The next day I couldn't focus on school. Janis and Damian told me they were just going to hang out at her house and watch a scary movie. They said I could join them if I wanted. Most of the teachers didn't really do anything special. But Ms. Norbury, who only had a black cat shirt on in the morning, was dressed in a total witch costume by the time 8th period came around. She had a spiky black hat with a mesh web design covering it and her cat shirt was covered by a large cloak that went all the way down to her feet.
"I love your costume!"
"Thank you, I worked hard on it!" She seemed really excited that I liked it.
"Well it paid off." I sat down on my seat.
Aaron turned towards me, "do you have a costume for tonight?"
"Yeah, I think you're going to like it."
"Really, because-"
Suddenly the lights started flickering and fog filled the room. Pumpkins around the room lit up through the room all over the walls. The lights turned completely off and there was only a faint orange glow coming from each pumpkin.
"Students!" Ms. Norbury's voice shouted from the darkness, "take the paper and flashlight from underneath your desks and try to solve all the problems. The lights will only be turned on if everyone finishes the problems, so make sure everyone helps each other out."
God, she was so creative. This was such a good idea. I grabbed my flashlight and pencil and moved towards the nearest glowing pumpkin. It had a simple equation about cross-multiplication that I solved relatively quickly. I could hear hushed whispers from everywhere around me. I did all the problems I could find and went up to the front of the room, handing it to Ms. Norbury to check. She scanned over it and put it aside.
"I hoped you'd be the first to finish." she whispered to me.
I could only barely see her brown eyes through her witchy outfit, but in the dim orange and yellow glow of the room they looked quite glamorous. I stared into them for a moment too long then walked back over to my desk, hoping Aaron didn't notice that I had finished so early. I felt her eyes on me until another student came up to get their paper checked. I found some people that were struggling, making sure Aaron was around, and helped them out. Our class finished fifteen minutes before school ended. When the lights turned back on we found a twix on each of our desks.
I made sure to pack up my stuff slowly and was alone in the room with her after a little bit.
"Cady, wait, I have something for you." She dug through the bag she placed on the floor and pulled out a large bag of Twix and gave it to me, "you do like Twix, right?"
"They're my favorite!"
"I guessed right then."
"Thank you so much for these."
"I just had a bunch leftover."
"Still, thank you for giving it to me."
"Of course."
We shared a smile.
"Have a happy Halloween!"
"You too."
I walked out to the bus a little behind everyone else. My bag was quite a bit heavier now though. She was so thoughtful. I'm pretty sure these will be gone by next week. To be honest, I haven't really tried a lot of candy. My mom brought home a twix bar one year when I was eight on Halloween and I just fell in love. Someone once told me Reese's were good, so I might try that someday too.
