A/N - Trigger warning for homophobic slurs.
It was a Thursday morning again and Remus was taking the third-year class, covering kappas. He could sense that there was some tension between the Gryffindors and Slytherins due to their upcoming quidditch match but decided to just keep an eye on it. He was explaining to students that you can weaken a kappa by making it bow therefore tipping some water out of its head. Suddenly Remus heard "You're such a faggot Potter" Remus turned around "No one uses that sort of language in this school Malfoy. 10 points from Slytherin and detention," he said sternly.
"But everyone knows it's true. Weasley likes Potter's dick up his ass" teased Malfoy.
"Malfoy, get out!" shouted Remus "If all you can do it spew out homophobic bile you're not welcome in this classroom. And another 20 points from Slytherin." The class looked horrified. They'd never seen Professor Lupin this angry before. Malfoy kicked his chair out as he got up and made a show of leaving the room, saying something that sounded like "my father." Remus turned to the class and told them to get out their books and finish reading the chapter on Kappas themselves. The students silently took out their books and read the chapter. Not even Hermione dared raise her hand to ask for more work when she finished. The bell finally went, and Remus dismissed them. The students silently packed away their things and filed out the room before bursting into chatter.
Meanwhile in the classroom, Remus took out his wand, spelled the door closed then kicked the chair closest to him. He left his things in the classroom and left to go for a walk by the Black lake to collect his thoughts.
After lunch, he went to the staffroom to see Snape. Snape turned to him and said "Don't dock more points from my house. Malfoy did nothing wrong. He won't be serving the detention."
Remus stared at him "Snape, homophobic comments are never allowed. It's a no brainer. Malfoy will be serving detention for this."
"We both know he won't be" replied Snape.
"I think you're forgetting who the principal is…" threatened Remus, "if Malfoy doesn't attend the detention, this will go further up." Remus then left, knowing full well that the head of Slytherin had always permitted bad behaviour from their students when it came to slurs.
Remus knew he was in detention hall on Monday night, so he sent Malfoy the slip to attend then. By the time Monday night came, Remus only had three students attend – both Weasley twins and their friend Lee Jordan. Remus asked why they had found themselves in detention hall. The boys responded that they got into trouble for sitting in the Three Broomsticks. Remus asked why sitting in the Three Broomsticks got them detention. Lee replied "because we were supposed to be in bed at 10pm on a Tuesday night, not in the Three Broomsticks. Who knew that Professor Vector would go to the Three Broomsticks on a Tuesday night?" Remus just looked at them and sent them to do their lines while he marked his pile of essays.
After the detention, he went to see Professor Dumbledore to explain what had happened with Malfoy. Professor Dumbledore asked Remus to send the memory of the class to the pensive where he then watched what happened. Dumbledore turned to Remus and asked him to sit down. "Sherbert lemon" he offered Remus. He refused "Ah, I hear you're more of a chocolate man."
Dumbledore started "I thought that was handled rather well, Remus. What is the concern?"
"Mr Malfoy never attended the detention and Snape defended him, saying Malfoy wouldn't sit the detention," replied Remus.
"Ah, I see. Well, then I will be dealing with this myself, Remus," stated Dumbledore, "I will bring young Draco to see me."
"Thank you," replied Remus.
"Remus, I have my suspicions, and you don't have to tell me, but what was your relationship with Sirius Black?" asked Dumbledore.
Remus looked at Dumbledore.
"Ah, I understand" replied Dumbledore, "it's no secret among staff here about my own relationship with Gellert, but I understand your desire to keep yours quiet, although I know some of the staff who knew you both from your days as a student also have their suspicions."
"Thank you" replied Remus.
"Anything else you want to talk to me about?" asked Dumbledore.
"No, I best get going," replied he went to leave the room he turned and said, "Thank you, for everything."
