Chapter 9: Ruby and Yang

It was the day of the Selection announcement, and Ruby Rose could hardly sit still. She fidgeted in her seat, her leg bouncing up and down, and, every thirty seconds, she dashed to the kitchen to check on the chocolate chip cookies she had placed in the oven.

"Kiddo, calm down," her uncle complained, "you're making me anxious just looking at you..."

"How can I calm down?" Ruby screeched. "This is the most exciting day of my life. I'm going to be a Huntress!"

"We're going to be Huntresses," Yang corrected, grinning.

Taiyang looked at both of his girls, the nervousness thick on his face. He glanced at his brother-in-law for support, but Qrow was immersed in his drink. "You know, girls, if you aren't Selected, it's not the end of the world,"

Yang snorted. "Oh, come on, Dad. Ruby and I are shoo-ins. Her essay was about a scythe, and my profile picture was of Zwei."

Qrow choked on his drink, coughing violently. Taiyang gaped at his daughter. "What- you- Yang, you sent pictures of Zwei as your profile?"

"What? Most of my pictures are post-fight where I'm missing a few teeth or have my hair on fire. I don't want the prince to think I'm crazy or something,"

"You know, she's not wrong," Ruby agreed.

"Right, but-"

"Ladies and Gentlemen," Peter Port announced from the television in his booming voice.

"Zwei is-"

"QUIET!" shrieked Ruby.

"The moment you've all been waiting for has arrived."

Dr. Oobleck pushed up his glasses. "Yes, Peter, it is most exciting that we are all gathered here today to announce the preliminary fourteen girls that have been chosen by Prince Jaune to attend the Selection."

"Ladies… hold onto your seats," Port said with a wink.

Neither of the girls in the Xiao-Long-Rose residence took his advice. Ruby was standing right in front of the television, bouncing on the balls of her feet, and Yang was sprawled out on the floor like a starfish.

"Our first contestant: Lady Coco Adel of Vale. Two."

A picture of a sunglass-wearing, brunette girl flashed across the screen.

"Lady Weiss Schnee of Atlas. Two."

Coco was replaced with a picture of a white-haired girl with impeccable posture and a stern look. Ruby's heart skipped a beat.

"Lady Penny Polendina of Atlas. Three."

An orange-haired girl with a cute smile replaced Weiss.

"Lady Pyrrha Nikos of Mistral. Three."

"OOOOOOH they're almost to five!" Ruby squealed as a girl with long, red hair and striking green eyes came on screen.

"Lady Reese Chloris of Mistral. Four."

Taiyang sighed. "Ruby, I want you to know that no matter what happens-"

"Shut up, Dad, I'm trying to listen!"

"Lady Neon Katt of Atlas. Four."

"Kiddo, if you aren't selected, that doesn't mean you can't still fight," Qrow pointed out, finally taking the note from Tai's sharp look. "There's plenty of Grimm that bother us on Patch, and I'll always be here to teach you-"

"Lady Ruby Rose of Vale. Five."

Ruby let out a high pitched scream at the announcement of her name. Qrow dropped his drink in shock, and Tai leapt out of his seat. "That's amazing!" he cried.

Yang grinned. "Way to win one for Patch, Rubes-"

"Lady Yang Xiao Long of Vale. Five."

"WHAT?!" Yang demanded, sitting bolt upright.

Qrow and Tai looked at her in shock. Qrow actually laughed. "What did that little firecracker put in her application to get accepted to go to the palace?" he wondered, astounded.

"Yang," Tai started. "That's… that's amazing, that's-"

"YAYYYYYYYY!" Ruby cried, bursting into rose petals and crashing into Yang, knocking her back to the ground. "Yang's gonna be a Huntress! Yang's gonna be a Huntress! Yang's gonna be a Huntress!" she squealed, and Yang, once the shock had worn off, joined in the chant.

"Ruby's gonna be a Huntress! Ruby's gonna be a Huntress! Ruby's gonna be a Huntress!" she sang as she jumped up and down in circles with her sister. Soon, Zwei joined in, barking happily and prancing around in the middle of their screaming circle of excitement.

Qrow and Tai looked on in disbelief.

"Huh," Qrow chuckled after several minutes of shocked silence between the two. He glanced at Tai, "someone's got good genes…"
