CHAPTER 8
Walking out of her office, Arizona's phone started to ring from the bottom of her handbag. After fighting around to find, she groaned when she saw that it was her mother calling her.
"Hi mum," Arizona answered, rolling her eyes to herself.
"Hi sweetie! How are you," Barbara said loudly into the phone.
"Mum you don't have to yell at me, you can talk normally. I'll still hear you."
"Arizona don't change the subject or avoid telling me what's going on."
"I'm not," Arizona groaned.
"Well then why did I have to hear about your new girlfriend from Teddy? Would you have ever told us about her?"
"Of course I would have mum, but she's not my girlfriend. She's just a friend, kind of. She's a mother of a student."
"And? Teddy said you liked her, why isn't she your girlfriend yet," Barbara asked, knowing how stubborn her daughter was.
"I'm going to kill Teddy. It's complicated. I don't think she even likes me."
"Why do you think that?"
"Mum," Arizona whined, "just drop it!"
"I will not. I just want you to be happy! From what Teddy has said, this Callie likes you back."
"God, she even told you her name! She was snappy with me a few weeks ago and I haven't really spoken to her or seen her since," Arizona explained. "Why am I even telling you this?"
"Because I'm your mother," Barbara said matter-of-factly. "Stop being so stubborn. You like this woman, ask her out. Don't let anything get in your way, including yourself."
Arizona rolled her eyes again to herself, glad that her mother couldn't see her right now. She knew the Barbara would have given her a clip over the ears. She was right though. Arizona was the only thing currently standing in her way. With a deep breath, she finally accepted that maybe she should ask Calliope out.
"Thanks mum. I think I'll about it. I have to go, I love you."
"Love you too sweetie. Go get your girl."
With that their conversation ended. Arizona knew that the next time she saw Calliope she would ask her out on a date.
Standing in the kitchen, Sofia could see Callie pacing around their living room whispering to herself. She had been doing this for days. Whenever her mother had down time, she spent it pacing, muttering to herself or deep in thought. A couple of days ago Callie had almost flooded the kitchen because she hadn't been paying attention when filling up the sink. Sofia wasn't sure, but she thought this had something to do with one blue-eyed, blonde principal.
"Can I say something without getting in trouble," Sofia asked.
"Depends what it's about," Callie answered, still pacing.
"Arizona," Sofia said hesitantly.
Callie stopped dead and raised her eyebrows at her daughter. She wasn't sure if she wanted to hear what Sofia had to say on the issue but she was definitely curious about what Sofia could possibly have to say.
"You can say it, but I'm not promising I won't get mad," Callie replied, eyeing her daughter off.
"I know I stuffed things up when I did what I did, BUT please don't let that be the reason that you don't take a chance on her."
"What makes you say that," Callie questioned.
"I've seen the way you look at people you thought you were in love with. The way you look at Robbins is something else. Plus, I feel it when you guys are in the same room. I know you feel it too. I promise I will never ever bring it up again after this, but I just wanted to put it out there. Don't be scared Mama. You deserve happiness and I'd hate it if I was the reason you didn't get it."
"You'll never bring it up again?"
"Cross my heart," Sofia smiled, relieved that her mother didn't yell at her.
Callie paused. She wasn't sure how this conversation was supposed to go. They didn't do this. They didn't talk about Callie's relationships. As a parent she wasn't even sure if she should talk about this with Sofia. If they did talk about this, was it going to encourage Sofia to try and push them together again or would talking about it finally put a stop to Sofia's meddling?
"What if she doesn't feel the same and I make a fool of myself?"
Sofia was surprised by her mother's response. She had thought she had pushed too far. She thought for sure that Callie was going to storm out and not talk about her feeling again. Maybe things were different now. Maybe their relationship was growing now that Sofia was getting earlier. Maybe now they would finally be able to be honest with each other.
"What if she does? Which one scares you more?"
"I'm not really sure," Callie admitted.
"I think taking a chance and possibly falling on your face is braver than hiding behind your fear. You could take this chance with Robbins and live happily ever after. Or you could not take a chance and be a lonely spinster with 5 cats."
"When did you get so wise," Callie chuckled.
"I think I get it from Dad," Sofia joked.
"That's not what you got from your father," Callie joked back.
"But seriously Mama. I just want you to be happy and I think she would make you happy. Don't let the past dictate your future."
Sitting in her office, Arizona was thinking about the best way to ask out Callie. She wanted it to be romantic and not awkward, She definitely didn't want to start rambling and put the brunette off. She could be cool. She could be chill and not freak out. It seemed that they had not been able to cross paths at all since their last encounter. When Sofia had made it to tutoring sessions, which hadn't been as often due to exams, Callie had been at work or called into surgeries and unable to pick the girl up from school. This left Arizona no way to have chance run ins with the brunette.
"Hey," a puffed Teddy almost yelled at Arizona from the office door. "Henry's been in an accident at training. Would you be able to swing by after work and pick up Jamie? Apparently it's bad."
"Yeah of course," Arizona confirmed. "How much time do you want off? Wait, tell me after and we'll get you covered for as long as you need."
"Thanks. They said he may be out for the rest of the season but I'll see you when you come to the hospital."
"Go," Arizona nodded to her best friend before she watched her run away.
Sport injuries usually ended up in the ortho department. A certain Latina was the head of the ortho department at one particular hospital. Quickly getting out her phone, Arizona messaged Teddy to find out which hospital Henry had been taken to. It didn't take long for Teddy to text back with the answer she was looking for. Today was the day.
Leaning on the bench at the nurse's station, Callie's mind took her back to the blonde she hadn't seen in weeks. After her talk with Sofia, she had been very close to calling Arizona and asking her out. Every time she got out her phone and looked at the contact, she chickened out and put her phone away. Fear seemed to win out every time. Maybe she'd try again tonight. Maybe even just send a text to start a conversation before she full on asked her out. Out of the corner of her eye, a blur on blonde went past her. It couldn't be?
"Arizona," Callie called out when she saw blonde hair walk past her.
"Calliope, hey," Arizona smiled as she back tracked to talk to the brunette doctor.
"What are you doing here?"
"Oh, my friend Teddy's husband has been admitted so I'm just here to pick up her kid while she waits with him. Actually can you help me find him? Henry Burton?"
"Wait, you know Henry Burton? The famous baseballer, Henry Burton?"
"Mmmhmm," Arizona nodded, smiling at how Callie's face lit up. "I can get tickets if you're a fan? I mean, he might be out for the rest of the season but he can still get me tickets."
"I'd like that," Callie nodded. "He's in room 4231. It's just down that way and to the right."
"Great. Thanks," Arizona smiled as she watched Callie point out the directions. "So I guess I'll call you?"
"Um yeah. I guess you will," Callie nodded.
"Awesome," Arizona agreed as she started to walk away.
"Wait," Callie called out before she got too far. "Just to be clear, you're coming to the game with me?"
"How can we go out on a date if I don't come as well," Arizona winked and smiled and before continuing to Henry's room.
"Why are you so happy," Teddy asked as Arizona entered their room.
"No reason," Arizona sighed, taking the child that was in Teddy's arms, into her own.
"Liar! Come on, tell me," whined Teddy.
Henry chuckled at the antics happening in front of him. Both women were stubborn and would never relent.
Before they could finish their conversation, Callie also entered the room to give them an update on Henry's x-rays. As Callie filled them in on Henry's injury and talked them through his surgical plan, Arizona stared at her dreamily. All she could think about was the fact that she had finally asked the gorgeous woman out on a date and she had said yes. Now all she had to do was plan the perfect date, hopefully with tickets to a baseball game curtesy of her best friend and her husband. Arizona pictured exactly how it would go in her head.
"Okay so I'll schedule your surgery for first thing tomorrow morning," Callie confirmed as she finally let herself look at the dreamy blonde who was holding onto a squirming toddler.
"Sounds great doc," Henry nodded. "How long until I can start rehab?"
"Hmmm?" Callie asked, bringing her attention back to her patient. "Oh. If the surgery goes according to plan we'll have you in physical therapy in about 8 weeks as long as your incision site has healed. Any other questions?"
"No, I think we're good," Teddy added as she looked between the doctor and her best friend.
"Great, I'll see you tomorrow then Henry. An intern will come in and bring you the forms and fill you in on the pre op requirements," Callie added. She threw one last smile at the blonde before leaving the room.
The room was silent after Callie left. Teddy waited for what felt like a year before hounding Arizona.
"You didn't, did you," Teddy finally asked.
"What?" Both Henry and Arizona asked at the same time.
"Did you and the hot doctor finally have S-E-X," Teddy whispered loudly.
"What?! No," Arizona whispered loudly back, looking around to make sure Callie wouldn't hear them. "God, who do you think I am?"
"You are someone who, in the past, has had a lot of s-e-x with women," Teddy countered.
"She's kind of right," Henry agreed from his hospital bed.
"Uh. No! I hate you both," Arizona whispered through her teeth. "We didn't have s-e-x. I just asked her out and she yes."
"YES," Teddy yelled, startling the toddler in Arizona's arms who started to cry. "Finally!"
"Look what' you've done," Arizona pointed out as she started to soothe the toddler. "I kind of promised her tickets to a baseball game."
"Wait, is Dr Torres the hot doctor you've been crushing on for months? I'll get you dug out seats if you're going to finally seal the deal," Henry smiled.
"I hate both of you," Arizona groaned. "Just, get me the tickets please. Now what time does this cutie have to be at daycare tomorrow?"
Callie paced around her room nervously. Tonight, was the night. Her first date with Arizona. They had organised this date over a week ago and Callie had spent the whole time dreaming about how it would go. Now it was here she was more nervous than excited. At least, she thought that's how she felt. What if they didn't have anything to talk about or what if Arizona decided she didn't want another date? What if Callie had just made their chemistry up in her head? All she knew was that they were going to a baseball game. She looked down at her outfit, her sneakers, jeans and V-neck shirt. What is she was too casual? Arizona hadn't said how to dress.
She couldn't even ask Sofia if she looked okay. As soon as Arizona confirmed she had the tickets, she had organised for her daughter to sleepover at Naomi's house. As far as Sofia was concerned, Callie had a marathon surgery that was going to take over 12 hours. Never before had she lied to her daughter to go out on a date. How was Sofia going to take it when she found out?
The sound of the doorbell snapped Callie out of her thoughts. Taking a deep breath, she walked down the stairs and headed straight for the door. Before she could open the door, she heard the bell again. She quickened her steps and finally reached the door, opening it to reveal the blonde who had consumed her thoughts for so long now.
"Hey," Arizona smiled, her eyes tracking down Callie's body before landing back on those gorgeous brown eyes.
"Hey," Callie said back softly.
"You look amazing," Arizona complimented her, smiling so big she was sure it reached her ears.
"Thanks," Callie smiled back. She didn't know what to say. All she wanted to do was look at her date all night. Never before had she felt this happy. "Did you want to come inside?"
"Maybe later," Arizona winked, "we should get going if want to get to our seats before the game finishes."
Sitting in her seat, Arizona knew she should be paying attention to the very close game in front of them. Every time she tried to pry her eyes away from the beautiful brunette beside her, she found herself staring back at her. Callie was captivating. It was the only word her brain could currently come up with. Her thoughts had been consumed with different scenarios with how tonight was going to play out. Arizona could never have imagined it would be going as perfectly as it was. She had been captivated since the moment Callie had opened the door.
"Oh my god, how do you miss that," Callie yelled angrily before looking to Arizona who was smiling at her. "What," Callie asked, smiling.
"Nothing. You're just adorable when you're angry," Arizona answered.
"That's not what anyone else says," Callie chuckled.
"Well they're all wrong."
Callie smiled back at Arizona before grabbing her hand and squeezing it. No one had ever made her feel this way, especially not on the first date. The way Arizona looked at her made her feel like the most beautiful woman in the world. Even though they were surrounded by people, Callie could only see Arizona. The crowd erupted into cheers but Arizona and Callie just ignored the whole ordeal. They were both lost in each other's eye. Arizona leant over and placed a soft kiss on Callie's cheek.
"You're possibly the most beautiful woman I've ever seen," Arizona said softly, entwining them fingers.
All Callie could do was smile at the blonde. They had only been dating for a few hours and she already knew this was going to be different. She definitely wanted another date if the blonde did. She also definitely wanted to kiss the blonde. She wanted to know what those lips tasted like. Her eyes focused on the pink lips and her mind started imagining the kinds of things she wanted them to get up to later.
A loud horn sounded off that finally broke the two out of their moment. The game had ended. The crowd was up and roaring at the winner. Arizona squeezed Callie's hand as they both stood up to leave.
"Did you enjoy the game," Callie asked as they walked back to Arizona's car. They were holding hands and gently swinging their arms between their bodies.
"Uh, if I'm honest I wasn't really paying attention to the game."
"Oh. Why not?"
"There was this really sexy lady that kept distracting me," Arizona winked.
"Where was she sitting," Callie asked, knowing that Arizona meant her.
"A few rows in front of us," Arizona whispered as she leant closer to Callie.
"How about, you drive us back to my place," Callie suggested, their lips almost touching.
"I think I can do that," Arizona agreed, pulling back before they could kiss.
