It was Amity's last day at the coven and she was ready to go back home. Her abomination carried the cauldron it had come out of and she carried her bag with clothes towards the dragon boat. Her face was stoic and her movements rigid.
"Thank you Kikimora, we hope Amity didn't cause you any trouble. We will make sure she continues improving at home." Odalia's voice was courteous towards the new face of the coven. Kiki nodded and said nothing before walking back towards the tower. As soon as she was out of sight, Odalia looked down at Amity.
"You ready to go back home? There's much to be done." She said as she took Amity's bag from her and put it in the boat. Amity silently nodded, looking straight ahead of her. She was ready.
Once at home, she walked directly to her room. When her father said hello and invited her to eat, she declined with a few words. Her mother offered to take her to the library later to check out coven books and even an Azura book as a reward for her hard work. Amity declined again. She wanted to be alone. Her parents looked concerned. They hadn't seen Amity in such a state since they had forced Willow out of her life but they hadn't done anything of the sort this time. They were being good parents! How was their little girl supposed to get in the coven if she was depressed? The twins were called to check up on her.
"Heyy mittens, back so soon?" Emira asked from the door.
"Yeah, what's up? Are you gonna show us some of your new spells you've been writing about?" Edric added.
Amity winced. Luz had probably shown them the letters she had sent her so they knew about the spells and lovey-dovey stuff she had sent. As if reading her mind, Emira spoke again.
"Come on, were you just planning on showing your girlfriend all the things you learned? We wanna see too!"
Amity ignored her sister and began unpacking her clothes. Each movement keeping her from melting away in the despair she was desperately trying to contain. The twins watched her in silence, both unsure of what to say.
"Mittens, we love you just as much as Luz does. You don't have to wait for her to come over to talk, you can tell us if there's something wrong." Edric was trying to be supportive and reassure her of their love but was surprised when he saw Amity tense up and stand still for a few seconds. They loved her just as much as Luz did? Amity couldn't take it anymore and let the weight of her thoughts take her down. As she sat on the floor, tears rolling down her face like overflowing streams, the twins quickly closed the door and rushed towards her. They were silent as they hugged her, giving her the space she might need to talk. Between sobs and hiccups, Amity told them everything about letters and the tower, the loneliness, the water abomination and her failures. The twins looked at each other, worry and confusion shining through their golden eyes.
"That doesn't sound like Luz." Emira insisted.
"It doesn't matter if it sounds like her or not! She's right either way. I don't know what true love is, I don't deserve it. I don't have time for it! I should just focus in school and becoming a powerful witch. Azura didn't need a girlfriend so neither do I! As a Blight, I can't be preoccupied with such things."
Her words were spiraling out of her, trying so hard to convince her that they were honest and true. The ache in her heart reminded her they weren't but she tried to suppress that. If she said it enough times, her heart would believe them too.
"Amity, you sound just like mother and father" Edric said, his eyes looking down at the floor. Hearing his little sister talk that way was strange yet familiar. Emira's eyes were cloudy, a memory returning from a deep vault in her mind.
"Mittens, don't let things end like this. You love Luz, don't you?" she asked gently. Amity swallowed her true feelings and said a firm 'No'. Emira felt the tears forming in her eyes but didn't allow them to fall. She needed to be strong for her sister.
"Amity, do you know a girl named Viney?" she asked without looking up at Amity.
"Um, yes I think so. She was allowed to be in two tracks at Hexside after she helped take down the fake Inspector. Why do you bring her up?" Edric looked at Emira and held her hand for support. Emira smiled and told Amity about her secret relationship with Viney.
They had met a few years back when Emira noticed the covenless witch hiding through a secret door at one of her lectures. After this, she began noticing her in other classes and finally followed her through one of the doors one day. She had met the detention group that day and been adopted by them for some mischief and fun. It didn't take long for Emira to start falling for Viney and it looked like the feeling was mutual. They'd spend lunch together, do homework at the library and just try to see each other as much as they could. When her parents found out Emira was dating a 'low-level' witch, they demanded she either kept it a secret or end the relationship. If she didn't, they would take the necessary steps to make sure Emira understood. Not wanting to end things with Viney, she explained to her that they needed to keep their relationship secret for the time being. The more she explained the situation to Viney, the angrier she seemed to get. Once Emira finished talking, Viney was almost fuming.
"You think I'm not good enough to date in public?!" she had yelled at Emira. She denied this of course, Viney was more than enough! However, Viney wasn't listening. She didn't want to hear excuses. "If you and your family are too ashamed to have me in your life, then I clearly don't belong in it. Let's make things easier for you, just leave me alone!"
That had been the last time Emira had ever talked to Viney. She still saw her in class once in a while but never tried to talk to her again. She had hurt her, even if Viney acted like nothing had happened.
"Why are you telling me this?" Amity asked, her eyes set on Emira.
"Amity, I loved Viney. I loved her and I chose our family reputation over her. I let the whole 'Blight mentality' bullshit get to me! Its too late for me to change things with Viney, it would be unfair to her. She's obviously much better now, living a happy life without me in it. I don't want you to do that too. Blights aren't BORN undeserving of love. We MAKE ourselves that way. We cut people off, we pretend to be emotionless, we try to be what we're told we need to be. Amity, we'll support you no matter what, but please make sure you're doing what your heart is telling you to do. We don't want you to fall down that hole if you don't have to" Emira was holding on to Amity's hands now as Edric held her shoulders. Amity let her lips quiver before breaking down again. She held Luz's final letter in her hand and read it one last time before noticing the signature and crumbling it up. She knew someone else had written the letter, but her own insecurities had made her blind to what was so obvious. She had to talk to Luz.
