, it had been months since his last letter. I feared the worst. I left her with a written message for Arturo Fernando Morales de Veracruz. With a promise to return to her every so often, I purchased a few items from the boy no haggling of course and made my way to the center to wait for the carriage. I was able to get some alegria and pan dulce.
I was glad I was able to get my sweets, because it would be the only thing to keep my nerves having to deal with an entirely unexpected guest.
