Chapter 10 The Road Home
Wade had to leave so Lemon could have the weekend off. She deserved it. She had taken care of the Rammer Jammer for a solid week. She had given him the time he needed to follow his dream, Zoe Hart. Zoe and Lemon were not o great terms but she came and supported him in hopes that things would turn out for him.'
He hoped that Zoe and Lemon could become good friends because he has found that she will do anything for her friends. Not marrying George has been a good thing for Lemon.
HIs alarm went off at 10:30.
Zoe had to be at work at 1pm and he had to be at the airport so he unraveled himself against her at around 11am. . She didn't have time for breakfast/lunch because she wanted to spend every minute she could with her boyfriend. Wade jumped up and made her some coffee. SHe quickly was dressed in her blue scrubs and her hair in a ponytail.
He wrapped her up in his arms and didn't have words to say what he was feeling. Breaking the silence, Zoe, said, "you know girls are going to be all over you now at the RJ, well even more."
"Doc, I am a one woman man!"
I know you are! I will give my notice today."
They playfully kissed. Wade was exhausted. For the last week, he had been learning set lists, traveling by bus, worrying about how to get Zoe to admit her feelings and to commit to him. He had virtually no sleep.
Everything had been intense. The tour week was intense. Their "celebration" was intense and their two huge conversations were intense. Wade was not an intense guy. He was playful, light hearted, funny. Even during their big conversations the past couple of days, he has always tried to lighten the mood whenever he could. Zoe loved that about him. She once thought they had nothing to talk about and what she realizes now, is he is the only one she can tell everything.
They both realized they were deep in their own thoughts. Wade wanted to know what she was thinking.
"Don't tell anyone I am moving home and we can surprise them in a couple of weeks"
Wade questioned her, " I can tell them that we are back together though ,right? If this is a real relationship, we shouldn't want to hide it."
"I am never hiding my feelings about you again. That got us in trouble last time."
" Baby, I have to get to the airport. I wish you could come with me now."
" I have 2 weeks left on my summer contract. I will give them an official 2 weeks notice as well."
"OK" interrupted Wade.
" Don't worry Wade, nothing is going to keep me from coming home, coming home to you. I am so happy that I followed my gut instinct and came here for the summer. My heart knew I was in love with you but I needed my head to get on the same page. New York made me realize that I had no romantic feelings for George. New York made me realize the friends I have in Bluebell are true friends. New York made me realize that it was you I needed and wanted. It was the time away from Bluebell that helped us just deal with each other and not distractions. I would think to myself all the time, How good you were about Checking in on me, saying what you needed to say instead of bottling things up, and proving to me that you were willing to wait for me. I learned that you always knew what I needed, you always listened to things I didn't think you needed to , like my work schedule. You didn't smother me but gave me just the right amount of attention for me to be able to find my way back to you. I will never regret leaving and I will never regret coming back home to you."
Wade picked her up and she put her legs around his waist. This kiss was a little deeper than the ones earlier. He knew he had to let her get her feelings out too. She had done many things that helped in the demise of their relationship but he was the one that made the huge mistake. He knew going forward that they had to be able to communicate if this was going to last.
"I love you, Zoe Hart and that is one thing that will not change. In hindsight, I am glad you came to New York too, the distance was exactly what we needed and I am proud of you for being confident enough to know that. It was a long hard summer for me without you. Knowing there was a possibility that I would never kiss you again, never tuck your hair behind your ear, or wake up against you but it was worth the worry and the work."
They stood on the sidewalk catching separate cabs. The first one was for Zoe. Wade opened her door and whispered, Doc, I will call ya when I land. Remember I have to work tonight. Thanks for loving me, flaws and all. Now go be the amazin' doc you are."
" I love you too Wade, take a nap on your flight home. I will see ya in a couple of weeks."
