Oh hey look at that, I'm actually typing this right after I posted the last chapter. Hopefully I don't procrastinate on this, that would be nice wouldn't it be hmm me? Anyways I hope you enjoy the chapter.
Chapter Eight: Players and Pieces Part Two
The dull roar of conversation is silenced by the sound of a microphone being turned on. "Thank you all for waiting," says Ozpin as a spotlight is turned on him, "I will now begin to announce teams. Would the following students come on stage…" he begins.
"Hey I haven't seen Gaster since the test, you know where he is?" asks Ruby as she tries to look over the crowd around her.
"Nah but how could he be so hard to find for a six foot something guy in a cloak?" replied Yang as she looked around as well.
"Would you two stop making so much noise, some people are still trying to hear what Professor Ozpin is saying." Weiss says as she tugs the siblings back into their seats, "You're also blocking peoples view."
"Fine Ice Queen." retorts Yang as she crosses her arms while she leans back in her seat.
"What did you just call me?"
"Ice Queen? Cuz ya know matches your personality." casually replies Yang. Before the heiress gets a chance to reply the crowd erupts in clapping and cheers.
"Russel Thrush, Cardin Winchester, Dove Bronzewing, and Sky Lark." announces Ozpin as the screen above the stage shows each of the boys profiles as the boys walk on stage, the audience applauds as the boys stand before Ozpin. "The four of you retrieved the black bishop pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as Team CRDL, lead by… Cardin Winchester!" The audience gives a wave of applause and cheers as they walk off stage. "Jaune Arc, Lie Ren, Pyrrha Nikos, and Nora Valkyrie," calls Ozpin as the four arrive onstage followed by an uproar from the crowd, "The four of you retrieved the white rook pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as Team JNPR." As the auditorium is filled with the sound of clapping Nora laughs and hugs Ren. "Led by… Jaune Arc!"
"Huh? L-Led by..?" questions Jaune.
"Congratulations, young man." is all Ozpin gives as a reply. Pyrrha smiles and gives Jaune a light punch in the shoulder which knocks him over on his butt causing the audience to laugh. "And finally: Blake Belladonna, Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee and Yang Xiao Long." The four arrive on stage and stand before him. "The four of you retrieved the white knight pieces. From This day forward, you will work together as Team RWBY. Led by… Ruby Rose!" he announces as Weiss looks bewildered towards Ruby who is shocked at the outcome. Yang gets Ruby in a bear hug.
"I'm so proud of you!" says Yang as she almost crushes Ruby.
"There is one more team that couldn't attend due to wounds they suffered during their time in the Emerald Forest, they will be announced at a later date," he says as he adjusts his glasses, "It looks like things are shaping up to be an… interesting year."
[Later]
"Glynda, I need you to get four scrolls for one of the new teams." says Ozpin as he walks to the school library.
"The one that couldn't attend due to their wounds?" asks Glynda as she walks besides him, "although there was no footage of a team being harmed in any serious manner." She adds this while looking through the footage of the team trial.
"I made that up as an excuse."
"What do you mean, made up as an excuse?" asks Glynda, bewildered as she comes to a stop.
"You'll understand when you see them, now then the scrolls?" insists Ozpin as he stops to look at her.
"Very well, Ozpin." replies an annoyed Glynda as she begins to peel off to fetch the scrolls.
"Also tell the Port and Oobleck to meet me outside of the dormitories in an hour."
"Will do sir." calls Glynda as she taps her own scroll while walking away. Ozpin continues his march to the library through the empty halls.
"What would they need to know," ponders Ozpin as he enters the library, "Let us start with the basics then." He begins looking through the history section and pulls a large tome from the shelves.
[Outside the dormitories]
"Ozpin, why have you called us out here at such a late time?" questions a slightly portly man in a burgundy suit as he stifles a yawn.
"I apologise Peter but this would be the best time to do this." replies Ozpin as he adjusts his grip on the books held under his arm.
"And what exactly is this?" asks a man with messy green hair, a yellow tie hung loosely around his neck accompanied by an mostly untucked white dress shirt.
"Bartholomew, we are going to see some… interesting students that couldn't attend the team assembly." answers the head master as he turns to look at him. "Now then follow me." Ozpin turns and heads into the large building before them trailed by Glynda. The two teachers look towards each other silently questioning Ozpin before they lightly shrug and follow the man inside.
The darkened halls were silent as their footsteps echoed off the walls. "Glynda, do you have the scrolls with you?" asks Ozpin while leading the group down the corridors.
"Yes sir."
"Good." hums Ozpin as he continues walking, taking a sharp turn around a corner before stopping before a door with a blank name plate. "Here we are," he says before turning to the others, "Please wait here for just a moment." He then procures a key out of his pocket and knocks lightly on the door and puts the key into the lock.
A knock pulls Gaster from his rest as the door unlocks. He sits up as it opens then shuts behind someone. {Hello?} mumbles the ex Royal Scientist as he blinks his sockets a few times.
"Hello Gaster," replies a familiar voice from the darkened room, "I am turning on the light now." A click is heard as Gaster's sockets are bombarded with the white light. He winces in pain as he squeezes his eyes shut before blinking to adjust to the brightness. A pair of groans are heard as Frisk and Papyrus block the invasive light from their eyes.
"NYEH. IS IT MORNING ALREADY?" grumbles the skeleton in a rather loud whisper. He sits up and rubs his face before noticing Ozpin in the room. "OH, HELLO PROFESSOR. WHY ARE YOU HERE?"
"yeah prof, why ya here this late?" echoes Sans without even opening his eyes causing Papyrus to jump a little. Papyrus glares at Sans before accepting the fact that he is awake, before looking to Ozpin for an answer.
"I am here to have some of the other faculty members meet you. I figured now would be better than tomorrow after class." he explained as Frisk sits up as well, half of their normally fluffy hair flattened. They rub their eyes before giving a sleepy wave to the headmaster who follows suit. "Now then the other teachers are outside in the hall. They will most likely react differently then how I did, so I would like to introduce you one at a time starting with Frisk."
"WHY IS THAT?" inquires Papyrus while raising his hand.
"prolly cuz frisk is human unlike us." replies Sans while standing at the foot of his bed. "well i might as well get out of your hair." he says with a shrug before he turns to a door next to the bed, he then casually walks in and shuts the door behind him.
"Is he aware that he just walked into the closest?" questions Ozpin as he tilts his head slightly.
Frisk looks at Ozpin and shrugs before holding their palms up and waving their hands in a teeter totter motion. (Probably)
Ozpin gives them a questioning look before Papyrus sighs. "HE DOES THIS THING WHERE HE WALKS OUT OF SIGHT JUST TO SHOW UP SOMEWHERE ELSE, HE CALLS IT A 'SHORTCUT'."
"So he has the ability to teleport?"
"basically." calls out Sans, his voice echoing from the bathroom.
A knock is heard from the door as Ozpin turns towards it. "Just a moment longer Glynda." He turns to the remaining Monsters, "Would you please follow Sans' example and gather in the bathroom?" Gaster and Papyrus agree and make their way into the bathroom, closing the door behind them.
Ozpin adjusts his glasses before opening the door, "Now then Glynda, Port, Oobleck this is one of the new students." He leads the three faculty members into the room then shuts the door behind them. "This is Frisk, they will be attending your classes starting tomorrow." Frisk gives a small grin as they wave to the teachers.
"They seem a tad young for a Huntsman in training." Professor Port points out as he returns the wave.
"Yes they do Ozpin," agrees Glynda as she shoots a glare at the headmaster, "How old are you?"
Frisk, noticing the passive aggressive tone in her voice, looks down sheepishly before holding a thumb up, balling their hand then flashing their thumb, index and middle fingers. (Thirteen.)
Glynda looks confused at this gesture and turns to Ozpin as he hums knowingly, "What was that?"
"They said they were thirteen," he calmly states, "They use a form of sign language close to our own."
Glynda is fuming at this, she begins shaking in anger before she stops and takes a deep breath. "So Ozpin first a sixteen year old and now a thirteen year old child?" she asks with the facade of a smile. Frisk pouts slightly when called a child and is marginally insulted.
"heh, that's the least of your worries." calls a voice from deeper in the dorm.
"Who was that?" questions Doctor Oobleck as he takes a step forward.
"That was another one of new the students." he says as he steps around Glynda, she stares him down as he does so. "They are… a bit different that is why they couldn't attend the ceremony," he stands before Oobleck, "They aren't exactly from around here or Remnant."
Glynda's eye twitches before she mutters one word through gritted teeth. "What?"
"You will understand when you see them," assures Ozpin, "Sans would you please come out here."
"sure thing prof." says the short skeleton walking out of the closet.
"SANS STOP DOING THAT." calls out a voice from the bathroom. Sans shrugs at this before putting his hands back into his coat pockets.
The teachers had varied reactions to the Monster before them. Port raises his brow at the skeleton, questioning the functionality of such a creature. Oobleck looks down towards Sans with an intrigued expression. Glynda on the other hand instinctively reaches for her riding crop.
"Glynda there is no need for that." says Ozpin trying to de-escalate the situation.
"Ozpin, that is a talking skeleton."
"Yes, I am aware of his existence." responds the headmaster adding no room for argument.
"And you two are fine with this?" asks Glynda as she turns to look at the other teachers.
"I'm still attempting to figure out how it would plausibly function."
"I can agree with Peter on this, they are an anomaly of biology. Unless there are organs under the clothing then I cannot find any reasonable solution to their inner workings." explains Oobleck. The trio's attention is turned to Ozpin as he clears his throat.
"Ahem, as I was saying. There are two more students. Papyrus, please come out here." The door to the bathroom opens to reveal a taller skeleton wearing a homemade suit of 'armor'. The skeleton looks to the teacher with a child-like wonder before they calm themselves.
"H-HELLO, I AM THE GREAT PAPYRUS. ROYAL GUARDSMAN IN TRAINING.. OR WELL WAS. I DON'T THINK THE ROYAL GUARD STATUS APPLIES HERE…" says papyrus as he introduces himself before standing next to his brother.
"And finally Gaster." Ozpin motions his hand towards the bathroom once more as a taller skeletal Monster steps forth and presents himself with a short bow.
{Hello, I am W.D. Gaster although most call me Gaster for short.} he finishes as he comes up from his bow. He looks up to meet the gaze of Glynda Goodwitch as she trembles with more vigor, almost turning red as she does so.
"Glynda I-" begins Ozpin before being quickly silenced by her riding crop.
"Don't 'Glynda' me, Ozpin." she threatens in a hushed tone, "First children and now three living skeletons!" She pushes her preferred weapon of choice against Ozpin's chest before an 'ahem' stops her from ripping him a new one. They both turn to look at Professor Port as he adjusts his suit coat.
"If we may get back on to the topic of these three," he says this while motioning to the Monsters present, "How are we going to plausibly implement them into classes without raising suspicions or even worse causing panic?" Glynda steps back with a thoughtful look as she rests her chin on the back of her hand.
Frisk tugs gently on the pondering staff members sleeve, gaining her attention they begin to sign. They raise both palms up before making a flattened 'O' shape with their left hand and circling around the tips with the opposing index finger before pausing briefly to think. They then place their fingertips on their chest and does a pulsing motion with their hands then making two 'V' shapes with their index and middle fingers with their thumb placed in between before doing a petalling motion with their arms.
"Can someone translate them for me?" asks Glynda as she looks towards Ozpin before Gaster chimes in.
{To roughly translate it they said 'what about animal people' which I presume they are referring to the Faunus.} he estimates as he turns to Glynda.
"Well yes that could work, although with your… unique appearances that will make it difficult." says Professor Oobleck as he adjusts his glasses, "Though with that route there will be the potential subjugation by other students…" He continues to mutter other pros and cons of said idea as Gaster internally groans.
{Great, Humans are still the same even in an entirely new world.}
"The concept could work with most of you except for you Papyrus." states Ozpin as he looks between the three Monsters. "Unlike Sans and Gaster, your skull is more skeleton-like in appearance, which would be a blatant give away."
"OH…" mutters Papyrus as he looks down before quickly looking back up, "WAIT! I CAN WRAP MY SCARF AROUND MY HEAD LIKE THIS AND YOU CAN'T TELL RIGHT?" He excitedly offers as he covers most of his head except his eyes.
"i mean seems sound to me bro." comments Sans with a shrug.
"We could commission a helmet or another head covering for you," ponders Ozpin before turning to Glynda, "very well, we shall go with that. Oh yes before I forget, Glynda, the Scrolls."
She begrudgingly complies before pulling three thin, white metal objects with a yellow rhombus in the center from a well hidden pocket and hands them over to Ozpin. He then turns to the four students and hands them one each.
"These are Scrolls, they allow long distance communication and access to the Cross Continental Transmit System. Along with those functions you can see your current level of aura and allies."
"oh so a phone?" says Sans as he flips the device through his boney knuckles.
"Yes you could call them a 'phone'," replies Ozpin slightly puzzled before moving on, "to open them press the yellow button and it will expand. Along with those you will need to do some studying to be caught up with classes." He motions to the pile of books near the door before continuing. "The main topics you'll need to study are Remnant's history and the Grimm, that will be all. I shall return later tomorrow to discuss other topics." He then escorts the other teachers out while the group tinkers with their new Scrolls.
Is it just me or did that 'week' feel long? Jokes aside, apologise for taking so long. Online school is a pain and takes up most of my time.
And for Chara, that's a spoiler. ;)
Hopefully most of you are still with me. Well then I already have a fair bit of Chapter 9 done so expect that soon. Like actually soon not "a week" soon.
