"I can't believe I'm related to Lyra. Me and Sokka are both related to her. My brother will flip out when he finds out this news. He's obsessed with history in general. How am I related to her? Which side my mother's side or my father's side?" Katara pondered this thought out loud.
"It's your mother's side" Haiko said. "Your mother Kya is the one who carried the bloodline on to you. Now hand over the scale peacefully and I'll show you mercy. If not I'll be forced to take it from you the hard way. Your choice."
Katara smirked at Haiko's threat. "I am not handing you this. If you posses this scale you'll be one step closer to releasing total Armageddon on the world killing us all. Including my brother, my friends and my husband Aang and I'd sooner die than let that happen. You'll have to pry the scale from my corpse!!" Katara was seething with anger. Even if Haiko lost Nova that was no excuse for what he wanted to do. She had to defeat him once and for all and save the world. Katara posed ready to lay the smack down on Haiko.
"I see you're choosing to do this the hard way" Haiko said as he posed and pulled a large amount of water out of the air. "Good I want to fight you in a heated battle. If I defeat you I'll be an S class water bender myself and I'll earn bragging rights that I defeated the strongest of all the waterbenders. That idea excites me. It will more than make up for the disappointment of you being Lyra's descendant and not me."
Katara pulled large amounts of water out of the air. She was grateful to Hama for teaching her how to do it. At least some good came outta Hama's teachings. Suddenly the ground bubbled and oozed under Katara's feet. She reacted quickly and jumped out of the way. The tar retreated back into the ground having missed its intended target. Katara was relieved. She could avoid it. She heard it right before it started soaking the ground and jumped to safety. There was a faint squelching sound right before it bubbled to the surface and she could hear it. She was proud.
"Nice try but I'm not falling for your tar trick again" Katara said confidently as she landed safely in another spot in the temple. "I know if I get caught in that tar it will be all over for me."
Haiko seemed upset that he couldn't use his tar bending on her again. But he was more than happy to give her a show of his water bending skills. He shot hundreds of water pellets from the giant wave he held up in the sky. Katara reacted by using her giant sky wave to create a huge wall of ice blocking all of the water pellets. Haiko rushed forwards taking water out of his pouch on his side. He used the water whip on Katara trying the knock her over so she'd drop the scale. Katara responded by whipping her water whip into his one. Haiko's water whip disintegrated in an instant and never touched Katara. Haiko looked upset. She was soo powerful his attacks weren't connecting. So he had to outsmart her. He shot multiple streams of water at Katara. Katara zigzagged dodging all the streams and landing on the ground safely away from the attack. She was so graceful in her fluid movements. Katara saw out of the corner of her eye tar bubbling out of the ground trying to grab her hands. She didn't have time to counter it with her hands or feet. She used her mouth to freeze the tar with her ice breath. Haiko looked disappointed. His trick didn't work.
Haiko used ice to ride it like a wave. Katara copied him and the two were surfing the air with the ice flow. Haiko and Katara were in a heated battle both shooting ice shards at each other. Their motions were so fluid they easily avoided each other's shards. Haiko wasn't trying to hit Katara with his shards he was trying to distract her and grab the scale. But it wasn't working. He couldn't grab the scale from her. It was just out of reach.
He landed back on the ground frustrated. How the heck was he suppose to get the scale? Katara was just too powerful. He couldn't get it. His face seethed with anger. Suddenly his pocket started to glow and Haiko felt a strange feeling come over him. Like his blackened heart was being read by an unseen entity. He noticed that it was coming from the scale in his pocket. It was reacting to his hatred of Katara. Haiko pulled out the scale. It was pulsating with a brilliant rainbow black light. He felt a strange sensation shoot through his body. It was almost like the scale was alive. And it was feeding off of the darkness inside of him. Haiko wondered what was going on. He clutched the scale and concentrated on its power. Katara looked on at what was happening puzzled by the current strange event.
Then out of nowhere and with no warning black dark energy started to flow out of the glowing scale. It expanded and grew. Haiko couldn't believe what was happening. He knew the scale was part of The Planet Eater's actual body so did that mean some of its power was in the scale itself? Haiko was soon to get his answer. He was about to be very pleased with this turn of events. The scale increased its dark power. The power filled the whole temple chamber.
Katara raised a large ice wall to block the dark energy that was being emitted by the scale. Success. She dissipated most of it. But she couldn't block all of it. A small part of the energy grazed Katara's left arm. Katara screamed in pain lowering the ice wall and grabbing her left arm with her right hand. She had dropped the scale she was protecting. Haiko was overjoyed and walked over to it and picked it up. Now he finally had two of the scales. There was only one more to find. He was closer to his goal. Katara had slumped to her knees. She was in extreme agony. Why did it hurt so much? Her blue eyes were grazed over and were turning a grayish blue instead of the brilliant blue they usually were. The suffering in her eyes could be seen by Haiko. He realized just how powerful the planet eater was. If just getting grazed by a small amount of its power could do this to Katara imagine what it could do to the entire Team Avatar. Haiko bended a stream of water into a ice spear. He was ready to drive it through Katara and kill her. Katara was in pain but she had to react. She threw up her injured arm and shot water at Haiko flinging him backwards breaking his spear. He realized now was the time to go. Katara could still fight even though she was in immense pain. Haiko ran off into the distance with the two scales.
Katara leaned up against the wall of the temple. Her wounded arm was pulsating and the injury was black. It felt like she was poisoned by the wound it hurt soo much. She bended water into her palm and covered the section of her arm that was touched by the energy. She could see that the part of her arm was still black but it was slowly responding to her healing abilities and it started to turn grey. She was lucky. She could heal this dark power. But she still had some of the injury. She couldn't heal all of it. Her arm was still grey in the injured spot but a lot of the wound had healed. And none of it was black anymore. Katara felt a lot better and she was able to stand up now and walk. She had to get back to Republic City with the horrible news she had discovered about the scales.
