Chapter 8

The following morning May woke up at the usual time of 5:15am, so she can do tai chi and get a head start on the work day. She threw on some yoga pants and a sports bra and grabbed a hoodie from the back of the door. As normal she poked her head on on all of the children, a habit she developed sometime after fostering Jemma and Leo. She checked on Bobbi first, peering around the door she saw that Bobbi had a textbook open on the bed next to her and the lamp was still on. Late night study session, May just shook her head and crept into the room lifting the textbook from the bed to the desk and leaving it open before turning off the lamp and exiting the room. Skye was next, May had been surprised that she hadn't heard a single sound form the girl since 8:30pm but she wasn't expecting what she found. Opening the door carefully she noticed the empty bed, she quickly looked around the room before she noticed a little foot poking out of the side of the bed. May crouched down to peer under the bed and let go of a breath she didn't realise she was holding. There she was the little girl that she had tucked into bed last night now sleeping, what seemed to be peacefully with her thumb in her mouth, under the bed. Once again May quietly exited the room before heading towards Jemma and Leo's rooms. The twins would often be working on a project together and bickering until they went to bed. Sometimes they'd even be up past bed time to finish what they had started, that's what they had done last night. To Mays surprise the twins were up and at it in Jemma's room.

"Good morning" May said just loud enough for the twins to hear from the doorway.

"G'morning mom, no Jemma it does work like that, it need to go this way!" Leo stated after acknowledging their mom.

"Morning mom. We tried it that way last night Fitz! I didn't work!" Jemma responded.

"You two are up early." May continued.

"We're trying to solve this little problem we have with our project. A minor default but we only have a week left before the project is due in" Jemma replied and Fitz just nodded.

"Okay, well I'm off to do some tai chi. Dad should be awake soon to start breakfast. And please try keep the noise down. Skye and Bobbi are still sleeping" May requested as the twins nodded in response.

By 6:30am May had completed her tai chi routine, showered and got dressed as Phil made his way to start making breakfast. His signature dish, chocolate chip pancakes and bacon, the kids loved it. Once May was completely dressed and ready for the day she made a quick stop at Bobbi's room to make sure the grumpy teen was awake.

"Hey mom" Bobbi said with a sleepy smile.

"Hey Bobbi, you gonna get ready for school or just lay in bed all day?" May asked as she watched Bobbi roll out of bed. Satisfies that Bobbi was now up and getting ready she turned to Skye's room. She opened the door to see the little girl, who looked to be sleeping, actually on the bed.

"You're good at that." May said as the little girl peeked at her trying to keep her eyes as closed as possible. "I can see you peeking" May said with a smile on her face.

Skye made a small grumble before rubbing her eyes and sitting up. She looked at May nervously and gave a week smile before saying "g'mornin" and pushing the covers off herself.

"Good morning honey, you wanna come get some breakfast?" May asked offering a hand out for Skye to take. Skye hesitated before wrapping her pinky around May's which May saw as a small success.

The amazing smell of chocolate chip pancakes filled the house, shortly followed by the sound of happy children chatting at the dinner table. It was a sensation that Skye wasn't used to feeling, happy and content with the joyfulness of this family. They were all genuinely happy it wasn't a pretend happy that Skye was so used to. Again though she didn't want to say the wrong thing so she just listened to the conversations going on and didn't add anything to it, that was until May mentioned going shopping to get her some new clothes.

"S'okay, I don't need new clothes. You don't have to spend money on me" Skye said plainly.

"We want to spend money on you honey" Phil said calmly a little shocked.

"Okay" Skye replied not wanting to sound ungrateful or to seem argumentative.

By the time breakfast was finished Phil had all the kids and May piled into the car heading towards the school. They had decided that it would be easier to go shopping straight after dropping the older kids off and it would most likely be calmer at this time in the morning.

The closer they got to the mall the more nervous Skye became, she hated overly crowded places she also hated the idea of getting separated from May and Phil and being left behind and forgotten about. I mean it wouldn't be the first time she had been left in a mall. As they pulled into the parking lot Skye noticed how many cars were, to her surprise there wasn't that many.

Target seemed like a good place to start, they'd have most of the basics Skye would need. As they entered the store they headed straight for the clothing sections.

"You can pick out anything you like." May said hoping that Skye would ease up and pick out the clothing that she actually wanted instead of May having to pick items out for her.

After a couple of minutes Skye shuffled over to the brightly coloured multi pack of T-shirts she pointed to them and May picked out the correct size for Skye. It only took roughly 30 minutes for Skye to have a full new wardrobe of cloths that would actually fit her. By the time they were ready to checkout Skye had ten brightly coloured T-shirt's, four hoodies, five pairs of jeans, three pairs of jogging bottoms, two skirts, a denim jacket, a coat, a pair of sneakers, a pair of Mary Janes, twenty pairs of underwear, ten pairs of socks, three pairs of tights, five pairs of pyjamas and three night dresses. Half way through picking items of clothing she noticed how full the cart was and refused to add anything else to it even though May said she needed all this stuff. So instead May used the things Skye had picked as an interest baseline and picked out everything else she'd need.

On the car journey home Phil had mentioned to Skye about how on Monday they would be going to enrol her in the local school. To which Skye nodded, it has been a while since she had been in a school environment with her being expelled from her last one. She didn't really like school but she wasn't going to argue that. Not yet at least.

The rest of the day went as smooth as normal, and Skye had begun getting closer to the others. She actually sat and spoke to them whilst they were waiting for dinner. It was nice to see Skye settling in and becoming more comfortable within the family, however May noticed that the young girl was far too well behaved for a girl of five years. She couldn't help but wonder when the other show would drop. She was waiting for the inevitable tantrum or the argumentative attitude. She remembered when Bobbi first came to live with them how she was so well behaved until she was settled and then she started pushing the boundaries. Testing the waters was something all three kids did at one point or another and she knew that it would most likely happen sooner or later with her youngest, the question was when.
