Remember how I said that I wrote half a chapter then decided it would fit better later? Well this is that chapter. Hope you like it!
When Annabeth woke up, she could smell smoke. She put on a dressing gown and wondered downstairs to see what it was - whether a whole room was on fire or just a dodgy candle. She could smell it the strongest coming from the living room so she headed through there to investigate. When Annabeth caught sight of what was causing the smell, she went into panic mode, the Christmas tree was on fire! After a few deep breaths, and a couple 'What am I gonna do?'s the blonde regained her focus. The whole Christmas tree wasn't engulfed in flames, only a few branches were on fire, and several around then were smouldering. It can't have been burning for very long.
Annabeth ran to the kitchen, and filled up a jug with water. She filled two, just incase one wasn't going to be enough, then went back through to the living room. It was a wonder the smoke alarms hadn't gone off yet. She thought, as she pulled the dressing gown up over her mouth and nose. Smoke inhalation will kill you before fire will. She poured the jugs onto the branches that were burning, but a couple were still left smouldering so she went to refill the jugs and pour them over the tree again.
AFter that, the fire was out, so Annabeth inspected the damage. First, she opened the windows to let the smoke out, but her movements around the room must have stirred the smoke up, because the alarm finally decided that it was going to go off. "Really? Now?" She asked it, as she went to get a broom so that she could reach the little button on it so it would turn off. It was a miracle no one else had woken up yet.
Then she grabbed a towel to dry up all the water that was on the ground. Luckily, no presents had been put under the tree yet, so none had been soaked or burned. It was pretty obvious that the small fire had been caused by one of those yankee candles, the kind you get in jars, that seemed to have fallen off the end table by the sofa. Annabeth wasn't sure how it had fallen, but someone had probably knocked it off last night and hadn't noticed.
As Annabeth was drying up the water, she heard footsteps coming downstairs. Bobby wondered in in his pyjamas, rubbing sleep out of his eyes. "Annabeth what was that- What happened to the tree?!" He asked, in shock as he stared at the leftovers if the evnt that had just taken place.
"There was a small fire, and I'm guessing it was the smoke alarm that woke you up. Even though it was far too late." She grumbled, glaring up at the white contraption on the ceiling. "But I dealt with it. Do you mind going to get a fan? It might help blow some of this smoke out of the room."
"Okay." Bobby did as he was told, surprised by how calm his sister was. He came back and plugged it in, aiming it at the open windows. "It's freezing in here." He complained, wrapping his arms around his chest, "Do you want me to go get you some slippers or something?" He asked, seeing his sisters bare (and close to blue) feet.
"Nah I'm good, but could you go wake up Dad and Helen? They'll probably want to know there was a fire in their house."
"Sure." He went back upstairs, and a couple minutes later, Annabeth's parents came running down the stairs.
"Bobby said there was a fire! Wait...where is it?" Frederick asked, looking around at the room.
"I dealt with it." Annabeth stood up holding a sopping wet towel from mopping up the water. "But we lost a few cheap plastic ornaments," She explained, pointing at a half melted purple bauble on the floor, "and you'll probably want a new tree, but all in all it wasn't much of a disaster."
"Well are you okay?"
"I'm-" She coughed, "fine."
"You inhaled a load of smoke kid, you need to go to the doctor."
"It's 5.30 in the morning, I'll go later."
"You better."
The blonde went back upstairs to get some more sleep, and noticed one of the advent calendar's windows were open. "A Christmas tree. Of course." She sighed, putting it down.
Annabeth sat in the waiting room of the doctor's surgery, waiting for her appointement. "Annabeth Chase?" A nurse asked, holding a clipboard.
"Here." She stood up and walked over to the nurse, following her to the doctor's room.
"Dr Castellan will be in here shortly."
Annabeth smiled and sat down, checking her phone as she waited for the doctor. The door opened behind her, "Okay, it says you're in here for smoke inhalation, Miss- Annabeth?"
"Luke?" She realised, putting her phone away. "You're a doctor?"
"Yeah I am. And you're a smoke inhalee? How'd that happen?"
"There was a small fire in my house, the Christmas tree got a little burnt, but nothing was ruined so it's all good. My Dad just wanted me to get a check-up."
"Okay, in that case, let's check you up." He squeezed his eyes shut. "Ugh, that sounded kinda pervy didn't it?"
Annabeth laughed, "Lil bit."
"I'm just going to get started."
Ten minutes later, they were done. "You're all good."
"Thank you."
Luke sat back in his seat, "So, this might sound a little weird - especially since I just stared down your throat - but is there any way in which you might possibly want to go on a date with me?"
"Oh!" Annabeth exclaimed, surprised, but then she thought about it for a moment, and smiled. "Yeah. That would be nice."
"Alright. Cool." He nodded, "Would tomorrow be too soon?"
"Tomorrow would be great. Let's do it. My number should be on the sheet." She pointed to the paper he was holding, with the form that she had to fill out when she got there. "But I should get going, and I'm sure you have more patients to see. I'll see you tomorrow?" She asked, standing up.
"See you then." Luke smiled, and watched her walk out of the room.
Annabeth wondered around the garden store, looking for the perfect tree to replace the previously perfect tree. "Little late to be shopping for a Christmas tree isn't it? Most people usually have one by the first of December." A certain dark haired boy's voice came from behind the tree in front of her.
She took a step to the side so that she could see him. "Oh yeah? And what are you doing here Percy? Just smelling the pine?"
"Nah I'm here to get some things for my mum. But seriously what happened to your tree?"
"It burnt down."
"What?!"
"Okay well that's a bit of an exaggeration, but it caught on fire, I put it out, and now we need a new tree. Care to help?"
"Sure." He agreed, starting to look with her. "This one looks good."
"Are you kidding me? That one is so ugly. The branches are uneven, half the pines are missing, and there's not even a top spike to put the star on."
"Well sure it has it's flaws, but that doesn't mean it isn't every bit as perfect as the rest of them."
Annabeth scoffed, "Don't give me that hippie bullshit, I want a perfect tree."
"To each her own." He shrugged, and kept walking. "This one?"
"Ugh an Alberta White Spruce? No thank you."
"You get really snobby about Christmas trees, you know that right?"
"I'm perfectly aware." She spotted a tree, "Ooh hey look at this one! It's perfect!"
"It is." Percy admitted, but he wasn't looking at the tree.
