Thanksgiving was the day after tomorrow. Mandy's flight to Massachusetts was in the morning. She was packing when she saw her cell phone vibrating. She picked it up and saw that Jennifer was calling on Skype. She pressed the button to connect. Jennifer popped up on the screen.
Hi. Jennifer signed.
Hi. Mandy signed.
What are you doing?
Packing.
What time is your flight?
Eight o'clock.
Are you excited?
Yeah, I'm also very nervous.
Since you're meeting his parents?
Yeah. I haven't met anyone's parents in years. Last time we were all on a level playing field because we were all deaf.
John's parents will love you, deaf or not.
I know it probably won't be an issue for them but, it's hard to make a good impression, when I can't understand things fully sometimes. When it's not a one on one conversation.
I'm sure everything will go fine.
John said they've been working on their signing, but you know takes a long time for people to learn it.
Yeah I know. At least they care enough to learn how.
Yeah, I think it's really sweet. Despite my nerves, I have a good feeling about me and John. It didn't work with Randy, it didn't work with Blaine, with John, it feels different. It'll work this time.
I think so to. His house in Massachusetts is his second house right?
Yeah. He lives in Tampa, Florida. I have to finish packing.
Ok. Have fun. Bye.
Bye.
On Thanksgiving Day Mandy and John were walking up to his parents house. John looked over at her. He could tell she was very nervous. He got in front of her.
It's ok Mandy. He signed.
I'm nervous, I'm sorry. She signed.
No, don't be sorry. This is a natural reaction. He kissed her. I love you.
I love you too.
They went into the house.
"We're here." John said. John's parents Carol and John Sr. came into the room.
"Hi John." Carol said.
"Hi mom." They hugged.
"Hi son." John Sr. said.
"Hi dad." They hugged.
Hi Mandy. Carol signed slowly. Welcome to our home. She hugged her.
"Thank you." Mandy said. She knew neither of John's parents signing would be good enough to fully converse in the language. "It's so nice to meet you Mrs. Cena.
"Call me Carol."
Hi Mandy. John Sr. signed.
"Hi." Mandy said. "It's nice to meet you Mr. Cena."
"Call me John.
They were eating dinner. Mandy was having fun but sometimes Carol and John Sr. would talk to fast. Mandy was having trouble understanding parts. John looked over and saw that Mandy looked a little bit uncomfortable. He tapped her on the shoulder. She looked over.
Are they talking to fast? He signed. She nodded her head yes. "Mom, dad, you have to slow down a bit." "Mandy's having trouble understanding you."
"Oh, we're so sorry." Carol said looking at Mandy.
"It's ok." Mandy said.
"That was so rude of us." John Sr. said.
"Really, it's ok." "Most people have to get used to being around a deaf person." "Especially in a group situation."
"We'll try to do better." Carol said.
"If you like I can give you a few signing lessons after dinner." They agreed.
Mandy had fun giving them lessons. After a little while they all started talking again. Mandy had went upstairs to go to the bathroom. She and John were leaving as soon as she came back down.
"She is great John." Carol said.
"You've got yourself a definite keeper." John Sr. said.
"I plan on keeping her." John said.
When they got back to John's they were both tired. They put on comfy clothes and laid down on the couch. She was laying beside him.
"I had a lot of fun today." She said
"Good."
"Do you think they liked me?"
"I know they did."
"They're so nice." "Now I know why I have such an amazing boyfriend." She said smiling. She kissed him. "I love you."
"I love you too."
