Half an hour later, Jackie and the Joelamosia were outside the TARDIS. The Joelamosia was busy fixing all the chaos of the night, while Jackie was helping the wounded Al-Zephani. Among other things, Jackie had retrieved her cell phone. The Doctor emerged from the TARDIS.
Jackie turned to her. "They found Carlos' body."
"I'm sorry I wasn't able to help him. I did try to warn him."
"He came to the planet to find a woman who could foretell the future. But he never got to see you."
The Doctor realized Jackie thought she was that woman. "Oh! But he couldn't have meant me. Remember, I couldn't talk to anyone before I met the two of you."
"Really? Then it must have been Cassandra."
"No…she didn't appear until tonight when the TARDIS arrived. No, I think the woman Nyusi meant was the Joelamosia."
Jackie turned around. "What? He's a woman? She doesn't have any breasts! And Phrropox said the Abelard were mammals."
"We provide milk for our young by laying eggs," explained the Joelamosia.
And then Jackie remembered, the Joelamosia's confrontation with the Kraal assassins, her meeting with the Angels, her instructions in the TARDIS; what Jackie thought were orders, were actually predictions. "Yes, that's why Phrropox shanghaied her," explained the Doctor. "He needed someone to counter Cassandra's own future telling abilities, which were compromised by travelling in the TARDIS. The fact that the Joelamosia are compelled to tell the truth was a special bonus."
There was a pause. "Well, I guess this is where we say goodbye," the Doctor said with regret.
"Doctor wait! I know I'm pretty shallow. And fairly selfish. And irresponsible. And I hope you have no strong views on chastity, because I'm really bad at that. But this experience has changed me. I meant a lot of it was fun! I mean even more of it was terrifying. And I want to help you. Because Phrropox wasn't just a cruel gangster. These people are really bad. And I need to help you..."
Then Jackie felt the Joelamosia's hand on her shoulder. "The Doctor has little time left. You don't want to be with her when it runs out."
The Doctor embraced Jackie. "Thank you for the offer. But I should tell you that when the Angels and Cassandra stole my TARDIS, they also killed two of my companions. Maybe we'll meet again, sometime when it's safe." She waved sadly, and got into the TARDIS, which then dematerialized.
Inside, the Doctor flicked a switch on the console and a hologram of Cassandra appeared. "I'm sorry I wasn't able to do more," the Doctor apologized. "It's a very sophisticated virus. Even turning you off in 'safe' mode won't stop you from dissolving within an hour."
"Yes, yes," Cassandra replied impatiently. "You're very sad that the woman who killed two of your friends and was complicit in how many more deaths tonight is not going to live. You tried to save me for a reason. Get on with it."
"What happened to the TARDIS?"
"You can guess most of it. The Angels wanted to feast on it once they caught it. But the 'master' behind the scenes convinced them they couldn't risk doing so when Red Dwarf was about to undergo a thermonuclear explosion. I was transmitted instructions and activated them with seconds to spare.
"The TARDIS materialized and dematerialized in three times in distinct points in space and time. This had the effect, of course, of confusing my prediction abilities, which is why I was not able to outthink you. As part of these movements, the Array started to activate."
"But what is the Array?" the Doctor wondered.
"It's clearly temporal in nature. And given the importance of Kochanski to our 'master,' probably inter-dimensional as well. I don't know more, but the fact that Phrropox risked everything to make sure it worked, instead of killing you, should tell you all you need to know. You're not going to find it using the TARDIS, anymore than a needle can find the pants it worked on once the thread's been cut. But then something happened that neither I, the Angels nor the conspiracy monitoring events expected. All the power suddenly shut down. Whoever your enemy is, they knew enough about the TARDIS to know this wasn't your doing. The War Quartet went to investigate."
"Yes, I noticed they weren't there. What happened to them?"
"Why don't you go look for them?" Cassandra smirked.
The Doctor switched Cassandra off, and left the console room. About a thousand feet away, she found several piles of rubble. She realized it was three of the Quartet, including their leader, the one who had killed Captain Hollister and taken his voice. There was no sign of the fourth one. Nervously, she took out her screwdriver, and activated a setting.
"Hi there, Doctor!" A hologram of Jackie appeared and happily waved. "I know I'm not actually Jackie, but a hologram to give a voice and face to this program to search the TARDIS because you don't yet trust the TARDIS's own sensors. What's up?"
"Jackie, do you see any sign of the fourth of the War Quartet?"
"Not a thing."
The Doctor had an idea. "Jackie I'm going to ask you to note a peculiar oddity. It's a bit complicated but…"
"No Doctor, there are no Silents on board the TARDIS."
"And I don't think a Silent, however powerful, would be able to kill an Angel. Jackie, is there anyone else on board the TARDIS?"
"Aside from the holograms of me and Cassandra, there is no one in the TARDIS aside from you."
The Doctor switched off the hologram, and nervously looked around. She quickly raced back to the console room, and switched Cassandra back on. "Three of the War Quartet are dead."
"Only three? Then I suppose that explains the Angel I saw when I looked at the Malachi circuit."
"You're lying. The Malachi circuit serves as a log that contains the TARDIS' entire history. Only Rassilon can access it."
"Now you know that's not true. The Daleks were able to access them, near the end of the time war."
"But not this one!"
"Doctor, forget your injured pride. The TARDIS needed power to get to Manethysia and the circuit was the only thing not affected by the shutdown. And remember when the Silence exploded the TARDIS and you had to reboot the universe? That left an anomaly I was able to access."
"I don't believe you!"
"You know I'm right. Remember how you were shocked unconscious when the TARDIS arrived in Manethysia and you felt the telepathic circuits? That's because you were in touch with the Malachi circuit."
The Doctor reluctantly agreed this was true. "So, what did you see?"
"The TARDIS has a little more than a year left. Then it is destroyed in an explosion."
"It's been destroyed before, and come back."
"Oh, no doubt. But not this time." Suddenly, Cassandra's hologram started to vibrate and distort. Her end was near. "Listen Doctor, your enemy has a name. That enemy has been watching you for a very long time. Behind the Mara, before the Time War. And that name…is Spencer!" And with that, Cassandra's hologram shattered into a thousand points of light, which all went out.
"Spencer?!" the Doctor asked incredulously. She looked at another monitor, which reported the results of the diagnostic she had been running. No connection to the Array, no communications link outside the TARDIS, no sign of anyone else in the TARDIS. The Doctor sighed and reluctantly set course for Sheffield.
It was Yasmin Khan's funeral. Her family was distraught, while Graham was speechless with grief. Ryan was furious with grief. "How could this have happened? You were supposed to save her!" And he slapped the Doctor.
"I suppose I deserved that," she replied.
