Chapter 8
George Anderson was highly pissed off. He got those test results while he and Laura were searching the other files. He shared the test results with her and she literally threw a glass of water at the wall. He didn't blame her. He'd be rightly pissed if this was Ginny or his son in this predicament. Now that the dust had settled, he dropped Laura off at her home and headed to the hospital. Those kids were going to hear this from him. He put on his lab coat. Callie was in the MICU! He didn't get to venture there often. Her door was closed and he opened it. "Hello Callie."
Callie's eyes widened. "Dr. Anderson! Why are you here?" Her voice had improved through the night.
Dr. Anderson narrowed his eyes. Her cheeks were bruised and her neck. George felt a fury that he rarely felt. He ran across abusers from time to time in his profession but this was smack in the face. "Frank, thank you for being here for her. She's lucky to have you."
"I'm not going anywhere."
That eased George's mind a little. "I'm glad to hear that. Callie two weeks ago you came in for a depo provera shot. Remember honey?"
"Yes, Linda gave it to me."
"She gave you an injection, not the depo."
"What? What did I get?"
"A novarel." George answered.
Frank narrowed his eyes. "Are the bottles similar in shape and color?"
"No." George said. "The labels and phials are very different. I can't imagine it being an accident. Our fertility specialists are the ones who handle the Novarel."
Callie shrieked. "Fertility specialists!"
Frank soothed her. "Callie honey don't yell. Your voice box."
"Fuck my voice box! Am I pregnant?"
Frank felt his heart drop like a stone in his chest. 'Had to be a trick question.' Then he saw Dr. Anderson's face. "She is?"
"Yes we detected HcG levels in her blood consistent with a pregnancy at two weeks."
Callie burst into tears. Frank pulled the bedrail down and pulled her into his arms.
Two days later, Callie was able to come home from the hospital. His parents picked them up. It was Tuesday, they had found out that Robert Shaw had been released on bond the day before. The dinner they had seen on the news had gone off without a hitch. Frank helped Callie out of the car, wrapped an arm around her waist, then walked her towards the door. When they entered Joe and Vanessa were there. Joe said, "I got both of your assignments from yesterday and today. The teachers said to turn it in by Monday."
Callie smiled. "Thanks Joe. We'll start working on it shortly. I need a shower."
Vanessa nodded. "Mr. and Mrs. Hardy went to the house to get some things for you two days ago."
"That's good. Thanks."
Frank took her upstairs. He turned on the light to Aunt Gertrude's old room. It featured a queen bed, one dresser and mirror, two night stands, a large closet, and had its own bathroom. Callie smiled at the handmade quilt on the bed and matching pillow shams. "This is a nice quilt set, well made."
"Aunt Gertrude loves quilting, she moved to Florida and is dating a guy she met playing bingo."
Callie smiled. "Good for her. I'm glad she's happy. Did your dad run him?"
"You know he did. He has his own money, nothing shady except a minor drug arrest in college."
"Frank, I was so scared. I hit the button while he was strangling me. I thought he was going to kill me." She started to cry.
Frank pulled her into his arms. "I know Babe. You're safe now."
Fenton Hardy knocked on the door frame, the door was open and he overheard the end of the conversation. Both teens turned. Callie straightened up. "Sorry Mr. Hardy."
Fenton tilted his head. "You have nothing to apologize for. You've had a rough few days. Losing your mother, your father doing what he did. We all understand. After you two clean up, Laura and I would like to talk with you."
Frank had been dreading this, but knew there was no way around it. "No problem."
Callie shut the door and went to her bags to find her toiletries and something to wear. She found her shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, hair dryer, straightening iron, her makeup, a pair of jeans, a pair of white socks, and a dark green cashmere sweater. She also grabbed her makeup bag. She quickly showered. She had to dry and straighten her hair which would take thirty minutes. She put on some lip gloss. Her face was too tender for anything else. She put on her clothes and hurried down stairs. Fenton and Frank were sitting at the table. Laura was placing a platter of cheese, grapes, and crackers on the table. Callie asked. "Do you need a hand with anything Mrs. Hardy?"
"No dear, I'm just going to put some iced tea on the table. Decaf."
Callie sat next to Frank, Fenton was on her other side. Laura sat across from her, one chair was vacant beside her. Callie decided to start. "May I say something first."
Fenton nodded. "Of course."
"I know you guys are disappointed. I'm sorry I thought I was protected. I had no reason to think otherwise and that pisses me off. I feel betrayed by a woman that my mother trusted and loved like a sister. I know my dad told her to do it. That they want access to the trust that was left to me. I'm...so angry."
Laura nodded. "Sweetie, first we know you were both being responsible, this is a deep betrayal and you have a right to your feelings. I can't speak for Fenton on his feelings but I'll tell you both mine. I'm proud of both of you and we love you. Callie you've dealt with all this with such grace and poise. Most would clutch or give up but you haven't. Frank you've been there for her every turn during this awful time for her. Doing what she needed putting her needs before yours. That's why I'm so proud of both of you."
Fenton smiled. "I concur with everything your mother said and will add this. You and Callie have been together for a long time, since middle school really. I coached your little league team and I've seen first hand how your relationship has changed over the years. What you have is rare and special."
Frank swallowed. He couldn't speak for a couple minutes because of his emotions. "I love her dad with every beat of my heart and she knows it. I'm feeling a little...I'm not sure how I feel. I mean I knew we'd one day have a family. But I figured after college not right after highschool. She's going to be due in late July."
Laura soothed. "Yes, that is true. You do have options though if you want to talk about them and consider them."
Callie spoke. "I appreciate that Laura, but Frank and I talked at the hospital about our options. I don't want an abortion, and I'm not putting the baby up for adoption when I have a four billion dollar trust."
Frank nodded. "I've decided to start MIT in January. I already contacted the school they were okay with that. I get to keep my scholarship. I'll attend the summer session to make up for the fall. Callie is going to attend Harvard in January, she'll also attend the summer session. We will be two and a half hours from Bayport so if we need anything it's close."
Fenton coughed to hide his smirk. 'Yes he bet both schools were very accommodating for these two for various reasons. Frank was brilliant and an electronics wiz; and Callie not only was she very smart but she was rich.' He nodded. "Well then, I'm glad you guys had a chance to talk and arrange all that. We'll support you no matter what."
"I get to go to school tomorrow with all these bruises." Callie said glumly.
Frank squeezed her hand. "Anyone looks at you cockeyed, it will be a race between me and Joe setting them straight."
Callie laughed. "I guess so."
Joe came into the kitchen. "Hey mom can I make a sandwich?"
Laura laughed. "Make yourself a plate from the platter dear."
Joe stopped. He saw both parents and Frank and Callie at the table. The food was hearty and healthy. "What's going on?"
Frank took a deep breath. "Sit down Joe."
Joe sat and plopped a piece of cubed cheddar in his mouth. "What's up?"
Callie said. "You know about Linda Reed being involved with my dad right?"
"Uh huh. So what did Linda do?"
Frank cleared his throat. "Callie went to Dr. Anderson's office where she saw Linda two weeks and three days ago. She was supposed to give her a depo shot but instead gave her a shot that made her ovulate."
Joe choked on his soda. "Whoa! On accident or on purpose?"
Fenton said. "It was on purpose, they want access to Callie's trust. So they figured if they could force Callie to give birth to a baby, they would get custody of the child."
"Like you and Callie are going to allow that."
Callie ate a red grape. "Well, my dad never wanted me anyway. Chances are they were going to kill me or force me to disappear. Given my dad's recent behavior." She pointed to her neck and continued. "I'm betting on killing me."
Frank and Fenton hissed. "Over my dead body."
Everyone at the table chuckled. Callie ate another grape. "Wow these are good."
Laura Hardy went over to the pharmacy bag on the counter and pulled out a large bottle. Frank read the label. 'Flintstones vitamins.' Laura handed the bottle to Callie. "Take two of these every morning. Prenatal vitamins are brutal on the stomach."
Callie grinned. "Thanks."
