Chapter 16
Earth-64
To say that the Kal-El of this universe wasn't an all-loving Boy Scout superhero was the understatement of the century. Sent to Earth as an infant due to the destruction of his home planet Krypton, Kal-El's ship crash-landed in a field in Smallville, where he had been found by billionaire Lionel Luthor. Having decided to adopt Kal-El, Lionel had named him Clark Luthor and raised him alongside his biological children, Lex and Lutessa. Due to Lionel's ruthless parentage, Clark had grown into a cruel and domineering individual, eventually creating his alter-ego Ultraman and accumulating a massive body count that included a large number of meta-humans, other aliens who had arrived on Earth, adversaries of the Luthor family, criminals, and anyone who so much as got a glimpse of Ultraman's face. Clark had also murdered his adoptive brother Lex in cold blood after the latter had tried to permanently strip him of his powers with gold kryptonite.
One day, Clark Luthor had been mysteriously transported to an alternate Earth, where his doppelganger had been raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent instead of Lionel. At the same time, Clark Kent had been transported to Clark Luthor's world due to the mirror box in Kent's world, which Kent had accidentally activated, causing them to swap universes. Wanting to stay on Kent's Earth to escape his father Lionel forever, Clark Luthor had intended to destroy the mirror box to eliminate any chance of being sent back to his universe. However, before Luthor could do so, he and Clark Kent had been transported back to their respective universes when Kent had activated the mirror box on Luthor's Earth.
A few months after his trip to Kent's Earth, Clark Luthor's secret identity and vulnerability to kryptonite had been exposed to the public by his longtime enemy and former classmate Oliver Queen. Clark had murdered Oliver in retaliation, resulting in him becoming the most wanted man on the planet. Not wanting to remain in a world where the whole world knew his weakness and how to kill him, Clark Luthor had then escaped to Clark Kent's Earth using his mirror box, but this time they hadn't swapped places since Kent's mirror box had been destroyed. Clark Luthor ambushed Kent in the latter's barn and sent Kent to the former's Earth. Luthor had then sought out his adoptive sister's doppelganger Tess Mercer, threatening to kill her unless she helped him kill his Earth's Lionel, who had escaped to Kent's Earth a few months ago. Tess seemingly agreed, but when she had chosen to protect Lionel by hiding his true location instead, Luthor felt betrayed and almost killed Tess, who had been saved by Clark Kent. Kent led Luthor to the Fortress of Solitude and offered Luthor a chance of redemption, convincing him to return to his world and change people's minds about him. Seemingly accepting Kent's offer, the Fortress transported Luthor back to his universe, where he was greeted by his biological father Jor-El, who was once more active after having been deactivated for years by Lionel.
After spending several weeks in the Fortress learning more about Krypton and the rest of the universe, Clark Luthor had returned to Metropolis and attempted to turn over a new leaf as a superhero, even donning a uniform with the House of El symbol on it. Unfortunately, no one was convinced that the mass-murdering supervillain had changed and rejected him. After a confrontation in his Fortress with Chloe Sullivan, Cyborg, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter, who were all vengeful due to Oliver's murder and tried to kill Clark with weapons enhanced by blue kryptonite, Clark ultimately won the fight as he brutally mudered all four of them, at which point he had completely turned his back on the redemption that Clark Kent had offered him and returned to his old ways, even getting rid of the House of El emblem on his suit and reverting to his Ultraman persona. He had also turned his back on Jor-El and once more deactivated the Fortress. After all, since the world continued to treat him as nothing other than a monster despite his efforts to change, he would be a monster for as long as he lived.
Seeking to destroy as much kryptonite as possible and maintain dominance over the planet, Clark had sought out several other individuals with special powers and skills that would be useful in aiding him in his cause. These individuals included – Andrea Rojas aka Superwoman (who went on to become Clark's wife), Thomas Wayne Jr. aka Owlman (twin brother of the late Bruce Wayne), Eric Summers aka Inertia (the team's speedster), Cameron Mahkent aka Icicle, and Claire Selton aka Volcana. Together, Ultraman and these selective group of individuals became known as the Crime Syndicate, although some also referred to the most feared and powerful individuals on the planet as the Injustice League or the Legion of Doom.
Clark Luthor aka Ultraman was soaring through space after hovering near the sun for a few hours, which was something he did daily. He soon approached Earth and descended into the planet's atmosphere. On the way down to the surface, he spotted a black figure flying in the distance. Narrowing his eyes suspiciously, he saw that the figure was a woman garbed in some kind of black suit with a cape behind her and a mask that covered much of her face.
Intending to find out just who this woman was, he flew directly towards her and stopped as they hovered a few feet from each other. They were very high in the air, hovering above the clouds.
Blocking the woman's path, Ultraman crossed his arms in an imposing manner and glared at her.
"Who the hell are you?" he demanded in an authoritative tone.
"No one else will interfere with my mission!" Reign growled, before activating her sound attack.
Ultraman grunted and clutched his ears in pain as the sound waves struck him. Losing his balance, he fell a few meters before straightening himself.
"You're gonna pay for that, bitch," Ultraman snarled, clenching his fist angrily.
Reign flew down at him, but Ultraman avoided her as he flew above her. He charged at Reign, ramming into her as she was sent flying many meters back. He flew after her and punched her, sending her falling diagonally. Before Reign could recover, Ultraman flew towards her and punched her again, sending her crashing clean through the top of a building as it became heavily damaged on impact.
Straightening herself, Reign turned around and saw Ultraman flying down at her. She unleashed her heat vision and Ultraman did the same. Their beams clashed halfway, struggling to overpower the other. After several seconds, Ultraman's beam pushed Reign's beam back and she was knocked a few feet back as the blast hit her face.
As Reign recovered, she flew at Ultraman at full speed, but he flew sideways, avoiding her attack. She then hurled multiple punches at him, but Ultraman dodged and sidestepped them all. With one swift move of the arm, Ultraman backhanded Reign in the face, sending her crash-landing on the ground in the middle of a street, forming a crater where she landed.
Ultraman flew down towards Reign, who fired her heat vision at him. He swerved as he avoided the beam and continued flying down towards her. He grabbed Reign by the neck with one hand and lifted her off the ground.
"Tell me who you are and where you came from," Ultraman ordered, as Reign struggled to breathe in his powerful grip. "I can't have anyone with powers who's not a member of my Crime Syndicate roaming freely on this planet."
In response, Reign reached out and scratched Ultraman in the face with her Pestilence claws, causing him to grunt as he released her and held his face where he had been attacked. Reign unleashed her sonic scream, hitting Ultraman dead on as he was sent flying several feet back. He landed on the sidewalk, heavily damaging it as he held his bleeding ears in pain. The scratches on his face were also bleeding out.
"There will be nothing but fire, smoke, and ash on this planet after I've completed my mission," Reign sneered. "But first, I'm gonna kill you."
"Not if I kill you first," Ultraman retorted, as he stumbled back to his feet. He felt a bit dizzy for a moment, but shrugged it off.
He and Reign slammed into each other, the resulting shockwave shattering the windows of nearby buildings and flipping over most of the vehicles in the vicinity. Ultraman punched Reign in the face twice and delivered an uppercut under her chin, knocking her hundreds of feet up into the air. He flew up after Reign and grabbed her by the cape, spinning her around many times before throwing her many miles away.
Reign crash-landed on top of a boulder in a wooded area, shattering it into pieces. She got back up as Ultraman appeared and swooped her up before throwing her down on another rock, shattering that one as well. He descended and punched Reign in the face repeatedly, knocking her mask off her face, which was now marked with multiple cuts and bruises. He picked Reign up again and threw her across the woods. She crashed into a tree, destroying it before she fell on the ground.
Ultraman flew over to Reign, hovering above her. Before he could do anything else, he groaned and clutched his abdomen as a sickness started coming over him.
"What's happening to me?" Ultraman groaned.
He noticed a small scratch on his hand, frowning as he wondered where it came from. He then touched his face, realizing that the scratches still hadn't healed for some reason. He needed to get to the sun to get rid of whatever was affecting him.
His thoughts were abruptly interrupted as he was knocked down by Reign's sonic scream. He stumbled back to his feet, only to be hit with Reign's sonic scream again, sending him flying back and crashing into a tree. He recovered as he saw Reign leaping towards him with her fist heading for his head. He rolled out of the way at the last second as Reign's fist collided with the ground instead.
He got back up, still feeling sick but was pushing through it. He threw a punch, but Reign blocked it and punched him in the chest, staggering him back. Reign then brandished her claws, trying to scratch Ultraman in the chest, but he backed away to avoid her attack. She tried to scratch him again, but Ultraman grabbed her arm with one hand and punched Reign in the face with his other hand, staggering her back too. He then kicked her in the chest, sending her flying several meters back. He bent over, placing his hands on his knees as he panted heavily.
"I'm losing strength," Ultraman muttered in realization, wiping sweat off his forehead with the back of his hand.
Reign recovered and flew at Ultraman at full speed. He flew up, narrowly avoiding her attack. He leapt down at Reign, tackling her to the ground as they struggled against each other's strength. Due to the Pestilence virus weakening Ultraman's strength and speed, Reign was now able to keep up against him. He head-butted her forehead, knocking her head back slightly though it wasn't enough to make Reign let go of him. In retaliation, she head-butted him in the nose, causing it to bleed, but he didn't let go of her either. Reign then kneed Ultraman in the abdomen, and that did the trick as he let go. She stood up and kicked Ultraman in the face, sending him flying many feet back and destroying yet another tree as he crashed into it.
"I'm pissed," Ultraman snarled, as he got back up and wiped blood off his face.
As Reign flew at him, Ultraman slammed his hands together, producing a powerful shockwave that sent knocked her many meters back and damaged many trees in the vicinity.
Ultraman flew straight up in the air at full speed as Reign pursued him, also flying at full speed. They shot past the clouds and quickly reached outer space, at which point the scratch marks on Ultraman's face and any other cuts and bruises he had received completely healed due to being much closer to the sun. The sunlight healed Reign's cuts and bruises as well.
"That's more like it," Ultraman smirked, feeling his strength rapidly return to its full level.
He hovered in place, purposely allowing Reign to catch up to him. Reign tried to ram into him, but Ultraman sidestepped her attack at the last second. He charged at her at full speed, grabbing Reign and tackling her through space. He tossed Reign towards the moon and she crash-landed on the surface of it.
Ultraman flew to the moon at full speed and descended near where Reign got back up. She fired heat vision at him, but he avoided the blast before ramming into her hard, sending her flying a few hundred feet back. He flew after her as Reign brandished her claws and swung at him several times, but Ultraman dodged her attacks and grabbed her arm. He then head-butted her in the nose, breaking it and causing it to bleed.
"Now we're even," Ultraman said.
He slammed her down on the moon's ground and punched her in the face thirteen consecutive times, dazing her badly as her face was once more marked with bruises.
As Reign tried to stumble back up, Ultraman got behind her, grabbed her head firmly, and snapped her neck. He released Reign's head and her body fell face down, eyes wide open as they stared without seeing.
"Hm," Ultraman smirked, staring down at his opponent's lifeless form. "That felt good. Been years since someone put up this much of a fight against me,"
He watched as a bright reddish-orange light emanated from Reign's body. A few moments later, her body disintegrated into nothingness.
With a look of satisfaction, Ultraman flew away from the moon and descended towards Earth.
Earth-38
(Barry's apartment)
After Barry, Conner, and Kara had foiled the plans of a young woman named Olivia and her Cult of Yuda Kal that involved creating a fourth Worldkiller, the former two heroes were preparing to leave.
"So I guess it's time for us to head back to Earth-1," Barry said, as he was carrying his two duffle bags on either shoulder.
"I wish you didn't have to go," Kara said, sadness in her voice. "This past year with you... I wouldn't give it up for anything."
"This isn't goodbye," Barry promised, smiling and placing his hands on her cheeks. "If it makes you feel a lot better, I am leaning towards 'yes' as to whether or not I'm gonna move here, but I need to think more on it and properly prepare for it."
"Take as much time as you need," Kara nodded in understanding. "At least we could pay each other visits in the meantime."
"Yeah," Barry nodded in agreement. "No matter where we are, whether it's just across the street and thirty-seven Earths across the Multiverse, you'll always be with me, Kara Zor-El." In a teasing tone, he added, "Or was it Kara Danvers?"
He and Kara chuckled at his joke before they shared a kiss.
"I love you, Barry," Kara said, holding back tears.
"I love you too, Kara," Barry replied, blinking as he was also holding back tears.
As Conner watched Barry and Kara, he was reminded of his own romantic moments with Courtney as he held back tears that threatened to fall as well.
Kara turned to Conner and pulled him into a hug. "Goodbye, Conner."
"Take care, Kara," Conner replied, before they let go of each other.
Kara opened a breach with her extrapolator, and Barry and Conner went through it.
Earth-1
(S.T.A.R. Labs)
Barry and Conner entered the cortex and saw Cisco, Caitlin, and Joe at the computers. The latter four looked up, eyes widening in surprise at the sight of the two newcomers.
"Barry," Joe called out happily.
"Hey, Joe," Barry grinned happily, as they threw their arms around each other in a bear hug.
"Hey, Cisco, hey, Caitlin," Conner greeted, as he gave them each a hug.
Barry also gave Cisco and Caitlin each a hug.
"How was everything on Earth-38?" Joe asked.
"We defeated the threat the Speed Force warned me about, so everything's good," Barry said. "How's everything here?"
"About that," Cisco said.
"What?" Barry asked.
"For the last couple of months, we've been dealing with a rogue speedster calling himself Godspeed," Caitlin explained.
"He's been running around terrorizing the city and brutally killing criminals in cold blood," Cisco explained, as Barry and Conner exchanged glances, noting that was the same thing that Reign had done. "Wally and Jesse are out pursuing this guy as we speak, but he's faster than both of them."
"Guess Conner and I returned at the right time," Barry pointed out. "This Godspeed won't see us coming, which puts us at an advantage."
"Time to suit up," Conner stated.
"I got the ground, you got the skies," Barry said, and Conner nodded.
(Elsewhere)
Wally West and Jesse Quick each threw a lightning bolt at the white-clad speedster known as Godspeed, who sped around as he effortlessly avoided them. He sped towards the pair, knocking Wally and Jesse many feet back in opposite directions. Wally landed on top of a nearby car, while Jesse fell on the ground.
Godspeed sped over to Jesse and picked her up by the neck with one hand. He then vibrated his other hand and was about to plunge it into Jesse's chest when a powerful blast of lightning hit him in the back and threw him to the ground. Godspeed recovered and got back up. A stunned look appeared on his face as he saw that The Flash had appeared.
"Flash, I wasn't expecting you to show up," Godspeed announced in a deep, distorted voice.
"That's kinda the point," Barry replied. "It's over, Godspeed."
"Far from it, on the contrary," Godspeed countered. "Not even you can match the power of Godspeed, but you're welcome to try."
Barry, Wally, and Jesse sped after Godspeed. While Wally and Jesse were struggling to catch up to the white-clad speedster, Barry had no issues catching up to him and swept Godspeed's feet from under him. Godspeed tripped and went flying as he crashed into a light pole. Getting back up, he ran up to Barry and punched him in the face, knocking Barry a few feet back. He tried to punch Barry again, but Barry dodged and punched Godspeed under the chin, knocking him several meters in the air. Godspeed recovered and he and Barry traded several high-speed blows as Wally and Jesse joined the fight.
Godspeed punched Wally in the chest and elbowed Jesse in the face before hurling a punch at Barry, who blocked it and punched Godspeed back. Godspeed steadied himself, but before he could resume the fight, a blast of heat vision hit his leg as he groaned in pain. He turned around to see Superboy flying towards him.
Godspeed sped around in circles for several seconds and hurled a lightning bolt up at Conner, who was hit dead on but merely dazed for a few moments. In retaliation, Conner slammed his hands together, producing a shockwave that launched Godspeed across the street and sent him crashing against a building and falling to the ground. Conner flew up to Godspeed and punched him in the face, rendering the rogue speedster unconscious.
"He's out," Conner said, as Barry, Wally, and Jesse appeared behind him.
Barry reached down and pulled off Godspeed's mask, revealing the face of a handsome Caucasian man with brown hair.
Conner widened his eyes in shock. "What the..."
"What?" Barry asked, as he, Wally, and Jesse frowned at Conner.
"He looks a lot like Lex," Conner said, incredulously. "Well, Lex if he had hair. Who is this guy?"
(Later, S.T.A.R. Labs)
"Our latest enemy speedster's name is August Heart," Cisco stated, as he and Caitlin were seated at the computers, while Barry, Wally, Jesse, and Joe were standing around them. "He had a brother named Jorge, who was murdered five years ago."
"Jorge Heart," Barry said in recognition. "I knew him. He used to work for CCPD until he was killed in a line of duty. The murderer was never brought to justice."
"That explains why August used his powers to play judge, jury, and executioner," Conner said.
"How did he become a speedster?" Wally asked.
"August was struck by lightning, guess when, on the night of the Speed Force storm and was presumed deceased ever since," Cisco explained. "But as we know, the latter was not the case since he got powers from the lightning struck instead of being killed."
"Thanks to Lyla, August is now making himself at home in a special cell in A.R.G.U.S. where he won't be doing any more killing with his powers," Barry said. "So that's a win."
"So is our boy here to stay this time? We have to know," Cisco said.
"Well..."
"Don't say it," Cisco cut Barry off. "Don't tell us you're gonna leave again."
"No," Barry shook his head. "No, I'm not leaving. I'm here to stay. At least for the time being."
"What do you mean for the time being'?" Joe asked.
"I, um..."
"You're not thinking of actually moving to Earth-38, are you?" Caitlin asked.
"Maybe, but nothing is set in stone right now."
Caitlin narrowed her eyes. "You've fallen in love with someone there, haven't you? And that someone happens to be a blonde who flies around a lot and punches out supervillains." The look on Barry's face was more than enough to confirm Caitlin's suspicions. "I knew it."
"Wait, you and Kara are actually 'together' together?" Cisco asked, surprised.
"You could say that," Barry nodded, beaming at the thought of Kara. "Which is why I'm considering moving there, but I need time to think about it first."
"Whatever you decide to do, son, I'll be happy for you," Joe assured Barry.
"I know you will," Barry nodded in agreement. "But until then, this is my home."
"So what now?" Wally wondered. "Barry and Conner are back and Godspeed's defeated, so... does this call for a celebration or something?"
"You know what, Wally, that's a good idea," Barry agreed. "It has been a long since Team Flash went for a night out just to have some fun. Drinks will be all on me."
"I'm absolutely down for that," Cisco said.
"I don't mind either," Conner added.
"I don't have anything planned tonight," Caitlin said.
"You can come with us if you want," Wally said to Jesse.
"I actually need to get back to my Earth," she told him.
"Okay," Wally nodded, feeling disappointed but respecting Jesse's answer.
"Let's start getting ready," Barry said, as he and the others exited the cortex.
Earth-64
(Hall of Doom)
Ultraman and the rest of the Crime Syndicate were gathered in the main room of the headquarters.
"Who was that you were fighting out there?" Andrea Rojas asked.
"Whoever she was, she's the first person in years to somewhat put up a fight against me," Ultraman replied. "Needless to say, it didn't end well for her."
Owlman, who was sitting at the computer, brought up footage of Reign appearing in the middle of the street in a flash of blue light. "Take a look at this traffic camera footage." The others gathered around him as he replayed the footage and everyone watched as Reign appeared. Turning to Ultraman, Owlman said, "Judging by the flash of light your opponent materialized out of, she's clearly not of this planet."
"She did seem to possess the same powers as me, in addition to her sound-based abilities and her finger claws that not only penetrated my invulnerable skin but also made me feel sick and weakened until the sunlight healed me," Ultraman explained.
Andrea clenched her fists in anger. "I should've been out there with you and gave that bitch a taste of my fists! She could've killed you, Clark! No one puts a hand on my husband and gets away with it!"
Ultraman placed a hand on her shoulder. "Relax, Andrea, you know I had it handled. She's dead now, so she won't be a liability anymore."
"Any idea where she came from?" Inertia asked.
"There are a number of possible locations that flash of light brought her here from," Ultraman stated. "She could've come from another planet, she could've somehow escaped from the Phantom Zone, she could've even came from a parallel Earth."
"Wait, you're saying the parallel universe theory is true?" Inertia asked, incredulously.
"It couldn't be truer," Ultraman stated, producing a knowing smirk. "Speaking of which, I can't help but wonder how Clark Kent is doing these days. I wouldn't be surprised if the country Boy Scout still haven't figured out how to use his wings."
"That's because your doppelganger is weak and naive," Andrea said, placing a hand on Ultraman's shoulder. She and Owlman were the only members of the Syndicate who were aware of Ultraman's journey to another Earth. "You're the real deal, he isn't."
"I was a fool for actually buying into his little speech about redemption," Ultraman said. "He assumed just because we're the same person that I had it in me to be an idealistic goody two-shoes just like him. World domination and getting blood on my hands before lunch are much more exhilarating than playing Good Samaritan, something Kent could never understand."
"I'd be more than thrilled to break his neck if I ever met this Clark Kent guy," Andrea said.
"Clark Kent is mine alone to kill if I ever run into him again," Ultraman insisted in a tone that left no room for argument. "In fact, it's high time we found a way to pay his Earth another visit."
"How are you gonna do that considering the device that sent you there has been destroyed?" Andrea asked.
Ultraman smirked. "Reactivating a certain ice castle containing dear old dad might just do the trick."
Unknown Location
(Three weeks later)
In a chamber surrounded by nothing but outer space, Mar Novu, also known as The Monitor, stood before the pair of unconscious figures lying on what looked like mattresses. One of the figures, a blonde young woman who looked no older than twenty or twenty-one, was garbed in mostly blue uniform containing a white star on the chest and three smaller stars on each arm. She also had on a red belt, along with a pair of red gloves and matching boots. Resting beside her was a long golden staff with a white tip. The other figure, who was also a blonde woman and looked like she was in her early thirties, was garbed in a black leather suit.
The two women moaned as they came to. The first thing they noticed upon opening their eyes was the star-covered outer space above them.
"Courtney Whitmore, Dinah Laurel Lance, welcome back to the land of the living," Mar Novu greeted them.
The two women sat up in their cots, looking up at the tall, imposing figure with bewilderment written on their faces.
"Who are you?" the older woman in black asked.
"Am I dead?" the younger woman in blue, red, and white asked.
"My name is Mar Novu, but you may call me The Monitor," the tall figure introduced themselves. "It is expected that both of you are very confused right now and have many questions, but everything will make sense once I've explained everything."
That concludes this fic, though the "Alternate Events" series is obviously far from over. Thank you to everyone who took the time to read and review this story, as well as favorite and followed it.
The numbering of Clark Luthor's Earth is a reference to Ultraman and the Crime Syndicate making their comic debut in 1964. In Smallville, it was called Earth-2, but that designation won't work here for obvious reasons.
Given the gap in strength between Smallville and Arrowverse Kryptonians, it was pretty obvious how this battle was going to end. But due to Reign also having Purity's and Pestilence's powers, it was entirely one-sided.
The members of Earth-64's Crime Syndicate are Clark Luthor/Ultraman, Andrea Rojas/Superwoman (doppelganger of Angel of Vengeance, who appeared in an episode of Smallville), Thomas Wayne Jr./Owlman (twin brother of Bruce Wayne, who is dead on Earth-64), Eric Summers/Inertia (speedster doppelganger of the kid who took Clark's powers via kryptonite and lightning in the early seasons of Smallville), Cameron Mahkent/Icicle (who appeared during Smallville Season 9), and Claire Selton/Volcana (many know her from the DC Animated Universe, but this is a Smallville adaptation of Volcana).
Regarding the plot with Olivia and the Cult of Yuda Kal in Supergirl 3x19, a variation of those events happened off-screen since there was no need to cover them here.
In this verse, Godspeed is portrayed by Michael Rosenbaum, who played Smallville Lex and voiced The Flash in several animations. That's why Conner reacted the way he did upon seeing Godspeed's face. In fact, there were rumors a couple of years ago that Rosenbaum would play Godspeed in the Arrowverse, but it never came to pass. Also, unlike in canon, this Godspeed is from the present instead of the future.
As for the final scene, I decided to bring a couple of characters back from the dead. Their return will be explored more in the next story of the series, which will take place right where this one ended.
