Amelia made it to the medjacks hut in time to see the girl bolt from her bed and to the door, she faltered slightly at the sight of another girl but when she looked behind Amelia at the sea of male faces she pushed past them all and pelted full force to the safest point she could see, the lookout point, but not before grabbing a tub full of tomato's Zart had placed on the ground in his hurry to see what was going on. Amelia turned to Clint.
"Go get Thomas and Minho, maybe she'll listen to Thomas." The girl was now stood at the top of the lookout throwing down tomato's at the Gladers below, Amelia ran over and hid with Newt underneath a small pallet of wood. She heard Chuck proclaiming his love for girls as he pointed Thomas towards the scene of flying vegetables. Amelia had to hold in a laugh as Gally got hit full in the face with a tomato as he yelled at the new girl. Thomas joined them asking what had happened.
"I don't think she likes us very much." Newt sniggered.
"Stop, STOP, its Thomas." Thomas yelled as he covered his head from the falling veg. It amazingly seemed to work and the girl stopped her attack and peered over the side of the lookout.
"I'm coming up! Alone." He added as Gally made to follow him. Amelia, Newt, Gally and Minho all waited at the bottom, a few minutes past and neither the attack of veg or Thomas had re-emerged.
"How's it going up there?" Newt eventually called up. Thomas's head popped over the side.
"Just give us a minute." He responded politely.
"Right." Newt frowned slightly.
"Come on guys shows over, back to work." Amelia ushered the last of the Gladers away.
"I hope all girls are this fun." Chuck laughed walking behind them.
"Saying I'm not Chuckles?" Amelia turned walking backwards.
"I forget you're a girl though." Chuck said bashfully. Amelia scoffed.
"Thanks a lot mate!"
"Don't worry Ames, we all know you're a girl, he's too young to be aware of some of the things that make it very hard to forget." Minho winked at her earning him a thump to the stomach from Newt. "Hey man I was trying to be nice!"
"No you weren't you shucking perv." Newt good-naturedly hit him again. Minho pouted and flung an arm around Amelia's shoulders.
"Ames your boyfriend hurt my stomach can you rub it better please?" She rolled her eyes and shrugged his arm off her shoulders making him pout further before winking.
"Wait," Chuck looked confused, "Newt's your boyfriend?" Looking between Newt and Amelia scratching his head. Minho looked at the pair of them as well and they simultaneously started laughing.
"Don't worry Chuck, we'll explain when you're older." Amelia ruffled Chuck's hair and he grumbled something about never being told anything.
The playful moment was interrupted by the reappearance of Thomas and the girl who looked a bit sheepish about her earlier display of tomato aggression.
"This is Theresa." They smiled at the girl, although the boys still eyed her uneasily. "She came up with something in her pocket, we think it might be to help Alby." He held out two syringes of blue liquid, and without waiting for them started walked into the medjacks hut.
"Wait Thomas!" Newt called to him, "We don't know what this could do to him, it could kill him."
"He's dying anyway Newt, this could be our chance to save him." Thomas responded.
"He's right Newt, no ones ever survived a Griever sting, its worth a shot, otherwise we've lost him anyway." Amelia's voice cut through the tension and Newt nodded at her. Alby suddenly lurched up and caught sight of Thomas by his bed.
"THIS IS YOUR FAULT THOMAS, WHY ARE YOU HERE." He roared and started to thrash violently against the restraints Jeff had thankfully just put around him. Theresa grabbed one of the syringes from Thomas's hands as the others held Alby down, and plunged it into the boys dark chest. The effect was immediate, Alby's breathing shallowed and he calmed down to a deep sleep. Amelia took a cloth from the basin besides him and delicately wiped her friends face free of the sweat he had built up in his struggle. Newt's hand found its way onto her shoulder and squeezed gently. A knock sounded on the door and they looked up to see Gally enter.
"Sundown greenie." Amelia nodded at Thomas to go with the builder, she and Gally may not see eye to eye on Thomas but she did agree that the boy needed to be punished, if nothing else just to remind him that sometimes erratic actions had consequences. Dinner was a subdued affair that evening, Amelia had been dragged from Alby's bedside by a insistent Newt and forced to eat something. She noticed Chuck sneaking out with half a baguette tucked up his sleeve, she smiled at the kindness of the young Glader and would not tell him off for breaking the rules to feed Thomas. Following dinner Newt had gone to help Frypan tidy up and Amelia had sought out the only other female in the glade. She found Theresa at the top of the lookout again and made her way up.
"Is it safe to come up?" She asked poking her head through the ladder hole. "Or are you armed with tomato's again?" Theresa laughed and patted the ground next to her, Amelia took the gesture as a good sign and sat next to her.
"How are you coping?"
"Do you mean how am I doing about having no memory other than my own name and that of some random boys? Or do you mean how am I doing about being suddenly catapulted up into a maze with thirty odd boys and only one other girl? Or do you mean how I am doing about the fact that I've not exactly received a warm welcome?" There was no malice in the girls voice Amelia noted, she meant no harm by her words.
"All of the above I guess, but I can only apologise for the welcome you've had. We're normally a lot nicer than this, but what with Thomas causing no end of trouble and Alby getting hurt we're rather had a lot on our plates." Theresa nodded understandingly at this. "Its weird for them as well, seeing a girl, they've sort of got used to me. I was the first one up, so I've just been a fixture in the glade for as long as they've all been here. You however, you're new."
"You were here first?" Theresa asked curiously.
"Yeah, one whole month on my own." Theresa gasped. "It wasn't so bad, thankfully didn't run into a Griever, that's those creatures everyone's going on about, they roam the maze and pack a nasty sting. But I was never happier than when I opened the box and saw Alby in it."
"You must be worried about him."
"He was my only companion for a whole month, we have a connection he and I. He's like my big brother, I know he can't be for obvious reasons like appearance and our accents couldn't be more different, but he's the closest to family I've got. All of them are actually."
"Even Gally?"
"Even Gally." Amelia grinned at the girl. "He's a softy really I know that's hard to believe. But he cares about us all dearly, he just doesn't cope very well with change."
"Do you think we'll ever get out of here?"
"If you'd have asked me that a few weeks ago honestly I don't know what I'd have told you. But I have this strange feeling, and I know Newt and Minho have as well, that Thomas is our way out of here."
"I trust him. I don't know why, I don't even know why I knew his name, but I know I trust him completely."
"Maybe you and him were… you know…" Amelia winked at her and Theresa blushed violently.
"Shut up Amy." She shoved Amelia's shoulder playfully. A strange look past over both girls faces as if sensing a connection.
"Amy huh? Feels familiar actually, everyone calls me Ames. Although I do get Amy-Wamey from Alby and Minho but that's just to wind me up."
"I dunno why I said it, just felt right, I would imagine we probably all knew each other before the maze, the fact I knew Thomas's name was pretty much proof of that."
"Come on then Theresa, lets get you to bed, we've put you in Alby's room tonight, but you'll be sleeping next to Thomas from tomorrow when he's out the slammer, he'll protect you from all these scary boys." Theresa laughed loudly and shoved Amelia again. Amelia showed her to Alby's room before joining Newt in their own proudly declaring that she was alright at girl talk.
