Precious Love - James Morrison

Christmas in Germany is one of her favorite things about living there. One of her saving graces. The entire town turns into a Christmas village. Everyone is happy. She's very happy. This year is different. This year Owen is on his way to her to spend Christmas in Germany. This transcontinental booty call has been exhausting but Owen claims that he doesn't mind. She was supposed to fly to Seattle for Christmas, they were supposed to alternate, but Teddy convinced him to come to Germany and experience Christmas there. She wants to experience Christmas there with someone she loves. Go to the Christmas markets. See the Christmas lights. She feels giddy. A little too giddy.

They've decided to give this relationship a chance. The first time he showed up at her door was blissful and it crashed and burned so fast. Their twenty four hour rendezvous in bed turned into a screaming match and her kicking him out. But he came back. He came back and he waited outside her door. He insisted until she talks to him again. And of course she couldn't help but hear him out. She's furious, yes, but she's not going to let that end this beginning of something that could be wonderful.

So she let him in and they talked. They talked fully clothed. Sober. They talked seriously, like adults. She tried to be hard on him but naturally she got softer and softer. And he said things that she believed, because she has to, because she's going to let herself love him. And she's going to let herself be loved. And this is Owen. Owen. They've loved each other for far too long to not give it a chance.

So he stayed. He stayed and they went hiking. She showed him her hospital. Her kingdom. She even showed him her favorite chicken place. They went out to dinner with her friends. Showed him the small community she created in Landstuhl. And they were happy. They were distracted. They were in love.

By the third day, they're attached. Neither want to let go.

"I'll call you every day"

"You won't it will be impossible."

"We'll try"

"Okay, we'll try"

"And then what?"

"And then Christmas you fly to Seattle"

"But Owen… Christmas is magical in Germany"

"Okay."

"Okay? So you'll fly back here Christmas."

"But you'll fly to Seattle on Valentines Day"

"That's so corny"

"But you will.. right?"

"Okay, I will."

"Teddy, Just so you know… I'm all in."

"Me too."

She reminisces while she watches the snow fall. In the last six weeks she's thought of nothing but him. Everything about him. How he made it snow in the desert. How he did that for her, when all this time he did it for their guys. It was all for her. Everything was all for her. And now they have to make changes. Rational changes. Responsible changes. From best friends to lovers. They can't keep commuting across the world. They need to make this real.

She hops off the couch when she hears the knock on her door. She throws her arms around him when she sees him. She breathes him in. Her most favorite smell. She buries her face in his neck and leaves a kiss. She melts in his arms. It's where she needs to be every day of her life.

He throws his bag on the floor and lifts her so she can wrap her legs around him and carry her to her bed.

"Six weeks was too long. That can't happen again" He pants into her mouth

"No. It can't" Her teeth grazing his bottom lip.

He throws her into the bed and she pulls him into her arms.

"Owen" She pants "I'm glad we're doing this"

He was in the middle of a very pleasant dream when he suddenly felt a chill waking him up. Suddenly the covers are off of him and Teddy is standing on his side of the bed. The sun is bright, and he squints, adjusting to the light.

"What the fuck, Teddy" he mutters reaching for covers but Teddy pulls it off again.

"Good morning" Teddy says

"No" He mutters "Jet lag"

"Oh please, Owen. You're not jet lagged. Let's go. Wake up. We have a whole day ahead of us" She says excited like a small child.

"I'm going to be here for two whole weeks. Let me sleep in."

"We'll sleep in tomorrow. But Owen! It's perfect out. We have so many errands to run."

He mutters and hides under the pillow, but then he suddenly feels her body weight against him. Her warm, silky body on top of his. She moves the pillow from his face and kisses his cheek.

"Owen, babe, we have to get up. We have go to the store and buy some Christmas stuff and then go to the Christmas market to walk around and eat and maybe get some ornaments, special ones for us. And then we can pick a Christmas tree. And then we can come back home and catch up on other things" She says as her hand trails from his face down his chest and into his boxers, caressing him gently.

"Okay, but after you finish what you started" He responds, his voice raspy from sleep. He can feel her breath against his cheek then her mouth is on his earlobe.

It took him a very long time to realize this is how he wants to be woken up. No one has been like this with him. You can feel the genuine love and affection. The genuine need and want for him. Her genuine love for him.

He holds her on the hips and adjusts her as he feels himself get hard. He finally opens his eyes and he sees her smirking at him. Those beautiful eyes, sultry. Batting her eyelashes.

"Good morning" She says. Unclear if she's talking to him or their little friend between her legs. "There we go. She says"

"I really am jet lagged though"

"No you're not" She says laughing. Her hand guiding him into her.

"Okay, okay."

"Okay?"

"Okay, let's do everything you wanna do today"

"Yay" She whispers in his ear as she moves along with him. He enjoys every thrust, every movement. It's snowy and the soft morning light peeks through, and he can smell her hair and everything is perfect.

She is perfect. They should have done this a long time ago. He holds her face and stares into her eyes. He hasn't seen them that bright before. She looks happy, he can recognize that. They come together, close together. He wraps his arms around her and pulls her close while they both catch their breaths.

"I love you" they mutter, panting. They lie in bed, quietly caressing every inch of skin within reach.

Then she rolls out of bed, back to her perky self. "Let's go, Hunt. Get up." She says, laughing as she pulls his leg.

He laughs "Okay, okay, I'm up"

He watches her pad to the kitchen to make coffee. The way she gets on her tip toe to reach mugs from the cupboard. Her legs, beautiful toned legs, exposed. His T-shirt covering the rest of her body. He feels butterflies in his stomach, something he has not felt in a while. She makes him feel alive again. There is something so nice and comfortable about all this. This could be their everyday forever. He admires her a little longer until she turns around and notices him. She gives him a smile. He's tempted to take her back into the bed.

"How are you not full?" Owen chuckles as Teddy gets in line for some German pastry.

Teddy just crinkles her nose with a little smile and shakes her head and wraps her arm around his. "Are you having fun?"

"Of course. I'm with you, and it's nice and snowy and christmassy. I'm stuffed in bratwursts and pretzels. How can I not have fun?" He says as she nuzzles into him for warmth.

"The Christmas market is more fun with you."

"Is this a routine Teddy Altman date or am I special?"

"Nah, this is a Solo Teddy Altman routine. No one was ever special enough to be invited… then comes you." She says eyeing the pastries, not noticing he's staring at her. A snowflake gets caught in her eyelash and she blinks it away. Owen can't help but smile. "Are you gonna have a pastry? I was thinking of getting the Mutzenmandeln."

Owen chuckles "What is that?"

"The donut thing with the powder"

"Are you seriously not full?" He asks laughing

"Whatever, you're missing out."

"You're not going to share?"

She shrugs "Depends." She says smirking.

They spent the whole day in bed, despite Teddy's attempts to drag Owen out of the apartment and take him around Landstuhl. But sometime in the afternoon they decided to check out the market. "It's probably better when it's darker so you can see all the lights." Teddy exclaimed as got dressed. He just watched her in awe. In awe of the ways she makes the best out of every situation.

And she was right. It was better with all the lights. It was cold but they had each other. And the snow made everything more magical. They went to every stall. Bought some Christmas decorations. She made him try most of the food. "You have to have pretzels. I know you're thinking 'Teddy I've had a pretzel before' but trust me, Owen, this guy sells the best pretzels." She says animatedly. And she was right.

The entire city was magical. It was romantic. And Teddy was happy. And that makes him happier.

There were Christmas lights everywhere. A Christmas tree in the center of the square. Carolers. Kids running around. Lovers nuzzled. And he looks by his side and there's Teddy with her German donuts and her hot cider that she makes him hold. And it's perfect. He thinks this is the most perfect holiday he's ever had. He's in love with her. He'll do anything for her. He even let her shove a donut in his mouth. She was right. It was good. She's always right.

She's in heaven. This is her heaven. She loves Christmas and she loves snow and she loves Owen. And she has all that today. After the market they picked out a Christmas tree. She laughed her way home as Owen struggled carrying the tree by himself. He insisted, Teddy just rolled her eyes.

Now they're back home and the fire is burning and an old Christmas record is playing and there's a Christmas tree in the corner and Owen is sitting on the floor untangling Christmas lights and she just wants to wrap her body around him.

"Owen? Wine? Beer? Scotch?"

"Whatever you're having" he says absentmindedly, but she just hands him a glass of scotch. "Thanks" he mutters and he looks up at her. "You're having water?"

"Flushing down all the sweets. Why did you let me eat that much?" She says as she plops herself on the floor next to him.

Owen just laughs at her. "You were happy."

"I really was. Are you?"

"Very" He says as he finally untangles the wires. "Now I'm even happier."

"Owen…" She says, grabbing his face and staring into his eyes. She leans in to give him a kiss, her thumbs caressing his cheeks. "I'm really happy you're here. And I'm really, really happy we're together."

"Me too."

"But we have to figure out what we're going to do"

"Yeah, I know."

"We have to talk. Like, seriously."

"Now?" He asks as he gets up to wrap the lights around the tree.

She nods as she picks an ornament and hangs on the tree. "I'm thinking the compromise would be me moving to Seattle, I guess"

"You'd move back to Seattle? Really?" He asks, catching her eye.

"Do I have a choice? I'd be giving up a lot but…. I don't think you want to leave Seattle again."

"I'm a Seattle guy. It's where I've had my roots and enlisting just made me realize that I'm always going to be a Seattle guy. But you? You pack up and you move to Texas and then you move to Florida and then to New York and you join the Army and you move to Germany then to Iraq and then to Seattle and then back to Germany. Maybe it's a good time to plant your roots somewhere?"

"And why can't that be Germany?"

"Because you hate Germany"

"I'm giving up a lot, Owen. I do love my job. I mean that."

He kisses her "We don't have to figure it out now. We can keep flying back and fo—"

"We do, though. Now." She says biting her lip as she keeps her eyes on the ornaments. Making sure they're perfectly placed and equally distant from each other, avoiding his eyes.

"Why?" He asks as he helps decorate the other side of the tree.

She can feel her heart beat faster. And faster. "Because I'm pregnant, Owen."

The record stops playing, waiting to be flipped. The fire in the fireplace is crackling. And she swears she her hear heart stop beating when he doesn't respond right away.

"What" He says after a few beats.

"You heard me"

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"Teddy" he says, in disbelief, in elation, she can't tell. His eyes peeking from the other side of the tree.

"I know" she says with a small smile. "I was going to wait until Christmas to tell you. And I made a plan and everything and I got a cute little onesie. But I just couldn't wait anymore. I had to tell you. I've been wanting to tell you since you got here but…"

"Wow." He says. Still shocked.

"I know. Its—" She laughs when he finally moves towards her and pulls her into his arms. "It's a little shocking… but…"

"When did you —What— How do you—"

"Just the other day. I didn't wanna say it over the phone. And I wanted to make it spec—"

He cuts her off with a kiss. A really long one. A really passionate one.

"Merry Christmas." She says.

"Marry me." Now it's her heart that skips. "Teddy. Marry me."

She wraps her arms around his neck and pulls him close. "You just got divorced" She says with a laugh.

"Say yes anyway."

"Yes."
