Unexpected Family
Emmett sits Sara down on a large boulder next to a stream surrounded by a thick grove of trees where the family likes to come and hunt and just waits her out, but not for long. Emmett watches as Sara's breathing begins to pick up and her eyes start to glow a bright electric blue from a buildup of her power and rage, the wind is blowing her hair wildly.
"Sara…sweet heart" Emmett growls to his mate, as his vampire side nears the surface.
Sara's eyes shift to Emmett's as she lets out a low growl, "Where?" Emmett is not sure if he wants to answer so gives the obvious answer, "We are in the woods far from any humans and we are safe here"
Sara looks at Emmett again, her eyes sparking as the wind begins to make the trees eerily creak at the force of it.
Sara stands and begins pacing in front of Emmett as sparks begin to crackle from her hands, "No…where is the little girl that dared to touch me" Sara spits out.
"Sara….sweet heart you need to calm down" Emmett coos to her which only infuriates Sara more as she is now focused on Emmett and begins stalking towards him, backing him up against a rather large tree.
Without warning Sara's fisted hand lands next to Emmett's head and into the tree, causing bits and pieces to cover both of them before Emmett could dodge away from Sara.
Both Sara and Emmett hear the cracking of the tree truck as it began to sway; Sara strikes it again and again her anger and power giving her the motivation to chop the tree down, her fists protected by her shield.
"AAAAAAAA" Sara screams loudly at the tree as it begins to finally topple over as she collapses down to her knees.
"Timber" Emmett calls out grinning; he knows how serious this is but can't help but be proud of his mate and her strength, but also can't help but think; 'all this power, yet still severely abused by Shelly, he'll have to ask Jasper and Carlisle about that one later'
When the tree, leaves and dust finally settle so did Sara, as Emmett cautiously watches Sara fall to the ground like a puppet who's strings have been cut begins to sob. Emmett quickly kneels next to her side pulling her into his lap as they sit together in the woods surrounded by trees and debris. Emmett begins to rock Sara as she continues to sob, her face buried in his neck.
"Shh…its okay sweet heart, let it all out….shh" Emmett cooed to her as he continues rocking her gently.
"What to go home…..please Emmett….want…need to see the kids…please" Sara whispers into Emmett's neck around another painful sob and by her slurred words Emmett could tell she was starting to drift off.
Emmett didn't know how long they sat out in the woods, but he did manage to rock Sara to sleep, fitful as it was as he watches the sun begin to set and the shadows grow long in the woods.
Emmett easily stood while still holding Sara in his arms making his way out of the woods and back towards home. He knew as soon as the decision was made Alice would see and hopefully give the family a heads up.
Unbeknownst to Emmett there was someone else that stood hidden in the tree tops watching, their own gifts masking their scent silencing their movements, seeing everything and calculating the value for this information, it may just save their neck as the spy waits till the Cullen boy begins carrying the powerful human back through the woods before disappearing thinking that perhaps those boys in Italy would find all this of interest..
***Cullen House***
Jasper was holding Alice wrapped in his arms as she came out of her vision with a sigh of relief as she first looks up at Jasper then over to the rest of the family before leaning heavily into his chest inhaling his scent.
"They're okay and heading back. Only one tree was demolished" Alice says with a smirk, her nose still buried in Jaspers chest.
"No way" Edward calls out in shock seeing the image in Alice's mind.
"What, you know Emmett likes to tear down trees when he's upset" Carlisle comments.
Edward and Alice look at each other and smile, "It wasn't Emmett" they say at the same time causing the family to just stare at them as Alice lets out a giggle that sounds like the tinkling of bells and Edward smirks at the surprised looks on Jasper and Carlisle faces before Carlisle runs his hands down his face is disbelief.
Esme brings Emma into the living room, sits down on the couch and pulls her onto her lap, getting cozy as Esme grabs a blanket from the back of the couch to wrap around them and begins quietly reading to her from one of her chosen books that Sara had picked out for the kids.
"Where's Sam?" Rosalie asks.
"In the kitchen finishing up putting his school books away, he'll be here in a minute" Esme informed them as the rest of the family decides to sit around in the various chairs and couches to listen to Esme's smooth and calming voice, when they hear the creek of the back kitchen door open and close.
"I'll get him" Jasper says softly as he drops a kiss on Alice's head.
When Jasper steps out onto the back porch it's to find Sam sitting in the swing that Emmett and Sara enjoy so much and decides to join him.
"Mind if I join ya bud?" Jasper asks putting on his thick accent.
Sam looks up at Jasper with tears pooling in his eyes and reaches out to Jasper wanting to be picked up and held.
Jasper does not hesitate as he reaches down lifting Sam up to him and against his chest and sits them both down on the swing, mentally asking Edward to bring out a blanket for them. Edward quickly appears wrapping them both up, drops a kiss on Sam's head ruffles Jaspers messy blond curls making Jasper growl at Edward before he disappears as quickly as he came.
"What's going on in that head of yours, hmm?" Jasper asks.
"Scared" Sam whispers, tucked up to Jasper's chest.
"Why's that?"
"Sister and Emmett not home…..what…what if Shelly got them?" Sam asks his chin and lower lip trembles.
"Oh buddy, they're both okay and should be home soon, okay" Jasper tells Sam as he begins to gently make the swing move while rubbing his hand up and down Sam's back.
"How about you tell me about you and Emma's day at school while we wait, hmm?" Jasper asks hopping to distract Sam till Emmett and Sara get back.
Jasper waits patiently while Sam gathers his thoughts, feeling the subtle changes in the child's emotions.
"Well, I know sister likes it and I do to I guess. The teacher Ms. B is really nice and funny sometimes. We do lots of fun things in her classroom" Sam tells Jasper, knowing his family is listening and can practically feel Carlisle hovering in the kitchen wanting to come out to join them and so Jasper tells him to come outside under his breath at vampire speed.
When Carlisle steps out onto the back porch Sam gives him a big smile, Jasper scoots over so he can join them on the swing as Sam moves his blanket so it would cover up Carlisle as well.
"Thank you Samuel" Carlisle says giving him a warm smile before acting like he was getting all warm and cozy under the blanket, Jasper just rolls his eyes at Carlisle's antics.
"So, school is fun I hear…" Carlisle prompts Sam to start talking again.
"Yep" snapping his 'p'. "Ms. B lets us play games to help us learn our letters and colors, we get gold stars when we are good which I like a lot, we have recess and I made a new friend that isn't a girl" Sam tells Jasper and Carlisle excitedly making them chuckle understanding that living with 2 girls can be very frustrating for the one little boy.
"What about Emma, has she made any new friends?" Jasper asks.
"Yeah but…there is this boy that keeps following her around in the playground…he even gave her a flower today…it was so funny….she sniffed it them sneezed all the petals off" Sam tells them as he started giggling as he remembers. Jasper and Carlisle chuckle as well as the rest of the family looks over at Emma still in Esme's lap quietly listening to her story and trying not to burst into laughter.
"Oh dear, was the little boy mad?" Carlisle asks once he got himself under control again.
"No, but Emma was till, I think his name is Mark…yeah its Mark ran and got her another one"
"He sounds like a nice boy" Jasper says but before he could ask another question about school they hear a car coming down the drive and Emmett is close enough to the house for him to call out at vampire speed that they'll be back in a couple of minutes.
"Hey bud, I think someone is going to be here in a few minutes why don't you wait here with Jasper okay" Carlisle says as he gets up from the swing and heads inside to be met by Edward as soon as he steps into the kitchen.
"Chief Swan is coming" Edward informs Carlisle.
"Calm yourself Edward, we will great him and see what he wants to say, we may need him as an ally in the near future with the kids, plus we must still maintain our secret understood" Carlisle said firmly and loudly enough that the rest of the family could clearly hear him.
Carlisle makes his way to the front door to great Charlie and welcomes him inside. At the same time Emmett is walking out of the tree line with Sara still asleep in his arms and is greeted by a worried Jasper and Sam.
"Hey guys….she's just sleeping bud, I'm going to take her upstairs okay" Emmett says to Sam.
"M'kay" Sam mumbles as Jasper also stands to carry Sam still wrapped in the blanket into the house behind Emmett.
It seems that the world decided to tilt on is axis at this moment as Sara gasps a wake forcing Emmett to set her back on her feet but still wrapped in his protective arms as Emmett notices Chief Swan in the living room talking quietly to Carlisle. Jasper slowly makes his way around Emmett's bulky frame to deposit Sam on the other side of Esme were she can cuddle and watch over both children, unsure what is about to transpire.
Carlisle turns to Emmett and Sara and takes a deep breath, sending out mental and emotional warnings to his sons to brace for anything not knowing how Sara and Emmett are going to react in the next few seconds.
Charlie notices Emmett first when he walked into the room. Charlie never had a problem with Emmett when he started dating Bella, he actually thought he would be good for her.
"Emmett"
"Chief Swan"
"Sara, this is Chief Swan….Bella's father.
Sara looks at the man standing in the living room surrounded by vampires still dressed in his police uniform and steps out of Emmett's arms to approach Charlie while the vampire family held a collective un-needed breath.
"Sir" Sara says holding out her hand to shake while watching his facial expressions as she slips into her second site to look at his colors.
"Sara" Charlie takes her hand to shake and receives a barely felt shock causing Charlie to pull back.
"Ouch"
"Sorry, must be some static electricity in the air, you alright?" Sara apologizes as she smiles innocently.
"No worries….um…I wanted to come over and apologize for my daughter's behavior at school today and to let you and your family know she has been suspended from school for a week and is grounded for a month" Charlie informed everyone. "The school enforces a no tolerance policy for bullying or violence and I support that even if it's my own kid…so I just wanted you to hear it from me instead of all the rumors that will be flying around the school tomorrow" Charlie finishes telling everyone.
Sara steps a little closer to Charlie seeing the hurt, disappointment and embarrassment that this has caused him and can see that he is a good person and is swallowing his pride to do what's best for everyone even at his own expense. Sara gives him a true smile as she places her hand on his arm hoping to elevate some of his burden.
"Thank you for coming here and telling us this in person, I know it's a bitter pill to swallow but I respect you all the more for it" Sara tells him simply as she watches him take a deep breath and exhale roughly like the world has been lifted of his shoulders.
"Thank you" Charlie says quietly.
"I would also like to apologize to you Chief Swan as may have been baiting Bella a bit, so I am sorry" Sara tells Charlie surprising him but nods his head in acceptance.
Charlie stays for a few more minutes being introduced to Emma and Sam, explaining to Emma that no, it is not a caterpillar on his top lip much to Sara's embarrassment and Cullen's chuckles before Carlisle walks Charlie to the door and out to his car.
Carlisle offers Charlie his hand which Charlie accepts gladly; not wanting to lose the best doctor that Folks has had in years.
"Charlie if I may, there may be a matter for the Chief of Police that I would like to talk with you about if you have some time in the next few days" Carlisle informs Charlie.
"My door and office is always open Dr. Cullen" Charlie replies honestly as he stands a little straighter.
"Thank you, we will be in touch soon, it's a very sensitive and fluid situation I'm sure you understand"
"Of course, is it about the kids?" Charlie asks as gut instinct kicks in that there is more to their story than what has been heard around town.
"It's complicated" Is Carlisle only response.
"Dr. Cullen…Carlisle when it comes to family it always is" Charlie says with a sly smirk before opening the car door of his police cruiser to get in. Giving a wave to Carlisle, he starts the car and pulls back onto the drive to head back home, hopefully to some Vitamin R and a baseball game.
