Chapter 8
1993
Happy age 42
Bramty age 8
Bramty just turned 8 years old and they had done their tradition from the past three years; he took her on a ride on his motorcycle, she paid for ice cream from the money she saved in the shoebox and then he took her to see a movie in the theatre.
Bramty didn't ask for gifts and when he'd suggested it - she told him she didn't want anything on her birthday. He didn't really get that though. As a kid he'd of taken a gift anytime anyone wanted to buy one for him but that wasn't Bramty. She specifically wanted nothing more than him to spend time with her on her birthday and he could respect that, made him love her a little more for it too.
He had come down for the day but had to go back to Tacoma straight away. That was a month ago and now its already time for Easter.
Happy was glad the club didn't celebrate and he could pawn it off as a Catholic thing he did to humour his sick Ma... which wasn't entirely wrong since he'd been doing it for years but now he just brought Bramty along with him.
"Hola Ma" Happy greeted his mother who was sitting on the couch for them when they walked in the door trying to look like she hadn't been watching them from the window since they pulled in the driveway.
"Hola Mijo!" She kissed his cheek, "Hola nieta!" she greeted Bramty the same way. Happy couldn't help but grin at seeing Ma interact with Bramty, he liked seeing his two favourite people get along.
"Abuela!" Bramty cheered before launching into a full blown play-for-play of the school dance she'd gone to on the last day of school before they gave the kids get a week off for Easter holidays. "...and he asked me to dance, 'n I said yes, 'n we danced like the whole time"
"Wait" Happy interrupted frowning, all she'd said to him was that the dance went good when they were talking on the phone. There was no mention of a boy or dancing with boys! "What's this about a boy?"
"Nothing for you to worry about, mijo" his Ma waved him off dismissively before ushering Bramty into the kitchen, "Did you get pictures, nieta?"
Happy shook his head frowning as he followed after them not letting his Ma wave him off again. This was information he needed to talk to Bramty about! "Wait, wait, wait... now what exactly happened at this dance?"
Bramty and his Ma both sighed loudly making him glare.
"Eziah was at the dance with his friends 'n his brother. His younger brother is in my class 'n so he joined my group of friends when we were dancing. Then he asked me if I wanted to dance with him after dinner 'n I said yes" Bramty rolled her eyes but was smiling and he didn't like that one bit!
"No" Happy shook his head firmly, "No boys, no dancing with boys, no more dances if there's boys there"
"Mijo" his mother chastised
"Nah, Ma... I don't like her near boys" he argued right back, no way was she gonna put her foot down on this one. His baby girl was not gonna have anything to do with boys until she's maybe 30. "We can re-visit this conversation when your 30" he nodded liking that idea very much.
"30!" Bramty squeaked with wide eyes and a slack jaw as if 30 was an outrages age to re-visit this talk.
"Yeah" he nodded happily, "30's not a bad age. I'm 42 and I don't got no bitch"
"Language mijo" Ma frowned at him
"You got plenty of bitches!" Bramty argued back jumping down from where his Ma had let her sit on the edge of the counter top. "You just don't want em forever! You got bitches!"
He sighed, she wasn't wrong and maybe using himself was a bad example for this but it didn't change his mind on 30. It gave him 22 years to not worry and even that was a compromise for him!
"Language!" Ma sighed pinching the bridge of her nose, she'd stand there all day reminding them about their language if she didn't ignore it. Cause Bramty was as bad at cussing as he was.
" 's not like i'm having sex! It's just dancing!" Bramty defended crossing her arms over her chest and glaring right back at him. While he knew that was a fair point he just didn't care.
"You don't need boys or dancing with them" he sighed, "Especially not this fucker! He's too old for you!"
"Eziah is only 2 years older than me!" Bramty said exasperatedly but that information wasn't helping her case any cause it meant he was 2 whole grades above her in school! "You're not being fair"
Happy huffed because he knew that but it didn't change how he felt on this. "Your too young for boys and boyfriends"
"He's not my boyfriend" she shot back at him, "It was nice getting asked to dance 'n you don't gotta bitch about it, Hap, it's done now." she rolled her eyes at him.
Begrudgingly he grumbled and went to sit down on the other side of the kitchen counter as his Ma rolled her eyes at him a little smugly. Happy glared back at her but his mother wasn't scared of him and it only made the woman more smug.
"Nieta come here. We have to colour the eggs" Ma spoke up ending Bramty and Happy's stare down. That girl would stand toe to toe with him without blinking and it was worse when she was the one in the right on shit.
"Si Abuela" Bramty smiled never one to hold a grudge or ruin a good mood. Happy just smiled watching them dip the eggs in coloured water to ink them so that they can place them in the bread rolls. "Easter bread is my favourite"
Happy grinned and nodded in agreement, it was damn good food and his favourite too.
His eyes narrowed when a whispered conversation went on between his Ma and Bramty before Bramty hopped off the counter and walked up to him getting up to sit on his lap. He knew they wanted something but he found it too funny to not make em work for it a little.
Bramty hugged him and kissed his cheek, "Hap? can we go get chocolate eggs while the bread is in the oven?"
He rolled his eyes, of course they wanted chocolate eggs. He knew he'd be going to get them already but instead he just shrugged, "Don't know" and kissed her forehead.
Bramty glanced at his Ma who was pretending to be focused on spreading butter on the bread, before turning back to him and kissing his cheek again. "Can we Hap? we can go for a ride on the motorcycle too?"
Happy continued like he didn't know he was being manipulated and raised a brow, "We rode for hours... you want to go on a ride again?"
Bramty nodded, "Yeah, to go get chocolate eggs Hap" she smiled and reminded him the reason she really wanted to go on the ride for.
"Ask Ma" he said kissing her forehead and she smiled before getting off his lap and going to 'ask' his Ma.
Happy just rolled his eyes, if they thought that worked then he wasn't gonna correct them. The last thing he needed was Bramty figuring out how to actually manipulate him. As long as his Ma was thinking Bramty could get him to cave on everything then he'd be fine.
Though Happy knew at some point one of them would figure it out... until then he would play along.
It was the day after Easter and Happy and Bramty were heading back to the hotel in Charming already. They still had 2 more days of her school holidays and his time off at the garage to spend together.
When they pulled into the hotel parking lot and he had a key heading up to the room to watch cartoons and pig out on the candy they'd stopped for on the way there.
Happy let them into the room when his phone went off. Sighing deeply he pulled it out of his kutte to answer it, "Hello?"
"Hap, need you here man... sorry" it was Jax
"Fuck!" he ran a hand over his face sitting on the edge of the bed where Bramty sat next to him. He knew she didn't know what was going on but she understood that when his phone rang it meant he had to go help the club.
Bramty had never minded before but he wasn't so sure it would be okay with her now. He had never been called in on a holiday before. Sure, their hangout days or breakfast and lunches had been cut short but never their holidays where he had a week off to give her a break from Katherine.
"I'm sorry brother, we need you for the day... might be able to head back up there tonight if it goes well" Jax sighed
Happy knew Jax was one of the guys more family orientated in nature and so the VP understood why these holidays were important. Even if the VP didn't understand the full extent of it with Bramty but he was still one of the more sympathetic ones at the club cause he's got family who aren't club. With his wife Tara and their two kids Jax get's the way things are different when your family members aren't like Gemma.
"Yeah, I'm in Charming, just got into town to get shit for Ma... I'll be there in 5 but I can't stay too late tonight, gotta be up there for the morning and then i'll be back around lunch" he told Jax knowing Bramty would be okay on her own for a little but he wasn't gonna leave her over night if he didn't have to.
"Sounds okay man, we'll try and get that done" Jax agreed
Happy hung up and turned to Bramty with a deep sigh, " 'M sorry baby girl"
Bramty kissed his cheek and wrapped her arms around his neck in a hug, "It's okay, Hap" she sounded like she was being honest and he nodded hugging her back and kissing her forehead.
"Do you want to stay here? I mean, I know this week gets you away from Katherine... I'll try and be back tonight but you can just hang out and watch cartoon's. I've got the leftover dinner from yesterday on the table" he suggested and she smiled brightly before nodding in agreement.
She'd be alone either way, he knew that she'd rather be alone here with something to do and food than be alone in her house with nothing and bored out of her mind.
Whenever they went up to his Ma's he always had her pack the phone he gave her which means worst case scenario he can just call her and let her know she'd be here on her own through the night. Although he didn't like that plan much it was still better than taking her to Katherine early.
For all they knew Katherine had plans since she wasn't expecting Bramty home until tomorrow night.

Happy nodded at Jax when he got to the clubhouse and they all walked into Church. Shit with the Russians had gone down and they were getting more guns at the exact same time they had a meeting with the Irish.
It wasn't an ideal situation but they were spread thin.
"Hap, where you going brother? we just need bodies, ain't no need for your skill set on either of these" Clay smirked and a few of his brothers laughed.
Happy smirked right along with them, "Yeah brother, I'll take the Russians; I don't trust those shady fuckers... always a need for my skill set" he joked earning loud laughter from the men at the table.
They knew how crazy the Russians were with thinking everyone was out to get them and if you were looking for a shoot out you'd have better luck with the Russians than the Irish. Still, it wasn't the reason he chose to go to the Russian meet.
The gun purchase was quicker, it was an exchange of money for guns and their men load into the van. Sure, it's got a risk of more going wrong then a friendly sit down with the Irish but it's still quicker if all goes to plan.
Happy sighed as they walked out of Church, he still had half an hour until he needed to be leaving for the meet with Jax, Chibs and Tig. It wasn't a good idea to skip out on them all now and so he'd have to wait at the bar.
"Hap, man" Tig came up behind him as the prospect set a beer in front of them and they watched the others all head off to meet the Irish. "Where you been brother?"
"Ma's for Easter" He grunted, aside from his president or VP using rank to get an answer out of him Tig was the only one here he considered a real friend. Tig and him got along great when he was here and the SAA was easier to talk to than other people.
"Yeah brother, How's Elena doing?" Tig asked
Happy shrugged, "Old as shit"
They both laughed before Tig turned to him and frowned, "Brother, you seem like you've got something else on your mind..." he trailed off with a shrug
Happy did have something else on his mind - his baby girl who's sitting in a hotel on her own waiting for him to get done with club shit so they can watch cartoon's together cause it's her only escape from her batshit crazy ass mom. He didn't say any of that though, no matter how much he wanted to, Happy kept his mouth shut.
While he trusted Tig with knowing about Bramty, hell he trusted the whole club! He knew telling them was creating a way for her to be connected with the Sons of Anarchy. A way of making her a target if someone wanted to hurt him or the club and with him being in Tacoma half the time he wouldn't be here to protect her from club shit he doesn't know about.
Their enemies wouldn't just forget about her cause he's in Tacoma at the moment... no, they'd go straight for her cause she's the one least protected.
"I'm thinking I need out of Tacoma" he said before he could stop himself. It was something he'd been thinking about for a while now but he had been earning more in Tacoma than he would be if he was in Charming. His Ma's medicine and living expenses on top of shit for Bramty was expensive. He had always known Normad was likely what he'd have to do when his Ma got worse but now with Bramty... well, Normad wasn't really an option anymore.
Tacoma have both Kozik and Lorca as enforcers and they'd be protected with out him. Especially since Lorca is a world of ruthless he doesn't even reach.
Only issue with moving to Charming is, he'd have to put in a lot of extra time at the garage to make the same amount of money. Though the possibility of introducing Bramty to everyone was a great benefit of that plan.
Maybe he'd even be able to figure out some legal was for him to take Bramty out of Katherine's care. To get custody of her or some shit? He could get a place here in Charming and then look into something like that, right?
Tig cleared his throat pulling Happy from his thoughts, "What?" Happy asked when Tig looked at him expectantly.
Tig sighed, "I asked why brother?"
Oh, Happy shrugged not sure what to say. "I like club shit here better" he told Tig and it wasn't a lie, club deals in SAMCRO were always more interesting and frequent here in Charming since it's the mother charter and all. "Be closer to Ma too" he added resisting the urge to add 'and Bramty' on the end of that.
"Want me to mention it to Clay? see where he's at with something like that first? I mean, I think he'd love you being here but, Y'know?" Tig offered and Happy nodded gratefully.
"LETS ROLL OUT!" Jax announced and they all got up following the VP out to the meeting.
Happy was thankful for the relatively long ride because it gave him the chance to clear his head and focus on the task at hand. He needed to concentrate or he'd get himself killed.
