I will say nothing.
Chapter Eight
What a Queen
"I feel so fat," Lyric said as her mom assisted her with her dress. It was a simple light blue knee-length dress that frilled out slightly. It was sleeveless, collaring around her neck. She'd curled her hair so it waved and she let it stay down instead of holding it up in a bun like she usually did.
Kagami couldn't help but laugh at the statement, letting go of the dress once it was zipped." Please, at this point with you girls, I fit into nothing." she said, smiling as she stood up."Don't worry," she said, able to tell how self-conscious her daughter was.
"I'm not even showing that much," she said, looking down at herself. Her bump wasn't too obvious, but just enough she knew people would notice."Does it get more uncomfortable?" she asked, grateful her mom had gone through what she was going through. It made conversations like this more comfortable.
Kagami shrugged."I was working even before I was showing so I kind of got used to it, but it was definitely strange at first."
Lyric removed both hands from her stomach, sighing."Ya," she agreed, trying to brush it off. No one at school had been rude to her so she had no reason to worry. Sure she got the occasional stare or snicker, but no one had called her names... well besides her sister. Blossom had almost entirely stopped muttering insults under her breath, but they still stung and remained.
"Ready?" she heard Blossom asked in a bland tone. She was yet to confront her but had to. She knew something was wrong, and needed to know what.
"Ya," Lyric said, slipping her feet into her slip ons. Even at only three months, she knew heels would be impossible.
"Mommy," Oliver said in an exaggerated tone."Are we gonna go soon?" he asked. Since his big sisters had such a big night, Kagami and Luka decided to take the night to treat their son to a movie and grabbing dinner from his favorite restaurant which would probably end up being McDonald's.
"Soon Ollie," Kagami said, smiling as the child pulled at her shirt dramatically."Do you both need a ride?"
"No, Marinette's driving us all," she said, grabbing the sweatshirt she was pretty sure she'd end up needing. It had been relatively cold that spring, slowly warming as they approached the summer seasons. Saying bye to her parents, she struggled to keep up with her sister who donned a knee-length, dark violet dress with sleeves running to her elbows. It bugged her she wouldn't slow down even slightly, but she didn't ask her to slow down, aware she wouldn't.
On arrival at the gymnasium, she was surprised at how nice it looked. Of course, it wasn't anything incredible but she surprised to see balloons and streamers, along with punch that didn't look poisoned.
"You gonna risk drinking that?" Esther asked as they both looked down at the bowl.
"Nope," Lyric said. Even if it looked safe, she was pretty sure non-poisoned punch would make her puke." So tell me, you finally going to ask Lindsay to dance?" she asked with a smirk. She knew Esther had liked Lindsay Vera since fifth grade and was yet to ask her out.
Esther burned bright red and elbowed her friend in the side."Shut up, someone could hear."
"Come on, since when are you worried about people hearing you have a crush?" she asked with a smirk still present.
Esther shrugged, twirling a strand of purple hair around her finger."I'm not, I just don't want you screaming about it."
Lyric smiled, nodding her head."Don't worry, either Lindsay rejects you and you realize how bitchy she is, or she says yes, and you and her end up making out."
"She's not-" Esther began, red in the face at the suggestion of kissing her crush.
"She is," Lyric interrupted with a simple smile on her freckled face."So tell me, you going to man up, or let another chick steal her."
Esther smiled, rolling her eyes."Fine. If you keep your mouth shut I'll tell her."
Lyric chuckled, stroking her lips with a single finger."My lips are sealed. Now go," she said, gesturing in the direction of where Lindsay was." Reluctantly, Esther's laugh faded beginning to cross the gymnasium, her face pale and red.
Lyric's smile spread feeling an arm drape on her shoulder."Now that you're down dishing out love advice, mind if I steal your attention."
"Since when are you so needy?" she asked, smiling as she looked up at her boyfriend. He wasn't much taller than her, actually, he was tempting being short for a teen his age, but sadly she'd received her mom's genes and was and never would reach the top shelf.
"I'm not, I just want to dance with my girlfriend," he said, the charming smile he showed only to her appearing.
Her face grew hot and she felt her face burn red as the punch."We've been doing a lot of that, huh?"
Hugo smiled, entranced by her light blue eyes."Only twice this week,"
"Going from once a month to twice a week is quite a jump,"
"It is,"
"You two are gross you know that," Logan stated, silently sipping his drink.
"You'll feel gross after drinking that," Sadie said, approaching from behind. Hugo smiled towards his aunt, aware she had a crush on Logan. He had no clue why. Sadie was impeccably smart and a talented artist, like his mom but a thousand times better, while Logan was into basketball and studied the minimum.
"Shut up Sade," Logan snapped, the statement causing the brown-eyed girl to fall pale." I've already gotta deal with these two," he frowned eyeing Esther awkwardly chatting to Lindsay. He sighed."And now it seems I'll have to deal with Esther and Lindsay,"
"Why don't you shut up," Lyric suggested, clinging to her boyfriend's arm.
"You never want to date?" Sadie asked in an innocent voice. Sadie and Logan's relationship was more on the level of brother-sister. They never really hung out just the two of them, but Hugo would occasionally catch Logan telling people who laughed at her behind her back to shut up. It was nice and sometimes it made him feel bad since his mom had asked him to keep an eye on her, even if she was his aunt.
"Not at the moment Sade," he said, ruffling the girl's mop of dark blue hair." Is anything interesting gonna happen or what?" he asked, looking around the gymnasium."I would've thought this party would be more lively."
"It's not prom." Lyric reminded him."What did you think? A good DJ, good food?"
"I dunno, I just thought more would happen."
"Well, we've got prom in one year so you can hold onto your expectations for that," Hugo said, mentally frowning. He didn't expect to be able to finish high school. Maybe, he would be able to, but he doubted it. The baby was due in early December so he wouldn't even be done with half a year of senior year before he was a dad. He doubted he'd finish school let alone get to go to prom.
"I bet it'll be great," Sadie said, frown in place. She was a year behind them all, and though their lunches matched up she still missed out on a lot of the things they got to do.
Logan ruffled her hair again, not realizing how uncomfortable she was at the action."Don't worry Sade. Hue's just hyping it up, I bet it'll s-"
"Okay students," the principal interrupted, struggling with the microphone. The music cut and multiple people sighed as the usual speech before the announcement of Homecoming king and queen began.
"I'm betting Leer has that kid before they announce it." Logan laughed, receiving a weak one from a blushing Sadie as his hand remained on her head.
The principal struggled just as easily, flipping open the paper."Okay, and for homecoming queen, we have Blossom Couffaine,"
Surprised mumbles were sent around and few people clapped as the smileless girl climbed the steps. Lyric frowned, able to tell her twin wasn't comfortable. Blossom didn't get sick as she did, but she still hated attention, especially when it was public attention.
"Who would've thought," she heard Logan mumbled.
"Ya," she said quietly, watching as her twin took the small crown while the homecoming king was declared."Who would've."
With tired steps, Lyric pulled her shoes off whilst entering the bedroom. Gently shutting the door even if no one besides her twin was in the home, she released a long sigh as her swelled feet were released from the shoes that were already too small.
"Dealing with the consequences." she heard Blossom muttered, purposely loud enough she'd hear.
Looking up she saw her sister tossing the crown onto her desk like it meant nothing to her. Frown crossing her face, she straightened up, throwing her shoes to the side."Okay what's your deal?" she asked, receiving a slightly and emotionless expression from her twin.
"What deal?" she asked, pulling her hair down. The dark blue hair she'd straighten fell to her shoulders, slumping much as her shoulders did.
"This deal," she said, gesturing at her."Since I've gotten pregnant and even before that you've been nothing but a jerk. To me, to Hugo. I want to know why,"
"I can assure you nothing is wrong," she said, sitting down at her desk. Not minding her red-faced twin, she opened her English book which Lyric snatched."What the heck Lyric?" she asked with rage in her eyes.
"Tell me what's wrong and I'll give you your book back." Lyric stated, holding the book behind her back.
Reluctantly, Blossom stood up, facing her sister."Nothing is wrong."
"That's a lie and you know it." she stated, backing up."I get it can be hard to talk, but-"
"But nothing, okay. Nothing is wrong with me. I just want to study so please stop asking useless questions and give me my textbook back?" she asked, holding her hand out. She wasn't happy but didn't want to rip it from her.
"You're still lying," Lyric said, holding the book firmly." I'm your twin, you can't lie to me." she reminded her. Looking at her, she was clearly able to read her. She had a secret. There was something she wasn't telling her and something she wanted to remain a secret. She couldn't tell what it was or what was up, but she could clearly see that her sister had a secret, and one that was worrying her.
Pausing, Lyric looked down at the textbook, swiftly tossing it to her."You don't have to tell me, but I want you to quit taking it out on me okay? I don't know what's wrong but something is. I'm here if you want to talk to me, but I'm not here for you to yell at and take your anger out on."
"I know," Blossom muttered, clutching her textbook close to her chest."I know I shouldn't be,"
"Then why do you?" Lyric asked, fist tensing up.
To her surprise, Blossom wilted. Her eyes seemed to grow heavy and the usual confidence she stepped with flurried away. She looked helpless and so vulnerable. It was strange to see." Because you didn't get yelled at," she answered in a near-silent tone that was just loud enough Lyric heard.
"What?" she asked, stepping up to her."I didn't get yelled at for what?"
Blossom stared at her and what she saw was more shocking than anything. Her sister had tears in her eyes. Blossom never cried. When they were younger she would after stubbing her foot but it had been years since she'd seen tears in the blue eyes of her. But these weren't just random tears. These were tears of pain and regret.
Blossom blinked, fighting the tears but there was no fighting them. She tried to fight them for so long, but she couldn't anymore. Standing there, she hooked her head, feeling fat tears roll down her face and she hugged her English textbook.
The sight was shocking and Lyric grew concerned. She forgot all of the rude comments sent her way by her twin and instead stepped forward, gently placing her hands on her shoulders."Bloss, you can talk to me. We're twins after all. I won't be upset,"
Blossom didn't look at her, instead, her gaze drifted past her." I-I..."
Lyric frowned, eyes noticing something. It was on her sister's desk and was obviously something she didn't want seen but it was something that caused her blood to run cold and to a certain memory to surface. Staring at her sister, she was hesitant to ask her the question hitting her." Those pregnancy tests were yours weren't they?" she asked, eyeing the test on her sister's test, the results of which she couldn't see." The ones on my desk, they were yours,"
"Ya,"
