Chapter 8: A Presidential Meeting
Chase noticed that Leo wasn't as tense as he used to be, but he still felt that underlying disappointment coming from him. A few days after that conversation, Leo suddenly found himself stuck in the lab. However, this was because agent Graham wanted the entire bionic team there when the president came to visit. Little did he know, his siblings were about to make a very bold move and that move was one that would get Graham fired and one that would get their father back as their leader. In fact, Adam, Bree and Chase had reflected what Leo had told them and there was some guilt written across their faces, Leo noticed.
The Lab Rats sometimes glanced at their younger brother as he stood behind them. Leo was still was thinking about what Douglas told him about just letting go of the past and to not let anything break their family relationships. However, this was going to be their chance to make things right between them and their family. Leo looked at Donald and Douglas and saw they didn't want to be there either. Wherever they continued looking at him, he felt some of his anger melt away. Just then, Leo realized that his siblings were just as shaken up as he was. Then Agent Graham raced into the lab.
"Alright everyone, look alive! The president is on his way in!" Graham shouted. He looked at Leo, judging him by the way he looked at him. He was looking at his clothes. "Leo, what are you wearing? You're the Mission Specialist, so where's your uniform."
"I don't have one," Leo answered.
"You 'don't have one'?" Graham parroted but in a mocking tone. The kid silently groaned this man was getting on his nerves. Leo shrugged.
"Oh, lay off the kid, Agent Graham," Douglas said, coming to stand next to Leo like he did when Krane faced them at the school. "He hasn't been having a good week." He gestured to his nephew's broken ankle.
"Fine. Besides, we've got to show the president that everythingis running smoothly."
"More like running on a plateau with jagged rocks," Leo thought. He was also insulted that Graham had commented on his appearance in the first place.
He took a breath and calmed down. He had to keep his emotions in control so he wouldn't uncontrollably fire a laser sphere.
"Don't listen to him, Leo," Douglas said. "He's just trying to rattle your chain." He saw him breathe shakily. "Okay, just relax."
"Okay two things: one, no one says rattle your chain anymore. And two, I'm not worried about the way I look, I'm worried about getting nervous and setting off a laser sphere."
"Well you can keep calm because, I disabled them so you wouldn't expose yourself to the President," Douglas said. He didn't know why and he was afraid to admit it but, Douglas did not want Leo's arm exposed because he might actually end up with Graham and suffer Adam, Bree and Chase's original fit. For once, Leo was actually grateful that they were turned off. The man pat Leo on his shoulder. "You'll be fine. And don't think I didn't notice, but you are worrying about Adam, Bree and Chase. I'm sure they're going to do something to make it up to you."
Leo gave his uncle a suspicious look but Douglas just smirked. Like he knew something was going to happen.
"Wait, what are you..." Leo begun but he was interrupted when the secret servicemen came inside and soon Mr. President followed.
Graham gave his boss a welcoming smile. Mister President, welcome to the home of the world's first bionic humans."
Chase couldn't help but introduce himself first.
"Hello, Mr. President, I'm Chase—"
He was interrupted when Adam quickly came and bowed down.
"Good tidings, your lordship," Adam said, as Chase facepalmed himself. The president shot him a questionable look.
"I' m guessing you're Adam," Mr. President said.
"And I'm guessing you're disappointed, " Bree said with smile. "I'm Bree."
"It's nice to finally meet all of you," Mr. President answered, giving them a welcoming smile. (Oh was Leo glad that the president didn't notice him, Donald or Douglas).
However, he spoke too soon because Mr. President glanced at him.
"And who are your young man?" he asked but Leo did not even know what to say. Unfortunately for him, Douglas pointed him out.
"Oh, this," Douglas said, putting his hands-on Leo's shoulder and pushed him in front of him. "Is my nephew, and their brother, Leo Dooley."
Leo glared at Douglas who just shrugged. The boy turned and nodded.
"The Mission Specialist, sir. Pleasure to meet you."
"Well, the pleasure is mine for welcoming me into your home," Mr. President said, looking at Leo and his siblings before looking at the Lab Rats. "I just want to thank all of you for all of your hard work and all the lives you have saved. And by extension, with the help of your teammates."
"It's our honor, sir," Chase said with a smile.
"Alright, team," Graham said, looking at the kids but Leo (who was rolling his eyes by the way.) "Let's show our commander-in-chief what you're made of. Bree, you're up."
Bree smiled. "Absolutely Agent Graham. This is my super speed." Bree began to fake a glitch. She ran in a swift circle around Mr. President and the secret servicemen. However, she suddenly went around Graham in a chaotic fashion. Leo's mouth dropped while Douglas was smirking, over his nephew's and the FBI agents' heads. Even Donald's mouth was wide open.
Graham slowly got up. "What is wrong with you?"
Bree shrugged.
"Oops," Bree said with a fake smile. "I've been on so many celebrity tours across America, I didn't have time training."
Donald quickly came to Bree's side, as Leo found himself listening to their conversation.
"Bree, knock it off, the president's right there," Donald hissed to her. She glared at her father.
"I am aware of that," Bree said, giving her father a pointed look before she looked sympathetically at Leo. He didn't know why but Leo knew that his sister was doing this on purpose. Donald caught on what she was doing, being the tech mogul, he was.
"Sorry about that, sir," Graham apologized.
"Mr. President, how about I demonstrate my molecular kinesis?" Chase asked with a pleasant smile.
"Sure," Mr. President said. Chase smiled and raised his hand, lifting up a cup nearby. However, his hand suddenly faltered and then he dumped the smoothie that was in the cup onto his head.
"Oops," Chase said. The president was getting more and more confused.
"Graham, what is going on?" he asked, and Leo could tell he was getting angrier by the minute.
"It's fine," Graham said, with a fake smile as the smoothie dripped down his face. "Um, Adam, why don't you show the president what you do with your blowing force thingy."
Adam nodded. "Yes, my pleasure." Douglas nudged Leo's shoulder.
"You might want to stand behind me, kid," Douglas said.
"Why?" Leo asked with a shrug. Adam began using his Pressurized Lung Capacity Douglas had given him when Adam and Chase were pitting themselves against each other. Douglas smirked, quickly pushing Leo behind him and shielding him from Adam's blow. Leo watched as his eldest brother attack Graham, who held onto Leo's cyberdesk.
"Okay, that's enough!" Graham shouted.
"His bionic breath must be stuck," Chase said with fake terror.
"Davenport, do something!" Graham shouted.
"Oh, look who finally needs my help," Donald commented with a smirk.
"Don't worry, Mr. President. I'm sure one of these buttons will take care of everything."
"No, don't hit!" Leo began but it was too late. Graham had already pressed the button and Mr. President and his secret servicemen fell into the compartment Leo and Douglas had escaped in. Leo's mouth dropped but mostly out of humor and amazement. Douglas was glad the kids really did outdo themselves.
"Get me out of here!" the president shouted.
"Nice going, Graham," Donald said sarcastically as Graham glared at him. "That's one way you can get noticed by your boss."
Five minutes later, they finally got Mr. President out of the compartment. Of course, the man was outraged. He could not believe Graham was an incompetent leader, not fit to lead the team. The man tried to appeal to Mr. President, but the man refused. He ordered his men to find someone else to replace Graham. However, Bree, Adam and Chase pointed out that the replacement was Donald, their father and their real leader. They had revealed that Graham had in fact, only been doing this to make money off of them. And that was where Leo realized that his siblings had in fact been faking their glitching. So, they could get Davenport back in power, but he had some feeling it had something to do with him. After the fact had been revealed, Graham was grabbed and then taken out of the room.
"We owe you an apology," Chase said.
"Our bionics didn't really glitch. We just had to expose Graham and show you that he wasn't qualified to lead us," Bree said.
"I figured something was up. I've seen the footage of your abilities," Mr. President said.
"Actually sir, we would not have been able to realize that if had not been for our brother," Chase said to the president. Leo looked at his siblings in confusion. Bree nodded as she looked at Leo.
"Yeah, because without Leo," Bree said with a smile as Chase and Adam let Leo stand in between them. "We would not have realized that our lives as Bionic heroes was important than being famous without him."
"Yeah," Chase said. He, Bree and Adam looked at Leo as Chase put his hand on his little brother's shoulder.
"Me?" Leo asked in surprise.
"Yeah," Chase said with a smile. "You really did help us realize the kind of man that Graham really was and we're sorry. For everything buddy. And we'll never let it ruin us again."
Leo realized then and there that his siblings were trying to apologize.
"Until next time," Adam said with a smirk, looking at Leo's sprained ankle. However, he was not smiling when Chase elbowed his brother in the rib. However, Leo smiled.
"Thanks guys," Leo said. Mr. President grinned a little bit.
"Well, if that is what you all have to say about your brother, then I see you guys are going to be just fine," Mr. President said. "You appear to be their anchor, Mr. Dooley. And it looks like they're your anchor too"
Leo looked at his brothers and sister then at Douglas and Donald (who were looking at their kids with pride). Then, he glanced at the president and nodded.
"Yeah, I guess we are," Leo said with a smirk. "Thank you, sir."
"It was a pleasure to meet all of you," Mr. President said. He looked to Donald. "Mr. Davenport, we had no right to invade your privacy or coming in between you and your children. If you can keep me posted, then I don't see a problem here."
"Can do, sir," Donald said and the two shook hands.
Mr. President bade the family a farewell as he looked at the rest of the FBI, telling them they were off this assignment. After the FBI team began putting their things away, the siblings were in the center.
"Well, that was a rough couple of days," Chase commented. Bree gave him a sarcastic, 'I hadn't noticed' look before she looked at Leo.
"Look, Leo, we're sorry we ignored the mission," Bree said. She looked at his sprained ankle. "We never meant for you to get hurt. After Graham threatened us, we saw you were right."
"Well, someone told me that I can't stay mad at you guys for every little thing," Leo said (He could have sworn Douglas was smirking but it was unclear to him because that man usually didn't treat Leo the way he had been doing these past few days.)
"Is it too late for a group hug?" Adam said, holding his arms out. "Bring it in, siblings!"
Chase, Bree and Leo all shrugged and joined their older brother in a hug that did not go unnoticed
All they knew was the siblinghood between them was beginning to regrow.
