Ghosts Of Days Gone By
Total Eclipse Of The Heart
Adam arrived at the Performance Center in anticipation of his match with Randy. Their match was being pre-taped. Prior to the taping, the two opponents had been discussing how to put on the best match possible. It was going to be a physical bout and he was prepared for it.
Like Summer told him: he needed to show Vincent Kennedy McMahon that he was as every bit as good as he was ten years ago.
Speaking of Summer: she was standing with Randy, laughing at something he had said. It was crazy to think that Randy and Summer remained great friends even after they broke up. She even remained on friendly terms with Punk although Punk had broken off their relationship and he was not on good terms with WWE. Summer had despised Adam after he called off their relationship and with good reason.
Summer walked away from Randy because she had business to tend to before Backlash started. She saw Adam with his luggage in tow. "Hey, Adam."
"Hey, Summer."
"I like the mask." Summer was referring to his Nightmare Before Christmas mask he was wearing.
"You know it's definitely 2020 when you compliment someone's mask," Adam kidded.
Summer giggled. "For real."
"Your mask goes perfectly with your outfit." Summer was wearing a pink skirt business suit with a white bodysuit underneath paired with white stiletto pumps. Her mask was the same color as her suit.
"Thanks," Summer laughed. "Are you ready for tonight?"
"If I'm being honest: I am super nervous."
"You're nervous? What's wrong?"
"What if something goes wrong in the match?" Adam wondered. "Or what if people think the match sucks? I don't want people to watch this and think I don't have what it takes anymore."
Summer placed a hand on his forearm. "You and Randy are going to put on an instant classic. Everything is going to be fine." She unknowingly was stroking his arm, which is a tactic she uses to console people. Even though it was inadvertent, she didn't find it appropriate considering their history.
Adam got chills from Summer stroking his forearm. He definitely felt assured. "You're right. Everything is going to be fine."
Summer watched in the production area as Edge and Randy fought for forty-five minutes. The match was physical, but she expected nothing less from two of the all time greats.
She clapped excitedly whenever Randy came through the curtain. "That was a great performance! I got goosebumps." She and Randy shared a high-five before the Apex Predator disappeared down the hallway.
Adam came through the curtain next. His face was contorted in pain and he was holding onto his left triceps. Summer went into panic mode. There was no way Adam could be injured… "Adam, are you okay?"
Adam didn't say anything. He scooted past everyone and went to the trainer's room without a word. Summer immediately followed suit. Adam walked into the trainer's room, Summer entering right behind him.
He sat down on the exam bed, holding onto his triceps. He inwardly groaned at any movement he made.
"Adam, are you okay?" Summer repeated.
"Does it look like I'm okay?"
Summer frowned. "No."
"Okay, so why would you ask me that?"
"I'm just concerned about you."
"I don't need any of your sympathy."
"Why are you acting like a jerk? What did I do?"
"You said everything would be just fine!" Adam exclaimed. "I tore my triceps. So everything is not fine!"
"Adam…I'm sorry."
"I don't want your apology," Adam spat. "I just want you to leave me alone."
"Adam, I know you're angry over your injury but there's no reason to take it out on me," Summer argued.
"Summer, get out. I don't have time for this right now."
"Adam…"
The Rated R Superstar stood up and got in the face of Summer. "I said get out! Get the hell out! You're the last person I ever want to see again!"
Summer was taken aback by Adam's actions. A chill went down her spine at his sudden hostility. She stepped back so they wouldn't be so close in proximity to each other. She got ready to leave, but she gave him one last look before exiting, tears pricking her eyes.
Adam sighed, sitting back down on the exam bed. He was too angry about his injury to control his emotions. He knew that once he calmed down, he would owe Summer a ginormous apology. He had no right to yell at her the way he did. He just hoped she would hear him out when that time came.
Flashback
It was April fifth, so the Smackdown superstars were taping for the April 8, 2011 episode of Smackdown. Christian versus Alberto Del Rio main evented the show to see who would wrestle Edge in a ladder match at Extreme Rules. Edge was sitting commentary, but he speared Brodus Clay when he interfered in the match on behalf of Alberto.
Unfortunately for The Rated R Superstar, he aggravated an old neck injury when spearing Brodus. He felt something pop in neck, so he couldn't help but clutch at his neck afterwards. He came through the curtain accompanied by Jay and the referee.
Summer was standing in the gorilla, panic etched on her face. She was aware that Adam had been having numbness in his arms, but he managed to pass all his strength tests prior to Wrestlemania and he was told he could wrestle until his contract expired next year if he felt like he could.
"Summer, we're taking him to the trainer's room," Jay said.
Summer nodded and followed them to the trainer's room. She scooted past them so she could open the door. She held the door open as Jay and the referee escorted Adam into the trainer's room. They gingerly help Adam onto the exam bed as Summer shuts the door. She goes to stand beside Jay, her arms crossed.
"What happened?" The trainer asked.
"I speared Brodus and when I did: I felt a pop in my neck," Adam responded. "It feels exactly like when I injured my neck nine years ago."
"I'm going to give you a steroid to help with the pain and I'm going to send a referral for you to an x-ray done on your neck. I would recommend you resting and taking it easy. You don't want to bother your neck even more."
"Adam, I can leave early so I can drive you to the motel."
"Baby, you still have stuff to do before you can leave."
"But, you're more important than whatever else I need to do."
"Summer," Jay intervened. "I'll drive Adam back to the motel and keep him an eye on him until you get there."
"You sure?"
"I'm sure," Captain Charisma nodded. "Finish up what you need to do."
"Thank you so much!" She wrapped her arms around Jay's neck. "You're the best."
"It's really not a problem."
Adam stood up and looked directly at Summer. "Be careful. I'll see you at the motel." His neck was aching, so he couldn't bend down to kiss Summer like he badly wanted to.
"I love you."
"Love you too, Baby." With that said, Adam followed Jay out of the trainer's room and to the dressing room area so they could grab their belongings. Summer had went the opposite way so she could finish up what she needed to in the production area.
Later on that night, Adam was talking to Jay on the phone. The Rated R Superstar was venting to Captain Charisma about everything that transpired throughout the day through his eyes. Yes, he wrestled his first straight up singles match after nine years, but he got injured so that put a huge damper on things.
"I fussed at Summer."
"Why? Did she do something to piss you off?"
Adam sighed. "No. I was just so angry about my injury and she was the first person that approached me, so she got the brunt of my anger."
"You're going to have to apologize to her."
"I know, but I don't think she'll hear me out. I was really mean to her."
"You need to explain to her what happened. I'm sure she'll understand."
"She looked absolutely petrified when I yelled at her. It probably didn't help that I got right up in her face."
"Adam, it sounds like you've landed yourself in some hot water."
"I was an asshole to her. We were starting to become friends again, but all that has gone up in smoke."
"Let me ask you something: why do you care about Summer all of a sudden?" Jay inquired.
"Jay, I never stopped caring about Summer. That's the problem."
Summer sat in her motel room, sobbing over the events that happened. Between Adam getting injured and him fussing at her, it definitely wasn't the best day she had. She was sure that Vince was going to rip her a new one since a talent got hurt under her supervision.
She was dreading Monday.
She grabbed some tissues and wiped at her face. Her phone went off and when she grabbed her phone, she noticed a Twitter DM from Adam. She disposed of her tissues and clicked onto the Twitter app. She went to her DMs.
EdgeRatedR: I'm so sorry about everything that went down today.
She decided to leave the message on read and exit out of the conversation. She didn't have anything to say to him especially after how he acted towards her. Yes, she understood that he was angry over his triceps injury, but she was only concerned. If that was how she was going to get treated for showing concern, she wanted no part of that.
It's amazing how once upon a time things were so great between them. Now, it was like she was staring at a ghost of a person she used to know. She thought they were becoming friends again at least, but she was clearly wrong.
If he wanted her to leave him alone, then she would happily oblige.
Going to his Twitter and Instagram pages…. She cliked on the button she never used before. BLOCK. While she was at it, she went ahead and blocked his wife too. Kill two birds with one stone.
They weren't even together anymore, but she couldn't help but feel the same heartache she felt eight years ago when he had ended their relationship.
