Ch17
Frederick Chase sighed as sat on his back porch and read the letters from Magnus and Annabeth. "Glad you are both doing well," he said to himself as he held the letter in his hands. Oh Athena please watch over both of them and protect them he thought as he looked up at the sky.
"Maybe one-day things will go back to normal," he said to himself as he got up and went to the little altar he made to burn sacrifices to Athena. "This new house is bigger now; hopefully, the next time they come they will enjoy it," he said as he looked at his new yard. He and his wife and two mortal children had just moved to San Francisco and he was alone while they were doing chores and school. He had spoken to Magnus and Annabeth about moving here and even though they haven't officially answered him. Either way though they would always be welcome here.
"Natalie, your son is safe. I hope he will come home one day," he muttered as he cleaned the altar. He knew that he and Magnus had a close relationship but he knew that his nephew would not leave his daughter alone. In the end he was just glad that both of them were safe at the camp Which isn't bad, I know that he will protect her with everything he has. He made a small sacrifice to Athena this morning as soon as he had received the letters from his daughter and nephew.
"Frederick Chase," said a smooth voice behind him. Frederick jumped and turned around as he felt a powerful presence behind him. Behind him was a man who appeared to be around his own age with flowing golden hair and wearing what appeared to be a lumberjack outfit. He had a firm build and appeared to be a calm guy. However, the man's aura and eyes definitely emitted something that was not human. In fact he could tell by just looking at him that he was a God.
"Who are you sir," he said as politely as he could as he felt the man's gaze upon him. It wasn't hostile, but he could tell that this man wanted something and would not take no for an answer.
"So you are Natalie's brother. I can see the resemblance," The man said with a small laugh. "Don't worry I am not here to hurt you I just have a few questions I want to ask," he said in a smooth tone.
"Natalie? You know my sister?" Frederick asked confused.
The man smiled at him and nodded, "Yeah we were really close back in the day. She loved the outdoors as much as me. We split up but on friendly terms, though I did leave her with something or someone to be precise," he said with a wink.
No he thought as he felt his eyes widen. "You are Magnus's father," he whispered as he watched the man smile at him.
"Yeah we had a son together. Magnus, I found out that you had adopted him," the man said in a cool tone. "Don't get me wrong I have nothing against that, I just wanted to know if I could speak with him."
"H-He isn't here right now," Frederick said as firmly as he could. "He is as the Camp."
"Camp?" The man said as if confused. "What camp?"
Frederick did his best to try and not look surprised, "You know the camp for demigods?" He said as if it were the most obvious thing though he still tried to sound polite.
The man scratched his head as if he were trying to recall something when suddenly a bright flash appeared between them. Frederick's eyes widened as he saw his former lover in full armor in front of him. "A-Athena," he said in surprise. The air around them suddenly became tense as if two bombs were about to go off.
"Hello Frederick," she said giving him a piercing look that told him to not speak anymore. Frederick gulped as Athena glared at the man who stared back at her. There was tension in the air and Frederick was more than glad that his family was out of the house. "This man is the father of one of my children," she said firmly. "What business do you have here?"
The man raised his hands up in peace, "Hey I just came here to talk. I wanted to know about my son who he is the guardian of," he said trying to sound as peaceful as possible. "I am not here looking for a fight."
Frederick felt his legs shake as he felt the tension between the two deities. He had no idea what was going on but he knew that it was something he wanted no part in. Athena stared at the man and the man defiantly stared back at her. "Well as you can tell your son is not here," Athena said smoothly.
"I can tell," the man said calmly. "I was just wondering if I could know where he is."
"I thought your kind don't care for your mortal children?" Athena said smoothly though he swore he heard a bit of derision in her voice.
The man sighed, "Yeah but something came up and I want to get to know him more."
Frederick wanted to talk and say something but every time he tried to open his mouth Athena would shoot him a look that basically told him to not talk. Well it is better to not talk than get into a fight between two gods he thought as he watched the two deities stare at each other, this was something he wanted no part of.
He suddenly heard the sound of two birds in the air. He looked up and saw two ravens circle above the man who swore in some unknown language when he saw them. "Look just send my regards to Magnus, I don't want a fight," The man said looking at him directly. Frederick only nodded as the mand smiled and disappeared.
When the man left he looked at Athena, "Who was he?" He asked softly.
Athena looked at him with her unnerving eyes and sighed, "Frederick there are things that I cannot speak of. That man is one of them; you can tell your nephew his father came by but keep it away from my daughter. If things get out of hand she and your family will probably be the first to face harm," she said seriously. Frederick nodded, he wanted to ask why but he knew by her gaze that he should not question what she was saying.
Athena gave him a light smile. "Stay safe Frederick, I will watch over you and your family in case anything else happens."
"Thank you," he said as Athena disappeared in front of him.
Magnus was having a blast at Percy's place. The two had gone skateboarding in the morning and then got some ice cream. Magnus never had thought that he could have so much fun outside of camp. "Hey Percy this was really fun thanks for having me over again," he said as they returned to his apartment.
"No problem dude you weren't bad today. You only fell off of the board a few times," Percy said as he unlocked the door to his apartment.
"Yeah I think I am getting used to it overall," he said with a smile. Skateboarding was pretty fun, even though he fell a few times and had a few bruises. Percy's apartment was empty since his mom was out studying with some of her friends from school so the two were left to their own devices. "So did you want to finish the Star Wars movies tonight?"
"Sure why not. I think we have some popcorn," Percy said with a smile. Magnus went to the kitchen with Percy and the two proceeded to get the snacks ready. "Hey Magnus can I ask you something?" Percy asked as he heated up the popcorn.
"Sure what is it?" He said as he grabbed two cans of coke from the fridge.
"What does Annabeth think of me?" Percy asked as he grabbed a bowl and some chocolates from a cabinet.
Magnus was taken by surprise by the question, "Um I think she sees you as a friend too why do you ask?"
"Oh nothing, I was just curious," Percy said as the microwave beeped. "I mean we got along well on that quest we did together yet she never wants to come and visit me here unlike you. I mean her school is not far from mine yet she doesn't even bother to visit," he said with a sigh. "I mean she can sometimes be nice but sometimes I feel that she doesn't care about me."
Magnus sighed, "Yeah I don't know dude. She is probably just catching up with Thalia, they were really close."
"Oh yeah that daughter of Zeus. Let me guess you don't get along with her either," Percy said with a smirk.
Magnus laughed, "Yeah she is very headstrong. She was kind of tough on me a bit when we were younger too so not really."
The two laughed as Percy got the popcorn ready, "Yeah she seems very what's the word I am looking for."
"Cocky and headstrong?" He suggested as he helped Percy bring the food into the living room.
"Yeah that," Percy said as he cleared the table. "Something about her I just don't like; I can't explain it. The few times I interacted with her always rubbed me the wrong way."
"Maybe its because your dad and her dad are rivals?" Magnus suggested as he sat down next to Percy on the couch.
"Yeah maybe," Percy said with a sigh as he looked at the clock. "Oh so are you and Annabeth really moving to San Francisco?"
He sighed, "We aren't sure. My uncle, Annabeth's dad moved there. Annabeth is confused about it and is kind of upset that he moved across the country." Well we have a few months to make a decision but I can tell that she is conflicted and not happy that he moved across the country." He knew that Annabeth kind of saw it as her dad moving to start a new life even though he told them right away after he got that assignment.
"Well it would be cool if you both stayed and we could all hang out and stuff," Percy said.
"Yeah I know me too but I honestly do not know if she wants to stay or go," he said with a sigh. To be honest I think she honestly does not know if she wants to move to a new house. "But if I end up staying maybe we can go to the same school this time," he said with a smile.
Percy laughed, "Yeah man that would be cool, though I have been kicked out of a lot of them." They both laughed before Percy spoke up again, "Oh yeah Magnus do you still have those wolf dreams?"
Magnus sighed; he had confided with Percy about his wolf dreams. It was sort of their little secret since he didn't want to tell Annabeth for fear that she might worry about him. "Yeah sometimes though not as much."
Percy nodded, "I wonder what they could mean and why did Chiron doesn't want you to talk about them."
"I don't know man but they have been changing slightly," Magnus said as he looked out of the window into the dark sky.
"Really how so?" Percy asked.
Magnus turned and looked at his friend. "Well lately I've been seeing this weird stone tower in my dream and a voice saying that if I want power to go to it, but I don't know where it is or what is in it."
Percy looked up as if he were thinking of something, "Hmm sounds weird but hey all demigods have weird dreams."
"True, but I can't help but feel as if it is something different," he said as he ate some popcorn.
"Well you know I will always be here to help you dude," Percy said with a smile.
"I know man thanks," Magnus said smiling at him. "Now lets watch some Star Wars." Percy nodded as he got up and started the movie. They watched the movie which lasted the whole night and they basically ate all of their snacks. Percy's mom still had not come home so after the movie Magnus helped Percy clean up and the two went to get ready for bed.
It was pretty late when the two decided to go to bed since they started talking about various demigod related things. "Good night Magnus," Percy said as he got into his bed. "Let me know if you need anything."
"Sure I will. Good night Percy," He said as he got into bed.
Magnus fell asleep right away and this time he had a dream about a stone tower. He was standing in front of the structure as he felt the cold wind around him. "What is this thing," he murmured as he looked up at it.
Hello traitor said a voice that sent chills down his spine. He looked around but saw no one. This thing was founded by our people the voice said in a sarcastic tone.
Magnus looked around, the voice appeared to be coming from everywhere and he could not pinpoint where it was coming from. Despite your beliefs if you need a bit of extra strength come here and obtain the weapon inside. If you are worthy of course, not everyone can wield the weapon inside.
"Who are you?" He asked as he looked at the structure.
The voice only laughed, "Only a mere jester looking for fun and toying with you and your friends will bring a lot of chaos," the voice said with a maniacal laugh.
Magnus yelled back but slowly felt himself wakeup from the dream. He woke up and realized it was still night, "Damn what was that," he said as he rubbed his head and forced himself to go back to sleep.
The next morning while he got up and got ready for the day he noticed something on Percy's windowsill. "That's odd," he said as he went over and opened the window. It was a piece of paper and it had his name on it.
He unfolded the paper and read the message quickly. If you want to know more about your father and if you are in need of extra strength go to this place in Rhode Island.
Magnus felt his eyes widen and his hand grab the paper tightly as read the message over and over. How did this get here? A hundred different thoughts raced through his head as he reread the letter and the address provided. He looked out the window and found nothing. No one could have just placed it there.
"Hey Magnus are you ready for breakfast? Percy asked.
Magnus turned to him and sighed, "Yeah I'll be right there?"
"Did something happen? Percy asked trying not to sound concerned.
Magnus looked at the paper and back at Percy, "I found this message for me on your windowsill," he said as he showed it to Percy.
Percy read the letter and looked back up at him. "Do you know what it means?"
Magnus sighed, "Not really lets talk about this when your mom isn't here." Percy nodded and the two went to eat breakfast.
Magnus helped Percy and his mom make breakfast, which was blue pancakes and fruit (he didn't care for the blue but he was polite and said nothing, they were good though). After breakfast, he and Percy cleaned up while his mom went to school and after they both got ready for the day they returned back to the letter addressed to him.
"So how do you think this got onto my window?" Percy asked as he read the letter.
Magnus nodded and sighed, "No clue man, I have no idea what it means."
Percy sighed as he looked up at him with his eyes. "Do you think it has something to do with those dreams of yours?"
"Maybe, I mean I have been seeing a stone tower in them. But I don't know what this weapon supposedly is," he said with a sigh as he looked at Percy. "Personally I don't trust the letter."
"Yeah me either but who knows it may come in handy," Percy said as he handed him back the letter. Magnus put the letter back in his suitcase without a second thought. "So did you want to go to the beach today?" Percy asked him.
"I didn't bring any swim clothes," Magnus said looking at Percy who was smiling at him.
"Oh don't worry I can make it so none of us get wet," Percy said with a smile on his face. "Have you ever seen the bottom of the ocean before?" Magnus shook his head, intrigued at the prospect. "Well then I got to show you man," Percy said as he got up and got his shoes on.
Magnus smiled at him and got up, "That does sound fun." Percy grinned at him as the two got ready and left Percy's apartment.
The two walked to the pier and chatted about various things. When they got to the pier the smell of the seawater hit his nose as he smelled the saltwater in the air. "Looks like nobody is around are you ready Magnus?" Percy asked as he got onto the edge and extended his arm with a bright smile on his face.
"Yeah I am dude," he said as he looked around to double-check that they were alone. For a second he thought he saw a person watching him from behind a building, it was only for a minute but he thought he saw a skinny person with silver hair watching him but disappeared quickly. He shook his head dismissing it as nothing or just a curious homeless person. He took Percy's hand and stared at the water.
"On three," Percy said as they looked at the water. "One, Two, Three!" With that, he and Percy jumped into the water together and Magnus couldn't have helped but enjoy the sensation of jumping into the water only for him to be covered in an air bubble.
Odin read the report to the other Gods of the Norse pantheon as they watched the video of Magnus Chase jump into the water with his Greek friend. "So he is with the Greeks; this makes things more complicated," Thor said with a sigh.
"True, the Greeks have a prophecy about a child of their big three. Not to mention Poseidon is very protective of his son. If something were to happen to the son of Poseidon while we tried to get close to young Magnus it would probably mean war at least on the seas," Njord warned.
Odin sighed as he rubbed his head, "That is true I will advise Gunilla to exercise caution and to not harm any Greek demigod, we cannot risk an inter pantheon incident." Thor nodded in agreement.
"Good now then Frey come forward," he said seriously. The golden-haired god approached and did a small bow avoiding his gaze.
"What the hell were you thinking? Approaching the spouse of an Olympian?" Odin said in a stern tone. "That bit of theater you did could have sparked a conflict if things were tense between Asgard and Olympus."
"I know Lord Odin forgive me, I just wanted to know about my son. I learned he adopted him so I went to see him. I did not expect the Goddess Athena to come," Frey said nervously sounding as apologetic as possible.
"Olympians like us take a lot of mortal spouses and they are just as territorial with them as we are with ours. Even if the Goddess Athena no longer had a relationship with that man she still sees him as special. When you noticed her presence you should have left right away," Odin chided.
"Forgive me Lord Odin," Frey said with a bow. "It will not happen again."
"It better not, it appears that Athena has not disclosed what had happened with her father so we are good for now. But we must all work carefully on this we must not allow our passions to overrule our judgment. We are in a sticky situation as it is with young Magnus Chase," Odin said with a sigh.
"I understand Lord Odin," Frey said. Odin nodded and Frey sat back down.
"I have looked up your son Magnus's name. We keep a list of our children who can become Einherjar, your son's name is blacked out. It means he has been claimed by the Greek pantheon," Odin said. There was a fury of whispers as a dark expression spread across Frey's face. "Silence! There are many reasons why this could have occurred, it is possible that an Olympian has claimed him as a part of his territory, if so we must act with caution approaching Olympus." Frey only nodded in his seat as he looked at the floor. If we just demanded the son of Frey from Olympians now of all times they would just see it as a power move we have to play this well.
"Oh father about the note that was left on the window of the Greek's apartment. Why did you allow it to be placed there?" Thor asked curiously.
Odin sighed, "I saw no harm in the note and besides if Magnus is really one of us deep down then he will have no trouble retrieving that weapon."
"But if he does take it we will be giving the Greeks one of our major weapons from one of our greatest heroes," Thor protested. "That sword belongs to our pantheon's greatest heroes to allow his sword to fall into Greek hands is an insult," there were murmurs of agreement in the crowd.
Odin looked at his son and sighed, "Thor I have my reasons for what I do. I would have not allowed the message to go through if I didn't believe it would be of use to us."
Thor sighed and sat back down as Odin looked up at the ceiling. "This meeting is done; I will alert you all if there are any updates. Remember we must act cautiously." With that, the meeting was over and Odin left as the other Gods talked about the recent events.
AN:
To the comments by the guest reviewer. I just assumed Frey would be busy with other things and didn't realize right away that Natalie was dead. Also yeah it was obvious that it was the Greek pantheon but seeing how the Greeks are in the middle of a crisis Odin just wanted to have all the facts first. Also, in my opinion, the Asgardians could have thought it was some trick by Loki and they did not want to jump to conclusions. Also, Magnus doesn't' have living siblings, I just put that to differentiate from any of his dead siblings that might already be in Valhalla. Frey will help Magnus a bit here and there
Yeah and for the thing about Annabeth and her feeling a bit miffed at Percy hanging with Magnus. Percy and Magnus just have a friendly relationship like camaraderie i don't plan on shipping them together. Percy and Magnus will have a strong bromance but I don't think I will ship them together. I still have planned for Percabeth in the end though i will say that Annabeth will be feeling a bit jealous of their friendship in the future and Percy will deal with crushing on his friend's cousin. Sorry but romance isn't my strength but i'll try my best.
Also, I don't plan for fierrochase in this story, at least not yet. I have been toying with ideas on incorporating Alex into the story but nothing concrete yet. This story will only cover the PJO series only, I may write a sequel that would cover HoO but this story will definitely be only up to PJO
Overall I may just focus on Magnus's relationships with Annabeth, his family, and Percy and leave him single.
