3AM Mighty Taco Run

XxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxX

"FUCK!" Katsuki slammed his hands against the steering wheel. He shook the wheel once as he let out his frustration.

The hot air inside the car blasting on high while low murmurs of Christmas jingles played on the radio. The windshield wipers swishing back and forth to clear the drizzle as the car windows frosted from the late-night chill.

"Fuck!" Katsuki gripped the wheel as he leaned forward and rested his forehead on his icy hands.

"I'm sorry" a quiet voice next to him whispered.

The tension was so thick in his car that it drowned out the good mood they were in just seconds ago. They needed to come to terms with this new revelation.

Ochako hugged their large warm brown paper bag of aromatic food sitting on her lap as she tried hiding the annoying glowing mark on her wrist with the sleeve of her sweater.

Katsuki muffled his own glowing wrist by pulling on his turtleneck's sleeve. He then rested his head on top of his hands again as he sat there in silence for a few seconds longer.

"I'm sorry I'm not your... first choice" she says again, lips quivering both from how chapped they were and the emotions getting ready to break free like a dam.

The small cup of birthday flan smothered in Christmas sprinkles on a heap of whipped frosting with an unlit 'O' and 'U' shaped candles left forgotten on top of the dashboard.

He got it for her as a joke, telling her that's all she's getting from him for her birthday. She playfully pouted, telling him that at least he remembered compared to previous years.

What started off as a late night run to get tacos at their favorite place quickly turned into a disastrous night.

They were friends but they honestly never spent enough alone time together. Always being surrounded by their group and hanging out in her college dorm which she shared.

Katsuki was the only one from their group that lived off campus in his own apartment but like hell he'd ever let anyone trash his place.

Both of them drew the short end of the stick when their group of friends picked who'd make the taco run, causing them to set out into the rainy night to get food for everyone. They were having as they'd like to call it, an 'extended' Christmas party because of Ochako's birthday being so close after the date.

The festivities started Christmas Day and ended any time after they'd cut Ochako a cake and watch her open their presents on her birthday.

Katsuki pulled himself together and turned to face her. "What'd ya say, 'Cheeks?"

Cheeks, he called her Cheeks. This was good, he wasn't as angry as she thought he'd be. Maybe disappointed but that was better than him distancing himself from her.

"I'm sorry?" she replies, more as a question than a solid reply. She wasn't exactly sure what to say in this situation.

Everyone was born with either a sun or crescent moon tattoo on their wrist that shimmered with a person's aura but when they meet their soulmate - the tattoo glows bright enough to blind.

It's then that the couple needs to consummate their union so that their sun and moons can reunite, mix their auras together, and avoid becoming devoid of all emotion.

For most, it was a beautiful thing but it could also be terrifying to deny the bond. While rare, there was such thing as living without ever encountering a person's soulmate. And there had also been even rarer cases where a soulmate changes if a person is with someone long enough.

Most people found their soulmate early in life but Ochako and Katsuki feared they'd never bump into their destined one as the years went by, so they did the most plausible thing they could think of – they dated longtime friends and settled.

Ochako's pink crescent moon.

Katsuki's orange sun.

If they never activated their sun and moons then they'd never have to deal with losing what makes them, them. And if they could force their fates to change – then was there really any harm in that?

"I know... I'm not your first choice but if we just..." her face grows hot as the impending blush hits her, her blood boiling as the heater fans her scorching face. "If we just do it... and get it over with, we can... we can just go on as nothing's happened!" Ochako stumbles on her words as she covers her face with her long-sleeved sweater.

She wanted to unlock the car door and run out into the rainy night so that he'd forget her suggestion. She definitely doesn't want to lose her emotions and knew he wasn't interested in her in that way. She didn't blame him at all.

She wasn't tall, blonde, and gorgeous.

She was short, pudgy, and a klutz.

"What?" Katsuki blinks back, not having fully understood what she was saying at first. He had been lost in his own thoughts that he didn't really hear her. "Do you seriously think I wouldn't be interested in you?" he asks her as he studies her watery eyes.

She didn't need to answer when her expression said it all.

"Shit..." he exhales, letting out a sigh, "it's not that I don't find you attractive 'Cheeks... I just..." he grips the steering wheel again as he straightens himself in his seat. "I was just thinking about what Deku would think. He'd kick my ass and..." he mumbles the last part, "you two are together"

Ochako watched his features, he was shivering despite the heater as he faced away from her with the smallest hint of a blush.

Katsuki and Izuku have been best friends since their childhood but Ochako knew that Katsuki would never cross that line with her if he knew she and Izuku were still together. He wouldn't hurt his friend like that.

"We're... not" she confesses right as he whips his head so fast in her direction to hear her out. "Izu and I were only together out of convenience. Yeah, he's my roommate but..." Ochako looks down towards her hidden glowing wrist, "he and Sho realized they're soulmates about... six months ago" she winces at her secret being out.

Ochako and Izuku became the best of friends in high school and were practically glued to the hip with their closeness but when neither of them showed signs of having a soulmate link by their third year – they just figured it'd be easier to be seen together in their college years.

No one would question whether or not their sun and moon formed a union. Moving in together, sharing a dorm as they went about their own lives independently.

Shouto, their high school friend had finished third year abroad when his family moved and having just recently moved back. Izuku spent more time with him than Ochako with Izuku describing it as two magnets being pulled together naturally. He couldn't really explain it in words but early on, Ochako knew it was something more.

When both her friends confessed their tattoos glowed together and that they had made their union permanent - Izuku had worried endlessly on Ochako's reaction but instead she excitedly screamed, hugged them, and kissed them both on their cheeks.

"What?" Katsuki says like a dumbass, completely dumbfounded by what she was saying.

"Izu and I... we... we've never been intimate. Our relationship wasn't like that, we're just friends. Sho moved into our dorm about a week after they started dating" Ochako rubs her wrist, noticing how sensitive it's become now that she's near her... soulmate.

"I'm really sorry, Katsuki... I know you really wanted Camie to be yours" she doesn't know why she's apologizing so much but she felt compelled to.

What was supposed to be a quick taco run, turned into a complicated mess as they sat there at the Mighty Taco parking lot in the freezing drizzling rain as the Christmas lights from the building in front of them reflected off their shadowy figures. At 3am.

Now it was Katsuki's turn to confess something. "Camie and I split two years ago, and before you freak – it's okay, really"

Katsuki had never told anyone that secret. Not Izuku or Eijirou or even his parents. He knew his mom would flip her shit and be devastated. He wasn't ready to break her heart like that. And knew none of his friends would question his off-handed comments on his long-since ended relationship whenever they'd ask him about Camie with the way he kept his private life, well, private.

Camie, his high school friend from a neighboring school was someone he wouldn't have minded being together with for the long haul. They tried to make it work and possibly have their soulmates switch on them but nothing they did ever worked.

And eventually Camie found the one for her and Katsuki let her go because he isn't an asshole. He saw the way she lit up in a way that he could never when she talked about her soulmate. Katsuki was honestly happy for her and wished her all the best in life.

They hadn't really kept in touch since the breakup but he had recently been invited to the baby shower.

Ochako sat there in silence, listening to him speak. The inflection in his tone told her that he wasn't really okay but she wasn't going to push him to talk about it.

"So we're both single, huh?" she tries to say with a light chuckle but instead she frowned.

What luck they both had, being with good friends who would literally sail the cosmos with them for eternity if they never found the one meant just for them. And then their special person found their soulmate, leaving them to fend for themselves alone.

It was fine, really, but what wasn't was the fact that both Ochako and Katsuki had known each other for years and never knew they were meant to be more.

"I don't wanna fuck you just because we gotta calm this shit" Katsuki speaks up, placing a hand over his raised glowing wrist to shield the intense orange light. "I wanna fuck you because we both feel it, not outta obligation" his intense red eyes pierced her own chocolate orbs, "and I sure as hell don't wanna cheapen the experience by... one night"

Ochako slowly nodded as a shiver ran down her spine. She glanced down towards her covered pink glowing wrist before looking back up at him. "You really wanna date me? Try to make this work? Make sure destiny didn't just play a cruel joke on us?"

Katsuki chuckled at that, "you really think destiny would be a bitch like that? You tryna say you can't handle me, 'Cheeks?" he smirked at her.

Ochako playfully scoffed as she placed the bag of food on the dash. "You're not that special, Katsuki"

Katsuki pulled the driver's seat further back and adjusted the seat, wordlessly signaling her to come sit on his lap.

"Yeah well you're no Angel either" he sarcastically rolled his eyes at her as she climbed over the middle panel to straddle him.

"You're freezing!" Ochako yelped as soon as Katsuki's hands circled her waist. The car heater barely helped defrost their chilled bones.

"Then help warm me up, 'Cheeks" he tells her as she internally teetered between covering her burning face in the nook of his neck or shutting him up by kissing him.

She went with the latter as she crushed her chapped lips against his soft ones. Consuming his lowly groans as her tongue played with the seam of his mouth, wanting entry to taste him.

Ochako's hands found purchase in his blonde spikes as she felt her back tapping against the leather-bound steering wheel.

With the fervor of their movements and wrinkling clothes, both their tattoos came exposed - washing the inside of the car in a brief blinding ombré of pink and orange but still not brought together.

"Are you sure?" Katsuki breathlessly asks, not knowing how long he could restrain himself for.

Ochako appreciated him giving her a way out of this. They didn't need to dive head first into this without a safety net. They could take time to really get to know each other even if they already knew almost everything about each other. Their sun and moon just needed to be consummated by the end of the year - there was no real hurry.

She looked into his smoldering, questioning eyes and imagined their future together. In it, she saw a future she's always dreamed of. College, wedding bells, a home filled with laughter, love, and happiness. A lifetime of memories and a growing family.

Her soulmate.
Her orange sun.

"Yes, I'm sure" Ochako confirms, just as breathless but certain, as she leans down to capture his lips once more. Her hands busy themselves by wanting to quickly remove his turtleneck.

Katsuki urgently takes the lead, giving her a hard kiss as he pulls her sweater off. He takes in the sight of her. Breathless, eager, and wanting.

His soulmate.
His pink crescent moon.

"Happy birthday, Ochako"
