Santiago took a deep breath and paused outside their apartment door, clutching a bouquet of his girlfriend's favourite flowers in his hands. He knew he shouldn't be nervous, but he was. He hated when she was upset, especially with him.
He grabbed his keys from his pocket and unlocked the door, making sure he shut it quietly, she hated it when he let the front door slam on its own.
'Here goes nothing', he thought as he called out, 'Britt?'
'In the kitchen babe', she replied.
'Oh she sounds a bit better' he thought, 'maybe talking to Quinn helped'.
He put his gym bag down on the floor, kicking his shoes off and walked into the kitchen. The sound of the plastic wrapping of the flowers he was holding in his hands caught Brittany's attention before he had a chance to say anything.
She spun round on her heels to face him. The first thing she saw was the bunch of bright pink tulip held tightly in his grasp. The second was the look on his face, sort of concerned yet loving at the same time.
He smiled at her and stepped closer to her, 'I got these for you', he said quietly.
'Thank you, they're beautiful.'
'Not as beautiful as you', he flirted back.
Brittany's stomach fluttered and her heart skipped at that. Even after all this time he still knew how to make her blush and give her butterflies. She glanced up at him, he was smiling softly at her, reaching out to hand her the flowers. She took them from him, their hands gently brushing past each other as she did.
Santiago watched as his girlfriend turned around to get the vase they use for flowers from behind the sink.
'How was Quinn?' he asked.
'She's good. Was nice to see her. Things are better with her and Puck you know? Have you spoken to him much about it all?' she replied.
He had in fact had a chat with Puck a couple days ago about how things were between him and Quinn. It had been difficult the past few months, Puck was Santiago's best mate and the two couples used to do everything together. Ever since they split it's been difficult to make sure they support both Puck and Quinn individually and not to take sides. Things are looking better though. Give it time and they'll be back together. They just can't stay away from each other really.
He nodded in response to her question, 'Yeah I called him the other day. He's doing alright'.
Brittany nodded, 'That's good', she said quietly.
He watched his girlfriend walk around the kitchen slowly just tidying up and putting things away. He knew she wasn't going to say anything about why she was upset earlier unless he asked her. 'Right' he thought to himself, 'let's work out what's up with my girl'.
Brittany was standing with her back to him, wiping the table with a cloth when suddenly she felt herself lifted off the ground and thrown over her boyfriend's shoulder.
'SAN!' she yelled, 'what are you doing? You're going to drop me oh my God San put me down!'
'Nope. Not happening. We are going to sit in our spot and you're going to tell me what's wrong', he said.
Brittany was momentarily distracted by how strong her boyfriend was and swooned slightly at the feeling it gave her. Even though she was thrown over his shoulder he was still holding her as tightly as possible but as gentle as ever. It was such a comforting feeling and instantly made her relax into his embrace a bit more.
The couple had nicknamed the balcony 'their spot' ever since they moved into the apartment. They had decorated it with a soft fluffy rug, white fairy lights and a couple of matching beanbags. There was a box with extra pillows and blankets too for the nights when they would sit out and talk till the early hours of the morning.
Brittany was pulled from her daydream as she was tossed playfully onto one of the beanbags on the balcony. Santiago reached into the box and pulled out a fluffy blanket before moving his beanbag right next to hers and sitting down on it. He pulled her close into him and she curled into his chest. He wrapped his strong arms around her and kissed the top of her head.
'We're not moving till you tell me what was bothering you this morning. I don't care how long it takes. If you don't want to talk about it yet then that's ok, but I'm going to sit here with you until you're ready okay?', he said looking down at her.
Brittany nodded, slightly stunned at his actions. She knew she needed to talk to him, but also wanted to take him up on his offer of just sitting quietly for a bit.
'Can we just sit here for a bit first?', she asked.
She felt him squeeze her tighter for a second and pull her closer to him, 'Anything you want baby. For as long as you want'.
God she loved him so much.
Around 45 minutes had passed since they had last spoken to each other. They were still cuddled into each other though, Brittany was now basically sat in his lap as her boyfriend gently stroked up and down her back with one hand and raked his fingers through her hair with the other, scratching at her scalp every now and then.
'San?'
He hummed to let her know he was listening.
'If I tell you what was wrong do you promise you won't freak out?'
'I promise', he said.
Brittany took a deep breath before she continued.
'I – I thought that.. no I wanted to – wait I just. Ok look I-' she kept stopping and starting.
'Britt', he stopped her, 'take a breath and try again. It's just me, I'm not going anywhere, just take your time'.
She tried again, deep breath in and out. 'Here goes nothing' she thought.
'I thought you would ask me to marry you. You know, for our anniversary? It's our 5 year and I just thought maybe you'd propose', she blurted out before quickly clamping her hand over her mouth and going red. She squeezed her eyes shut. She couldn't believe she had just said that to him.
Meanwhile Santiago hadn't said a word. He just looked at his girlfriend wondering why on earth she was panicking about this so much.
There was silence for about a minute before Santiago decided to say something. Brittany still had her head buried in her hands not looking at him.
'Britt?' he tried.
Nothing.
'Britt?' he said again.
Still nothing.
'Brittany will you look at me!' he said louder, 'Please?', he added more gently.
'Oh God now look what I've done he's so annoyed with me I knew I shouldn't have said anything', Brittany thought to herself, tears threatening to spill from her eyes. She tried but she couldn't look at him. She'd just screwed up the best thing in her life. Why did she have to be so stupid?
Santiago watched his girlfriend become increasingly panicked and felt her breathing start to pick up.
He tried again.
Leaning down so his lips were next to her left ear he whispered, 'Brittany sweetheart, relax for me please? Just calm down honey. It's ok. I promise. I'm not mad or anything. Just look at me baby please'.
He instantly felt her relax as his hand gently stroked her back, rubbing circles at the base of her neck.
After a minute of focusing on calming herself down she sat up a bit and looked at her boyfriend.
He was just sat there, still holding her, the same concerned but loving look on his face life before, but this time he was smiling slightly.
She was so confused. She thought he was going to be so mad at her for even thinking about this. They are still so young and just starting out in their jobs, obviously it's not the right time to think about getting married.
'Tell me again', he said.
'Huh?' she stared at him.
'Tell me again. What you just said'.
She paused, unsure of what was going on.
'I uh-um I thought you were going to propose for our anniversary'.
He nodded and hummed, then smiled at her, a glint in his eye.
'And when's our anniversary babe?', he asked.
'Not for another month', she said.
He nodded again.
'Well then. I don't know what you're so upset about. Who said I wasn't planning on doing that all along?' he smirked.
'What?' she asked, in slight disbelief as to how well this conversation was going.
'Babe, you asked me this morning if I had any plans. Now if I had some really big exciting plans that I wanted to surprise you with do you really think I would tell you what they were?', he asked.
'No no course not', she said.
'Exactly', he smiled, 'So I don't know what you're so worried about baby. You've got no idea what I've got planned for us', he said before kissing her on the cheek and winking. He then tapped her on the arm, 'Gotta go pee babe, back in a sec', and got up, leaving Brittany sat there, jaw dropped, slightly shocked but giddy at what had just happened.
