Chapter 8: I'd rather live one day as a lion than live a hundred years as a sheep

She knew this city, and these buildings, and these roofs like the back of her hand. That was her advantage. She knew the easiest places to jump from and the windows that she could go through. But the Lagorio men had done their research.

Dani had won the battle between her and the man in the fur coat. It was quick and decisive, but she didn't come out unharmed. The grazed bullet wound on her left arm was deeper than she thought it was as her blue sleeve was changing colors quickly. Though the blood across her face and dagger came from the fur coat man, a brutal death she gave him, slicing his neck open with force to cause as much pain, because Dani had a gut feeling that he had been the one to kill Maria.

However, the remaining situation was not much of an improvement. Her current assailant was much faster than the rest of the men who appeared after the fur coat man fell, keeping up with her no matter the distance she jumped between buildings or the open windows she went through. Dani saw the approaching business sector of the north, and the largest traffic intersection of Potenza in view, and while she didn't like to cause trouble for innocent bystanders, property was going to have to be damaged.

"You're slowing down young Vongola!" The man yelled practically in her ear, too close in Dani's opinion, as his fingertips grazed the ends of her hair.

"According to plan." She replied as the roof they were on came to an end. In front of them, a jump impossible to achieve, and busy traffic down below. Instead of taking the jump or stopping completely, Dani placed her foot on the ledge, pivoted a full 180° to face her pursuer, causing the man to abruptly stop thinking Dani had surrendered and pushed off the ledge to fall straight down to the city-life below.

"Shit." The man screamed shocked by the sudden action and the appearance of Dani, seconds later swinging across the gap by the electrical wire that she had cut on her way down. Her landing on the roof across the traffic was bumpy, landing in a front roll on the harsh material that pulled at the fabric of her dress and roughed up the skin on her hands and legs. But Dani quickly got to her feet, and without looking back, she continued across the rooftops towards the Southern Sector.

The canopy of the city seemed to come alive with color. Red, blue, green, and yellow appeared from rooftops like centralized fireworks that Dani had never seen before. She knew that she could produce small orange flames in times of anger but these were not small. They moved like they were alive, encompassing multiple areas some distance away. An explosion shook her foundation, shifting the unstable buildings from side to side. The Italian stumbled a bit before regaining her footing and jumping off the ledge to get to the next roof.

But a quick grasp around her ankle told Dani otherwise. Hitting the corner of the building with her ribcage, knocking the breath from her, she was pulled into the alleyway below. Trying to grab onto anything to stop her quick descent, the young Vongola hit a close-lid dumpster on her side. Yelping in pain at the popping of her right shoulder, Dani rolled onto her back holding her right arm only to be swiftly pulled from the top of the dumpster by the grip on her ankle onto the alley floor.

The blonde screamed as she landed in glass, a large piece slicing a large wound into the side of her leg, a pool of blood already beginning to form. "You are nothing more than a child." The grip around her ankle disappeared as Dani looked to see a man at the entryway of the alley catching the end of a long whip. "However if Boss says you're impor-"Pulling back his whip and sending it forward, he blocked an array of knives from above, sending them to tumble onto the floor.

A shadow overhead appeared and landed in front of the young Vongola. "Ushishishi~ there you are." Another shadow fell and she looked to see the green-haired Illusionist bent down behind her. "Oi Froggy, take the brat while I handle our new guest." The lopsided grin on the blond man's face seemed to grow as he twirled one of his custom knives between his fingers.

"Strategy Captain Squalo is going to be mad at you if you get distracted from our mission," Fran said though the Prince ignored him. Sighing he leaned closer to the small girl in front of him and moved some glass out of his way with his foot, not to cut himself or her even more, and maneuvered her body into a better position. Dani was halfly turned to the assassin just as the Lagorio man and Belphegor started exchanging blows.

"Time to go." An arm quickly went under her legs and another across her upper back. Lifting her into his arms Fran jumped along the fire escapes to get back to the roof as Belphegor laughed at his new target. Once back above the city lights, Dani watched as the Frog-Hatted man jumped across the roofs in an unusual manner, only to eventually run along the ledges of the roofs right above the busy streets.

"What are you doing?" The teen asked trying to hold onto his jacket with her blood-soaked left hand, as the blood from the bullet wound had finally made its way down, afraid that one misstep on his part will cause them to go tumbling down.

Fran released her legs from his grasp causing Dani to quickly wrap them around his waist to keep herself from falling while clawing at his jacket to stay upright. "They're illusions." The Mist Guardian replied presenting the weird silver knife she knew the crazy blond carried as his weapon. Tossing it to the middle of one of the roofs, it exploded. "But they're mediocre at best." He said finally glancing at her, face only a few inches away. "Wow…you look terrible."

The Boss of the civilian family narrowed her eyes at him. "And you look funny."

Fran shrugged his shoulders before lifting his hand to the side of his hat. He was silent for a moment before pulling her legs from around his waist and hooking his arm back under them. "Looks like your ride is here."

"My ride?"

"Yep." Running along the ledge of the roofs while traffic raced down below, the Illusionist stopped and held Dani a few inches from his chest. "Please be sure to rate your driver from 1-10." And with a thrust, Fran tossed Dani over the side of the building letting her fall to the ground below. A scream ripped through the young Vongola as she plummeted to the earth.

A gloved hand latched onto her left lifting her slowly in the air. "VOI Fran, I told you to wait!" With her right arm cradled to her chest, Dani took a calming breath to stop her racing heart before looking up at whom she knew to be the long white-haired man of the assassination group of Varia. But while he was the person she saw, another object caught her attention.

Gray in color and large in size, with blue flames emitting from parts of his body, Dani's mind went blank before everything started to register. "Shark!" Naturally jerking away from the creature, the girls' body curled up on instinct.

"Shit!" Squalo yelled as her blood-soaked hand slipped out of his. They watched as she fell towards the ground before disappearing in a flash of orange. "Fuck the Vongola Brat caught her."

"Strategy Captain Squalo you dropped her."

"It's not my fault she's slippery!"

Fran's eyes followed the remains of the orange flame around the corner of a building three blocks down as Squalo continued cursing up a storm as he reported the results to the Varia Boss. Looking down at his clothes, especially the arm that held her legs and the lower part of his jacket centered near his waist, Fran hummed at the amount of blood that was present. She'll be passed out from blood loss before she even made it to the hotel.

"Honesty that Varia." Tsunayoshi Sawada held tightly to the blonde girl in his arm. Though it was difficult to fly with only one hand to produce flames, he couldn't risk the time it would take to maneuver her onto his back, and even then the Vongola Don didn't think she could hold on. The granddaughter barely had a grip on him to begin with, one hand holding onto his jacket with white knuckles, the other held between them. "Dani, can you speak to me?"

Getting a small 'yeah' in returned, Tsunayoshi was decently satisfied. "Okay, here's the plan right now." He said loudly trying to talk over the wind. "Vongola Nono is waiting for you at the hotel. Once you are in his grasp, everyone will be called back to the hotel for protection until you are healed enough to make the trip to Vongola. You will be leaving Potenza within the next 48 hours, and we will try to get everything you want from the Southern Sector before then. If we can't get you out safely within that time span, you will be leaving with Reborn secretly at the 48-hour mark with no complaints."

Dani lifted her head from the older man's chest. Looking up at his face, that remained focus on the road ahead, Dani loosened her hold on his jacket. "Are you not going to fight?"

Tsunayoshi quickly glanced down before reverting his eyes back to the city. "Fighting will only lead to death, which is something I actively try to avoid. The Lagorio family may not be a large family, but they are aggressive in their tactics. And now that they have killed Maria, who was their only peaceful way of reaching you, they wouldn't care about killing a group of kids who have no affiliation to the Mafia to get to you, and with this plan, we're removing the possibility of them doing so because you won't be here. "

"What makes you think they won't kill them just because they can? We should fight the Lagorio to eliminate all possible chances of innocent deaths!"

Tsunayoshi sighed. "I understand how you feel, however, I believe this is the best possible path. I don't see the Lagorio Don attacking the citizens without the chance of getting to you. It would cause a public outcry from those unaware and notify the police-"

Their turn around the next corner was stopped short by a flash of purple. Tsunayoshi jerked back and staggered on the dying will flame coming from only one hand. "Vongola Decimo," looking up to see a man standing on a roof with a gun covered in purple flames aimed at the two Vongolas, Tsunayoshi sighed. "I'll be needing that girl if you don't mind."

Tsunayoshi looked down at Dani. "Reborn is somewhere nearby. Find him and he'll get you to the hotel. Don't stop to fight and don't get sidetracked." Maneuvering his hand wrapped around her, the Vongola Don quickly pushed Dani from his body as he dodged another Cloud-flame bullet and began his counterattack.

The blonde landed on a plaid patterned awning with a bounce before rolling off the edge. Twisting her body mid-air to land on her feet, Dani landed on a small plastic table that broke under the sudden weight. Falling forward at the unexpected drop she caught herself and leaned against an adjacent table as her vision blurred. However even after a few moments her vision never fully cleared but the battle behind her made her continue onward even with less than perfect sight.

Her body was sluggish and her feet heavy as she tried to run but the best she could do was a light jog at her maximum effort. With one hand out in front of her to help with depth perception and any objects that may mysteriously appear out of nowhere, Dani struggled to withstand her injuries and the situation at hand. Her Sector Heads either followed one of two options; keep everyone in the Southern Sector till the battle ended, or send everyone back to their respective sectors with strict rules and precautions. Honestly, she hoped it was the former because if everyone was sent back to their sectors, Servero wouldn't be able to hold back the temptation to send his men to the North or even himself to battle for revenge, to find her, and to keep Bellissa safe.

Dani couldn't feel the pain from her wounds anymore, no throbbing from her right shoulder or stinging from her leg, and the chill in her body just wouldn't go away. The chill, so deep in her bones, made her too tired to continue walking and the black in her vision just kept creeping in from her peripheral. Leaning against a wall and sliding down to sit on the concrete sidewalk, Dani curled herself up into a ball to scrape up some warmth, legs pulled up to her chest and forehead resting against her knees, arms tucked into her stomach and hair shielding everything from sight.

It couldn't have been more than a few moments before Dani felt something slid underneath her hair and gently but firmly grasp the back of her neck to lift her head up. Eyes unable to see anything but shades of light looked around slowly before landing on a large shadow to her side. "You're almost as bad as No-Good Tsuna, try to stay alive a little longer." She barely heard him and she didn't hear what he said, but Dani recognized his voice.

"…Reborn."

Reborn picked up the small girl into his arms with ease, leaning her head on his shoulder for support. Her eyes held very little life in them, the warm brown had turned dull and her body was ice cold in his arms. Walking around the scattered six bodies of the Lagorio family that he had shot down before they could get to her, Reborn turned down an ally where his car waited at the other end to bring her to safety.

Servero picked up each paper from the wood carven table in the living room of Vongola and Varia's hotel room carefully, sliding them into the large folder he brought with him. Tsunayoshi analyzed each paper one last time before they disappeared into the folder over his cup of coffee as everyone ventured into their individual conversations now that the emergency meeting had ended and the plan for the next 40 hours was underway. The morning sun has risen above most of Potenza's buildings and the morning rush of the civilians had started.

"For the last time, I'm fine." Gokudera grumbled trying to get the Northern Sector Head away from him as she continued to ask a variety of questions about his health and evaluating his arm for any bruising or infections at the venipuncture site he had performed on himself last night.

"If you answer my questions we wouldn't have to keep doing this. Now give me your arm so I can inspect the damage. And are you sure you don't have any diseases that you're hiding just cause your boss is here? Are you taking anything-"

"I'm clean!" Gokudera snapped, ripping himself from her and going over to the window to light another cigarette.

"Smoking is-"

"I'm aware it's bad!"

Yamamoto laughed at the situation before taking a sip of his own coffee. "Come on Gokudera, Bellissa is just worried. You did lose a lot of blood and she just wants to make sure you're okay and you didn't do something stupid like give Dani a serious illness because you did a manual blood transfusion on a whim."

"It was not a whim! She was going to die and I am the only one with the same blood type, I would have done that same thing for Decimo…if our blood was the same…" Tsunayoshi smiled behind his cup at the comment and looked around the living room. All three Sector Heads were here, however, Matteo was watching over Dani in her room with Nono, all the Vongola Guardians were present even though Hibari was in another room with the door open going over the files of the Lagorio family he had sent over, and Varia was half in the living room and half in the kitchen trying to find something to eat.

The previous night ended with little complication as Reborn had arrived with Dani in terrible condition just before 11, having notified Tsunayoshi in the car that he had acquired her. Vongola Nono, Xanxus, Mukuro, Chrome, and Gokudera were already in the hotel room by the time Reborn had arrived and upon inspection, the Storm Guardian gave a manual infusion of blood to keep Dani alive while Timoteo had made a phone call to get B type blood sent over.

However, not far into the transfusion, Bellissa had entered with a pint of blood to be transfused and had helped disconnect Gokudera from Dani, transfuse the pint of blood to her, and started cleaning up her wounds. Not long after that everyone had come back to the hotel, some staying up to watch over the room, and others went to bed tired from battle.

Matteo appeared at the entrance of the hallway gaining everyone's attention. Nodding his head with a smile he started back in the direction he came quickly followed by Bellissa and Servero. Tsunayoshi stood from his position on the couch and gazed at Reborn, who got up from his chair at the stare from his student and followed after Matteo tapping Ryohei on his shoulder as he passed by telling him that he was to follow as well.

Dani didn't acknowledge them when they walked in, nor her own Sector Heads, as she and Timoteo held eye contact silently, Timoteo having one of her hands held lightly in his as the sun came from the window behind him to lighten up the room. Bellissa sat on the other side of the bed causing the mattress to dip a little but it was enough for Dani to break the conversation she was having with her grandfather to glance at the caramel-haired woman. "What time?"

Bellissa opened her mouth and closed it unable to speak of the upcoming events. Tsunayoshi moved towards the chair beside Nono and sat down leaning back and lacing his fingers. "Maria will be laid to rest around 1'o clock today. Everything was already set up by her and Matteo was given particular instructions on how to proceed."

Dani hummed, hand still held lightly in Timoteos' and eyes cast to the ceiling. "And I'm not going?"

"No…you'll be staying here with Reborn and a few others."

Dani let go of Vongola Nono's hand and rolled over to face her Sector Heads lifting the blanket over her shoulders, her back towards both Vongola Bosses. Bellissa pressed her lips into a thin line as her eyes glistened with tear and crawled over Dani to lay behind her, head resting against her back as Matteo went to his knees and sat on the floor with his head beside Dani's, and Servero sat beside him, a hand sliding under the blankets to hold one of hers.

Timoteo grabbed his cane and lifted himself from his chair and smiled at the Mafiosi. "I think we should give them some time, yes. Ryohei please stay and heal her some more when she's regrouped and is ready to come out." Timoteo said ushering Tsunayoshi and Reborn out of the room as Ryohei closed the door behind them.

Starting down the hallway ahead of the two younger men Timoteo sighed. "Reborn you should teach your student to be a bit gentler even during times of impending war." The former boss commented.

The Japanese man straightened up at the light scolding. "I'm sorry Nono, I didn't mean to be so harsh-"

"Don't apologize to me." He replied before humming a small tune to lift the tense atmosphere in the hallway as Tsunayoshi yelped in pain as Reborn gave him a small punishment for his treatment towards the granddaughter.

In a small town just on the outskirts of Potenza, with the sun high in the sky, Timoteo stood shakily in silence. Beside him was a 6-foot deep rectangular hole, which would hold Maria for the rest of her time. Yet, the plot of land in front of him, with the old worn out gravestone is what had him unsteady. While barely readable he could make out the inscription with some effort:

R.I.P.

Nina Olivieri

Beloved Daughter and Mother

XXXX-XXXX

The overturned dirt had settled many years ago, grass has grown over in its place, and some dandelions and buttercups have sprout near the gravestone. Stepping to the side to not walk over the body in disrespect, Timoteo took out his handkerchief and wiped the dirt off of his daughters' name to make it more visible. Hearing footsteps approach, Timoteo peaked up from his work to see Xanxus standing at the end of the grave with his hands in his pocket and a face of indifference. "Is it time?" He asked going over the top of the gravestone clean it off as well.

"Yeah they arrived."

Nodding his head, Timoteo placed a hand on top of the stone for a moment before walking off to join the others for Maria's funeral. Xanxus watched his father closely to make sure he didn't fall, as he rejected using a wheelchair at such an important moment, before looking back at his newly informed sister's burial place to see an orange flame flickering at the top of the gravestone, symbolizing her as a Vongola heir for the first and final time.

The only ones present from Varia were Xanxus, Leviathan, and Squalo. The other three were ordered to stay back at the hotel and guard against any surprise attacks even with the argument that Reborn was staying behind and could handle everything himself. All of Vongola attended, with Hibari standing under a tree some yards away and Mukuro between Chrome and Yamamoto, under explicit orders to keep any snarky comments to himself.

A lot of members of the civilian family were present to see Maria laid to rest. Most late teens to adulthood and very few children with the attempt to wear as formal as an attire as they had. A hearse had arrived, and Matteo, Servero, and a few other people were taking out the casket as Timoteo appeared at Tsunayoshi's side. Bellissa was waiting directly across from Timoteo on the civilian side taking deep breaths to calm her teary eyes. As the boys walked by with the casket, Vongola Nono saw the unusual pall that laid over the beautifully designed wooden box. It was the traditional Olivieri colors and crest in the middle with a large lion's face resting above it. Timoteo smiled and gave a small chuckle; Maria was the true heir to the Olivieri family, born to rule and lead her family, and even in death she'd be damned if anyone ever forgot that.

Lussuria hummed as he finished decorating the plate of sliced apples, wiping his hands on a towel and taking the plate before walking out the kitchen, the Sun Guardian passed Fran and Belphegor at the kitchen table playing a game of cards that the Illusionist was losing miserably at. Reborn was reading in a chair in the living room as Lussuria passed him to the cushioned window seat to his right.

Dani sat legs pulled up to her chest and arms wrapped around her shins staring out the half-opened window watching the clouds pass by as a phone lay in front of her. Her leg and left arm had been bandaged and her right shoulder had been set back in place and iced that morning before everyone had left for the funeral. The plate of apples that the assassin had made was placed beside the phone as the older man gently scooped up Dani's hair in his hands with a whine. "You can't eat with all this hair in your face! You're almost as bad as Bel was when he was little."

A quick 'Oi' from the kitchen let Lussuria know that the blonde Prince had heard him.

"Now just let Auntie Lussuria put this up for you-"Dani reached for the apples but got pulled back with a jerk from her hair, "-before you eat!" Dani glared at the wall in front of her as the man cheerfully did her hair. "Oh~ we'll also need to have Boss give us money for shopping, you're going to need more clothes than that little dress you like to wear. Too bad it got ruined, but Auntie Lussuria knows how to get blood out of clothing~"

The Italian girl had put up a fight that morning about her current outfit of breathable cloth shorts and a tank-top as she refused to wear anything but her blue baby doll dress she had worn for years without fail, though the fight ended quickly once Timoteo gave her a stern 'you're wearing it' that didn't allow for any more arguments. Reborn kept flipping through the pages of his book as Lussuria continued his rambling as he finished putting the mass of blonde hair into a ponytail, letting Dani finally eat the apples in front of her.

A crash from the kitchen caused the three in the living room to turn to see Fran quickly walk out and dodge a range of knives coming at him from behind with the blonde Prince appearing at the entrance with a wide grin. "Ushishishi~ you cheat."

"It's not like you lost."

"You still used your illusions to change the face of the cards to get an advantage. The Prince deems that punishable by death for almost cheating him out of a win. Now stand still Froggy."

"I think I'm going to go guard the roof now-"

The urge to kill the Illusionist radiated through the living room as Belphegor ignored Fran's attempt at leaving the hotel room and let a few of his knives off in different directions to cut off all escape paths that the Mist user could use.

Lussuria ducked as a knife came at his head and embedded in one of the apple slices on the decorated plate, Reborn simply shifted his head to the side letting the weapon fly past him with ease, and Dani watched with mild interest as multiple images of the frog-hatted man appeared and ran around the room to confuse the angry blonde. It didn't work however as most Varia members could see through basic illusions.

But before Belphegor could land a blow on Fran, Reborn closed his book making everything come to a halt. Looking up at the two youngest Varia members from underneath his fedora, the illusions disappeared as Fran took a seat on the couch and the knives were put away with a pout from the Prince. "Your life is spared till he leaves the room Rookie."

"Good thing we're all stuck here till the Boss gets back." Belphegor clicked his tongue as he started to pick up his weapons around the room. Lussuria let out an exaggerated breath as he placed a hand on his hip.

"You two are going to get us killed. And not by the enemy!"

The Storm Guardian went around his fellow Varia member grabbing the knife stuck in one of the apples only to have a foot shoot out and hold the blade of the knife against the wall. Belphegor looked to the other blonde in amusement. "Shishishi~ you want to play?"

"Leave the apple."

"Oi the Prince doesn't take orders from a peasant." Lussuria gave another vocal sigh as he reached between them and took the apple slice off the knife and put it back on the plate.

"Honestly Bel stop instigating her." Dani dropped her foot and Belphegor continued around the room the pick up the rest of his weapons ignoring the man. Lussuria turned to the young girl with a reprimanding face. "And Daniela, stop acting like a child."

Reborn observed as the granddaughter stopping functioning mid-chew with a blank expression, not sure how to process being calling her full name. From the couch, he could hear an 'oh no' from Fran as Dani came back to live with anger in her eyes. Quickly standing up on the cushioned window seat, Dani pointed a finger at Lussuria. "Who are you calling a child, you old man!"

"O-Old…Old Man!"

A light tune rang through the room as all anger left Dani's eyes and face as she plopped down in her seat and quickly grabbed the phone in front of her. Accepting the call and putting it on speaker, the Boss of Potenza's civilian family gently put the phone back down and curled up in a ball once again, forehead resting on her knees.

"Many of us know that before she became the Madam of our family, Maria was the eldest daughter of the Olivieri family and its rightful heir. Though circumstances over the many years have led her to us, she has never once let us forget where she comes from and who she is." Matteo spoke through the phone as Dani looked out the window intensely.

"Whenever we were sad or stressful times had befallen us, Madam would sing us a song that was near and dear to her heart. It shouldn't come as a surprise to any of us that it was the song of the Olivieri family and as requested by her, as her death comes at a stressful time for the Boss and many of our family as we continue to fight against the Lagorio family, we are to sing her song for the first time alone, and for the very last time."

Closing her eyes, Dani took a deep breath as Matteo started to sing for the whole family to hear.

Sitting awake before the morning sun

Only 'cause I couldn't fall asleep while the night was young

I'm restless, can't call myself stressless

These past weeks have left me breathless and senseless

From how far her memory allowed her to see, Dani was always alone. Maria had always been there, but the loss of her mother always kept them apart. No going to the park, no eating out at restaurants, no public schools, no to being a normal child. And Dani realized quite early why she wasn't normal. The name Vongola had only appeared once in her childhood, and that was to tell her who she was. But Olivieri was a name that was mentioned every day, with grand details of honor and achievement. Dani knew that her grandmother had many regrets, but having that name was not one of them.

The song Matteo sang had many meanings Maria use to say. But there was only one that really mattered.

Sometimes it will feel time can stop

Sometimes I feel like giving up

But then I hear a voice inside of me

Saying: "Better die with your chin up, than living on your knees"

Daydreaming is ok sometimes

But to face the facts really hurts

And when you finally feel the weight of your burden

Get up again if you kiss the dirt

I'd rather live one day as a lion

Than live a hundred years as a sheep

I'd rather reign in Hell than serve in Heaven

Live my dream out in reality and not in my sleep

Dani knew her grandmother didn't beg to be spared last night. She had too much pride to belittle herself to worthless men. Even under extreme pressure, or terrifying conditions, Maria would have never let anyone else in control. And even in death, Dani knew that Maria still had the last laugh against the Lagorio family.

So…why was she allowing Vongola to go through with a plan she wasn't even allowed to advise on, or even know about. Dani wasn't a child that needed to be nurtured. She made a civilian family with hundreds of people, with sectors and specialties, and has the respect of all of her Sector Heads. Why did she listen to some Mafia Boss and stay behind in a hotel room than go and honor her grandmother who taught her how to lead.

She'd go with Vongola and leave Potenza like she promised Maria. But until then she wasn't Vongola…she was an Olivieri.

As Matteo finished singing, Reborn watched as Dani lifted her head from her knees and ended the phone call. The five of them sat in silence for a few moments as Dani turned her body around to place her feet on the ground and lift herself from the window seat. Reborn smirked underneath his fedora as they made eye contact and opened his book again. She'd made a decision.
