Chapter 7: You're My Reason
While the lovers finally proclaimed their hearts to each other, Mundus was seething in Hell. He was planning his revenge against the Hunter. He got doubly pissed when he heard that the elder Sparda had eaten the fruit and is now King of the Underworld! He needed to kill the new King. Or I take his heart! With a wicked smile he decided on taking the younger Sparda! I'll give Vergil a choice. The Demon Throne and his power, or his love…He gathered his last loyal demons and decided on an assault on Devil May Cry.
The couple walked through Fortuna a bit before heading back home. Their eyes widened when they saw the demons blocking their way. They smirked and summoned up their weapons.
"Wow, when will they learn?" Dante asked as he aimed Luce and Ombra, deciding to give them their test run. Vergil summoned up the Mirage Edge and took a stance, smirking at the Hunter.
"Never," He answered. Dante smiled and shrugged.
"Thought as much, well, time to teach them again."
"That we must." Vergil said with a sigh. "Shall we?" He bowed and Dante smiled and walked a bit past the elder.
"Thank you, good sir," He flirted. "You're such a gentleman." This had Vergil laughing richly.
"Ah, you've turned into a thespian."
"You know you love it!" Dante said as he winked and blew a kiss. Vergil rolled his eyes and slashed a few demons while Dante shot and dashed.
"Don't tell me you've acted as well."
"Babe, I had my own dressing room, costumes and my own makeup. Of course, I made quite a Juliet." This had Vergil smirking evilly. Oh really?
"Hey, I know what you're thinkin' Babe!" Dante laughed as he downed a few more demons with his energy swords. "And the answer, anytime." Vergil blinked then gasped. I can look up his skirts! YES! The two stopped short when they saw the one demon who destroyed their childhood forever.
"Mundus."
The Demon Prince looked at the two before him and for a moment he did a double take. He forgot that they were twins. Even though Demon Law and Dynamics wouldn't shun their pairing…. Their power is quite impressive.
"I will give you a choice, Elder Son of Sparda." Mundus said as he looked at Vergil. "The Demon Throne and your power or your love." He nodded and a demon knocked Dante out from behind! Vergil growled and glared.
"You can't preach about honor and fair play after all that you have done." Mundus said. "As we speak, I have forces gathering sacrifices."
"You are not going to get away with this."
"Your choice is simple, if you choose power, Dante will die. If you surrender your power, I will surrender him to you, alive and well. The choice is solely yours. I will await you at the beginning of your downfall with your beloved Hunter." Mundus and the demon who held Dante vanished and Vergil dropped to his knees. Again, he had to make a choice. It's not hard for me this time. He stood up and made way to the office where the ladies were waiting.
"What the hell happened Romeo?" Lady asked. "You're short a Juliet."
"Dante was taken by Mundus. He's exchanging Dante for my power and the crown."
"Well, what are you going to do?" Trish asked the elder. Vergil looked at her as if her brains were gone.
"It is not a trick question for me." Vergil answered. "I love him, and I WILL NOT lose my family AGAIN!" With that, he and the two female Hunters made way to the tower. On the topmost floor, awaited Mundus and suspended in the air, fast asleep and his aura glowing blood red, was Dante.
"What is your choice Elder Son?" Mundus asked. Vergil sighed and took a knee.
"I surrender my power, and the throne." He said firmly. He winced as he felt the sudden change. His hair turned black, his eyes turned green, and his skin was tanned. His body was still powerfully built. The royal blue power turned black and formed into an orb which flew to Mundus' waiting hand. Mundus waved a hand and Dante fell into Vergil's arms, still asleep.
"Take him and go. A deal is a deal." He spoke. Vergil was about to turn when Mundus rose from his seat and threw a spear of energy.
"No!" Dante cried as he sprang awake and leapt in the way, taking the hit. Vergil's eyes widened and his heart broke.
"No," Vergil whispered as Dante collapsed. His eyes welled up with tears, his anguish was great. Mundus blinked then smirked.
"My, he actually sacrificed himself for you, the very one who killed him." Vergil pulled Dante to him and sobbed. No….this can't be….I can't…..I won't…LOSE MY FAMILY AGAIN! Mundus aimed another spear but it didn't hit. It in fact backfired, smashing the orb. The power flared as soon as it was freed, immediately returning to its Master. Vergil clenched his teeth as his body took the power back. He gently set down the fallen Hunter before he triggered full Sin. Mundus' eyes widened at the wicked looking Demon King, who was fully restored, boosted in power again and was pissed beyond hell that his mate was taken away.
"THIS TIME YOU WILL NOT BE GETTING OUT!" The enraged Sin said as he unsheathed Yamato. Mundus didn't have time to react as Vergil dashed and ran the blade through Mundus' heart.
"NOW DIE!" The Sin roared. Mundus screamed his last and exploded. Vergil looked over Dante and carefully but lovingly picked him up into his arms.
"My Heart, please don't leave me. I need you. I love you." He held the Hunter close, silently praying for his return. His heart broke all over again when Dante did not move right away, believing his beloved was dead. Again, Mundus won…
"Ow," A soft cry was heard from his arms. Vergil gasped softly, easing his grip, looking down into his beloved's icy blue eyes, which were bright and full.
"Hi Babe, did you miss me?" He asked. Vergil smiled and kissed the Hunter deeply. Oh thank God….
"Let's go home." He whispered. At Dante's nod, the elder triggered again, held Dante tight and returned to Devil May Cry.
The ladies smiled when the two came back and greeted Dante, who was gently set down on the couch. Vergil watched with amusement as they asked questions. Trish broke away and went to the elder.
"I see you still have your power, but it seems different."
"I did lose it." Vergil said as he sat back in his seat. "I gave it up willingly…I almost lost Dante as well. He jumped in the way of Mundus' assault. He…I can't lose him..."
"Oh Babe, I'm right here." Dante said as he hugged the elder. Vergil held him tight and sobbed. Dante soothed him, reassuring the elder that he would never leave and of his love.
"Babe, you've changed so much. Even your power knew it."
"You mean so much to me My Heart." Vergil said softly. "Despite it all, I've always loved you. I still do and always will."
"I know Babe."
"No, you don't. You are my reason. I vowed to never be weak again to protect my family. More than once I failed for losing my way."
"But you're home now." Dante said.
"But we are not complete yet." Vergil whispered. Dante hugged him.
"We will be." Dante whispered as he held the elder again. "And you are my reason too. Both you and Nero. I love you both." Vergil looked up at the mention of their son. It was almost time…
Soon my son, you'll be home with us again.
