Chapter 15: Blake
Blake shook as he stood by the railing of the world room, gazing at the crystal globe. He currently found himself unable to pull anything up. It wasn't the fact that the orb depicting the Realm of Life wasn't working, but merely the fact that he couldn't muster the energy to do so.
Everything felt cold around him, even though the room maintained a neat perfect temperature at all times. Yet, even the chill afflicting his body didn't register.
He felt lost and numb and empty.
His mother?
Dead.
And it was all because of him. All because he entered the world of magi and mage-craft. The world where magic existed. The world where he was powerful. Now, because of that power, the woman who had taken care of him for most of his life was now dead, and he had never gotten the chance to say goodbye. The chance to tell her that he loved her one last time.
He had failed as her son. He had failed.
What good was all this power if he couldn't save the people he loved. Was everything he had done so far, everything he had been through, all for nothing?
"You shouldn't mourn the weak, my pet," That infuriating voice whispered in his head. "The weak inevitably die."
Blake shook more as his anger began to rise. He couldn't let her voice get the better of him. He couldn't take the blame for everything bad in his life. He had to take responsibility, yes. But this wasn't on him. It was the Observer that did this. A force that could have killed his mother, even if he had been there.
Einsbern's voice sighed. "You've become unbearably resilient since that trial of Judgement. I'll be back soon."
Blake ignored her. He had other things to worry about.
He would make this Observer pay. He didn't care if they were meant to destroy anomalies like him. He would make that damned creature pay.
Blake let out a sigh. He needed to see Rin first. Seeing her always made him feel better. It made him feel calmer and more level-headed.
As he closed his eyes and concentrated on her mana, the crystal world in front of him transported his mind to the states.
That was odd. Rin must have still been there. Why was she still in the states? Probably still searching for clues on him.
The image zoomed through streets and alleys, looking for Rin's mana signature, until it finally ended up at the piers of San Francisco.
Blake's eyebrows knit together. She was with Ben. And the both of them seemed to be hurt. Scorch marks covered their clothes and they had many cuts and bruises about them.
Blake altered his view from Rin and looked up to see a skeletal looking creature with boney wings and a wicked looking spear.
Realization struck through Blake like a lightning bolt. It was an Observer. Possibly the same one that had killed his mother. Rage surged through the diviner as he opened his eyes.
Blake turned heel and began to stride out of the world room with wrathful purpose. There was no time to waste. He had to reach them or they would surely be wiped out.
"And where on earth do you think you're going, Ryan," Integra's powerful voice came from the outside of the door he had just left. She had been waiting for him.
"I'm going to the Realm of Life," Blake said as he stopped and looked over his shoulder.
"Like hell, you are!" Integra hissed. "If you go there, you could be killed by an Observer."
"Then I guess it's a bad thing that I'm going to fight an Observer once I get there." Blake chuckled bitterly.
"You're what?!" Integra shouted with wide angry eyes. "There is no way in hell that I'm letting my apprentice go down to the Realm of Life to fight an Observer! I understand that one killed your mother, but you can't just act rashly. Observers give even Master's of Arcana a hard time, let alone an apprentice."
"It's not just about my mother's death," Blake growled. "If I don't go now, that Observer will kill the woman I love and my best friend. I already lost my mother. I can't lose them too."
"Ryan," Integra's voice softened. "You could die."
"I don't care," Blake retorted. "As long as the people I love are alive, I'll pay any price. Besides, no one remembers who I am, so no one would miss me."
He was just their pawn. They didn't care if he died or not. And if they did, it was only to have one more Diviner among them.
With that, Blake entered into the teleportation room and stepped onto a teleportation circle.
"San Francisco," he called. "Pier 7!"
A white beam shot out from the ground and consumed the diviner. When the light cleared, he was gone.
Integra stood there as Blake's words echoed in her mind.
"Besides, no one remembers who I am, so no one would miss me."
"That's not true, you foolish boy," the older woman whispered to herself as her shoulders slumped. "I would."
——-
Rin and Ben were both breathing heavily. Both magus and occultist were down to their last bit of mana and it was getting hard to stay standing.
The monster in front of them was insane. It looked as if it had barely been fazed by their best efforts. In fact, it looked like it had been barely trying at all.
That had made it all the easier to put cracks in its spear.
Between Blood blasts and Gandr shots, they had slowly, but surely been able to put many small fractures in the monster's spear without it noticing.
It was arrogant at the very least.
"Ok, Ben," Rin sighed. "One last push. We have to live. We need to go for a combined attack. How much blood to do you have left?"
Ben looked into his satchel. "Only about three more."
"That'll have to do," Rin said shakily. "I need you to break all of them and form a Blood Blast, but hold it until I combine it with my gandr, got it?"
Ben nodded and shattered all three of his remaining vials. "Blood art, Formation 5: Blood shot!"
The blood formulated into a sphere of pure blood.
Rin then rose her hands up to face the sphere and red and black gandr energy began to circulate throughout the blood. She'd have to put the rest of her mana into this attack. If she didn't give it her all, there was a chance it wouldn't work. It had to be enough to take the monster out along with its spear.
If this last attack didn't work, they'd be done for.
The monster laughed and began to charge another beam at the tip of its spear.
"It's ready," Rin called over to Ben. "Are you ready for this?"
Ben nodded.
The monster fired its beam.
This had to work. It was now or never.
"Combination Art: Blood Gandr Strike!" Rin and Ben called out as their combined power shot towards the red beam of energy.
The two blasts crashed into each other with incredible force. Neither of the parties gave an inch as the blasts continued to fight for dominance.
"Give it up, Rin Tohsaka and Benjamin Conners," the creature's voice echoed in their heads. "Resistance is futile."
The monster's beam began to push theirs back. It's weight was nearly unbearable, but the two pushed forward. They couldn't lose. Not to this thing. Not ever. They needed to push through.
They threw everything they had left in their reserves into the blast.
"Like...HELL!" The magi yelled as their blast overtook the red beam and engulfed the monster.
Rin and Ben fell to their knees, completely drained of mana. They both looked up at the smoke in the air and smiled.
"Did we win..?" Ben asked in disbelief. "I can't believe it we actually-"
A boney fist emerged from the smoke and slammed into Ben, sending him flying into one of the posts of the pier. The man was knocked unconscious as soon as he connected and fell limp to the floor.
Rin tried desperately to rise to her feet, but her body had no more strength left in it, and even more, her vision was fading from mana overuse.
The smoke cleared to reveal the boney creature, now without its spear.
At least they had managed that much.
Rin's vision was fading. She could feel herself slowly losing consciousness. Was she about to die? She couldn't die here. At least not without figuring out who Blake Ryan truly was to her.
The skeleton swung its fist down on her.
This was it.
Rin Tohsaka lost consciousness before impact.
————
The Observer grinned as it swung down on the girl. Finally, there would be no more anomalies stemming from this "Blake Ryan". It had become quite the annoyance.
Suddenly a bright light slammed down onto the pier and a white and black pentacle blocked the Observer's fist.
The observer stared on in surprise as a man in white hooded ropes stepped out of the light.
"Sorry, bonehead," the man called out. "They're both off limits. You've already taken one important person to me, and that was one too many."
The Observer began to laugh.
He knew exactly who this was, and oh was it a joy to be able to exterminate the source of his annoyance.
"So you're him," it echoed into the man's head. "You're the man they call Blake Ryan."
The hooded man threw his hood back to reveal a mess of brown hair and angry brown eyes.
"In the flesh," Blake smiled darkly.
