Chapter 10
Cara walked around the graveyard by herself for now. Spike was on his way catching up to her. Buffy didn't stay too long making it a short visit. Cara hoped she would come back and maybe she could try to get to know her a little more. "I heard what happened with Spike, you're his mate now right?" Cara heard a vampire behind her.
"Does everyone know?" She asked him.
"The chick with the dark hair has told everyone, thats considered disgraceful in the rule books." Cara punched him for that not caring. He tried to swing at her and she was able to stake him turning him to dust.
"You have got to be kidding me," Cara said annoyed. Spike came up to her seeing her standing there.
"What?" He noticed the annoyed look.
"Your crazy ex is telling other vampires what you did, you know the whole having a mate thing. Now the guy I just talked to before I killed him said it was disgraceful. It's just like high school you get one person talking shit about you in the vampire world," She sighed.
"You think I give a damn what they think? I don't play by the rules love, I never have. I can't help with who I fall in love with. If they disgrace me than let them because I don't care."
"Just telling you what I heard," she shrugged. Spike took her hand in his pulling her close to him.
"I'm in love with you that's all that matters, the hell with what they think." His hand touched her cheek as he leaned in kissing her lips. This lasted a brief moment until they sensed another vampire watching them.
"Don't you ever fight anymore?" Cara turned around asked them.
She kicked him going after them, he tried blocking her and missed giving her a chance to stake him. Spike took her hand leading her away from the graveyard. They would meet up with Angel to try to track down this other guy. He directed him to go to some old run down bar he had heard about. There were rumors that he went to this bar killing a couple of people.
Cara walked in with Spike behind her and a whole group of men looked direction at them. She had him walk in front of her watching her back. A man had reached down grabbing her butt, Cara turned around grabbing his arm twisting it throwing him on the ground. Spike turned around seeing what happened. "Was that necessary?" She asked him annoyed.
The guy just laid there laughing at her not caring. That alone was enough for her to pick him up and throw him against the wall. The other's stared nearly stunned that she had that kind of strength. "Who's next?"
They quickly turned around not wanting to deal being thrown. Spike took her hand leading her off to the side away from everyone at a table. "What was that all about?" He asked her.
"The guy grabbed my ass," she said annoyed. Angel arrived seeing them sitting off to the side. "I talked to the bartender and he made his home here somewhere." Angel explained.
The bartender lead them through the door to the back. There was a pathway going underground somewhere. "He sleeps down here," he explained.
"Doesn't look like he's here," Spike looked down there.
"He's gone, he leaves in the early evening. I leave him alone, he leaves me alone."
Cara saw some sort of small necklace on the ground picking it up. It looked like a small amulet of some sort. Cara handed it to Angel having him hold on to it. He would have Wes examine it to figure out what it meant. The room was large and the guy left them to look around. She saw a circle drawn on the ground with some sort of markings on it. There was another opening leading to the ground. She lifted the door leading to stairs going down below.
"Guys," she called them over to her. Cara pointed to the stairs leading below the ground. "Well I guess I'll be the guinea pig to go first," she said walking ahead of them. Spike followed behind her along with Angel. There were candles already lit below so they could see where they were going. It was some sort of an underground cave as they made it to the bottom of the steps.
The further they walked in, the more blood they came across. There was a large bed located in front of them with a dead shriveled up body in front of them. "Now we know where those bodies came from." Cara saw clothes on the ground believed to be hers.
"This is not even human," Angel said seeing what was in front of him.
"What happened to her?" Spike asked her.
"He took her here had sex with her and killed her. It's hard to tell with the body looking the way it looks but it's probably been here a couple of weeks." She explained.
"Looks like something out of a horror movie," Spike replied.
"You can literally see the bones through it," Angel got closer observing it.
"The body needs the extra fluids to slowly deteriorate but since it didn't have all those extra fluids it sped up the process."
They eventually got out of there just in case he would come back. They left the bar with no one bothering Cara this time. "I'll bring the books I got tomorrow," She looked at Angel.
"What are you going to tell the police?" Angel asked her.
"Not sure yet, I'll come up with something," Cara replied.
"They wouldn't believe her if she told them the truth mate," Spike looked at Angel.
"I know that." Cara walked quietly while they discussed the situation. The whole time it was about what this guy is and where he came from. It was interesting listening to their ideas on where they think he came from.
"Wait a second hold on a minute here guys." Cara raised her voice getting their attention. They finally stopped talking looking at her. "Before you guys get into this huge political debate here. There was a circle drawn on the floor while you were there which means he was resurrected. It had markings and candles with dust on them. Also, the way he was dressed was so way before your time, I mean who dresses like that in the eighteen-hundreds just saying," Cara explained letting them get back to their conversation.
They didn't seem to have much to say after that still talking a little. Angel had them go to the back of his building to go through some other books buried down in his drawer at his desk. Cara looked at the time seeing it was only eleven. To her, it felt like it was much later for some reason.
"No offense, but this book I'm reading about vampires is a little redundant," she said reading through it.
"I haven't read that one, Wes gave it to me." Angel answered her. They heard foot steps coming their direction. "Hey guys," Harmony peaked in.
"What are you doing here?" Angel asked her.
"I forgot something I had an awesome date," she started making conversation.
"My brother or did he turn you down?" Cara asked her.
"Good go bother him then," Spike looked at her briefly.
"Who's the new guy?" Angel asked her.
"Another vampire, tall, handsome, and hot" she explained.
"Right that explains a lot." Cara sighed at that.
"Well like Hamlet said for thy known self be true." Harmony said trying to quote that.
Cara couldn't help but laugh at that a little. "Hey by the way, love Shakespeare but Hamlet didnt say that the polonius guy did." Cara corrected her.
"I think I know Hamlet accurately, I read it." Harmony replied.
"Nope you don't." Cara said putting the books back not finding anything. Spike snickered a little hearing the girls talk.
"You guys go," Angel looked back at them.
"You sure?" Cara asked him.
"Get rest." Spike followed Cara out the door to her place. She unlocked the door opening it and Spike shut the door behind him.
"You know, Harmony isn't the smartest," Spike looked at her.
"I figured that out." She went into the closet grabbing the books on the ground carrying them out setting them on the chair. Cara went back to her bed lying down kicking her shoes off. Spike laid down beside her snuggling with her. She faced him lying there while he played with her hair. "I've never loved anyone as much as I love you," she said as she kept her eyes on him.
It was like he could feel her words while he held her. Hearing that made him want to just hold her forever not letting her go. Spike loved that she was so good to him reminding him how much she loved him.
"I wonder what it would have been like if I met you in your time." Cara looked at him.
"I would have had you meet my mother. Maybe courted you, steal a kiss or two. Asked you to marry me, my life would have been different," He explained.
"Is it any different now?"
"Besides being with you, not really. You're the only good thing going for me love. Sometimes I wonder how I even deserve you after all the things I've done and the hell I went through."
"Maybe it's because you became a better man. I know you didn't want to be lonely. They say if you want something bad enough it will come." He kissed the top of her head just holding her felt like he was in heaven. Nothing else could compared to how he was feeling at the moment.
Spike sat up a moment starting to feel some sort of pain within him. "Spike, Are you ok?" Cara asked worried.
A yellow type of light shot out of him going away causing him to pass out. Cara went over to him trying to wake him up. He opened his eyes sitting up feeling a little tired. He didnt feel his soul in him at the moment feeling like how he was before.
"It's gone." He said shocked.
"Clearly, it's not gone. You just got a spell to turn it off like a light switch. Spells make you think it's gone," Cara explained.
"Meaning?"
"Meaning, it's just a spell to make you like you were before you had a soul. According to Angel, you were a little more vulnerable to violence or kicking someone's ass," She explained.
"Maybe now I am," he said getting up.
"There's not much we can do about it now so cool it." Spike looked at her feeling a little more vulnerable but knew he wouldn't hurt her. He seemed careless with everything else except for her. Cara wasn't sure what to do so she called Angel. "Hey did I wake you up?"
"No what's going on?"
"Spike's soul kinda went away with him. It's there but a spell turned it off making him like he was before. I'm thinking maybe Dru could have done it," Cara said guessing.
Spike took the phone from her hanging it up. "I'm fine, love." He came up to her.
"Fine to what kick my ass?" Cara asked annoyed.
Cara kept backing away and he cornered her backing her into a wall. His lips met hers kissing her deeply, she pulled back to look at him. "You aren't giving me much credit are you darling?"
"As tired as I am right now, I could care less," she said leaving him stand there taking her phone going to the bathroom.
Cara called back Angel letting him know she would be find dealing with him for the night. She had a feeling he may be like this for a while.
The next morning, Spike was lying next to her asleep. Cara managed to get up, get herself together, and dressed without waking him up. She pulled her hair back in a ponytail and did her make up. Cara opened the door fully dressed and Spike stood there blocking her way. "Morning love," he looked at her.
"Kiss me?" He asked her. She leaned in kissing him a moment only to pull away from him.
"What are you afraid of?" Spike questioned her.
"You loosing it going into a rampage killing spree," she answered him.
Spike kind of snickered at that. "I have no reason to hurt you, I don't hurt the ones I love pet," Spike approached her taking her hand in his letting her know she could trust him. Cara approached him leaning in kissing his lips. This lasted a moment until he pulled back to look at her. His feelings for her were still the same as they were before. He was relieved that they didn't leave them.
Both of them left heading to Angel's office taking their usual entrance. Spike held her hand going into Angel's office. "You ok?" Angel asked Cara.
"I'm fine, you know what makes Spike so unique is even without a soul, he can still show some sort of emotion. He made a choice to do what's right. My theory is some of his human traits stayed with him." She explained.
"You are a genius," Spike looked at her.
"Nah, it's only a guess or theory."
"That doesn't stop you from being a genius love." Spike kissed her cheek.
"Can you watch him?" Angel asked Cara.
"What?" Spike looked Angel annoyed.
"I don't think you can rationalize and I don't trust you around people right now," Angel assured him.
Spike looked irritated with him, so before he could get a word out, Cara stood up for him "Angel, he can rationalize. It's obvious that you can't take away something that is permanent. You can use a spell that makes you think you don't have something making it stop working temporarily." Cara explained.
"How so?"
"I can feel it, him and I have a connection with each other. As strange as it sounds, I can feel things I haven't been able to feel before. I guess it's the whole finding the one sort of thing." She explained.
Angel could only trust her judgement but still felt a little weary of Spike. "I trust you, not only as an employee but in general." He said nicely. Spike stood there listening to them talk between each other.
"I appreciate that but don't be so quick to shove Spike with a babysitter. He can take care of himself." Her tone was calm but thorough towards him.
Angel sighed at that. "Fine."
Cara lead Spike out of Angel's office to the lab with her hoping she could come up with a solution to help out Spike. "Thank you, no one has stood up for me before," Spike said appreciating that.
"Dru hasn't even taken up for me before." Spike said walked with her.
"Then she's an idiot." Cara said leading him inside. The lab was quiet with no one present at the moment.
Spike stopped her taking her hand in his. "What?"
"You have done so much for me, if there is anything I can do for you love," he said kissing her hand.
"Don't feel obligated, I don't need anything." He pulled her in a hug thankful for her. Spike was aware of how love could either make you happy or screw you over. In this case, love was on his side. She had shown him without even realizing herself what love was. Anything she had done for him meant everything to him. After all the heartbreak he went through, Spike would take everything she did for him to heart.
Cara pulled back to look at him rubbing her hand along the side of his face. Cara grabbed a book skimming through it reading up on spells. "I don't even know why we have spells, there's always risks involved. We should take every spell and lock them away in a vault never to come out," Cara said annoyed with them.
"I agree there is always risks, people tend to be oblivious pet." He replied.
Seeing they were still alone in the room, Spike wrapped his arms around her waist holding her while she was still skimming through the book. He stole a kiss while he held her.
Cara finally found the page she was looking for reading up on it. "You know if people would read stuff, they would know what the hell they were doing. No where does it say this is permanent, if it wasn't a spell then there would be no solution to fix it.
"I can definitely do this for you much quicker than I thought. It makes me one step ahead of them. They think they took your soul, they are full of crap. Cara said looking at the words to read.
"Is there a chance that it can start working on it's own?" Spike asked her.
"Maybe but this is the quicker way." Cara started reading the words and he stopped her.
"I can feel it, it seems to overpower whatever they tried to do to me." Cara looked into his eyes seeing them change to orange for a split second then went back to normal.
"Apparently, nothing over powers something permanent I guess, looks like you have been restored." They leaned in kissing one another, this lasted a while until they heard a door open pulling away from each other.
"Looks like Spike is back to normal." Angel said coming in.
"He's good, somehow it was able to restore itself." Cara explained.
