Hiccup was running as fast as his legs could carry him for as long as he could go until he fell unconscious in the middle of a clearing with no one around for miles.
After a while, vultures found him and came to start picking at him just as another creature came past and scares them all off.
The creature that found the boy turned out to be a young Night Fury, the most dangerous and rarest of all the dragons.
The dragon approaches the young boy and lightly tapped him with his front paw and he moans, gesturing he's alive.
The little dragon didn't know what to do since he doesn't know if there are any nearby people just as he hears something in the distance.
"We still need to work on the net, Seems the fish have worn it thin." A male voice says and the young dragon follows where it's coming from.
"I'll get to working on it tonight, I set up the second net for our food." A second more scruffier voice says and the Night Fury lets out a cry for help, getting their attention.
One of them was a more athletic guy. He wore a green sleeveless vest on top of a white buttoned up shirt that looked very shaggy. He sported a scruffy goatee on the tip of his chin.
The other guy looked vastly different from him. He was a much bigger fellow. He had golden hair but he seemed to be bald on the head. He had a thick unibrow and a matted moustache that must at least be two feet in length.
"Did you hear that?" The first male asks.
"I think it came from over there!" The more muscular male says as they follow where the dragon call came from and find Hiccup. "Hey, Flynn. I think you should see this!" The big hairy man called out to his friend who walks over to find the boy.
"What is he doing out this far out on his own?" Flynn Rider asks as he kneels down and sees the boy is at least alive.
The harry man then looked and saw the Night Fury hiding behind a tree root. "Flynn, I think there's a Night Fury staring at us."
"Gobber, what are you talking about? There are no Night Fury's here." Flynn informed his friend as he looked to see the hiding baby dragon.
"Well, then go check it out, what is it?" Gobber asks as Flynn approaches it.
"It is not a Night Fury, it's a disfigured Night Terror." Flynn states.
"It looks like a Night Fury." Gobber says as Flynn gets a good look of the dragon.
"Oh...it's a Night Fury." Flynn says calmly as the Night Fury tilts it's head in curious before Flynn lets out a scream of terror. "It's a Night Fury! Run, Gobber! Run for my life!" He takes off running away from the group.
"No, wait, Flynn, I think he's tamed!" Gobber notices as the Night Fury walks up to Hiccup and rubs up against him in worry. "I think he's with the kid. Besides, they're both little and all alone."
"Don't you know what happens when they get older?" Flynn asks.
"What happens?" Gobber asks, not understanding.
"They get bigger! And if that kid tamed a Night Fury, he's going to have been a part of some crazy tribe. And I don't want to be around when they come looking for him!" Flynn states.
"Oh, but look at him! He's so small and all alone." Gobber says as he approaches the two. "Hey, Flynn, can we keep him?"
"Gobber, you're talking about a Viking! Vikings prey on guys like us." Flynn says as he yanks on his friends mustache to bring him to his level to prove his point.
"Maybe he'll be on our side." Gobber tells Flynn. "Think of what we can do with a Night Fury with us."
"Ha! Gobber, you've had some crazy schemes, but that's..." Flynn was in the middle of saying when he got an idea. "Wait, a minute, I've got it. What if he's on our side? You know, having a dragon rider with a Night Fury might not be such a bad idea."
"So, we're keeping him?" Gobber asks as he picks up the boy and the Night Fury stays as close as he could as he takes a res across Gobber' s shoulders.
"Of course. Who's the brains of this outfit?" Flynn asks with a snarky smile and Gobber thinks for a second. "Exactly. Come on, let's find this kid some shade." He says as the two go deeper into the forest.
The first thing Hiccup felt was the sensation of cold water being sprinkled on his face, caused by Flynn sprinkling some water on his face.
When he opened his eyes, he found himself in a place he didn't recognize. As he began to sit up, rubbing his head and he noticed two men curiously observing him.
As Hiccup groaned, Flynn spoke up. "Uh. You okay, Kid?"
"I guess so..." Hiccup breathed out in exhaustion.
"Ye nearly died!" Gobber says.
The thinner guy patted himself on the back. "Yeah. I saved ya." Flynn patted himself on the back, but Gobber than shot him a furious glare. "Well, okay. Gobber helped...you know, a little..."
Hiccup could tell that these guys were buddies. Gobber seemed to be a big guy but didn't seem to be all that harmful. The other guy, however, seemed a bit more of the charmingly arrogant kind.
Hiccup got out of the hammock he was lying on. He glanced around and saw that they seemed to be in the middle of a forest of some kind. He sighed and began to walk out, rubbing his shoulder sadly. "Well, thanks for your help."
And he began walking away, Gobber an Flynn look to one another before back to the boy.
"Hey. Where ya going?" Flynn wonders.
Hiccup didn't know how to answer that question at the moment. "Nowhere..." he said sadly.
"Oh, boy. He looks blue." Flynn says as they watch the boy walk off.
"I'd say bore dirty brown." Gobber comments on Hiccup's hair.
"No, I mean he's feeling depressed." Flynn explains.
As he walked out, Hiccup came across the Night Fury who came back and was looking at him curiously and had a very playful look in its eyes as it looked at the small boy for the first time.
As Hiccup stared at it, the two fellows came up behind him. "Hey kid. The name's Flynn Rider. And this here, is my muscle slash best friend, Gobber. We've been meaning to ask ya...is that your dragon?" He gestured to the dragon.
Hiccup shook his head as he wasn't old enough to have one back at Berk.
Flynn put his arm on Hiccup's shoulder. "Well, kid. The dragon clearly seems fond of ya. He brought ya to our Oasis here and refused to leave after we took ya in. Looks like you just got yourself a Night Fury. I...assume you know what a Nigh Fury is?"
Hiccup nodded his head slowly. Gobber, seeing Hiccup's sad posture, nudged Flynn to change the conversation.
Flynn cleared his throat and began. "So...where ya from?"
Hiccup didn't want to talk about his past right now. He shoved Flynn's arm away and began walking away.
"Who cares? I can't go back." Hiccup says as Flynn jogged up and blocked his path. He had a happy expression on his face after hearing that statement.
"Oh, so you're an outcast! That's great! So are we!" Flynn says as Gobber walked up, nodding cheerfully.
"What'd ya do, lad?" Gobber asks curious.
Hiccup sighed ad he stared at the floor. "Some...something terrible. I don't wanna talk about it."
"Good. Please Cause we don't wanna hear about it." Flynn, being the insensitive fellow he sometimes was, merely said.
Gobber gave Flynn a reproachful look before back to the boy. "Anything we can do?" He asked Hiccup.
"Not unless you can change the past..." Hiccup muttered more to himself than to them in sadness.
Gobber ruffled hiccup's hair trying to lift his spirits a little. "Ya know, lad, in times like these, my buddy Flynn here says ye gotta put yer behind in yer past...or...was it...?" The poor fellow tried hard to remember what the saying actually was.
If it was any normal day, Hiccup would've laughed, but not today Flynn shook his head, chuckling as he patted his friend's shoulder.
"Ugh, sit down before ya hurt yourself. Amateur." Flynn says as he then turned to Hiccup. "It's 'you gotta put your past behind ya!' Look kid, bad things happen, and you can't do anything about it. Right?"
"Right..." Hiccup sighed as to his surprise, Flynn snapped his fingers at Hiccup, jerk in him in shock.
"Wrong! When the world turns it's back on you, you turn your back on the world!" Flynn says as he gestures his hands straight out slowly.
Hiccup raised an eyebrow at Flynn in confusion to that. "Huh...that's not what I was taught."
Flynn chuckled as he pulled Hiccup in for a shoulder hug. "Well, I think it's time you got a new lesson." He then picked up Hiccup and placed him on the Nigh Fury's back.
Flynn then clambered onto his own dragon's back, which was a Deadly Nadder, named Treecutter. "Listen kid. This is one of the many teachings I learnt when I journeyed to the vast savannahs of Africa."
Hiccup looked at them, confused. "Wait, why were you in Africa?" He asks curiously.
"That's not important." Flynn says as Hiccup looks down to the Night Fury who looked up in the same confusion. "What's important is - Hakuna matata."
Hiccup scratched his head, not understanding what he just said. "Hakuna ma-what?"
Gobber chuckled. "Ha-kuna Ma-ta-ta! It means no worries!"
Flynn nodded in agreement before beginning to sing. "Hakuna matata. What a wonderful phrase..."
"Hakuna matata." Gobber joined in. "It ain't no passing craze!"
Flynn began bobbing his head as he led Treecutter through the forest as Hiccup and the Night Fury followed into the jungle. "It means no worries. For the rest of your days! It's our problem free philosophy. Hakuna matata!"
They had reached a clearing inside the forest as Flynn got down and gave Hiccup his dagger from a satchel he was wearing.
As Hiccup took it, he repeated it still not getting it. "Hakuna matata?"
Gobber nodded, smiling as he was riding Grump. "Yeah. It's our motto!"
Hiccup scratched his head as he didn't know what a motto was. "What's a motto?"
"Nothin'. What's the motto with you?" Flynn broke out into chuckles heartily with Gobber as the two younger boys looked confused.
Gobber wiped away tears of laughter as he patted the Night Fury Hiccup was sitting on. "Yeah. Ye know, lad, these two words will solve all yer problems!"
Flynn nodded in agreement. "That's right. Take Gobber for example. Why...when he was a young Viking!"
Hiccup looked at Gobber as he cleared his throat, took in a deep breath and bellowed. "When I was a young VIKIIIINNNNGGG!"
Flynn caught Hiccup's eyes and grinned, inserting his pinkie finger into his ear and clearing it. "Nice..." he said.
"Thanks." Gobber replied, not understanding the sarcasm in Flynn's voice.
Flynn stood with a playful bravado and began to elaborate. "He found his aroma lacked a certain appeal. He could clear any area after every meal."
Gobber chimed in with a as he look on his face as he remembered his past. "I was a sensitive soul. Though I seem thick skinned. And it hurt, that my friends never stood downwind! And OH THE SHAME!"
Flynn grabbed Hiccup off the dragon and shook him playfully. "He was a shame!"
"I thought of changing my name!" Gobber continued with vibrato.
Flynn shrugged at Hiccup as he watched these two perform like a live show. "Oh what's in a name!"
Gobber threw his hand up into the air, grasping thin air and lowering it, in the hat of the moment. "And I got down on it! Every time that I-" Before Gobber could sing anymore, Flynn rushed and clapped his hand in Gobber's mouth, shutting him up.
"Gobber! Not in front of the kids..." Flynn gestures over to the two newcomers.
Gobber's eyes widened as he chuckled awkwardly. "Oh, sorry."
Hiccup glanced at the Night Fury with with a confused look that it returned, as neither of them could understand these two at all.
Flynn and Gobber continued together singing as Gobber pulled Flynn up on a swing. "Hakuna matata. What a wonderful phrase. Hakuna matata...ain't no passing craze."
As they sang, Hiccup began to feel himself bobbing to the catchy tune, as sure enough, a wide grin spread across his face as he began to join in the singing. "It means no worries! For the rest of yer days..."
Flynn gave him the thumbs up, hanging upside down from the swing. "Yeah! Sing it, kid!" He patted the smiling Night Fury's head as he sang.
"It's our problem free...philosophy" Gobber and Flynn joined in as the three sang together. "Hakuna matata!"
"Welcome to our humble home." Flynn shows Hiccup where they live as it seems they have everything set up to live happily with everything in the open.
"You live here?" Hiccup asks in shock.
"We live wherever we want." Flynn tells Hiccup as they lead him over to the river to get some food.
"Yep. Home is where your rump rests." Gobber says with a chuckle.
"It's amazing." Hiccup says in shock.
Gobber pulled on a rope attached to a tree which pulled a net in the water that comes up filled with fish.
"We've got some grub!" Gobber says as they take the net and head back to where they have a fireplace setup and begin to cook their food.
"Trust me, kid. This is the best life. No rules, no responsibilities. And best of all, no worries." Flynn says as he passes Hiccup a few fish.
Hiccup looks to the Night Fury who also seemed hungry so he held out a fish for him to take and noticed he had no teeth.
"Huh, toothless. I could've sworn Night Fury's had..." Hiccup was saying when the Night Fury revealed retractable teeth and chowed down on the fish in Hiccup's hand.
After some time, Hiccup had begun to regain his usual, cheerful manner as the days passed on and grew fond of the Night Fury he decided to name Toothless.
