Out of the Woods
It didn't take long for the news to spread around town. Victoria Argent had passed away the night before. Allison had lost her mother. No one knew why she had died, but everyone felt terrible for Allison. It also hit pretty close to home for the Stilinski twins as they had lost their mother when they were younger. So it wasn't too much of a surprise when Stiles found his sister curled up in her bed hugging her white cat. It was a stuffed animal that her mother had won her in a claw machine when she was a kid and she had cherished it ever since. He sighed softly and climbed onto the bed laying beside her. Sniffling slightly, she moved closer letting him hold her.
"I miss her so much. It's not fair! No one should have to lose their mom." She cried into her brother's green flannel shirt.
"I know. I miss her too." His tone was comforting as he held his sister letting her cry.
The funeral for Allison's mother was the next day and though it was a private family funeral, her father had extended an invitation to the Stilinskis. The twins were close to Allison and Scarlet herself had spent numerous times visiting the Argent home. It also sadly helped that they knew what it was like to lose the matriarch of the family. The whole experience had an odd effect on the twins. It made Stiles want to keep his sister far away from all the wolf and kanima business while Scarlet felt the need to spend more time around their father. Though for now, she was supporting the Argents the best that she could.
Things slowly reverted back to normal or at least as normal as it could get in Beacon Hills. Allison seemed to withdraw from the group though Scarlet didn't exactly blame her. She had reacted in a similar way after the loss of her and Stiles' mother. She stayed true to her brother's wishes to stay out of the wolf and kanima business though she still remained a sounding board when they were trying to piece things together a few nights later. It was then that she learned that Matt Daehler was the master of the Kanima. She wasn't sure what to make of that, but she knew she'd do her best to avoid him from now on. It wasn't long after that discussion that Scarlet left the two boys alone in favor of meeting her father in his office for dinner. Everyone in the Sheriff's department was so used to seeing her or her brother in the building that they didn't bat an eye when she showed up.
"Yes, it's healthy food because Stiles would yell at me otherwise, but don't despair. I slipped in some curly fries too." The brunette smiled setting the food down on her father's desk.
The sheriff was concerned with how she was handling things lately, but was also relieved that she seemed to be doing fine at the moment. "It'll be our little secret."
"Deal." She grinned giggling slightly as she sat down to eat with him.
They mostly made small talk going over their respective days and whatnot. She felt guilty for keeping the truth about the wolves and the kanima away from him. Once they were done eating, she cleaned up and then started doing some filing for him. It was relatively silent until the sound of a gunshot pierced the air. The sheriff immediately went on alert and ushered his daughter under his desk as more shots could be heard.
He pressed a kiss to her head and sighed pulling out his gun. "Just stay here and be quiet. Everything will be fine, honey, I promise. I love you."
"I love you too, daddy." The fear was plain to see in her brown eyes as she curled up beneath his desk.
She could hear him walk out of the office shutting the door behind him. The gunshots seemingly stopped and she sighed in relief. Her eyes widened when she heard the click of the door opening and she froze. She could hear the footsteps making their way around her desk and she only relaxed when Scott's face appeared in front of her. Scarlet threw herself into his arms hugging him tightly. His arms instinctively wrapped around her waist holding her close to his chest.
"What's going on? What are you doing here?" She whispered pulling back slightly to look at him.
He reached out brushing her dark locks away from her face and whispered softly. "Matt's here with the Kanima."
"Just because you're a wolf doesn't make you invincible." She whispered back before letting him pull her up.
Scott sighed pulling her to her feet. "Come on, we have to get you out of here."
"But.." Scarlet trailed off as they walked out of her father's office quietly only to come face to face with the kanima itself.
"Nice of you to join us." Matt's voice rang out sending a chill down the girl's spine.
The kanima surprisingly let them walk by and Scott took her hand walking with her. It was then that she saw her brother lying on the ground beside Derek and she feared the worst until they looked up at her. Everything seemed to happen in a blur after that. Melissa was in a cell, the Sheriff was half knocked over, and suddenly Matt grabbed Scarlet. His fingertips trailed along her jawline as she trembled in fear in his arms. Her father reached for her and Matt hit him knocking him out cold. Scarlet gasped and Scott took that opportunity to pull her away from Matt. Amid the commotion, Matt's gun went off. Scott stumbled back and collapsed in the corner beside the cell that his mother was locked in. The crimson stain quickly began to soak through his shirt.
Panic was in his brown eyes as he looked from his mother who was pleading with Matt to get him some help to Scarlet who was now standing in front of him. "Scar, I can't..."
"Scott McCall, you listen to me and you listen to me now. You can and you will." She assured him with a somewhat calming tone.
He shook his head still unsure, but he couldn't control it. "I..I can't.. Mom..."
Scott was practically in panic mode and she did the only thing she could think to do to calm him down. Her lips pressed against his lips for a moment and then she pulled away. His eyes turned yellow and fangs protruded out of his mouth. A growl fell from his lips as the wound healed and the bullet slowly popped out into his hand. A mixed look of horror and confusion was apparent on Melissa's face. Another shot rang out and Matt's body fell limp to the floor. Standing above him with a literal smoking gun was Gerard Argent, Allison's grandfather. Scarlet foolishly believed the whole ordeal was over until she caught sight of Allison herself aiming an arrow at Derek's prone body. Allison's name flew out of her mouth in the form of a panicked yell before she could stop it. The brunette huntress paused glancing over at her friend as the girl made a beeline for where her brother and Derek lay.
"Allison, this isn't you." She spoke out blocking her friend's shot at Derek.
"He killed my mother." Her tone was cold as she continued to aim her arrow.
"You're not killing him, Allison." Scarlet stood her ground while her brother watched helplessly.
"Why? Why are you so quick to defend him? You of all people should understand where I'm coming from." Allison's tone took on an angry emotional edge.
"Because he's my boyfriend. Because I'm the one that killed her, not him. Because no matter how angry and hurt you are, killing him won't bring her back." She confessed oblivious to the fact that her father had regained consciousness.
"What? No..." She trailed off wavering as she lowered her crossbow a bit.
"Allison..." It was too late as she could only watch helplessly as the brunette ran off.
The Sheriff rubbed his head as he paced in his office a short while later. "I'm sorry, I must have heard wrong when I woke up from being knocked out. You didn't confess to murder and him being your boyfriend, right?"
"Dad..."
His hand slammed down onto his desk making her jump slightly. "Did you sleep with my daughter?"
"I really don't want to know the answer to that." Stiles groaned covering his eyes with his arm.
Derek shook his head looking over at the Sheriff. "No, sir."
This seemed to appease the Sheriff for a moment. "Good. Keep it that way."
"Dad!"
The Sheriff sighed pointing toward his daughter. "I don't want to hear it, Scarlet."
"Mom would have listened." Standing up, Scarlet stormed out of the office.
"For what it's worth, she didn't actually kill anybody. She just feels guilty because she thinks she could have saved Mrs. Argent." Stiles piped up just then.
While the two of them worked on breaking the news to the Sheriff about the wolves and stuff, Scarlet had stormed outside to the parking lot. Her anger faded away when she caught sight of a sad looking Scott leaning against Stiles' jeep.
"Scott..."
He shook his head sighing softly. "I'm fine. She hates me though."
"Your mother doesn't hate you. She's just scared and confused. You have to give her time to adjust. You know you're always welcome at our place." She reassured him.
Scott knew she was right, but the way his mother had looked at him still bugged the young wolf. "I know. By the way, what you told Allison, you didn't kill her mom."
"Yeah, but I might as well have. I knew Allison's dad was in the area that night. If I had told him, he would have stopped her or at least distracted her long enough for me to get you out of there. " Scarlet sighed running her hands over her face.
A slight chuckle fell from his lips as he draped his arm around her comfortingly. "That's your thing isn't it? Feeling guilty for things that weren't your fault."
The last person that Scarlet expected to see the next day was Allison, but to her surprise, the brunette huntress climbed into her room through the window. She was startled briefly wondering if her friend was going to kill her after her confession the day before. Instead Allison sat down on the end of the bed and sighed. She hesitantly sat down beside her curious as to what was going on.
"Before you say it, I know you were just trying to calm Scott down. I'm not mad at you. I just want to know the truth. I need to know. How did she die? Why?"
Scarlet took a deep breath and sighed softly.
"It was that night we were at the concert rave thing. She hit Scott with her car and dragged him off so I followed them. She took him to one of the empty rooms in one of the warehouses. Your mother filled the room with wolfsbane smoke while they were in there. She was going to kill him." The younger Stilinski started before shaking her head.
"It's okay. Keep going." She encouraged her.
"He let out this weak howl and Derek came out of nowhere. I ducked in after them and I struggled with her. That's what really happened to my shoulder. She stabbed me. I was able to get Scott out of there. From what I've been told, she tried to kill Derek. He bit her and then got out of there. She was alive when he left." She finished as her voice cracked a bit.
"I'm so sorry. I was just so overcome with grief and..my grandfather.."
"It's okay, Allison. I get it. He got to you when you were vulnerable. No one's mad at you." Scarlet assured her friend pulling her into a hug.
The pair cried then for themselves and for the loss of their mothers.
Scarlet distanced herself from the supernatural aspect of Beacon Hills in the weeks following, much to Stiles' relief. At least she tried to, anyway. She spent most of her time around Lydia and Allison. Though she would be lying if she said that she didn't spend time with Derek as well. She had helped him move into his new loft apartment and was still trying to find answers as to how Lydia was immune to the wolf bite. The last thing she expected was for Peter Hale to walk into the loft looking very much alive.
"Well hello Scarlet." Peter smirked softly at her.
Derek rolled his eyes not seeming at all surprised to see him. "Leave her alone."
"How... wait you knew?" She looked toward Derek in a mix of shock and confusion.
"Of course he knew. He's my nephew. As for how, well, your friend Lydia was quite a big help."
"What do you know about her?" Scarlet narrowed her eyes at the older Hale.
"Just that she is quite special. Not that many people are immune to the wolf's bite." Peter admitted to her.
Derek shook his head and sighed. "We're still not closer to figuring out why she was immune."
"It doesn't change the fact that he kidnapped me and you didn't even bother to admit that he was alive again." She gestured toward Peter.
He frowned at her. "Well he's not going to do it again. I'm sorry that I didn't tell you. I only just found out not that long ago myself."
"I know you're family, but I don't understand how you two could be so chummy right now when he nearly killed me." Scarlet huffed at her boyfriend.
"I knew I should have given you the bite." He chuckled softly.
Derek growled at his uncle. "Touch her and I'll rip your throat out again."
"You certainly have Claudia's spirit." Peter smiled at her.
"No. No, you do not get to say her name. Just.. no." She gestured at him then walked toward the door. "I need to go."
He sighed glaring at Peter before following her. "Wait. Let me at least drive you home."
"Thank you, but no. I'll be fine." Scarlet smiled slightly at Derek and then left the loft.
He turned and glared at his uncle. "You just had to open your big mouth."
"You really do care about her, huh?" Peter smirked softly at his nephew.
Derek huffed at him. "Yeah I do."
Scott's brows raised as she stormed into her brother's room. "Scar?"
"Well we have something to add to the board." She scribbled something down and pinned it to the board. "Lydia helped bring Peter back to life though I'm pretty sure it was unwillingly and unknowingly."
He looked her over in concern. "You saw Peter?"
"Uh huh. He strolled into Derek's place like nothing had happened." Scarlet scoffed rolling her eyes in annoyance.
"Why do I feel like that's not the only thing bothering you?" Stiles remarked watching his sister carefully.
"Because you're my twin and you know me so well. Peter... He said I have mom's spirit. He said her name. How dare he." She fumed sitting down on his bed.
Scott squeezed her hand trying to calm her down. "You were at her grave when he kidnapped you so that's probably how he knew her name. He was just trying to get under your skin."
"Well mom did go to Beacon Hills High. It wouldn't be that far fetched if Peter knew of her. And, well, he's not wrong. You do have mom's spirit." He smiled softly at her.
"I... Thanks Stiles." She squeezed Scott's hand back and smiled softly at her brother. "So what was I interrupting when I walked in?"
"We were talking wolf stuff that I know you don't want to be involved with, Scar."
"Oh." Scarlet let go of his hand and nodded her head. "Honestly as much as we both want me to stay out of it, I think I'm stuck in it. I mean, our best friend is a wolf and I'm dating a wolf. And my other best friend is... something."
"Dating huh? So you two really are a thing." Stiles gave her look.
"Stiles..." She shook her head.
"Hey no, if you're happy then I won't stand in your way. Might still chase him with a bat if I see his hands all over you though." He chuckled softly at her.
Scott rolled his eyes playfully at him. "Pretty sure he can out run you though."
"Not if I'm in the jeep." Stiles laughed causing his sister to smack him with a pillow.
