Happy
Is this what it feels like to be happy?
Spencer eased quietly into the small room with its walls painted the color of sunshine. His eyes found the little bundle sleeping peacefully. He smelled the scent of milky baby and grinned so hard his mouth ached.
Spencer wanted to pick up his tiny son but knew he'd disturb the three-month-old if he touched him. So, he carefully approached the crib and looked down at the newest member of the Reid family. Jason Derek Reid, or JD, was a carbon copy of his mother except for his mouth. He wore a blue and gold onesie that Garcia had made for him with the words, "Future Genius FBI Agent," on the front.
His son slept with his eyes crinkled, which gave him the appearance of laughter. Spencer leaned forward and whispered. "I know many experts debate whether babies can dream or not, but I hope you can, Jason. I want you to have happy dreams."
Jason twitched in his sleep, and his little mouth made sucking motions that tugged at Spencer's heart. The memory of the first time he'd observed Max feeding Jason had stirred up emotions he'd never felt. The swirl of protective, loving, and awed sensations had brought tears to his eyes.
"Hey," said a soft voice behind him. Arms encircled his waist and gently squeezed him.
"Hi."
"I woke up, and you were gone, then I heard you through the monitor."
"Oh."
Max pulled him around to make eye contact. "Don't feel bad about spending time with your son. I know how much you love him."
"Only slightly less than I love you," Spencer pinched two fingers together, then smirked. "I'm kidding. I love both of you so much I can't distinguish between my feelings sometimes. Does that make sense?"
"Yes. I feel that way when I'm with both of you. I know there is a difference between the love of a parent and the love of a spouse. One thing I do know is that I'd do anything for both of you. No one better mess with either of you, or they'll answer to me."
Spencer chuckled under his breath, "I understand and feel the same."
"Think you're ready to come back to bed."
"Yeah."
Spencer looked down at Jason and carefully adjusted his blanket. "Sleep well, Jason Derek."
As they left the nursery, Max said. "Thank you for making me so happy."
"You're a mind reader," Spencer said as they slowly traversed the hall to their bedroom. "I was thinking the same thing about you."
