The Doctor, Lynda, and Jack barged into Floor 407.

"Rose!" the Doctor shouted.

"Rose, you leave this life with nothing," Anne Droid said.

"Stop this game!" Jack shouted.

"I order you to stop this game!" the Doctor shouted, running across the floor.

"We're live on air!" the floor manager said.

Rose turned and ran toward the Doctor, terrified.

"You are the weakest link," Anne Droid said.

"Look out for the Anne Droid, it's armed!" Rose shouted.

The Doctor's feet lifted off the ground and he flew as fast as he could. The Anne Droid turned its head and its jaw hinged down. The disintegrator beam shot out and hit Rose squarely in the back. She vanished with a scream, right in front of the Doctor. He kept flying without slowing down, zooming toward the Anne Droid, filled with rage. He pulled his fist back and punched it as hard as he could, knocking it down. Jack took off toward the set, raging. The Doctor just stood and stared down at the Anne Droid, holding his wrist in pain. He slowly turned and walked back to the last spot Rose stood. He crouched down to the pile of ashes, all that was left of her.

The elevator doors opened. All the staff turned to look in fear as the Doctor strode out with his huge gun, followed by Jack and Lynda.

"Okay! Move away from the desk!" Jack ordered, "Nobody try anything clever. Everybody clears!"

The Doctor stepped onto the air and stalked straight up to the Controller. The staff crouched in fear as he stepped over their heads.

"Stand to the sides. And stay there," Jack ordered.

The Doctor stood directly in front of the Controller and brandished his weapon. "Who's in charge of this place?" he questioned.

The Controller just continued counting absently.

"This Satellite's more than a game station." He paused, but she just kept counting. "Who killed Rose Tyler?"

"All staff are reminded that solar flares . . ." the Controller said.

"I want an answer!" the Doctor interrupted.

". . . in delta point one," she finished.

"She can't reply," a man said.

The Doctor spun around to face him, swinging the gun at them. They all cringed.

"Don't shoot!" the man shouted.

"Oh, don't be so thick. Like I was ever gonna shoot," the Doctor said. He tossed the gun down to the man and floated down.

"Doctor?" the woman said.

"Whatever it is, you can wait," the Doctor snapped.

"I think she wants you," the woman continued.

The Doctor spun around to look at the Controller at the other end of the floor.

"Doctor . . . ." she said.

The Doctor ran and jumped up to her. He almost fell back down, but pushed himself back up again to look straight at her.

She just stared straight forward with her milky eyes. "Doctor . . . ? Where's

the Doctor?"

"I'm here."

"Can't see. I'm blind. So blind. All my life, blind. All I can see is numbers, but I saw you."

"What do you want?"

"Solar flares hiding me. They can't hear me . . . my- my masters, they always listen but they can't hear me now. The sun . . . the sun is so bright . . . ."

"Who are your masters?"

"They wired my head, their name is forbidden. They control my thoughts, my masters . . . my masters, I had to be careful. They monitor the transmissions but they don't watch the programmes. I could hide you inside the games."

Everyone listened intently.

"My friend died inside your games."

"Doesn't matter."

"Don't you dare tell me that."

"They've been hiding. My masters, hiding in the dark space, watching and shaping the Earth . . . so, so, so many years . . . they've always been there. Guiding humanity, hundreds and hundreds of years . . . ."

"Who are they?"

"They wait. They plan and grow in numbers, they're strong now. So strong, my masters . . . ."

"Who are they?" he asked persistently.

The Controller suddenly looked at him "But they speak of you. My masters, they fear the Doctor."

The Doctor moved forward in anticipation. "Tell me! Who are they?"

The Controller suddenly gasped. The power flickered back on and she went right back to counting mindlessly.

The Doctor turned and looked down at the man. "When's the next solar-flare?"

"Two years time."

"Fat lot of good that is."

Jack ran in from Archive Six. "Found the TARDIS!"

"We're not leaving now," the Doctor said.

"No. But the TARDIS worked it out." Jack shoved a worker out of his chair. "You'll wanna watch this."

The Doctor lowered himself to the ground to watch.
