Prompt # 10
Radioactive
He sat at the bar, a bottle of vodka in one hand, a scorched and bloody mess serving for his other hand. The pain was intense, even for his own metahuman enhanced endurance. It would not be long now. He expected the rest of them to show up after he had accomplished his mission.
As expected, his dark suited rival Nightwing was the first to enter the bar, accompanied by the green monster child. They both stood at his back, flanking him on either side.
"Priyvyet, Comrades Nightwing and Beast Boy," The larger man said, still drinking the vodka clenched tightly in his hand, "You got here faster than I expected."
"So you knew we would come, Kovar?" Nightwing growled, "Then you know why we are here."
"Oh yes, I know exactly why you are here." Captain Leonid Kovar, the former hero known as Red Star, replied, "You should not have sent her on this mission. She had no place coming to find me."
"She was the one best suited to come find you, Big Red," Beast Boy said, his muscles tense, "Between her powers and your…attachment to her, she was uniquely qualified to track you down."
"You ubliodeck heroes, always thinking you know what's best for everyone." Kovar swore, his good hand turning an angry red as the alcohol began to boil in the bottle, "It has been seven years since you worthless do-gooders invaded my peace and forced me to abandon the solitude I had carefully cultivated. Away from everyone, away from the pain I caused. The pain I wished to cause."
"You were a hero once before, Red Star," Nightwing said calmly, taking a seat next to him at the bar, "You helped defeat the Brotherhood, you saved countless lives in Japan during the earthquakes."
"Yes, I did these things, I do not lie." Kovar replied, slamming the now empty bottle on the bar top, "And every time I acted like the hero people wanted me to be, the zakúskami ones came. The innocent ones. The ones I was given for being a good boy when the ubliodeck officials ran the Red Star program. And every time, I did what I had been programmed to do to them."
"So you don't deny it?" Beast Boy snarled, "You don't deny what you did to those girls?"
"Of course I do not deny it." Kovar said, rising to his feet and walking behind the bar to retrieve another bottle, "After a while, they stopped coming to me and I had to hunt. To feed the growing monster inside of me."
"We have to take you in, Red Star," Nightwing said, rising to his feet and placing a pair of metahuman nullifying handcuffs on the bar top, "I just need to know, where is she."
"Where is who, Comrade Nightwing," Kovar asked, a twisted smile on his face, "Don't think for a second I did not notice what you have been doing. Using the name of my heroic identity, reminding me of my past accomplishments as a hero, speaking calmly while your small, green friend acts as a rather pathetic attempt at the 'Bad Cop'. There will be no easy way. There will only be my way!"
Leaping over the bar top, Kovar lashed out with a straight leg kick, catching Nightwing in the chest, driving him back several feet from the impact. Focusing the small stores of radioactive energy not dedicated to dulling the pain in his ruined arm, He shot a one fingers width red tinted laser at the green hero to his left.
Reacting on instinct and impulse, Beast Boy shifted into a cockroach, taking the blast in mid air before reverting to his normal form and swinging a brutal right cross at the tall Russian's jaw. Connecting with a loud crack, Kovar was knocked to the ground but quickly righted himself before tackling the shapeshifter, raining a rapid barrage of left handed strikes into his chest and face. Taking his eyes off of Nightwing had been a mistake as the dark suited hero extended his staff and launched a single over hand strike at Kovar's ruined right hand. With an anguished cry of pain, Kovar rolled off of Beast Boy, gripping the offending limb in his left hand.
"I'm going to ask again, Red Star," Nightwing said, his voice cold and emotionless, "Tell us where she is and I will make sure you get life in a metahuman containment facility instead of a letting the League sentence you to death for the murder of forty seven girls over the past four years. Choose."
"You are not worthy of her." Kovar shouted, the pain overwhelming him, "She is a princess, and you are a lucky little circus brat who was taken in by a rich man who felt sorry for you. She deserves better. One of noble birth like myself."
"News flash, you arrogant ass," Beast Boy roared, pulling himself up to his full height before kicking Kovar in the stomach, "Nightwing and Star have been married for years. They have a daughter. They are happy."
"And now your happiness will turn to despair," Kovar laughed, his tenuous hold on sanity slipping completely, "She is my treasure, buried in the earth where you cannot go due to your human frailty. She will remain frozen, unable to be warmed by the love you have for her."
"And you've told me everything I need to know." Nightwing said, placing his hand to his ear, "Watchtower, one teleport to containment. Also, I need a scan of the most radioactive areas around our current location. We also need Firestorm brought in. He should be able to break Starfire out of whatever atomic bunker our target locked her in."
As the teleportal energy surrounded Kovar and beamed him off world, Beast Boy put his hand gently on his leaders' shoulder.
"We'll find her Dick," He said, "Rae said Kori's still alive. And if that burn on Kovar's arm is anything to base it off of, she got her pound of flesh from him for taking her hostage."
"I know," Nightwing replied, "Doesn't mean I don't still worry. I'll probably still worry until she's back in my arms again."
"And she will be," Beast Boy replied, "And she will remember that her husband came to her rescue. Just do me a favor and remember the silencing shields around your room at the tower when she goes to say thank you."
AN2: Another short one, but I had fun turning a hero dark in this one. R&R to keep feeding the machine. Peace.
