Pyrrha was in the auditorium next to Ruby and Yang when she felt a tap on her shoulder. Looking over she saw it was Onyx in a new set of the same clothes he had on.
"You're back, how did it go with the nurse?" Pyrrha questioned.
"It went fine, just put stitches in and took some pain pills, should be fine in a couple days" He said, purposely leaving the comment from the nurse out.
"Well that's good, ho-" Pyrrha was cut off by Ozpin.
"Good afternoon students. As you all know, we are here to officially welcome the two new teams of Beacon. Some of you may be surprised by only two new teams. Well this year I had changed the test and as a result, only eight people passed the test. With that said, will Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna and Yang Xiao Long please come up on stage." He announced as the four made their way to the stage.
"Ruby Rose and Miss Schnee, you two will be partners for the next four years aswell as Miss Long and Blake Belladonna. You four will make up Team RWBY, led by your leader Miss Ruby Rose." Ozpin said as Ruby's eyes widened in surprise as Yang pulled her into a bear hug.
The four girls left the stage as Ozpin had called the remaining four to the stage.
"Onyx Kanuchi, Pyrrha Nikos, Nora Valkyrie and Lie Ren, you four showed tremendous teamwork. Onyx you personally showed excellent strategic thinking. Onyx and Miss Nikos you will be partners along with Nora Valkyrie and Mr Ren. I am proud to announce you four as team OPNR. You will be led by Onyx Kanuchi" Ozpin said as he gave a smile to Onyx.
Onyx being slightly surprised gave a small smile to himself as he gently grabbed his locket. Walking off the stage he was pulled aside by Ozpin.
"You know, she would be proud of you Onyx. Do not let the stress get to you, I believe you will do fine as a leader" Ozpin said with a smile.
Onyx gave him a smile back and a determined nod and waved goodbye as he ran to catch up to the rest of his new team. Walking up in between Pyrrha and Nora he caught up.
"SOOO! Mighty O'leader Onyx, what do we do now" Nora asked enthusiastically with a wide smile.
"Well I was going to suggest maybe resting for a bit more before dinner. Plus I want to check our room out" Onyx suggested.
"I agree, it would be nice to settle our things," Ren said as Pyrrha gave a small nod in agreement.
The group continued walking till they stopped in front of their dorm. Nora bursting through the door gave sight of their room. They walked in and took in what they had been offered. Two bunk beds on opposite sides of the room with one desk between them and a window behind it. The walls were light grey and they had pitch black carpet. There was one Dresser at the feet of each set of bunks and a door on the left side of the room that led into a bathroom.
Onyx walked into the bathroom and noticed a simple sink and toilet with a shower and bath mix set and a small closet. Walking out he saw Nora throw her bag on the top bunk on the right side of the room.
"Claimed! Ren! Get the one below me!" Nora exclaimed.
"Nora, you don't have to yell" Ren said calmly as he set his bag on the bed beneath her.
"Oh I know I'm just really excited to finally be here and start. What about you guys!" Nore asked happily as she looked to Onyx and Pyrrha
"Well I am glad to be here and excited as well. I hope we can do well as a team" Pyrrha said with a smile.
"Ya know, I never intended to be here. Thought I would be at home helping around the house, but life throws you curveballs ya know" Onyx solemnly. "So I hope not to waste this opportunity. I hope I can do right by you guys. I won't let you guys down" He said with a sudden change of tone of determination with Pyrrha picking up his quick mood change.
Everyone started to unpack their belongings, with Onyx being done first with the least amount of stuff being two books with plain book covers blocking the titles, two pairs of combat uniforms and a couple casual clothes. He looked around and saw Nora hanging posters and sorting out her clothes and some board games while Ren had a chess set and multiple books on Grimm and fantasy. Pyrrha Pulled out multiple books on fighting and combat and put them neatly on the desk while she took out what looked like a cleaning kit for her weapon. She sat on her bed and disassembled her weapon and started to clean it.
"Hey Ima take a nap, could you guys wake me up when dinner gets closer?" Onyx asked.
"No problemo Onyx" Nora chimed.
Onyx grabbed a change of clothes and changed in the bathroom. Returning,Pyrrha turned her head and brought her hand to her mouth as she flashed a bit of pink on her face. She tried to stifle a giggle as she observed Onyx wearing a normal grey long sleeve shirt with grey short shorts with a black cross on each thigh
"Onyx, I didn't know you liked to wear short shorts," Pyrrha said while giggling.
"They are called ranger panties or silkies thank you very much" Onyx said while crossing his arms.
With Pyrrha still giggling Onyx walked to his bed that was above Pyrrhas and hopped up laying on his back. He put a wireless earbud in each ear and hit the play option on his scroll listening to a song called "Lilium''. He laid there closing his eyes and replaying the events of the test in his head. Feeling the exhaustion from the test finally settling in, as Onyx breathing became lighter and slower he let sleep overcome him.
"Child…." Onyx heard as he slowly opened his eyes.
Onyx looked to his right and noticed a familiar gate that led to a hill. He slowly got up feeling like his body could give out from exhaustion. He looked around and noticed he was in the same greyish lit space from the other day. He slowly walked up to the gate and put his hands around the bars to help his sluggish body. He noticed a chain around the gate entrance locking him out. He tried to break the chains to no avail. A small wisp of wind blew on Onyx which made him close his eyes. Once he opened them he saw a clump of bluish purple mist floating in front of him.
"Soon child… soon" The voice came from the mist.
The mist slowly moved towards Onyx, but disappeared as it passed through the gate.
"What the fuck are you! What do you even mean by your perplexing statements!? Why are you even in my head!?" Onyx screamed to the top of his lungs.
He got no response, just a slight breeze. He pushed off the gate and fell back, landing on his butt with his hands on his head. His breathing started to get shorter and faster. He laid down on his back controlling his breathing. He closed his eyes and fully calmed down. He felt a force pushing him onto his side, back and forth. He rolled onto his side and his eyes fluttered open.
Onyx was staring into two bright emerald green orbs. He blinked a few times and looked around the room to notice he was in his dorm room now.
"Finally, I was trying to wake you for the past minute Onyx. You were dug in like a tick. Are you okay, you started to rapidly breath frantically for a second" Pyrrha asked.
"Yea, I'm okay. Just a weird dream is all, what time is it?" Onyx asked while stretching.
"Just five till dinner, Ren and Nora left already. You wanna walk down with me?" She asked.
"Of course, let's go," Onyx said as he started walking towards the door.
"Wa-wait, you're going out in your short shorts?" Pyrrha asked with a giggle.
"Ranger panties and yes...I am. I don't really care if people laugh or whatever. These are cool and comfy." Onyx said with a small smile.
Pyrrha gave Onyx a look. She looked at his legs which were mostly exposed till right above the middle of his thighs.
'He does have the legs to pull them off, cant lie about that' She thought to herself while forming a mild blush on her face. 'What if he were to flex them, how much definition would sho-Okay stop Pyrrha thi-' Her thoughts were cut off.
"Well, ready to head out?" Onyx asked.
Pyrrha snapped out of her thoughts and gave a hesitant nod with a smile.
Onyx and Pyrrha left their room and walked for about ten minutes until they came upon the cafeteria. They quickly got in line and got their food and drinks and started to look for their teammates. Looking, Onyx saw Nora flagging them down at a table with team RWBY. Onyx sat next to Ren and Pyrrha sat to his right. The table was silent at first as team RWBY looked at Onyx.
"What?" He asked.
Ruby started to giggle as Yang gave Onyx a seductive whistle. Blake had a small smirk while glancing from her book while Weiss refused to look at him with a little blush.
"Damn Onyx, didn't expect a dinner and a show" Yang said with a playful tone.
Onyx gave Yang a blank stare. Yang laughed as Onyx ignored her and started to eat his food, soon with everybody joining.
"So Onyx, are you doing okay, from the wound you got in the forest I mean?" Ruby asked.
"Oh, yea. The painkillers are working great. Haven't given it a clear look yet so dont know how well it's healing. Probably all good to go in a couple days."
"That's good. How did it even happen?" Yang asked.
Onyx grew a slight smirk, "Well Pyrrha here was basically left for dead. Not a weapon in sight. Cornered by a pack of Beowolfs. The end was near as a Beowolf went for the kill swipe as I jumped in and took the hit for her. Pyrrha came running to my aid, "Onyx! Are you okay" she said worried I was dead. I got up and wiped the blood from my mouth and said " I'm fine. Now time to finish this" I sprung into action. Slashing and stabbing the Grimm left and right until there were no more. I walked up to Pyrrha and picked her up and we went back to the cliff" Onyx told the story to the group.
Team RWBY started to giggle as they didn't believe the story. Onyx felt a sturdy punch to his shoulder.
"Hey, what was that for?" Onyx asked Pyrrha as he rubbed his shoulder.
"Onyx that is not what happened. You are such a dork." Pyrrha said with a light smile.
"Okay okay. I found Pyrrha and decided to help with a pack of Beowolf. While fighting something happened with my aura and allowed the Grimm to get a hit on me. We finished them off and I passed out. Pyrrha here actually helped me by giving me a decent field patch job. Nurse said she prevented any serious infection or worse from settling in '' Onyx explained.
"So it was actually her who saved your life?" Ruby asked.
"In a way yes" Onyx said.
Everyone nodded and started to eat again. Onyx lifted his fork to his mouth, but was having trouble getting the fork in his mouth. Everytime it neared his mouth it would suddenly shift to the left or right.
"Okay what the heck, why is my fork broken!?" Onyx said annoyed.
The table began to laugh at his situation while unbeknownst to them, Pyrrha had her own smirk as she enjoyed the current situation and finished her meal with the others.
Pyrrha walked out of the bathroom taking a shower. She finished drying and brushing her hair.
"Hey Nora, Ren you seen Onyx?" She asked.
"Yea, he mentioned going to the roof a little bit after you left for the shower. Pretty sure he is still up there." Ren said.
"Okay, I'm going to check on him, it is getting late" Pyrrha said.
"Okay! Have fun!" Nora said happily.
Pyrrha wandered the halls till she found the stairs that led to the roof. She walked up and saw a door with a window. She looked through it and saw Onyx sitting at the edge of the building. She gently opened the door and walked up to him. She saw he had his fist together with his locket in them up to his face.
"Onyx?" She asked to get his attention.
"Oh, hey Pyrrha, what are you doing out here?" He asked.
"I could ask you the same thing, it's getting pretty late." She said while taking a seat next to him.
"Just enjoying the nice night tonight. As well as talking to my mom as well, updating her" He said.
"Talking to your mom as in praying?" She questioned?
"Yea… she's not here anymore so it's my only way. You find it weird?" He asked.
"What? No no. I was just curious, is all" She said, "Did she give you that locket?" She asked.
"Yea… That reminds me, I owe you an explanation still about what happened with my eyes" He said.
"Oh yea, I was wondering about that" She said.
"If I'm going to tell you about that, then I need to tell you about the night I lost my mom because it's the same night I found out about it" Onyx said.
"Onyx you don't have to if it's unc-" She was cut off.
"No… it's okay. I haven't told anybody about it and I feel like I should and since you are my partner, I'm going to trust you and let you know" He said.
Pyrrha didn't try to argue. She was interested but more importantly she had a feeling Onyx needed to get something off his chest and she would help him even if it meant just listening to him.
"Did you ever hear about the massive storm Vale had back a couple of months ago?" He questioned.
"Yea, I saw the reports on it. It said it wiped out a small coastal village and they found no survi-" She cut herself off, 'No way is he..." She thought.
"Yea, that was my home. I had lived there my entire life with my mom" He said with a smile.
A silence overcame the two as Pyrrha processed the truth.
"It was the night of my birthday. After My mom and I celebrated with food and stuff she gave me this" He said as he held out his locket to her. " If you flip it open you see a picture for us in front of a waterfall. I took her to that waterfall for her birthday earlier this year and took that picture. She decided to put it in that locket and give it to me" He explained.
Pyrrha flipped open the locket and saw a smiling Onyx with a woman who looked like she was in her mid thirties. She had deep midnight purple hair and a bright smile as she hugged Onyx.
"She is very beautiful. That smile she has is infectious" Pyrrha said sweetly.
"Thanks, she would appreciate that. Probably smother you in hugs and kisses for the compliment. I love her smile. Always was able to calm me down." Onyx said with a little chuckle.
Pyrrha giggled at the thought of getting squeezed in a death hug.
"Anyway, that night I went to bed, I was woken by thunder. I rushed outside when I heard screaming. My mom had been trapped by debris. It was chaos outside, intense winds, heavy rain, my home was crushed" Onyx paused taking a breath as Pyrrha listened intently.
"I was able to get my mom out from under the debris and started to leave. We were attacked by Grimm but I was able to handle that. Then… then the storm really picked up and separated us. I decided to fight the storm and try and stop it, slow it down at least to buy her time" He explained.
"Wait, fight the storm… how?" She asked.
"Ah, my bad. My semblance is manipulation of wind or control to an extent if you will. It's how I was able to fight the Grimm with you back in the forest. I'm able to form weapons and even form a little current I can use to pass through. The more I use it, the more it tires me out." He explained.
"Ah, that explains a lot," She said.
"Anyway, I gathered as much wind as I could and basically threw it at the storm to slow it down and block debris from flying towards us. I was able to actually hold it back until a slash of wind like a whip slashed over my right eye. That's why I have this scar. It forced me to cover it and take focus of the storm which allowed it to send debris towards me. I was supposed to die there, protecting her, but she..my mom jumped in the way and took the debris head on. Three metal poles impaled her…" He said as he stopped.
Pyrrha looked and noticed his left hand in a fist, turning his knuckles pure white while shaking. She slowly put her hand on his to calm him down. He looked at her upon feeling a touch to his hand. He stared at her as she gave him a sincere small smile. He gave a small smile and took a couple deep breaths and continued.
"I caught her and started to cry. That is when I had noticed Grimm encroaching on us. I blasted them and everything around us with a massive gust of wind. My mom made the comment "your eyes have changed" I didn't know what it meant at the time but figured out that's when I first must have unconsciously changed my eyes. She ended up dying in my arms a few minutes later. I ended up burying her at that waterfall, figured she should rest in a beautiful place as well as a happy place for her. I haven't been back there for two months now" Onyx finished explaining.
Pyrrha sat there with a sad look on her taking in all the information. He had just told his past to her. Trusted her with something that was obviously a serious deal to him. She smiled at the thought. She wouldn't betray that trust.
"Thank you Onyx, for telling me" She said with a smile.
"Thank you for listening to Pyrrha… I really appreciate it " Onyx said as he smiled at her and a silence overcame them for a minute.
"So you're going to guide me back to the room?" He questioned.
"What do you mean?" She asked, confused.
Onyx made a gesture with his eyes to his left hand which was still being held by Pyrrhas. Pyrrha quickly released it and looked away with a tint of pink on her face.
Onyx chuckled " Come on, it's getting late" He said as he stood up.
Pyrrha followed and they both entered their room. Onyx plopped onto his bed as well as Pyrrha.
"Hey Onyx, why don't you use a weapon considering using your semblance tires you out quicker?" She asked in a whisper.
"We never really could afford it. I mainly used a cruddy wooden stick for a spear and sword, but I did have a nice bow I made but that was lost that same night. Haven't really given it much thought to be honest" He explained.
"Oh, okay. Well we should sleep, don't wanna be tired for our first class tomorrow"
"Yea, night Pyrrha and thank you again" He said as he closed his eyes.
"Of Course Onyx, goodnight" She said.
Onyx drifted to sleep as Pyrrha was thinking of what Onyx just mentioned. ' Couldn't afford a weapon…' She thought.
A smile crept on her face as an idea popped in her head. She would have to give it more thought before acting on it. She closed her eyes and slowly drifted to sleep.
