A/N: Introducing my take on what Kirishima's parents might be like! Hope you like them as OC's. Let me know what you think and how you suspect this summer vacation is going to go!
Meeting the Kirishima's
It was one week into summer vacation, and Hana was sure she was going to die from nervousness.
The past six days had been spent in a haze. The kids were released from the dorms to spend time with their families for a few weeks before the mandatory summer camps would begin. Hana went home and was surprised to find that her mother had moved back in. Things had never been stable between her parents, and she had been positive that a divorce was imminent after the students were moved to dorm housing last year. But, on the contrary, her parents were happier than she'd ever seen them before.
"You guys don't have to pretend to like each other," she'd said over dinner one night, "if it's just an act until I finish school and get a place of my own, I mean."
"Pretend?" Her father had looked shocked, his silver eyes wide and confused. "Kinuhana, we've always loved one another," he said.
"We just haven't been very good at communicating that," her mother had agreed.
"Or communicating at all," her father laughed.
It was one of the happiest weeks of her life, being home again with them and seeing them so close and warm. Part of her wanted to stay there in that week forever. But, another part of her… the part that kept her up at odd hours of the night giggling at her phone screen, and had her whispering goodnight to a computer camera after her parents had fallen asleep… that part of her was anxious for the week to end because that meant a new week would begin. A week with Eijiro Kirishima.
It was about a month ago that he'd asked her if she wanted to go with him and his parents to their river cabin for a week during the summer, and her instant and automatic response had been "no."
"Yeah, kinda figured you'd say that," he'd laughed. "Thought it wouldn't hurt to ask though."
He hadn't looked disappointed per se… rather, he'd looked resigned. Like he'd never had much hope to begin with. She didn't like that. She hated the thought that he was so used to her shying away from his propositions that he didn't even get excited about the prospect of doing something fun with her.
So, two days later, she squeezed his hand and kissed him on the lips and said, "Of course, I'll go with you."
But she'd made that choice and told her parents about it before the pool party. Before the night on her balcony and their after-curfew swim. Before her confusing nights of fantasizing and subtly rejecting Eijiro's attempts to be intimate with her again. Before trying to sort out her embarrassing new hair color and even more embarrassing desires.
Now, the thought of seeing him filled her with trepidation. She was simultaneously excited and nervous. They'd been talking since school let out and things were good, but they hadn't talked about the stuff that went on between them.
She'd wanted to talk about it before today because she couldn't imagine anything more awkward than living with him for a week with the elephant in the room, but every time she tried, she choked up. And every time he was in the same room as her, trying to get close again, she freaked out. She just hoped he didn't think she was avoiding him. She hoped he understood that she was trying to find a way to communicate her feelings before their week-long trip to the mountains.
Now, it was too late. Today was the day. Any minute now, Eijiro would show up at her door to walk with her to the train station. The thought made her stomach twist into knots. Spending a week with him outside of school? Meeting his parents? Am I insane? What if they don't like me? What if the entire week is awkward and I'm stuck there? Or worse, what if his parents leave us alone with each other?
She cursed at her reflection in the mirror, inwardly groaning as she watched several strands of her hair turn pink.
She threw her suitcase open again and scanned over the contents. She'd already packed and unpacked it four times. She went over the list she'd written for at least the fifteenth time, swearing she was forgetting something.
Toothbrush, toothpaste, brush, scissors—wouldn't want my hair getting too long again—deodorant, and… the cute bra and panties set that Shibuya bought me…
She blushed. She'd already taken the undergarments out and thrown them dramatically on the floor twice, just to put them back in, buried under the rest of her clothes.
"Hana-Chan, Hana-chan… if you can't tell him how you feel with words, then do it with your body~"
She knew she didn't have the nerve to do something like that. Especially with the lacy, red garment set that Shibuya had given her. Why did she have to pick red? As if wearing them at all wouldn't be embarrassing enough.
At least it wasn't a thong or some kind of see-through lingerie. Her friend had gone for something at least somewhat modest. Still…
She had the unwarranted image of Eijiro blushing, his eyes taking in her body in the underwear, his lips parting in desire, and his hands reaching for her.
"Nope. Not taking them." She fished them out and was just about to toss them in her drawer when the doorbell rang. She gasped and buried them once more. "I'll get it!" she yelled, horrified at the thought of one of her parents answering the door.
Too late. She could hear her mom inviting him inside. She pushed through her bedroom door and dragged her suitcase out as quickly as she could. By the time she was in the living room, Eijiro was already inside and introductions underway.
"It's an honor to meet you," her boyfriend was saying, bowed respectfully before them.
"It's good to see that boys these days can still have manners," her father commented, approvingly.
"K-Kirishima," Hana said, using his surname since they were in front of her parents.
He straightened up immediately and grinned at her. His smile was infectious, and she caught herself grinning back. She took an extra moment to appreciate his casual attire. A black shirt under a light red jacket, shorts, and… were those sneakers name-brand?
Based on the slight color that touched his cheeks, he was appraising her too, in the shorts, tank top, and light cardigan she was wearing to beat the summer heat.
"Kirishima," her dad said, suddenly.
Oh no, please don't do the angry, protective dad thing. She grimaced and looked at her dad's hair. Still blonde… Well, that's a relief at least.
"Y-yes, Mr. Kanzashi, sir?" He bowed again.
Her dad stepped forward immediately. Eijiro flinched, as the man suddenly started pulling on the spikes of his hair.
"Dad!" Hana screeched. "We talked about this! You can't just touch people's hair whenever you want to!"
"I'm a salonist, Hana, I can't just ignore my calling." He narrowed his eyes and plucked a hair from her boyfriend's head. "What brand of dye are you using? Please tell me it's not off the convenience store shelf. You're clearly frying your hair. Honey, can you get the crimson dye set from my office?"
"Not yet!" Her mom shook her head, having noticed a hole in the pocket of Eijiro's jacket. "Take that ratty thing off, I'll fix it for you. Honey, I'm going to need a bit of your hair."
Hana put her face in her hands. "I begged you guys not to embarrass me and this is what you do?"
Then, to her astonishment, Eijiro let out a loud laugh. "To be honest, Mr. and Mrs. Kanzashi, I was really worried about meeting you, but you guys are awesome!"
"Well, we were thrilled to meet you, Red Riot." Her dad chuckled and ruffled Eijiro's hair. "You've made a name for yourself out there. Plus, you've broken Hana out of her shell a bit, and we owe you for that."
"Nah," he blushed. "Kanzashi did that on her own. She's brave like that."
Hana blushed at the unexpected praise, then cleared her throat. "Mom, dad, we have a train to catch, so…"
"Right." They both stepped away, though she could tell that each parent was trying really hard not to poke and prod at his hair and clothes.
"Listen, Kirishima," her dad said. "Don't you dare let anything happen to this girl on your watch, do you hear me? You're responsible for her safety this week, and if anything were to happen to her…" the tips of his hair started to turn red from anger while the roots went white from fear.
"Dad, calm down." Hana walked over and placed a hand on her dad's arm. "You get way too emotional about everything."
"Can't help it." He wrapped her up in his arms. "You're my baby girl."
Hana blushed and returned the embrace.
"Mr. Kanzashi," Eijiro said, clasping his fist to his chest in an oath, "on my honor as a man, I'll never let anyone hurt your daughter. I'll protect her, no matter what."
"You guys are so dramatic," Hana groaned. "And embarrassing…"
Her father released her so she could give her mom a parting hug as well.
With this, they said their goodbyes, and Eijiro took her suitcase, insisting on dragging both his and hers without any help.
"Sorry…" she said, as they walked together toward the train station. "They're weird. Especially weird lately because they're happy. They haven't been this way since middle school."
"Your parents are cool, Hana," he said, cheerfully. "You're a lot like them."
"I don't know about that…" she said, but she was smiling.
They sat together on the train, catching up on the past week and holding each other's hands. Even though it had only been a week since she'd last seen him, she felt like ages had passed and she was being hit with the high of a reunion with an old friend. It was ridiculous, really, how good it felt. They'd talked on the phone and had video calls pretty much every day this week, so she wasn't sure why being in his presence had such an impact on her.
"Eijiro?" she said. "What are your parents like?"
"Why don't you just wait to meet them and you'll see!" he suggested.
"Because I want to be prepared," she said. "I'm… really nervous…"
"You don't have to be nervous," he said, softly. "They're going to love you."
"Maybe, but… I'm not good at talking to people. Especially new ones."
"Well," he thought about it. "My dad's cool. He's friendly and funny, and really active. We used to go camping together all the time. We hung out at the gym, went on hikes, did a couple of marathons together…"
"Oh right. You're a jock. Sometimes I forget."
"Why do you say it like it's a bad thing?!" he laughed and squeezed her hand tighter. "But yeah, you'll like him. We're a lot alike."
She tried to imagine what a middle-aged version of Eijiro would look like, but her mind drew a blank. "What about your mom?" she asked.
"She's cool too," he shrugged. "She's a lot older than my dad. Like… ten years I think?"
"W-whoa…" Hana blinked. "That's a pretty big age gap."
"Yeah, he was just out of high school when they met," he laughed. "Guess I know where I got my taste for older women." He said this with a suggestive wink in her direction.
"When you say that it just makes it sound like you have a kink for cougars," she said in deadpan.
He laughed and shook his head. "I meant you, Hana."
"I know what you meant, dum—oh, never mind. What's your mom like?"
"She's pretty quiet and serious," he said, "but also really caring and generous. And they both love Japan! They travel around to the festivals all over the country throughout the year! And they bring me back tons of souvenirs."
"So, that explains why your dorm room has all the Japanese posters and souvenirs," she said, with a giggle.
"You mean my mancave?" he said, seriously.
"Oh right, of course. My apologies, Mr. Man."
They laughed and continued to chat about his family and childhood memories until Hana started to get sleepy. The lull of the train and the green scenery drifting by eventually made her close her eyes and lean on his shoulder.
"You can sleep, Hana," he said, gently. "I'll wake you up when we get there."
"Mm," she said, having already decided on sleep without his permission. She had the thought that she wished they were laying down together somewhere, snuggled close together with the sun on them. She almost told him this, but… it was too silly. Too embarrassing to say out loud. So, instead, she nestled against his arm and fell asleep.
Eijiro's parents owned a small cabin by a river, a few hours north of U.A. Most people thought of the beach and festivals when they thought of summer vacation, but according to Eijiro, his parents hated the crowds when the kids were out of school and preferred the forest and rural festivals during that time. The train dropped them off in the nearby town, where Eijiro's dad was there to pick them up.
The man was tall and slim, with long black hair and Eijiro's ear-to-ear grin. Hana's first and immediate thought upon seeing him was that he was incredibly attractive, followed immediately by the thought that Eijiro should just let his natural hair-color shine, followed immediately by the realization that these thoughts were highly inappropriate. She looked down at her braid and saw that her hair was turning pink. She just hoped Eijiro would chock it up to nervousness about this meeting and not to her appreciation of his dad.
"Well, if it isn't the girl Eijiro won't shut up about!" The man beamed at her. She noted that his teeth weren't pointy like Eijiro's, so maybe the quirk actually came from his mother?
"I-It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Kirishima." She bowed her head.
"Good to meet you too," he grinned. "Now, don't be so stiff, you'll hurt your neck. Eijiro, give me those suitcases! I'll load them into the trunk while you open the door for the pretty lady, like a proper man."
"Yes, sir!"
Eijiro held the car door open for Hana as his dad easily hoisted both suitcases in his arms.
"Well, I can tell she's a woman," the man commented with a boisterous laugh. "This weighs almost as much as my entire bench press!"
Hana blushed.
"You can ignore him if you want. He thinks he's hilarious."
"What?" His dad closed the trunk. "I'm not hilarious, I'm Saichiro. Nice to meet you."
Oh, he's the dad-joke type.
Hana giggled quietly as she climbed into the car. Eijiro joined her in the back seat, and a minute later, they were off—driving through the countryside on the way to their destination.
"So, Kanzashi," his dad said as they drove. "I hear you're the one we should thank for Eijiro's good grades. You know, when I saw his last report card, I hung it up on the refrigerator for the first time since he was in second grade!"
"I-I didn't do much," Hana said, bashfully. "He's smarter than he looks."
"Ah man, you're both gonna start ganging up on me now?" Eijiro pouted while his dad let out a booming laugh.
"I like this girl, Eijiro," his dad chuckled. "Good pick."
"I know, right," Eijiro beamed in response.
"I'm not a choice fruit, you know," she mumbled.
"Really?" his dad said. "You seem like a peach to me."
The rest of the drive was filled with banter of similar caliber. Hana felt herself relaxing as they drove into the forest and along the riverside. A trill of pleasure went through her when she felt Eijiro's fingers glide softly over the back of her hand. She looked over and caught his gaze. The excitement and bliss in his eyes. He was so happy.
"We're almost there, kiddos," his dad announced. "So, now to address the elephant in the room and no, I don't mean Eijiro, even if he is as big and slow as an elephant."
"You're one to talk, old man!" his son laughed back.
"Yeah, yeah." He drove around a bend and down toward a gorgeous cabin, tucked up against the river. "Anyway, the question is… are you sharing a room or sleeping separately?"
The teens went rigid, immediately pulling away from each other.
"I just need to know so we can get the rooms ready," his dad continued.
"No!" Hana and Eijiro both said at once.
"Dad, no, Hana deserves her own space, so please…"
"Alright, alright," he shrugged. "Just thought you should have the option since Kanzashi's an adult and you're well on your way to being one, son."
"Thank you for the thoughtfulness, sir, but that's not necessary," she added quickly. "It's not like that between us."
"So be it!" He parked the car. "Then we'll set it up so that Kanzashi has the room with the window facing the river! You'll love it." He looked over his shoulder at her and winked. "It's a nice window."
Hana glanced over at Eijiro, relieved that they dodged a bullet there, but he wasn't looking at her. The hand which had just been delicately touching hers was now in a ball on his lap, and he was staring out the window. "Eijiro…" she started quietly, but at the same time, his dad opened the door.
"Come on, Eijiro, I need your help out here. Kanzashi, you can go on inside. Watch out for the steps though! They're always up to no good."
Eijiro got out of the car before she had the chance to talk to him. Was it just her imagination, or did he seem off after his dad's question about the room situation? She decided she didn't have time to worry about it now, as she got out and started toward the main sliding doors of the cabin.
Already she could smell food wafting from inside. The delicious scents made her stomach growl. The two of them hadn't eaten all day, since before their trip began.
She slid the door open and politely waited in the entrance. The cabin was open and airy, with sliding glass across from her that led out to a wooden patio overlooking the river. The style was very traditional Japanese, reminding her somewhat of a tea-house with additional rooms added onto it. She remembered what Eijiro told her about his parents loving Japanese tradition, so it made sense.
"Pardon me," she called out, trying not to be too loud. "I don't mean to intrude. Mr. Kirishima told me to come inside. If you'd like, I can help with the cooking." She wanted to make a good first impression on his mother most of all.
She heard footsteps on the tatami mats, and then a woman stepped into her line of vision. She was older like Eijiro had mentioned. Maybe around fifty, if Hana had to guess. Her white-streaked hair was braided and then wound into an elegant bun, and she wore a flowery, green kimono. The sight made Hana immediately feel underdressed. She'd had no idea Eijiro's mom would be this formal.
Remembering her manners, she bowed respectfully. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Kirishima. My name is Kinuhana Kanzashi."
"The pleasure is mine, Kanzashi," an elegant voice responded. "Please, feel free to come inside. Help with dinner would be much appreciated."
Hana quickly took off her shoes and slipped into the house-slippers before trailing after the woman into the kitchen. She waited while his mom quickly and succinctly told her what needed to be done to finish the meal. Hana could tell that she was expected to obey immediately and efficiently. There was no small-talk, no introductions beyond the formal moment at the door.
I have to spend a week like this? But this woman is so intense…
They finished cooking and Hana set the table. She wiped the sweat from her brow and then offered to clean up while they waited for the men to come back inside.
His mom sat down at the table, her back straight and expression composed. Hana washed dishes with her heart hammering in her chest, arms feeling like jelly from the nerves.
"Young Kanzashi," the woman said, after a moment.
"Yes, Mrs. Kirishima?"
"What are your intentions with my son?"
The question hung in the air, freezing time and lowering the temperature at least five degrees simply because of the way it sounded coming from behind her thin lips.
"Excuse me?" Hana asked, not sure how to answer.
"I asked you a question," she said, sharply.
Hana swallowed hard. "W-Well, I… Mrs. Kirishima, your son is… I mean, I…"
"Do you not know how to speak?" his mom asked.
"I do, I just…" Hana swallowed hard. She just wasn't good at communicating. How could she tell a complete stranger what she wanted out of a relationship with her boyfriend when she couldn't even tell her boyfriend what she wanted? "I…I'm sorry."
"Hm." His mom sighed. "You're young and don't know what you want, and that is dangerous. Eijiro's quirk may make him seem invincible, but he has a delicate heart. You could very well be the one thing that's capable of breaking him."
I would never do that! She thought. I love him. I'm not playing some game, I want to spend time with him, I want to keep spending time with him for as long as possible!
But the words wouldn't come. She could only stand there in painful silence while the icy woman stared at her. She had half the mind to call her dad to come pick her up before this got any worse, but then…
The front doors slid open and the men came inside with the suitcases.
"Sorry 'bout that ladies!" Mr. Kirishima said. "I needed Eijiro's help patching a hole in the tire!"
"Whoa, it smells so good in here!" Eijiro said. He kicked his shoes off. "Mom!"
"Me first!" His dad gave him a rough shove before darting toward the woman.
Hana couldn't imagine this going well for either of them with the mood Eijiro's mom was in, but she knew better than to interfere.
"You're such a cheater, Dad!" Eijiro slid across the mats and shouldered his way past him.
They both managed to reach the sitting woman at the same time. Hana expected her to breathe fire or snap both of their necks or something, but instead… her face lit up as if the sun's glow suddenly touched it. Her lips parted in a massive, pointy-toothed smile, and she grabbed the boys each by their heads and yanked them into a harsh embrace, made even tighter when she activated her quirk and locked them there. "My handsome men," she laughed, rustling both of their hair.
Hana was astounded. She watched the three of them, laughing boisterously and falling over on the floor, sharing those huge smiles that seemed to be the Kirishima trademark. It was… beautiful and strange and… it made Hana feel small and insignificant.
What are my intentions with your son? she thought. That, Mrs. Kirishima. I want what you have.
Saichiro and Yasuna Kirishima~
Can we talk about how Hana is sabotaging her own relationship? Remember, friends, communication matters!
