Disclaimer: Nope. Still don't own Harry Potter.
For her it was absolute blind terror, and a happiness like she had never felt. Because they were going to have a baby. Well, she thought so anyways. She had been feeling sick and thrown it off as the flu but had opened the bathroom cupboard to look for some extra cold pills (James found muggles brilliant in this sense) and had stared for a long time at the pads she hadn't had to use in…damn. A couple of months.
Luckily Marly, she swallowed at the thought of her late friend. Marly had had a couple pregnancy scares so she knew how to make the potion by heart. She sent a concerned James to work, telling him she was fine, that she felt better already. And she did. The nausea was intense but she was ravenous as soon as it was over.
She made the potion and tried not to panic while brewing it. They had been careless a couple of months ago under the influence of some very strong Firewhiskey she strongly suspected Sirius had brewed himself. She also had some other weird symptoms but she frequently got all of them, though not usually at the same time, around her monthly.
The craziest sign had been a small weight in her uterus. She thought she'd just eaten bad and that it was discomfort and not weight, but now she wasn't so sure. She found herself missing her Mum so bad it hurt and for one desperate moment considered calling Petunia to help. She had a son herself, although she had never met her nephew. She swallowed hard as she finished the potion and shook herself.
Pull it together Evans. She told herself firmly before gunning the potion. Blue meant pregnant, red meant not pregnant. She lifted her shirt and wondered why on earth green didn't mean pregnant. Her stomach glowed blue and she cried; a mixture of ecstatic and terrified.
They were in the middle of a war, but she already loved their baby so much it overwhelmed her and she had only just found out for sure that they existed. Merlin, they were only nineteen. She was overcome with sudden nerves of telling James.
He came home with the rest of the marauders and she surreptitiously shoved all of the romantic dinnerware back in the cupboards before anyone noticed. She almost burst into tears when Remus left angrily at Peter who had declared him the spy and disappeared into the backroom to calm herself. Sirius followed her.
"You okay Lily-petal?" He asked with a small smile that turned to alarm as she threw herself on him.
"Remus just isn't the spy Sirius! How could Peter say such a thing. He's such a sweet person and now Peter is just feeding into his belief that he's a monster."
"I know Lils but you usually get mad, you don't normally cry." She considered him for a couple minutes until he couldn't take it anymore.
"What's going on?" He asked softly and the words came tumbling out of her.
"I'm pregnant. I just found out and was going to tell James tonight but then you lot showed up and apparently my hormones decided to make me even more distraught than I already am and Merlin we're too young and we're in the middle of a war how could we do this but it's too late I love it and how's James gonna react…"
Sirius hugged her tightly. "This is wonderful news." He told her firmly. "James will be over the moon, I know that for a fact. And we'll protect him or her with our lives, you know we will." That was the moment Lily decided Sirius Black was going to be her child's godfather.
"Thanks Sirius." She whispered.
"You alright enough to come back into the living room?" She nodded and he pulled her gently in the direction of the others. Remus and Peter had both left, James was sitting on the couch looking stricken.
"It's not Remus." He said when they emerged.
"No." Sirius responded quietly. "I'll go make sure he's okay and try not to slap Peter upside the head if I see him. G'night." He sent Lily an encouraging smile and a parting hug, clapped James on the back, eyes a little bright, and disapparated.
"You alright?" James eyed her intently, it looked as though she had been crying. She struggled with something for a moment before just blurting it out. "I'm pregnant."
For him it was utter joy. He was going to be a father. A father. Merlin help the kid. He stared at Lily for a second and she seemed dangerously close to tears again.
"This is amazing!" He spun her around and kissed her full on the mouth as she giggled. He let go and immediately dropped to one knee. Her mouth fell into a perfect o.
"Marry me?" He asked her simply and she burst into tears.
"Yes." She breathed and James had never been this happy.
"How long have you been carrying that around? She sniffed, amusement now evident in her tone.
"Since Frank and Alice's wedding." She turned to stare at him.
"James! That was nearly a year ago." HE shrugged awkwardly.
"It never felt like the right time." She kissed him.
"You are ridiculous James Potter." She proclaimed. "But I love you."
He smiled brightly, close to tears himself; heart full with love for her and his unborn child. He dropped to his knees and put his face close to her stomach.
"I love you so much sprog. Thanks for giving me the perfect moment to propose to your Mum."
Lily squeaked at the title but was crying again, this time happy tears. He put his hand on her stomach and she covered it with her own. The strength of their love for this tiny being they had created so strong that he could actually feel it.
You are so loved little one. Mama loves you. Dada loves you.
