Chapter 8: The Chase

For what felt like the longest time Hiccup stood in place frozen stiff as Dagur and the rest of the Berserkers with him saw the one-legged teen. Hiccup wasn't sure why his body was unresponsive all of a sudden, but his mind is screaming at his body to move right now. Both of his green eyes widened upon seeing them moving towards, sprinting while aiming their crossbows.

*Thud!*

Another arrow whizzed by his head and embedded itself into the same tree next to him. Almost as if a switch was thrown, Hiccup snapped out of his stupor, and then bolted out of the area at his top speed, which was hampered thanks to his prosthetic. All the while he could hear Dagur shrilling cries behind him, "You can run Hiccup, but you're as good as mine!"

The Berserkers behind him all followed their leader, some of the fatigue forgotten as their target is now in sight. Still, they weren't as energized as usual, but could still pursue their target. What drove them is the fact that this hunt could be over soon enough. Sten in particular was happy to see the teen, fully prepared to get some much-needed payback, even if Dagur is there and wanted him alive. He would have his turn no matter what, "Dagur, what's the plan!?"

"Disable Hiccup in any way possible! Go for his legs, arms, whatever, as long as he stays alive!" the teen shouted authority as he wanted to end this right now. The desire to enact his final plan with the Night Fury kept growing and catching Hiccup would help it. As he kept up the pursuit, he shakily aimed his crossbow the best he could, all the movement throwing off his aim some. Despite the setback it didn't discourage him as he pulled the trigger. The string shot out, the arrow launching out and flying towards the one-legged teen at a fast rate. Unfortunately his aim is off as the arrow strayed away from its target and landed into the ground, just inches away from the target.

Hiccup nearly stumbled as he could almost feel the impact of the arrow as it hit the ground. He nearly stumbled from it, but managed to keep his footing to keep running. As he past the trees the boy realized that he's going in a straight line, not good as he's just a straight shot from being hit. Thinking quickly, Hiccup veered off to the right, weaving through the trees to try and lose them, and mostly try to put as many trees between him and the incoming arrows. If he kept on moving in an erratic pattern, then it would be difficult for them to hit him. Thankfully this seem to be working as he heard various thuds, most likely the trees getting pelted by the arrows. Not bothering to look back he kept up this tactic, veering off to one side, hoping this could put some distance between them, and afraid to see how much distance they closed.

A minute passed as the teen kept moving, far ahead both eyes spotted a thick overturned oak log. Not even having to think about it, he hopped over the fallen trunk once close enough, but crouched down, back pressed against the surface. Stopping abruptly caused the teen's breathing to become haggard and deep, almost as if he's about to wheeze. Both hands shot up to cover his mouth, muffling the breathing down, as it could give him away. In no time voices and shouting along with rapid footsteps pierced through the silence as it got louder with every second. Before he knew it the Berserkers hopped over the log, the loud crunching of the bark causing thee by to jump and tremble as they were literally on top of him…yet the movement didn't stop and kept on moving forward a few yards. An overwhelming relief came over him as they kept charging forward away from him. Almost immediately Hiccup didn't want to wait around in case they looked back.

"Where did he go!" Dagur shouted and came to a complete stop upon realizing that he lost sight of his target. Both eyes scanning the area, but is being obstructed by the mass amount of trees.

"Did we lose him!?" another Berserker shouted as he too looked.

"No, he must still be around here," Sten corrected as he too joined on the search. His heart racing and breathing nearly winded from the running. Any sense of fatigue gone as the adrenaline poured through him, through all of them and provided a good rush for them. Out of them all Sten wanted to find Hiccup, even more than Dagur did. His uninjured hand resting on the hilt of his sword and being prepared for anything. Looking at his comrades he saw them all looking around…yet only in front of them. Taking the chance, he turned around, both eyes widening upon seeing a figure propped up on top the same tree they jumped over. "There he is!"

Hiccup's body tensed up upon hearing that and looked back, only to see all the Berserkers attention now back on him. Upon seeing Dagar rush up front did he manage to move once more, the Berserker chief shoving Sten to the side, "Out of the way, he's mine!" Standing still he now could have a clear shot, as he pulled his crossbow up, aiming quickly before pulling the trigger.

Quickly reacting, Hiccup then pulled out his shield in time, the arrow hitting and bouncing off of it with a metallic clang, much to Dagur's annoyance. Hiccup winced from the impact but managed to stay on his feet. Lowering the shield down the teen then realized that Dagur is still up front, giving him a clear shot as well. Quickly aiming Hiccup then pressed a button on the side, and fired out a bola, which quickly approached the group in front. Dagur quickly reacted to this and in a flash grabbed one of his men and using him as a human shield just as the bola connected, wrapping around him instead, leaving the Berserker chief free still.

"Oh no," Hiccup gasped out as the wrong target is hit. Worst of all he's now down a Bola…yet at least one of them is down. Deciding it was best to leave, he turned around and started to run again.

"Don't stand there, get him!" Dagur shouted, shoving the wrapped-up soldier to the side, a loud thump being heard as he lost his balance and hit the ground with a thump.

"Hey, let me out!" the wrapped-up Berserker shouted as he struggled to get free, the rest of his team leaving him behind.

The chase was on once more as this time Hiccup managed to get ahead of them this time around, but really had to push himself in order keep the distance. Luckily, there is one less Berserker chasing him…yet that only left six of them, including Dagur. As he pushed himself Hiccup could feel his stump starting to burn some, causing a small wince to come onto his face He wasn't meant to push his leg that much but here he is. He needed to lose them somehow, before his leg gave out and he was caught. It was then hhe remembered that he's nearing the dragon traps that were still in place, along with the other ones he didn't know of. If he could somehow lead them into some then maybe he could make their numbers dwindle. It was a long shot, but it was the only one he had.

A couple minutes of chasing Dagur stopped, as well as his men as they looked around trying to find Hiccup. They had him in their sights, and he is gone…but that didn't deter Dagur at all as he kept his eyes peeled, "Keep a good look out, he has to still be here!"

"But where? He could be still running," Sten asked.

"No, he's not, with that leg of his there's no way he can run that fast or for long, chances are he had to stop for a rest," the teen instructed his men as he moved forward. "Fan out, find him! And those who have the bottles, use them."

Three of the Berserkers nodded as they each had one green bottle strapped to their belts. They were all corked and upon closer inspection are filled with the same liquid that was used on the raid of the village. One long whiff of this is enough to knock anyone out. They didn't have too many of them as a majority was used during the initial raid, so they needed to conserve them. But now Dagur is giving them the ok to use them, they were more than ok to oblige. Following instruction, they all started to move out in different directions, weapons pointed forward.

Hiccup Is panting quietly as possible, as he is crouched behind a tree, needing to take a break from the constant running. Unfortunately, he could still hear Dagur's voice, and judging by t how clear his voice is, he is near, and heading towards his direction from the distinct sounds of crunching leaves yet wasn't sure who it was to be exact. He didn't dare peek out in fear of getting spotted, prompting him to search around for another place to sneak by.

Turning around to look caused both eyes to light up as he could see something partially hidden behind some trees a little way off. A smiled graced his face upon realizing it was a roper. A long tube which could fire a large bola at anyone who tripped the rope wire. Looking around near it he could see the trip wire, which is still in tacked, perfect. His body stiffened upon hearing the footsteps getting closer…in his exact direction!

If he stayed there, he would get spotted, but if he made a quick sprint for the trap it can help him, only if he could trigger it. Yet, the problem is that by running he'll be spotted, and the chase will resume once more. A hand reached to rub at the amputated flesh pressed against his prosthetic, the burning receding some but not all the way. He could run but not sure for how long. Despite the complications, he knew that he had to get away from these guys and triggering the traps could be the only way to help him, so it was the only logical move for now. He just hoped that it wasn't Dagur heading his way, as he wasn't sure if he'll fall for the trap or not…that and being that much closer to him just sent a chill through his body. The footsteps kept getting closer, prompting Hiccup that it was now or never. Taking a few deep breathes he slowly rose back up and took off into another sprint, his feet thumping on the ground as he did so.

"There he is!" one of the Berserkers shouted as they saw him run out from a tree up ahead, and took off after, following right behind.

Hiccup quickly closed the distance between him and the roper and could see the rope wire within reach yet needed to time it right as he would get only one chance. Once close enough he leaped and dived down, hands grasping the rope and pulling on it, activating the trap. To his relief the trap sprang to life, opening up as a large bola shot out of the device, flying over his head and continuing on behind him. The Berserker pursuing him stopped in his tracks as he saw something flying towards him but didn't have enough time to react as the rope opened up and hit him, wrapping entirely around his body, pinning both arms and legs together in a tight manner. The momentum from bola transferred, causing him to fall down backwards with a loud thump.

"That's two," Hiccup breathed out in relief, taking a glance back at the bound Berserker. Both eyes shot open upon seeing the others coming in quickly, thankfully his body remained responsive as he quickly got up and sprinted off again.

"Help me!" the bound soldier shouted as he struggled to get free. His pleads were heard as his comrades slowed down upon getting closer, but were stopped.

"Forget him, get Hiccup!" Dagur ordered to them in a irritated tone, one of which they reluctantly responded to. Picking up the chase once more and leaving their teammates behind just like the first one.

"Hey!" he shouted back, still struggling to get free. In all honesty It wasn't like he couldn't get free, it would just take a bit of time to do so.

Hiccup on the other hand Dagur's order and mentally cursed, really hoping at least a couple of them would stay behind. He kept bobbing and weaving through the trees, pushing himself to keep running for as long as he can, he just needed to keep the distance up. "Almost there…another should be coming up…here!"

Both eyes locked with some strong, thick trees before him, with rope dangling down from above on the branches. One of the netters, perfect! He ran straight for the device, knowing that Dagur and the others would be taking the same route as him, and hopefully won't notice the trap. Taking a chance, he looked back, and saw they were some yards away from him, and quickly closing in. Looking forward he noticed that the hidden net was quickly approaching. This would need to be timed just right or else he will get caught himself. How lucky of him to not have tried this before.

Not able to steel himself properly he started to count down.

"3…2…1…now!" he said to himself, bending his knees before launching himself up into the air. The forward momentum he garnered managed to carry him over a few feet, yet he managed to clear the net. Both feet then landed back on the ground

*thud*

"AH!" his knees buckle from the impact, causing him to fall down onto his hands and knees. A painful hiss came out as his stump started to hurt as a result of the jump, but sadly he had to try and ignore it the best he could and keep moving. Thor knows how much distance they managed to close in because of that.

"Gotcha you little-AH!" a voice suddenly shouted from behind but didn't get to finish for some reason. Looking back Hiccup saw that two of the Berserkers managed to trigger the netter, the trap activated and hoisted both of the Berserkers up into the air within the net. Both cried out and struggled to get free as the weapons they held dropped from hand. The sight alone brought a moment of relief to the teen as four are down with three more to go, including Dagur.

"Leave them, get Hiccup!" Dagur's voice echoed another arrow whirled towards him, Hiccup immediately used his shield to block and deflect the object just in time. Not wasting another second, a grunt escaped him as he made another run for it, knowing that three more were right behind him, yet they must be plenty far enough as he could almost barely hear their voices. This is good, maybe he can hide again.

"Where is he now!?" Dagur shouted as he lost sight of his target once again, but continued forward, as did Sten and the last of his soldiers. They were in a tight nit ground keeping a watchful eye out for any kind of movement. They were irritated that Hiccup managed to get the slip on them yet were surprised at how he managed. This is only making their job harder.

"This has gone on long enough!" Sten growled out loud, stopping a moment before veering off in another direction.

Hiccup is panting as fatigue started to settle in, the burning in his stump retirning but now getting irritated, but he tried to ignore it as much as possible, anything to put as much distance between him and Dagur. So far, he didn't hear anything, except for his haggard breaths, so he figured he was in the clear. Despite this fact he kept going just to be sure, not wanting to leave anything to chance.

"OOF!" All of a sudden, a huge force rammed into his right side, projecting him off his feet and landing roughly some yards from the spot he was running in. A painful Groan escaped Hiccup as he slowly sat up, only for his eyes to widen as one of his pursuers is standing before him.

"Got you now, you little mutton head!" Sten shouted with glee, finally having the boy in reach. Normally Dagur would need to be alerted to their location, but he wanted a moment alone with him…he had been waiting long enough. He took a threatening step forward, as Hiccup is still on the ground, he backed up fast, immediately knowing who this guy is. He saw the man's right hand unconsciously reached out to grab him.

"Now, you'll pay for-GYAH!" Sten's hand recoiled upon making contact with the teen's arm, the pain from the burns flaring up big time. There was no way he could grip him with his right hand without pain. Hiccup noticed this and used this opportunity to repeat what he did last time. Lifting up his prosthetic foot, he then kicked forward….only for Sten's uninjured arm to catch it, holding the metal foot in his strong grip as he looked back at with fury, "That won't work this time!"

Hiccup's breathing picked up as he's caught now! The Berserker's has his foot trapped in hand and is now trying to shake it free, but the grip is too solid. No way he can crawl away, nor could he get free as the man before him now has him. A thought crossed him to just untie the prosthetic but then he wouldn't be able to walk, thus only allowing him to get caught once more. The sad realization of being trapped cemented itself as in mere moments he could be in Dagur's hands.

"Stop moving!" Sten grunted as he used everything he had to keep the metal leg from freeing itself. He was having trouble as his left arm wasn't as strong as his right, but it would have to do. Sadly, this could have been over with if it wasn't for his right arm. He would have to do this one handed for now as, he kept moving forward, trying to pin pin the boy down. Once that happened then he could get a bit of retribution before taking him to Dagur. "You're going to pay nice and slowly for what you did to my arm."

Now Hiccup was panicking as he redoubled his efforts to try and escape, as whatever this guy has planned, he didn't want to be anywhere near him to allow it to happen. Yet, what can he do? The Berserker who has him is much stronger than him and even if he could get free the chase would be much shorter. There had to be something he can do. Both eyes widen a sudden thought came to mind, prompting him to hastily reach into his belt, whipping out his knife, and with a quick swipe, sliced at the man's left arm.

"AHHH!" Sten cried out in pain as a burning sensation now started up in his left arm, pulling it back and releasing the leg. On reaction his right hand went to cradle the limb, only for more pain to follow as the burnt flesh radiated as well. Looking down he then found a nice deep cut on his forearm.

Once his prosthetic is freed Hiccup immediately reacted by rearing his left leg back Hiccup then launching it forward, right between the man's legs. A loud grunt of pain came out before nothing else. Both hands went down to cradle his aching spot, as both eyes squeezed shut and teeth grit as an unbearable pain overtook his whole body. This has to be worse than the slice in his arm! Not able to stand it he keeled over onto his side, curling up a bit as he tried to power through the pain, but getting hit in that spot, especially with a metal foot it would take time.

Hiccup got back up to his feet, knife still in hand, not believing that it worked, but here he is free. For a moment he stood there, looking down at the fallen enemy before him, who is now temporarily defenseless. His mind suddenly on overdrive as various thoughts came to mind. Part of him finding this a good opportunity to get rid of this guy, dwindling down the numbers again…besides this guy already is showing he doesn't like Hiccup and it would be best not to allow him to roam around….That's something that should be logical to do…but nothing happened. His hand trembled at the mere thought of taking another life, something he knew he had to do in a situation like this…The grip on the knife tightened as this thought plagued him, wanting to get it over with. But did he really want another face to add to the eight he already sees? The guilt from earlier rousing up and making the decision harder than it already is. This has to be done, it was the only way to keep him safe but…he can't…he can't, not like this, especially since he's in a helpless state, even if it's temporary.

"I can't do it…" Hiccup said to himself…stunned and shocked at this realization. The moment those words left his lips the grip on his knife loosened but he managed to stop it from falling. Turning around he then bolted, putting much distance between him and the Berserker. He kept pushing himself the best he can despite the radiating pain starting to swell from his stump. His body wasn't meant to run this much, especially as his stump wasn't used to it. Still, he it was something he couldn't stop doing, not now.

After a bit the downed Berserker no longer could be seen, meaning he put a good enough distance between him. Focusing on the path before him, both eyes spotting something which prompted him to skid to a complete stop. His momentum nearly pushing him forward more but thankfully he flailed his arms about to regain his balance pulling himself back to stop from going over the edge. Once situated again he looked down at the spot before him and for some reason the ground in front seemed off. Many leaves or something littered the ground, covering it…but the coloring looked off and out of place upon closer inspection. Hiccup wasn't sure why, but curiosity got the best of him as he kneeled down and proceeded to move some of the leaves away, only to reveal a net! Some light got through and the teen could see a hole in the ground! He let the leaf go as he realized that this must have been another trap, but this wasn't a dragon trap, no, they could fly over this one easily. The trap looked to be six feet in diameter but how deep it was is unknown.

"Wait…" he then remembered the map of the traps that were on Berk and looking around he could tell this is a part of Berk he never really explored, thus never encountering it. The additional traps came to mind as it dawned on him. "This…this must be the pit…a large hole in the ground to trap any human intruders…of course."

He mentally sighed at nearly falling for this trap, but thankfully he spotted it in time. Being careful he circled around the hole, trying to avoid it, but stopped as rapid footsteps were heard, "There you are!" Looking up another Berserker soldier came running like a speeding yak, quickly closing the distance. Hiccup wasn't sure why, but he stood there frozen as his brain failed to respond right then and there.

"Whoa!" just as he was mere feet away, he stepped onto the trap, the bottom giving out and dropping down, along with the Berserker. But the momentum of his speed actually caused him to sail forward, especially as he got in one small jump in as he tried leaping for the boy. His upper body, from the chest up landed and hit the edge of the hole, half of his body out of the hole. Hiccup is caught off guard at this, causing him to fall back, his knife and shield falling out of his hands. As he tried to move back, he felt both of his legs being grabbed by his pursuer. Two strong hands held both of his feet, keeping the teen in place. "I gotcha!"

"No, no, no!" Hiccup said to himself as he was caught once more, this time by both legs. The teen wiggled about trying to break free as he thrashed about. He musted up whatever strength he had but couldn't get free, the solid grip holding for the time being. The Beserker on the other hand wanted to capitalize on this, but had trouble pulling himself out of the hole. His feet tried digging into the side of the hole, but couldn't find a sturdy footing as his boots slipped. He could pull himself out but that would require letting one of the legs go, but that was something he didn't want to do just in case. Factor in the kid's thrashing and that is making it harder for him, but he's able to keep his grip.

"I got him! Over here!" the man called out loud, trying to get anyone's attention as he continued to hold the boy. All he had to do is keep him here until the others get here and that would be it.

Hiccup on the other hand started to breath fast in a panic, he had to act fast or else it would be over for him. Something had to be done but he wasn't sure of what. Quickly, he looked around to find something to use, but then spotted his knife on the ground nearby. He reached out to try and grab it, but came up a bit short as mere inches stood between them. Grunts of exertion escaped him as he continued to struggle, shifting his body weight from side to side, trying to use the momentum to close that reaming distance. "Only…a little more…"

"You're so going to get it when Dagur gets here, you've caused so much trouble you useless twig!" the Berserker grunted as he kept the hold on the legs, trying to pin them down. Hiccup didn't respond as he tried once more, throwing his weight over to the side with everything he had left in him. His left hand finally making contact with the hilt as it then enclosed around his knife. Gripping it firmly Hiccup then sat up and with as much strength possible did a blindd horizontal slash at his pursuer.

Just like that all the struggle stopped…followed gagging.

Both of Hiccup's eyes widen in hour as his mouth dropped upon watching the Berserker's hands release his legs before clutching at his neck. Nothing but crimson seeping through the hands as the man's eyes started to roll in the back of his head, more choking and gagging being heard as he's having trouble breathing. The teen had to shield himself as some crimson squirted out and landed on his own clothes, but then backed up away from him…yet Hiccup couldn't stop looking as the life slowly started to leave the man. Hiccup couldn't stop looking away as he continued to watch on as the Berserker's grip loosened and he fell back into the hole, an audible thump being heard.

And nothing else.

Hiccup is still on the ground, still in shock at what he witnessed realizing what he had done…body trembling at the realization of what he did came into the light and registered to his mind. His left hand shakily rose, eyes glancing at the red staining the metal. And the fact that no movement could be heard at all further cemented things for him. "Not again…not again…" he breathed out in horror. He didn't want to do it again, just like the previous Berserker, yet he just reacted as he was in trouble and had no other option. The guilt from earlier coming back and making him nearly sick. He tried to justify his action…but…If his actions were justified, then why did it feel wrong to him?

"Get up Hiccup…Get up!" he practically screamed to himself, as he tried to get over his shock that held him. His mind practically weighting him down from the kill and the blood on his clothes didn't help in that matter either. Thankfully his body responded finally, getting back up and unconsciously wiping his blade on the grass first before putting it back onto his belt. He grabbed his shield and made sure his bag had everything, yet something caught his eye. Along with his stuff he saw a green bottle...one of the same ones that he saw being used in the village. Where did that come from? He didn't get a chance to ponder this as he just picked it up before running off.

A few minutes later Dagur came to the same area, not too long ago hearing a cry for help and following it the best he could, only to come to this area. Both eyes rose in confusion as nothing could be seen, aside from a strange hole I the ground. Curiosity grabbed ahold as he walked over to the edge, peering inside…only for his eyes to widen as he saw one of his men down there unmoving. It took the teen a moment to realize that he's dead, as the slice in his throat being a giveaway. Utter astonishment and surprise overcame him as the Berserker leader as he knew that Hiccup is responsible for this, but it still floored him. How could his so-called brother have done something like this? For all he knew is that Hiccup has always been a small kid who could never do harm anyone, yet as he saw the evidence once more it only confirmed it.

"Hiccup…you're full of surprises…surprises are too dangerous for me," Dagur said to himself, but then quickly turned around, aiming his crossbow, only to see a familiar face. "Sten?"

"What happened?" Sten asked upon walking up, his bandaged, burnt, arm gently holding a rag to his bleeding arm. Visible ticks of pain on his face as he had to use a lot of will power not to cry out as his burns acted up from the small pressure, yet thankfully the flow stopped some.

"What happened to you!?" he asked, curious as to why he's holding his arm.

"That little pest sliced me with the knife before kicking me with his leg…lets just say it was in a spot you didn't want to get hit in," Sten admitted, which Dagur seemed to nod in understanding. "What's going on here?"

"We lost Hiccup…and another soldier," the teen motioned to the hole, in which Sten looked over into, both eyes widening.

"What in Thor's name…how?"

"Hiccup is a lot different than what I imagine, he's dangerous now…well not to me but still, he can't be taken lightly now," Dagur responded as he holstered his crossbow onto his back, knowing Hiccup may be long gone.

Sten's left hand clenched in anger as another soldier is gone. And what is worse is that he had the boy in his grasp, and if it wasn't for his bum arm, he could have had him! Now he had a bleeding arm, thanks to him, as the desire to get payback skyrocketed. Still, he had to listen to Dagur even though he wanted to run off, "What now?"

"We head back to town, but this time we send some of the Outcasts out," Dagur responded, now walking back towards the village. "If Hiccup is going to continue on his killing spree, then I rather not it be any more of my men. Hiccup will tire out eventually, I'll give him that time, then we close in on him."

"But sir…he could be close by, why give him a chance to further escape us?" Sten asked, not worried about any consequences that would come from his outburst, he just wanted to get the boy more than anything.

"Well, I'm almost out of arrows and need to stock back up," Dagur responded simply, rather wanting to be full of arrows rather than run out in the middle of a chase.

"Wait, you're still coming out again?" Sten asked, confused. Part of him figured that Dagur would stop chasing after, part of him curious if his leader is a bit afraid of their target, but that couldn't be.

"Of course!" the teen turned to face his companion, a huge evil like smile on his face. "Despite all the setbacks, I'm having a blast!"

"I can see that," Sten responded, with a sweat dropped. Dagur's excitement for hunting will get him killed one day…that is what could take on the deranged leader?

"Now come on!" Dagur resumed walking back, suddenly remembering something. "I suppose we should free the men that were caught in the traps…maybe."

Sten was left speechless as a sigh left his mouth but he followed behind unwillingly. Hiccup may have gotten away this time, but it wouldn't mean he would give up the hunt. Neither was Dagur, who is finding the situation as some kind of game.

Yet the question is: Who will win?

A/N: Hope you like, you weren't expecting that weren't you? Hiccup killed once more, only this time he did it as a way to defend himself. It was the only way for him to stay safe. He's horrified at what happened and it's something he seems to not be able to avoid. He didn't get time to fully digest what he did but that will come in the next chapter and believe me it's going to be good. Plus, we see some moments from the character Sten, he could prove to be a problem to Hiccup. Thank you all for sticking by this story as I appreciate it. If you have any questions feel free to ask and i look forward to see what you all think. Till next time
