Chapter Nine

Edward's POV

Alice came back into the house, a smile plastered on her face. I hadn't gone out there, I was in enough pain. Alice saw me, and her smile vanished. "Edward, I'm sorry, I just had to see her," she said. She looked down at the ground. Ever since she had discovered that Bella was alive, she still hadn't been able to get visions of her. She supposed it was because she still thought of Bella as dead or not really a part of her life anymore. She hoped they would come back. So did I. Nessie was still out with Jacob. I knew he had imprinted on her, but they had moved fast. I was so wrapped up in everything else, I didn't care. I wanted Nessie to be happy, and if Jacob made her happy, then so be it. We would be leaving the next day anyways.

As if on cue, Jacob and Nessie came back in the house then, both laughing at something neither would think about. Jacob turned to us. "Bad car wreck out on the road. Funny thing is, one car looked like it might have been coming out of your place." I felt my already freezing body run even colder. Bella.

"Dad, what is it?" asked Nessie, but like all the times Bella had died or gotten hurt or what have you, everything sounded like it was underwater. I heard Alice gasp as she got it, too.

"Bella!" she shrieked.

Jacob looked angry now. "Will you please tell us what is going on? We can't all talk to each other in our heads here!" I shot him a look.

"Bella came to pay us a visit for some reason, and now she's going to die. Again."

I felt Nessie grab my arm. "Dad, you don't know that, she might just be injured or something. She'll probably be okay." She was right, as always. I felt my phone buzz in my pocket. I pulled it out and realized it was Carlisle.

"Hello?" I said. Everyone grew really quiet, so they could every word that was said.

"Edward, tell me how Bella got into a car crash coming out of our house?" He sounded like he was in a hurry, so I talked as fast as I could.

"She came by, for some reason, and when she was leaving, she must have gotten hit by a car."

"Well, she's in critical condition, she might not survive." A thought jumped into my head then. A selfish thought, something that I knew I shouldn't be thinking.

"Not as a human." I said, and left it at that, hanging up on him. I heard several gasps behind me. Rosalie was thinking horrid thoughts about me. About why would I ever wish that on her, I should just let her die in peace, like she should have all those years ago. That was the wrong thing to think. I about whipped around and ripped her head off, but I heard the thoughts of someone I had never heard before just outside the door. They were preparing themselves to knock. As if they were scared or something. I turned away from Rose and walked to the door. She was thinking I was too scared to hurt her, but she was most definitely wrong. I would deal with her later.

I pulled open the door before I heard the knock. A girl about my age stood there. She was obviously a vampire, her dull crimson eyes gave that away, and she was glaring at me. She had dark brown hair and the pale skin, of course. Her mind was blank. She was very good at safe-guarding her thoughts. "Hello," I said. Then she thought something at me. As though she knew I could read minds.

I know you can read minds, and so can I. I came here in regards to your late wife, Bella. I have information about what happened to her. Please, let me talk to you. The only thing that stopped me from making her tell me everything right then was the Italian accent. Volturi. She shook her head and stepped into house. This time she spoke aloud.

"I am not from the Volturi. At least, not anymore. I have a story for you, and I can tell from reading your minds I'll have to talk fast." She glanced at me, and I knew that she was seeking approval. I nodded.

"Go ahead," I said roughly.

She began. "A hundred years or so ago, give or take, my sister Elena and I were changed into vampires. We were dying in Italy of a massive outbreak of Spanish Flu, left to die in the streets. If you're wondering, we don't know who changed us. After we woke up and got control of our minds again, my sister found out she could heal people. Without venom. They could stay human. She healed several flu victims, not wanting people to die when there was something she could do about it. Naturally, the Volturi found about us and took us into the guard. My sister was forced to use her ability, which can heal vampires as well, to heal them only for the Volturi to kill them again. We eventually broke free from there, and left Italy, and Europe all together, not wanting to be found. We roamed this country, and one day after I returned from a hunting trip, Elena was gone. I never found her until about seven years ago. She told me she was passing through the woods when she heard a commotion at a house nearby. A vampire household, but there was a human there, too. But the human was dying, and may have already been dead. She went to the house and found the human. She doesn't think twice, my sister, when it comes to healing people. She healed the human to the point where a hospital could do the rest of the work, and deposited her there. She said the human's name had been Bella. She disappeared after that, and I never saw her again. I just came to tell you, because from the way she made it sound, the vampires the human was with cared for her, but had no idea what happened to her. I'm sorry."

I stood silent, taking all this in. Was it an insane coincidence, or something that was meant to happen? I wasn't sure whether to feel grateful or angry. Grateful, I supposed, because without Elena, Bella would actually be dead.

I looked at the new girl, who had never told us her name. "Anna," she said. "My name is Anna."

"Why didn't you come to us sooner?" I asked. "Why leave us in the dark all these years?"

"It took me a while to find you. I didn't have much information, you see." I could tell she was telling the truth.

"Thank you, Anna," I said. "And if you ever see your sister again, tell her thank you as well." She nodded, and turned for the door.

"Bye, then," she said, and left, leaving everyone speechless. I felt the worst of all.

"This doesn't matter," I said. "She's just going to die anyway. Elena is long gone." But I knew an alternative. I felt my phone in my pocket.

"It's Carlise," said Alice, and the look on her face said it all. I pulled it out in answered it.

"Carlise?" I said, and my voice sounded dead.

"Edward, Bella's been declared dead, there wasn't anything we could do medically, but her heart is still there, but extremely faint. It's now or never."

I gripped the phone. "Do it," I said, and hung up.
