Wes POV:
Wes could almost feel his pancake coming back up. How could a walker have caught up with us so fast? Jo didn't hesitate to stand and pull out her knife. She quickly ran from one window to the next.
"We're being overrun. Some walkers caught up with us overnight. Grab everything you think we might need. I'll check the basement for any possible food." Jo sprinted to a door, tore it open, and ran down the stairs.
Wes pushed back his chair and shoved the keys in his pocket. He heard the splash of water from downstairs while he ran around tucking anything that he brought with him into his pack. It only took him moments. He then began to think of Jo's stuff so he ran upstairs to the room where she'd been staying. He hadn't explored the other rooms before, but he knew which room she'd stayed in. He ran into the room only to stop in amazement.
The first thing he noticed was the scattered appearance of the room. Her ceiling was painted to look like the sunrise. Clouds were elegantly painted and a Harry Potter tapestry was hung next to a dresser. The bed was grey with pink flowers on the bottom near the foot of the bed. The bookshelf was loaded down with young adult books. A few were spilled across the bed. One was still lying open: Ella Enchanted. All of her other things were packed in her backpack. Wes grabbed it and was about to leave when a gut feeling stopped him.
This place was special to her. He couldn't just let her leave it all behind. He quickly took his own pack in hand and packed a few of the scattered books. Then, he made his way to the stairs. Another feeling swept over him which made him sweep into the room full of albums and grab her childhood album. If they decided to be daring, maybe they could come back for the rest in the future.
Finally, he practically flew down the stairs . . . only to step back as a biter made a wild grab for him as it stumbled through the front door. He kicked it down. There was a bat in the umbrella stand next to the door which led him to snatch the handle and smash another walker that was trying to walk through the door.
"Jo get up here!" Wes screamed as he peaked around the door. There were no more up close but he could see a few zombies stumbling down the street.
"Help!" Wes heard faintly. He whipped his head around and saw Jo fighting three separate walkers while trying to carry three bags of food.
Wes jumped in and took care of one while Jo swiftly stabbed the other two. "We have to leave. Now!" Jo yelped.
"Yeah, I kinda guessed that." Wes groaned as they ran out the front door, all but throwing they're packs into the trunk.
"Keys, keys, keys," Jo mumbled.
"Got 'em," Wes responded, emptying his pocket and practically jumped into the driver's seat.
To say that they barely escaped was an understatement. Walkers were covering the area. Where were all of these last night? Wes could only drive.
Jo pointed her gaze at all of the houses until she realized that the nearby middle school doors were shattered. "The school was used for a refuge until one infected person got in! I never knew that but I guess they had to escape eventually."
Wes only glanced at her before gunning his way back to the freeway.
"Head North!" Jo shouted. "The exit towards the West is closest that way!"
Wes pressed harder on the gas, but he couldn't ignore the gas meter getting lower and lower.
