What Works For Us

"I had a good time," Regulus said softly, glancing up at Barty.

The taller man had insisted on walking Regulus home, despite the fact that they could have merely Apparated. It was sweet, Regulus thought.

He only wished he could appreciate it for what it was.

"I did too," Barty agreed, a sad smile on his face. "But I don't think you mean it the way I did, do you?"

Regulus sighed. "I wish I did. If I felt things like that—If I could love someone romantically—I hope you know that you'd be the only one for me, Barty. I do… I do love you. Just… not the way you want me too."

"I know," Barty said, squeezing Regulus' hand. "I know, and I don't mind. It's not… It's not perfect, but then what is? I'm satisfied with the way we are, Reg. You don't have to keep trying to force something that will never be there."

"I just want you to be happy."

"Who said I'm not?" Barty asked. "I enjoy the time I spend with you, both in and out of the bedroom. I enjoy the bond we have. Being aromantic doesn't mean that you're not mine, Regulus, even if it's not in a romantic way. Right?

"I'm yours in every way I can be," Regulus confirmed. "I just… I wonder if maybe you'd be happier with someone who can commit to you. Someone who enjoys the more affectionate side of a relationship."

"You need to stop worrying so much," Barty said, smiling slightly as they stopped outside of 12 Grimmauld place. "I'm happy. You're happy. What we have is working for us, so why change it?"

Regulus smiled. "Okay."

"I'll see you tomorrow.."

"Kay. Night, Barty."

"Night, Reg."

Barty waited until he saw the door close and then turned away. Part of him did wish that Regulus felt romantically towards him, but he'd long since decided that having Regulus—in any way he could—was worth more than any number of other people hanging from his arm.

And he hadn't lied. He was happy.

Apparating away, Barty was already making plans for their next… outing. It might not be a date, but it was just as important.

To both of them.
