Chapter 8
"Mount Sini Hospital"
Previously on Castle:
Detectives Beckett, Esposito, and Ryan had managed to find Castle just minutes before 3XK had him killed. With the help of Captain McBride and his team from the 3rd precinct, Captain Gates and the 12th were able to apprehend 3XK and his goons before it was too late. Rick was transported to the hospital where he was rushed into the ER for further observation. Martha and Alexis arrived minutes later, embracing Kate as she attempted to tell them what had happened. She started breaking down, the visions of him were too much for her to bare. Kate, "I just want him to be ok." Martha, "Katherine, he will be. (Voice Breaking) You found him, and he has so much to live for because you never gave up. Katherine, you are an amazing woman and I know you love my son and he loves you. All we can do is wait." Martha gently squeezes Kates hand as she gave a sad but thank you smile. Just then, the ER Doctor arrived with news about Rick.
Waiting Room
The ER Doctor arrives with news of Ricks condition. Doctor, "I'm Doctor Jacobson! Are you the family of Richard Castle?" Martha stands as does everyone else, "Yes! I'm Martha Rogers … his mother, his daughter Alexis, his Girlfriend Detective Katherine Beckett … everyone is also family." Jacobson, "Understood. Um … Detective, were you the one that found him?" Kate, "Yes along with my colleagues, Detectives Ryan and Esposito." Jacobson, "What type of object was he tortured with?" A flashback of Rick being hit with the steel pipes made Kate too distraught to even say what it was. Ryan stepped in, "A Steel Pipe. Actually, two long steel pipes. There were two men to be exact." Jacobson, "Hmm … that explains the severe trauma to the chest and stomach." Kate cleared her throat, "How bad was he?" Jacobson, "With the amount of blood he lost, he needed a transfusion during, and he'll need another afterwards. We took an ultrasound and he had a few broken ribs, and a punctured left lung. X-rays showed a broken right wrist and forearm, and left tibia. No head trauma other than some facial contusions and a split lip. His punctured lung, abdomen and upper right shoulder were the most critical being that he had a lot of internal bleeding, but we were able to stop that. No other organs were damaged. Now, he's still in the O.R. with the Orthopedic Surgeon so as soon as she's done, she'll be out to explain to you the severity of his injuries." He looked towards Kate, Espo and Ryan, "If you hadn't rescued him in time detectives, he would not have survived. He has a lot to live for and of course a long road to recovery." Martha, "Thank you Doctor." Jacobson, "Of course." Jacobson excused himself. Esposito, "I'll inform Gates of this update. Excuse me for a moment." Esposito texting, "Castle survived the first part of his surgery. He's in with the Orthopedic Surgeon. Will keep you posted." A sigh of relief and tears overcame Kate as the news that Rick made it through surgery, alive. He's alive and that's all that matters to her.
The Warehouse (Crime Scene)
With Rick in surgery and the rest of the gang at the hospital, Captain's Gates and McBride proceeded to further process the crime scene. Forensics did what was necessary to collect as much evidence as possible. The charges against 3XK and his men were building up. Gates, "Captain McBride, I want to thank you and your team for assisting in the rescue of our colleague Mr. Castle and the apprehension of Jerry Tyson. I can honestly say that we may have finally succeeded on putting 3XK behind bars for good." McBride, "It was our pleasure Captain. We're all on the same team here and it is our duty to protect and serve. I just hope we made it in time for Mr. Castle to survive such a traumatic ordeal." Gates, "Mr. Castle hasn't always been my favorite. Actually, he's been more of a pain in the ass, but no matter how I feel about him … he sure as hell did not deserve this. He has to survive!" McBride, "With the trauma he sustained, he managed to hang on this long Captain. He's a fighter! He'll be alright." Gates, "I sure hope so! I have to give a statement soon to the mayor with further information and a press conference but, in the meantime, will you assist me in the interrogation of Jerry Tyson? I sure could use your help if you don't mind. Detective Beckett has been through enough. The last thing I want to do is put her in a room with the man who nearly killed her partner." McBride, "Not at all Captain. Even if we can't get a confession out of him, we have the DVD footage and that's enough to put him away for 20 plus years." McBride moves aside, "After you Captain." As Gates was walking, her phone beeped, "It's Detective Esposito. Mr. Castle has made it through the first part of his surgery. He's in with the Orthopedic Surgeon. Will keep us posted." McBride, "That's fantastic news." She responds to Espo's text, "Thank you for the update Detective. Please let me know when he's completely out of surgery. Give my best to Detective Beckett and the Castle Family." Gates, "It is. With Mr. Castle surviving this horrible and terrifying moment in his life, he can testify and put 3XK away for good." With forensics taking care of the crime scene, McBride and Gates head to the 3rd precinct for further information from Tyson and his men.

The Waiting Room
The news was blaring with information of Rick's Kidnapping and Rescue …
WNYW – (FOX) – New York City
News Reporter – Good afternoon – I'm Leslie Porter. We have breaking news in the kidnapping and rescue of Richard Castle. Mr. Castle was transported to Mount Sini a few hours ago in critical condition. Live outside from the hospital, Jessica Andrews has a report.
Jessica – Good Evening Leslie. We're live from Mount Sini, where Crime Novelist Richard Castle was transported in critical condition. 48 hours ago, Richard Castle was abducted from an alley not far from his home. (Footage) Earlier this evening, Martha Rogers and Alexis Castle arrived in a private car to await news of Mr. Castle's condition. It is not known what the reason was for the kidnapping but that Captain Gates, Detectives Beckett, Esposito, Ryan of the 12th precinct, Captain McBride and his squad from the 3rd precinct assisted in the rescue of Mr. Castle and apprehended 3 suspects who have yet to be identified in orchestrating the kidnapping. A press conference will be given later on this evening by Captain Gates with more information. Back to you in the studio."
Leslie – Thank You Jessica. In the meantime, our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Castle and his family.
Esposito lowers the volume on the television … "We don't need to hear this right now." Just as he had placed the remote down on the table, his phone beeps. Reading text, "It's from Gates." Everyone looks over to him, "She sends her regards to Beckett and the castle family and wants an update as soon as he's completely out of surgery." Martha, "Sweet of her. Thank her for me." Esposito, "I will." Kate's standing in the corridor with Lanie, explaining everything that happened. In disbelief … Lanie couldn't grasp what was going on. All she could do was be present and support her best friend during this crucial time. Kate, "I'd wish the surgeon would come out already and let us know what's happening." Lanie, "Honey, it's a process. Everything needs to be done right." Kate sighs and just as she was about to speak, the Orthopedic Surgeon arrives with an update.
The 3rd Precinct
McBride and Gates arrive to the 3rd precinct to begin the interrogation process of 3XK. As soon as they enter the bullpen, everyone gives them a standing ovation for the teamwork that Gates and McBride gave in finding and rescuing Castle. McBride, "Thank you but this standing ovation should not be just for myself and Captain Gates, but also for each and every one of you. With your hard work and dedication, Mr. Castle would not be with us. We took an OTH to serve and protect, and we will continue to pursue justice as we should. We do have news that Mr. Castle has survived the first part of his surgery. He's currently in with the Orthopedic Surgeon. As soon as we get an update, Captain Gates will provide that information through the press conference later on this evening. At this time, Gates and I thank you all … the 3rd and 12th precincts for your service." An applause erupts as McBride and Gates head to the interrogation room for answers. Deep breaths are taken before entering. McBride," Alright … it's now or never." He opens the door for Gates, "After you." She smiles and proceeds … McBride follows. As the door closes from behind, Gates and McBride come face to face with the man and known serial killer who nearly killed one of their own.
Interrogation Room #1
Both Captain's walk over as Tyson is sat, handcuffed to the table smiling, "Hello there Captain Gates. To what do I owe the pleasure?" He looks over towards McBride, "Who might you be?" McBride, "Captain McBride of the 3rd precinct which happens to be where you are. But enough with the pleasantries." Gates leans in, "I suggest you wipe that smug look off your face and understand that we're not here to make nice. You sir … have no idea what lies ahead. After what you did, after what your men did, there's no way in hell you're going to get away from this." He continues to smile, "Oh I beg to differ. You see, I'm not saying a word until my lawyer is present." He leans in, "Besides … I have no idea what you're referring to." McBride steps in, "Evidence, pure concrete evidence is present. Do you understand! This is not hearsay, this is not due process, this is real. You sent videos of a man you had kidnapped from an alley and tortured him until he was nearly dead. There is video surveillance of the van, tire treads, and blood! So, if you think your lawyer is going to be able to get you off without any consequences, you are sadly mistaken." Gates and McBride head out to the next room to speak with their other suspect.
Interrogation Room #2
McBride once again proceeds to open the door for Gates. Walking in, Gates proceeds, "Mr. Thompson. You sir are no stranger to the system. Your record mind you a very thick file shows so, so much. What do you have to say for yourself Mr. Thompson?" Matthew, "I have nothing to say without my attorney present." McBride, "Ok. Be as it may Mr. Thompson, you are being charge with multiple counts which include kidnapping. We know why Tyson recruited you and if you talk to us, we'll make sure the D.A. knows of your cooperation. This is a One Time Offer." Thompson leans in, "Go. To. HELL!" Gates, "Ok. Have it your way. Enjoy prison." McBride and Gates leave the room.
Back at the Hospital
Waiting Room
As the surgeon arrives, everyone stands. Operating surgeon, "Are you the family of Richard Castle?" Martha, "I'm his mother. How's Richard?" Surgeon, "I'm Doctor Davis, certified Orthopedic Surgeon on call. Mr. Castle is doing well. Both surgeries were successful and he's now in recovery." A sigh of relief came from everyone. Especially Kate as tears ran down her face. Davis, "I came to give you all a status of what my team and I did. His injuries were pretty severe, but we were able to place some screws and pins within the right wrist, shoulder and forearm. A fractured left tibia, pins were placed in with an iron rod. He's going to have some severe bruising around his abdomen and chest area. As soon as his injures are within the healing process, physical therapy will take place but as far as Doctor Jacobson and I are concerned, he's going to make a full but painful recovery." Kate, "When can we see him?" Davis, "Soon. I'll have a nurse come get you once he's settled." Martha, "Thank you Doctor. Could you also thank Doctor Jacobson for his part in saving my son." Davis, "I will, and it was our pleasure. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask." Davis departs from the waiting room as everyone lets the good news of Castles surgery sink in.
Back at the Precinct
McBride's' Office
Gates and McBride were on the phone with the Mayor giving their statement in regard to Ricks abduction, rescue, status of his condition and of course, 3XK. Mayor, "Captains, you have both made outstanding choices and decisions on capturing 3XK. What can you tell me of that sort?" Gates, "He's in with his lawyer as we speak. The evidence is legit mayor and I can assure you that he'll be put away for a very long time." McBride, "His hope for release is not in the cards mayor." Mayor, "Captains, make sure you do and understand that because as far as I'm concerned, he'll do whatever it takes to get away like he always does. I want a legitimate answer by the end of the day." Gates, "The A.D.A. is all over this one." Mayor, "Good now what's the status on Richard Castle? Any news?" McBride, "Detective Esposito messaged Captain Gates earlier that Mr. Castle survived through the first part of surgery. He was still in with the Orthopedic Surgeon. I'm sure we'll have an update soon." Mayor, "Fantastic. Captain Gates, I'm sure you'll have an update by the time you get to the hospital for the press conference?" Gates, "Yes sir." Mayor, "Ok. I'll be watching. Stay safe and thank you both for your service. It's a pleasure to be working with you both. Take care." As the call ends, Officer Johnson knocks and walks into the office, "Captains, the A.D.A. would like a word in the conference room?"
Conference Room
Gates and McBride head out to find A.D.A. Toni Gonzalez." Gates, "A.D.A. Gonzalez, great to see you again." Gonzalez, "Pleasure is all mine. I just came from the 12th. I went over the evidence, and it's all crystal clear … he will be charged on multiple counts of kidnapping and attempted murder … he's going away for a very long time. Congratulations, you've managed to capture 3XK and hopefully this time, he'll be locked up for good." McBride and Gates smile and McBride speaks, "We thank you for your assistance A.D.A. and we'll be there to see the process done." Shaking hands, A.D.A. Gonzalez excuses herself from the room as Gates and McBride proceed towards the interrogation room to give the bad news to Tyson.
Interrogation Room #1
As they walk in, Tyson and his lawyer sit arguing about what lies ahead and the charges that were being filed against him. Gates and McBride smile as they both stop to look over. Tyson, "What are you both smiling at?" Gates leans in, "Well … we spoke to the A.D.A. and as far as we're all concerned except for your lawyer here is … that you my dear … will be going away for a very long time." Tyson glares at Gates as McBride stepped in, "You thought you had us fooled, didn't you? You thought that you could get away with EVERYTHING that you've done. How stupid could you be … sending videos of all things … with your face, your voice … pretty much you 100% present in them? Yah we had tech check everything and all is legit." Tyson smirked, "Well, at least my plan did work. Castle is gone and nothing else matters." Gates looks to Tyson's lawyer, "Did you not tell him?" Defense Lawyer, "I hadn't really gotten to that yet." McBride, "You see Mr. Tyson … your plan … the plan you worked so hard to map out … didn't work. Mr. Castle did survive this … whatever you want to call it. He's ALIVE … and at this point, there is NOTHING you can do about it." Tyson charges from his seat but is stopped by his handcuffs attached to the table, "I will have my revenge one way or another. Prison won't stop me. I PROMISE you!" Gates, "A threat! I'll be sure to add that to the list as well." Gates smiles as she and McBride leave as officers try to control him from any further outbursts as they drag him away to his holding cell. McBride, "Alright … we need to head out. Status check on Mr. Castle and Press Conference. Better to be prepared then not to." Gates smiles as she and McBride head straight to the hospital.
Hospital
Waiting Room
It's been at least two hours and the waiting was just becoming impossible until … a nurse finally arrived. Nurse, "Castle family?" Everyone stood up. Nurse, "Mr. Castle has been settled in his room and can have visitors but only 1 at a time." Martha looks to Kate, "Katherine?" Kate looks over as Martha speaks, "Give Richard a kiss from us." Kate hugs Martha and Alexis as she proceeds to walk with the nurse to see Castle.
As Kate is escorted off to see Castle, Esposito steps away to give Gates a Call. (Gates Answers), Gates, "Detective, how's Mr. Castle doing." Espo, "He's completely out of surgery. Beckett has been escorted off to see him. His injuries we pretty extensive but both surgeons were successful keeping him alive." Gates, "I'm glad to hear that Detective. McBride and I are in route to the hospital for the press conference. I appreciate you keeping me posted. If you and Detective Ryan would like to join us, please feel free to do so." Espo, "I'll be present sir and I'm sure Detective Ryan will be as well. Martha Rogers thanks you for your kindness sir." Gates, "She's most welcome. I will see you both in about 10." Espo ends the call and walks over to Ryan. Espo, "Hey, I just spoke with Gates. She and McBride are on their way. She asked us to join her for the press conference." Ryan, "Yeah definitely." Espo, "Ok, lets head out."
Espo and Ryan walk over to Martha and Alexis. Ryan, "Ladies, we're heading out to the press conference. Captains' Gates and McBride are heading over and should be here within the next few minutes. Call us if you need anything." Alexis, "Javi, Kevin … thank you for being here. You both have always been good to my dad. I know he'd appreciate it." Javi and Kevin hug both Martha and Alexis before departing to the press conference.
Rick's Room
The nurse led the way as Kate followed. Her heart began to beat faster as they became closer and as she walked in, her anxiety settled as she saw him for the first time. Nurse, "He's been in and out of consciousness, aware of his surroundings, a little under the anesthesia but other than that, his vitals are good. I'll leave you to be with him." Kate, "Thank you"
Kate walks over to Castle's bed and as she does, tears slowly fall down her face as she sat by his side. Knowing that just hours ago, she nearly lost him to a psycho serial killer. His arm was in a sling and his leg was carefully placed on a pillow for support. She placed her hand on his as he laid there … more tears fell from her eyes, thinking of just what might have happened if she and the boys hadn't gotten to him in time. She closed her eyes for a moment and as she did, a sleepy Rick steered awake to see a scared Kate with teary eyes. He gently squeezed her hand to calm her and as she opened her eyes, a blue-eyed Richard Castle was looking right at her. He smiled, "Hey Beautiful." She sighs in relief as the tears continue to run down her cheeks, "Hi Handsome." She leaned in to kiss him, crying uncontrollably … a sleepy Castle places his hand on her cheek to wipe away tears from his loves face, "Everything's going to be ok." She nods, "I was so scared at the thought of losing you." She placed a hand on his face, "Rick, I love you … more than I ever thought I could." He smiles, "I love you too." She placed a gently kiss on his forehead as he drifted off to sleep.
Kate relaxes as she wipes the tears from her face. Seeing Castle and knowing he's alive … made her feel at ease. She closes her eyes for a moment, when her phone beeps. (Looks at the screen), A text from Alexis, "Gates giving Press Conference on NWYN in 5." Kate takes a deep breath and turns on the television.
Outside of Hospital

Breaking News
News Reporter – Good Evening – I'm Leslie Porter. We have breaking news from Mount Sini Hospital where a press conference is taking place this evening. Our reporter Jessica Andrews is there live right now. Jessica!
Jessica – Good Evening Leslie. We are here in front of Mount Sini waiting for Captain Gates of the 12th precinct to give us an update on what may have been an extremely devastating ordeal for the Castle family and what will happen to those who were involved in his abduction. It looks like a patrol vehicle has pulled up with Captain Gates and it looks like Captain McBride of the 3rd precinct is also in attendance. It looks like they're both ready. Let's listen in.
McBride and Gates both nod to Ryan and Esposito as they make their way to the podium. Gates clears her throat as McBride stands by.
Gates – "Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Thank you all for coming. I'm Captain Victoria Gates of the 12th Precinct. (clears throat) The last 72 hours have been extremely rough as one of our own was abducted, tortured and nearly left to die. Richard Castle has been with the 12th as a consultant for the past 4 years. He's helped our department solve numerous cases, save lives and is considered a part of our family. Mr. Castle was rescued before any further damage could be done on his life. Detective's Beckett, Ryan, Esposito, Officers from the 12th, Officers and Detective's from the 3rd led by Captain Jason McBride worked as a team to find and apprehend the people who in fact did this. We as Law Enforcement Officers, took an OTH to serve and protect. We will continue to follow that road and make this city better. We know you all have questions as to who did this and why. The why is still unclear but we do have who in custody.
(Gates takes a deep breath) Known Serial Killer Jerry Tyson has been arrested for the attempted murder of Richard Castle. Captain McBride, myself and every single officer surrounded an abandoned warehouse outside of Yonkers were Mr. Castle was being held and badly beaten. He and his men who were part of the abduction have been brought in and are being held without bail. As of right now, an investigation is in progress and any further details will be brought to light soon. I'd like to thank all of those who were part of this mission, especially Detective's Beckett, Ryan and Esposito – they were the ones that pulled their weight because they know 3XK inside and out. I'd like to thank Captain Jason McBride and his precinct for their hard work and dedication. It was his team that helped led us to the abandoned warehouse to complete our mission. At this time, we will be providing police protection to both Mr. Castle and his family for precaution. Captain McBride, would you like to say a few words?" He nods with a smile as Gates steps aside.
McBride – "Good Evening everyone. I'm Captain Jason McBride of the 3rd precinct. I'd like to say that we all were determined to apprehend those who abducted Mr. Castle. Making the right choices in getting him home safely was our high priority. Like Captain Gates said, "We took an OTH to serve and protect. Putting people like 3XK away is what we will continue to do. Your life matters! You will always matter to us. We send our utmost support to his family that he makes a full and speedy recovery. Captain Gates, is there anything else you'd like to add?" Gates shakes her head in response. McBride continues, "Detectives Ryan and Esposito, and Beckett who's not present at this time, I'd like to say thank you. You three have done a marvelous job working this case. We appreciate all that you do." Ryan and Espo nod their head in response of gratitude. McBride, "At this time we will take a few questions."
Reported #1 – "Captain, why wasn't the public notified of the 3XK killer?"
Gates steps forward – "Due to the sensitivity of this case and given the fact that Mr. Castle was on a time limit, it was in our best interest to focus on the case then to scare the citizens of the city of New York. Yes, 3XK is highly profiled as a notorious killer. He was fixated on one person – Richard Castle and his family were a mere target. Multiple DVD's were sent to the 12th precinct of Mr. Castle being tortured, and we were given 48 hours from the time those videos were played or else things would take a turn for the worse. We had to play our cards right in order to make the right decisions. My best Detectives were put on this case."
Reporter # 2 – "Captain, how severe were Mr. Castle's injuries? How far did 3XK go?"
McBride – "Mr. Castle sustained severe trauma to the abdomen leading him to lose a heavy amount of blood. He was beaten multiple times leading to multiple broken bones. He had 2 major surgeries and is now recovering with the help of his family. We'll take one last question."
Reported #3 – "Captains, what's going to happen now? What's the process to put 3XK away for good?"
Gates – "McBride and I have both of our Forensics Teams on site gathering and processing evidence as we speak. Every piece is critical in this case and both precincts are continuing to work together to get the proper evidence through the justice system as quickly but thoroughly as possible. The A.D.A. is in the processes of pressing charges on all those who were involved. Since we are in the middle of an investigation, we cannot disclose anything further. That's all the time we have. Thank you."
Jessica – At this time Leslie, both Captains have provided information on Mr. Castle's abduction and rescue, apprehension of the suspects who happens to be notorious serial killer 3XK. With an investigation in progress, no further information will be released until everything has been processed. We are beyond grateful that Mr. Castle is safe and recovering. Our prayers go out to him that he does make a fast recovery. Back to you in the studio.

Rick's Room
Kate turns off the television after watching the press conference. Relieved that things are progressing through as they should, her main focus was Rick. Looking at her watch, she realized that she needed to head back to the waiting room and give Martha and Alexis a chance for a visit. She looked over to find Castle still sleeping. She smiled as tears fell from her face. Happy tears of course. She leaned over to give him a kiss on the cheek, whispering in his ear, "I'll be back later. I love you." Heading to the door, she took one last look at the man she loved, smiled and headed out.
Hey Guys - I know it's been about 6 years since I've written anything. I've just been living life these days and busy with work. Anyway, I've had Chapter 8 stored in my computer for a while now and figured … "since I have some time to write, why not." So here you go … Enjoy.
