Chapter 8- Investigation
Ryder and the pups arrive at Jake's cabin at 2:03pm. Before the pups parked their vehicles, Ryder told them to park away from the cabin so it doesn't mess up any tire tracks if there was any. Ryder and the pups walk up to the door and Ryder knocks twice before Jake opened it. Jake had a small bag of ice pushed to his head and bags under his eyes. Jake also wasn't standing fully upright.
-Ryder: Did something else happen when we were gone?
Ryder gestures to the bag of ice.
-Jake: Just the usually headaches. I found out some ice helps.
-Everest: Hi Jake!
Everest moves up to Jake. Jake bends down and pets her.
-Jake: Hey Everest.
-Everest: You don't look too good.
-Jake: I don't feel too good either. I couldn't go to sleep last night.
-Ryder: I'm sorry about that Jake, yesterday was crazy.
-Jake: It was crazy...So enough about me, what did you all do today?
-Ryder: Well...we all got a checkup from Marshall, we played and had fun, Those scientists that visited last time came again, and now we are here to investigate the kidnapping.
-Jake: Why don't you all walk in. I'll fix some drinks and then you can elaborate on your day.
Jake moves away from the doorway to let his friends in. They all walk in and Jake heads to the kitchen, Ryder following.
-Jake: I'm guessing you want to help Ryder?
-Ryder: I always want to help.
-Jake: Okay.
Jake points to a cabinet beside the refrigerator.
-Jake: There should be enough dog bowls in there. Lay them anywhere in the living room.
Ryder opens up the cabinet and pulls out seven silver bowls, then lays them in the living room. Jake takes a gallon of water and dumps them into the bowls.
-Jake: Drink up pups.
The pups finds a bowl and starts to drink. Jake goes back into the kitchen, puts the water back in the refrigerator, and grabs two bottled waters from a case on top of the counter. He tosses one to Ryder and they both take a drink.
-Jake: Sorry for not having anything else to drink. I need to pick up some groceries today.
-Ryder: Don't be sorry Jake, water is the best thing you can drink.
-Jake: Yeah, but I prefer Coke.
They all laugh.
-Everest: Jake, I noticed your truck wasn't outside.
-Jake: Yeah, my friend picked it up this morning.
-Ryder: So how are you suppose to pick up groceries?
Jake looks at Everest, which she nods.
-Jake: Everest will take me like always.
-Ryder: But the snow plow doesn't have enough room for what you need to pick up.
-Jake: We pull a wagon every time we go out.
-Ryder: Oh, Okay.
-Jake: ...So, what about scientists?
Rocky goes outside.
-Ryder: Oh, right. Yesterday morning two scientists visited me and the pups, asking questions about the pups. They left mad since I wouldn't let them have 'physical evidence'.
-Jake: I know what you mean.
-Ryder: Well, they visited this morning still wanting the pups, gave me a note signed from the president telling me to hand over the pups, and I convinced them to leave.
-Jake: How did you convince them?
-Ryder: I punched one of them.
-Jake: You punched one? That is not like you.
-Ryder: I couldn't control myself. I still feel bad about it, but if I have to do it again then I will.
Rocky walks back in with a crumpled piece of paper.
-Rocky: Here's that paper Ryder mentioned.
Jake uncrumples the paper and looks at it.
-Ryder: You kept the paper Rocky?
-Rocky: I thought we might needed it later.
-Jake: Huh.
Jake walks to his bedroom and walks in. In a second he comes out with another piece of paper. He hands it to Ryder.
-Jake: I found this on my porch this morning.
Ryder reads it.
-Ryder: Same note.
-Jake: Yep. What do you think we should do about it?
Ryder takes both papers and throws them in the trash.
-Jake: Good choice... Well, I think I should go to the town now. While me and Everest is out you can search for clues. Everest, are you ready?
-Everest: Yep!
Everest and Jake leaves to go shopping. The rest of the pups finish their drinks.
-Ryder: You pups go outside and look for clues about the kidnapping while I clean and put away the dog bowls.
The pups goes outside and Ryder picks up the bowls and goes to the kitchen.
-Chase: Alright pups. To find clues faster we should separate into three teams of two. Find a partner and start searching.
-Skye: (in her head) Okay, I am not picking Rubble because he is too nosey. I am not picking Zuma because he is always acting childish. I would go with Chase but the other pups will realize that I like him. So my only two choices is Rocky and Marshall.
-Rubble: (in his head) As long as Chase and Skye goes together I don't care who I'm with.
-Chase: (in his head) I hope Skye is last so she is on my team.
-Marshall/Rocky/Zuma: (in their heads) I wonder who will pick me?
Marshall and Rubble decides to be on teams.
-Skye: (in her head) Well, Marshall is out. I guess it is Rocky.
Skye walks over to Rocky.
-Skye: You want to be on teams Rocky?
-Rocky: Sure, I guess.
-Chase: (in his head) Well, I guess I am with Zuma.
-Chase: Your with me Zuma.
-Zuma: Alright! I get the only pup trained in searching for clues!
-Chase: Wow, you still have the same amount of energy from when you were five.
-Zuma: It is just how I am.
Zuma starts to hop up and down.
-Zuma: Now lets get searching!
Chase and Zuma searches in the driveway, Rubble and Marshall searches the left side of the cabin, and Skye and Rocky searches the right side. Ryder comes out and sees the pups searching everywhere except behind the cabin, so he searches there.
Chase and Zuma looks and sniffs around in the driveway.
-Chase: Did you find anything Zuma?
-Zuma: No, nothing. You?
-Chase: Nothing yet.
Rocky and Skye investigates around a little slope with trees on the bottom.
Skye catches an odor in the middle of the slope and follows it close to the back of the cabin.
-Rocky: You found something Skye?
-Skye: Maybe.
Rocky follows Skye to a tree. 'Sniff, Sniff'
Skye looks up and sniffs again. She then sees a squirrel pop its head out of a hole in the tree.
-Skye: I knew the smell was familiar.
-Rocky: Oh well. Let's keep looking.
-Skye: Hold on Rocky. Maybe the squirrel is the kidnapper.
Skye and Rocky both share a laugh before continuing.
Marshall and Rubble looks around a few trees. After passing the same tree, Marshall sees something.
-Marshall: Rubble, come here.
-Rubble: What is it Marshall?
Marshall points to some footprints.
-Rubble: Looks like human footprints.
-Marshall: I'm gonna follow them.
Ryder steps behind the cabin and looks around everywhere. The only thing he found was a piece of trash, which he threw away.
-Ryder: I wonder if the pups found something yet?
The pups and Ryder looked for twenty-three minutes, and the only thing found was the footprints, which Marshall just started to follow.
-Chase: Zuma, come here!
-Zuma: What is it Chase?
Chase points to some footprints at the end of the driveway.
-Zuma: Your the tracker Chase. Find where they went!
Chase follows the footprints, sniffing them the whole time.
'Blam' Chase and Marshall crashes into each other.
-Chase: Sorry Marshall. I was just following some footprints.
-Marshall: I was following footprints too!
Chase looks back at the footprints.
-Chase: Where did the footprints start for you?
-Marshall: At those three trees over there.
Marshall points to where he was searching.
-Chase: My trail started close to the road. Hmmm?
-Rubble: You got something Chase?
-Chase: The footprints start at the road and stop at the trees. Their car seems like it was still at the road instead of the driveway when they kidnapped Everest.
-Marshall: Lets go tell Ryder.
-Ryder: Tell me what?
Marshall, Chase, Zuma, and Rubble jumps from hearing Ryder's voice. Ryder was walking up to them from behind.
-Ryder: Sorry for scaring you pups. I decided to check on how you pups are doing. I couldn't find anything from behind the cabin.
-Marshall: Ryder, me and Chase found some human footprints that start from the road and ends at the trees.
-Ryder: Good job pups. Show me the trail.
Chase points to the trail and Ryder follows them to the road. Ryder crosses the road and crosses it again, back to the pups.
-Ryder: There is no other footprints on the other side.
Ryder looks at the dug up dirt on the road.
-Ryder: Judging by the tire marks, they definitely left by car here.
Ryder follows the trail now to the trees.
Ryder: The tons of footsteps here and some scrappings in the dirt, it looks like a struggle happened.
-Marshall: Would this be where they captured, Everest.
Marshall almost couldn't say his sentence.
-Ryder: It might be. We need to ask Everest when she comes back.
-Rocky: Hey guys. Me and Skye didn't find anything. What about you all?
-Zuma: Footprints Dude. Leading from the road to here, behind the twees.
-Skye: It sounds like someone was spying on Jake and Everest.
-Ryder: We won't know for sure intil we can question them.
-Chase: Since we're done looking for clues, what do we do now?
-Ryder: Lets go back in the cabin intil Jake and Everest comes back.
Ryder and the pups walk back in the cabin and stayed around the fire.
-Ryder: I think you pups deserve something for helping with the investigation.
Ryder pulls out some pup treats.
-Rubble: Oh boy!
-Chase/Rocky: 'howls'
Ryder counts the pup treats because it didn't look like enough. He scavenges his pockets and doesn't find any more.
-Ryder: Sorry pups, but I only have four pup treats. Four of you will get half of a pup treat.
-Rubble: So who is getting the full pup treats?
-Ryder: Well, not to make them seem more important, but Marshall and Chase did find the trail, so they deserved the larger portion.
Ryder tosses the pup treats to the feet of the pups. Each pup eats there treat except for Chase and Marshall.
-Ryder: Is something wrong Chase and Marshall?
-Marshall: I'm gonna keep my treat for later.
-Ryder: And you Chase?
-Chase: I don't feel right eating it.
-Zuma: You can always give it to one of us.
-Chase: Okay. But whoever catches it gets to have it.
Zuma, Rocky, Rubble, and Skye started hopping around ready to catch the treat. Chase throws it up in the air, almost hitting the ceiling, and it lands in the mouth of whoever jumped the highest.
-Rocky: No fair! Chase knew that Skye can jump the highest! That's why he threw it really high!
The pups nods saying 'Yeah!'
-Ryder: (laughing) Settle down pups, there's plenty more pup treats at the Lookout. Just be patient.
