Jacob and Embry: Anniversary
Embry was freaking out. He had no idea what to do or what he was doing. Today was his wedding anniversary with Angela, and he was running out of time before his wife returned home. He had planned on cooking a romantic dinner for his beloved, all set with rose petals, lit candles, champagne, the works. He had even set up for Joseph to stay the night with Jacob and Bella. But it was all going wrong and he wasn't sure how to fix it.
Joseph was throwing a tantrum and he couldn't calm him down, the house wasn't clean, he had dropped and broken his original bottle of champagne and had to go get another one, and now he had burnt his and Angela's dinner. He was a good cook, but somehow, he had messed up. Looking at the black mess in the pan on the stove, Embry sighed as he bounced his son in an attempt to calm him down. Glancing at the clock, he saw that he only had two hours before Angela got home. He had enough time to turn his mess around, if only he knew how.
A knock on the door caught his attention and he quickly walked to it, Joseph whimpering against his shoulder. Opening the door, Embry sighed in relief upon seeing Jacob standing at his doorstep. Inviting his friend inside, Embry said, "Thank God you're here, Jake. I am having a hard time right now."
"I can see that," Jacob said slowly as he looked around the normally clean, now messy household. His sensitive nose caught the stench of burnt meat in the air, causing him to ask, "Lamb?"
"It was." Embry sighed and raked a hand through his hair. "I don't know what to do, man. I'm so frazzled about this anniversary, and I don't even know why. And on top of that, I can't seem to get anything to go right, and I want this night to be special for Ang."
Jacob nodded before asking, "How much time do you have left before she gets here?"
"Two hours."
"Alright, I'll help you get ready. First, get Joey to calm down and sleep and I'll start cleaning up. You can join me once you do, and then we'll figure out your dinner situation."
Embry nodded and went to the kitchen to make a bottle of warm milk for his son, gently shushing and soothing him as he did. Jacob set to work in cleaning the house, first starting in the living room which seemed to have the most chaos. Twenty minutes later, Embry joined him after having successfully put Joey to sleep and got in on the cleaning. Forty-five minutes into the cleaning, they had cleaned the living room and dining room, and now they were cleaning up the kitchen. As they threw away what would have been Embry and Angela's dinner, Embry said, "I don't know what I can make in time before Ang gets here."
Jacob grinned and replied, "Which is why I took the liberty of calling some reinforcements."
Following his words, another knock sounded at the door before it opened and Leah and Bella stepped inside, bags of food ingredients in their hands. Shaking her head with a smirk, Leah asked rhetorically, "You just can't plan a special night without help, can you Call?"
Bella set her bags on the counter saying, "Ignore her. Don't worry Embry, we'll have dinner ready before Angela gets here. You can pay us back later."
"In cash," Leah said as she rolled up her sleeves. "This wasn't cheap, you know."
"Can it, Leah," Jacob reprimanded, Leah rolling her eyes at him.
As Leah and Bella began preparing dinner for the Calls—it seemed to be lobster tails, scalloped potatoes, and molten chocolate cake for dessert (Leah working on dinner, and Bella on dessert)—Embry looked at them in amazement before turning to Jacob saying, "You didn't have to do all this, Jake."
Jacob placed a hand on his friend's shoulder and gave it a gentle squeeze. "Don't sweat it, Em. You'd do the same for me, and you and Angela deserve it."
"Yeah but-"
"No 'buts', just enjoy it. Now, why don't you go get ready and I'll finish setting up the romantic scene. I can at least do that much, and we should be out of your hair ten minutes before Angela arrives."
Embry grinned and nodded before leaving for his bedroom, leaving the other three adults to their tasks. When there was fifteen minutes left on the clock, Embry exited his bedroom dressed in nice clothes, hair combed, and wearing a handsome cologne. Walking into the kitchen, he took a whiff of the cooking dinner and said, "That smells delicious, guys."
Bella smiled and said, "Thanks Embry. We hope you guys like it."
Leah, who was finishing up washing dishes, nodded saying, "Yes, thank you. And like I said, we'd like to be paid back in cash for the lobster tails."
"Leah," both Bella and Jacob said exasperatedly, Embry simply chuckling and shaking his head.
Embry looked at the set table with plates of food, romantically lit candles, champagne flutes filled with champagne, and rose petals decorating it. Smiling at the sight, Embry looked back at his friends and said gratefully, "Thank you all so much for this. I don't think my anniversary would have been set up like this without your help."
Bella walked up to Embry and gave him a hug. "It's no problem, Embry. Now you enjoy your anniversary with Angela, and we'll see you guys tomorrow when you come to pick up Joseph."
Leah wished Embry 'goodnight' and 'good luck' before departing, and Bella the same after getting Joseph. Jacob had gathered Joseph's already packed diaper bag and hauled it on his shoulder before saying to Embry, "Well, we're off. And don't worry about Joey, he'll be well taken care of. You enjoy your anniversary, Em."
"Thanks Jake." Embry walked Jacob to the door to see him out, only to remember something important. "Oh, and don't forget, your own anniversary with Bella is in two weeks. I hope you have something planned out, too."
Jacob froze in place for a moment, his eyes slightly wide and a brief flicker of panic flashing through them before he schooled his expression. Plastering a smile on his face he said, "Of course, I do. I've planned the best anniversary for Bells and I."
"Uh-huh. Call me up when you need help."
"Don't you mean 'if'?"
"No, I mean 'when'."
He chuckled when Jacob scowled at him and curtly bid him 'goodnight' before going to join Bella in their car. Embry watched as Jacob buckled up Joseph and put his diaper bag in the car before getting in himself and driving away. Not even two minutes after the Blacks had left, Angela pulled into the driveway. As his wife got out of the car with a smile on her face, Embry grinned at the woman that he loved so much and was happy to call his wife.
Tonight was going to be an anniversary to remember.
