A/N: I'm so sorry for not posting sooner, I had a lot of things to do and a writer's block! Thank you so much for reading my story, it really means so much! I hope you all like the chapter.
Mai had her arms wrapped around herself as her eyes darted from Naru to Gene nervously. Silence penetrated the room since no one dared to move or speak. Lin's eyes were on Gene, trying to gauge his reaction, while Naru watched him in a seemingly apathetic way. He regarded his twin almost nonchalantly.
'We're returning to England tomorrow. Martin and Luella have already made accommodations for our stay.' He had said it so casually that it took Mai a moment to catch what he had said.
Gene on the other hand, had stilled at the abrupt declaration. He had remained silent, and Naru hadn't offered more information. His piercing blue eyes were fixed on his brother as he waited for him to register the implications.
"Am I going as well?" Gene finally asked, keeping his gaze down, even though he already knew the answer.
"Yes"
"D-Do they-"
"No," Naru interrupted him, having already predicted the question. Do they know about me? Mai understood the unspoken question, and she was sure everyone else did too.
"O-oh, well…I see," Gene said, rubbing his arm self-consciously. "I bet they'll be surprised." Mai bit her lip wondering what she could say to alleviate the tension.
She blinked and noticed that Gene's eyes were on her. He let out a small sigh and his expression warmed. He offered her a small tentative smile, and then he visibly straightened. Mai raised an eyebrow questioningly, but he had already turned to his brother.
"I'll start packing, Noll. At what time did you say our plane would leave?" He asked, ignoring his brother's momentary unsettled expression.
"At six," he answered, knowing that Gene had already surmised that it was in the morning. "We're not opening today." Gene nodded in understanding and slowly walked away. Nobody questioned this since they were aware that he had a lot of things to think about.
"Are we included as well?" Takigawa asked as Yasu shifted in his seat clearly wanting to know as well. Masako had used her kimono sleeve to cover her anxiety at the answer. Ayako was drumming her fingers on her lap, while John only tilted his head curiously. "Do we need to start packing, too?"
"I suggest you start now if you don't want to miss the flight, but it can't be helped if you miss it." Naru answered, and they all practically beamed.
Yes, they were a bit peeved at the fact that he hadn't told them sooner, but this was as close as Naru would get to saying that he wanted them to go. It was also evident that he wouldn't judge them if they decided to stay since they really didn't know what to expect in England.
They would likely find the necromancer, after all, and that man would undoubtedly be very dangerous and unpredictable.
Even so, his friends would never abandon him or his brother in their time of need. There was never any doubt that they would all go to England.
.
Naru maintained his usual uncaring countenance even when he wanted to smile at Mai's eager expression. His beautiful brunette was dressed in a form hugging trench coat that flattered her figure. Her slim jeans looked amazing as she wore some fashionable black boots to compliment her look. Ayako had helped her dress up stating that they needed to look their best for the "British hunks."
Before he could glare at her statement, she had given him a knowing wink.
"England is so amazing!" Mai smiled, eyeing the streets in interest, not caring that it was raining or that none of her companions responded. She was trying to compensate for his, Lin and Gene's somber moods.
The others had gone to a café to give Naru time to go home and reunite with his parents. They had wordlessly provided their support knowing that there wasn't anything that they could say that could diffuse his or Gene's tension. The twins appreciated it since they weren't really in the mood for talking.
Mai, having read their expressions, wasn't giving them any encouraging words either. Though that didn't mean that she wasn't doing her best to ease them a little.
Naru was thankful for this since her mere presence soothed him.
Gene, on the other hand, hadn't looked away from the car's window. He stared at the passing scenery with a faraway look.
"Gene, sweetheart, where's your brother?" Luella asked gently, though worriedly. She had been searching for her other son for about an hour, yet he was nowhere to be found. Naturally, the only person to know was his older twin brother.
"I don't know," he lied. He had avoided looking into her eyes, and his eyes darted back and forth guiltily. Her expression warmed as she leaned down to be at his level.
"Please tell me," she urged him kindly with her broken Japanese. It had only been a couple of months since the twins had been adopted, and she had learned the language in order to bond with her sons. Gene being the more sociable twin had opened up extensively.
Unfortunately, he still didn't fully trust her around Oliver.
"I can't tell you," he responded stubbornly. He crossed his arms and refused to meet her gaze.
"Why not?" She asked softly. She ran a gentle hand down his soft hair tenderly. "I just want to make sure that he's alright. I'm worried about Oliver, and I want to take care of him."
"I'm already taking care of him!" Gene retorted defensively. His eyes had narrowed finding offense to her words. He would always take care of his little brother.
"So he's sick." Luella surmised with a frown. "Then he needs to get checked by the doctor and take his medicine." His expression wavered, and he finally conceded.
He led her to his small hideout inside his closet. His small hands tugged on her skirt, and she kneeled down to see her youngest son asleep on a makeshift bed. His cheeks were flushed and his breathing was ragged. A cool wet towel was placed on his forehead to keep him cool.
Gene bit his lower lip as he fumbled with his hands uncomfortably. He didn't like it when people saw his brother so vulnerable, but he realized that he should trust his new mother to help him protect Noll.
"Please help him," he finally whispered. Luella looked up at him with warm eyes.
"I promise. I'll always help you," she answered lovingly. "You may not be related to me by blood, but even so, I still love you both so much, my precious sons." She cupped his cheek tenderly. Gene's eyes watered, and she embraced him tightly. She realized that she had taken a major step in getting his trust, and for that she was content. These boys meant the world to her.
"We're here?" Mai asked. Her eyes widened at the Davis estate.
Naru never told her that he lived in a mansion!
Her boyfriend nodded tensely, and she sighed wondering what they would do now.
Naru hadn't informed their mother that they had arrived to England. In fact, he had smoothly lied and told her that they would arrive at nine. It was currently seven.
He hadn't wanted his mother to pick them up. It was completely understandable, since he really didn't want a scene at the airport. There was no telling how his parents would react. "Do you want me to stay in the car?" She asked softly.
"No," Both twins answered simultaneously.
Naru was the first to get out of the car, while Gene hesitated. Mai gave him a small pat on his shoulder to get him moving.
If she hadn't known how to read the small signs, Mai would have thought that Naru wasn't concerned. However, the small clenching of his jaw was enough for her to see that he was anxious.
She bit her lip and made a quick decision. Her hand took his, and as expected, Naru slightly tensed before relaxing and intertwining their fingers. She then grabbed Gene's hand and found that he did the same. A small smile graced her soft features. The twins were more alike than what they would care to admit.
Drawing courage for the three of them, she began walking towards the door. She smiled when they both followed her with no hesitation, and they kept up at her pace. Once she was at the door, she relinquished her hold on their hands and raised her hand up to press on the doorbell button. She then took a few steps back and stood beside Lin quietly.
Gene stood at the entrance, with Naru by his side. His eyes darted back and forth nervously. With his brother and Lin, he had been taken by surprise. Therefore, he didn't really have the opportunity to feel nervous. Now that wasn't the case. He had envisioned their reunion during the entirety of the flight, which led to several questions.
Would they accept him readily? Would they be horrified? Would they faint?
He stood outside the mansion waiting for a maid to open the door. He tried relaxing and visualizing the scenario in his mind. Once the maid let them in, he would be led to the living room, where he would patiently wait for his mother's arrival. She would be surprised, no doubt, but they would just explain it like he did with Lin and his brother.
Unfortunately, this didn't occur.
The door opened and to everyone's surprise, it wasn't a maid that opened the door. Gene's breath hitched as the beautiful blonde woman stepped out.
Luella Davis.
At seeing her son, Luella beamed. She had clearly mistaken Gene for Naru, who was out of her line of vision. The woman launched herself onto Gene's arms and embraced him tightly. "My baby!" She ignored the fact that his shocked expression was uncharacteristic of her Oliver.
"M-Mom," Gene whispered, wrapping his arms around her tenderly. Luella froze, hearing the emotion in his voice. Had she not known any better, she would have thought it was her Eugene. Oliver never called her mom. It was always "mother." Another thing that caught her attention was that his scent was different.
A movement to her right caught her attention, and the first thing that she noticed was black. The person was wearing black. Her eyes sought out the face only to be surprised to find familiar blue eyes locked with hers.
Her heart hammered when she saw Oliver's tense form in front of her. "O-Oliver?" She trembled while maintaining eye contact with her younger son. If that was Oliver, then who was in her arms?
She pulled back as if she was burned, only to find herself looking into concerned blue orbs. Her eyes darted back and forth wildly. Her breathing became erratic.
"Mother, you need to calm down." Her serious Oliver's voice reached her ears. Oliver gripped her shoulders tightly as her wide eyes were now locked on the splitting image of her deceased son. It couldn't be. Her Gene was dead.
Tears were threatening to spill from her magnificent blue eyes. Her thoughts were going a million miles per minute trying to justify what she was seeing.
"Mother, look at me." She finally locked eyes with her youngest.
"O-Oliver, that…he…Gene," she gasped, finally bursting into tears. Had he not been holding her, she would have dropped to her knees.
Oh, how the fates were cruel. They taunted her with the visage of her beloved child. One that was tragically stolen from her, and this replica of him fooled her bleeding heart into believing that her son was returned to her.
"Mom," Gene whispered taking a step forward, but he stopped when Naru gave him a warning glance. The woman gripped Naru's hands tightly.
"G-Gene?" She asked, slumping forward onto Naru's shoulder. He held her and looked back at his brother.
"A lot has happened, and we can explain everything." Naru informed her maintaining his calm attitude, which contrasted with Gene's anxious expression.
"B-But that's my baby right? That's my Gene? I'm not-" I'm not imagining it. Her eyes were wild and unfocused, yet hopeful. She figured it was a dream, but at the same time she held hope. This was real. Her son was alive.
"Yes, that's Gene," he answered, never changing his tone. She cautiously pulled away from Naru's arms and slowly approached Gene. Her hand cupped his cheek and looked into his eyes. Her son was crying, and in her heart she knew. She didn't know how, but she just knew that this was her Eugene.
She tearfully embraced him, and he desperately returned it. Both of them held each other for a long time as they cried in each other's arms. Mai and Lin remained silent, not wanting to interrupt the heartwarming scene.
.
Martin had taken it a lot calmer than Luella, though he was equally as shocked and affected. He had originally concluded that it was a manifestation or a doppelganger. Both of which were shot down by his son Oliver. As a scientist and investigator himself, Martin understood it with less qualms than Luella.
She kept calling it a divine miracle, and Martin disagreed. He was, no doubt, happy that his son was returned. However, he was disturbed by the necromancer.
They had heard their retellings without interruptions and by the end of it, Luella had been crying again refusing to relinquish her hold on her son. She desperately clung to Gene as if he would disappear if she let go.
Mai and Lin hadn't been present since they felt like the family needed to talk, though Gene would constantly glance at the door, finding comfort that Mai was only a door away. This was not overlooked by Luella, who hid a small secretive smile. As always, her Gene was an open book.
"I'll have Madoka look into it," Martin frowned pensively, interrupting Luella's thoughts. Unlike Gene, Martin was a difficult man to decipher, unless you knew what signs you were looking for.
"You know something," perceptive as always, Oliver was able to read his father's silence. "What is it?"
"I may," Martin admitted. Noticing his sons' expectant gazes, he continued. "There have been numerous dropped cases in our data files relating to grave robbing." Naru and Gene tensed at this bit of information. "As you two already know, we deal with supernatural entities, not physical criminals. Naturally the cases were transferred to the police, and our services were no longer required. Fortunately, we kept copies of the files."
"And why was I not informed of this earlier?" Naru asked tensely. How had he not heard any of this?
Martin's eyes softened. "You were in Japan searching for-" He paused, looking for the right words, though judging by Gene's flinch, he understood. "You had a lot on your mind, and I didn't wish to burden you with crimes that were occurring here in England. I didn't give it much thought at the time, but now I am almost certain that the grave robber is the necromancer."
Silence penetrated the room. Millions of questions buzzed through their minds, though they didn't even know with which to start. Finally, Martin looked up.
"Mai Taniyama," Martin started. His brows were furrowed. His mind was clearly working on overdrive. He was processing and formulating theories. "Tell me more about her."
"Martin, I think that our boys should rest. I'm sure that they're tired," Luella said as she ran her hand through Gene's raven hair.
Her husband inclined his head in agreement.
Luella linked her arms with her twins and realized that she had rudely overlooked their guest, Mai. She and Martin hadn't even introduced themselves to her. She flushed in embarrassment and shame. The girl was the reason why her Gene was alive, and she hadn't even sparred her a second glance earlier.
Though she was going to remedy that soon.
Luella smiled charmingly when she saw a group of people sitting in the living room. She, of course, already knew Masako and Lin, but the rest were all new to her.
"Miss Hara, Lin, it's nice to see you both again," Luella smirked at their startled expressions. She eyed the rest of the group and quickly pinpointed Mai sitting beside Lin. She made sure to speak in Japanese out of respect for her guests. "It's a pleasure to see new faces, I'm Luella Davis, and this is my husband, Martin Davis."
Martin tilted his head in acknowledgement, though nobody found offense to his silence. He was Naru's father, after all.
"Davis-san, it's a pleasure, I'm Osamu Yasuhara. Though you can call me Yasu," Yasuhara charmingly smiled at them.
"John Brown, thank you for accepting us in your home," the humble priest bowed respectfully, Mai, Ayako and Takigawa followed his lead.
Once the introductions were out of the way, Luella spoke again. "No need to thank us. We should be thanking you all for caring so much about our sons." Luella smiled, though once again, her gaze became fixated on Mai.
As if feeling her gaze, the brunette looked up shyly. Luella smiled at her and slowly approached the Japanese beauty.
"Forgive my rude manners, I never introduced myself earlier, Mai."
Mai blinked owlishly before blushing and waving her hands nervously. "It's alright, I completely understand. No need to apologize."
Luella squealed in delight at seeing how sweet and humble Mai was. Had she not been so emotionally drained, Luella would have already been thinking of matchmaking Gene and Mai. They would make such a cute couple!
She took a seat between her sons, who assured her that they weren't tired. She tried joining in the conversations as much as possible, but her mind often wandered to her sons. It felt right to have them sitting on either side of her. She felt…complete.
Her family was whole.
Though…it could always expand. She looked at Mai once again out of the corner of her eye and smiled mischievously.
.
Mai's eyes began to drop tiredly. She tried masking her yawns with the back of her hand, though judging by the blue orbs that were locked on her, she knew that it had been unsuccessful.
"Mother, I believe this discussion can continue in the morning," Naru spoke up. Mai bit the inside of her cheek to stop her giddy smile.
"Oh! How inconsiderate of me, you must all be quite tired. Forgive me dears, I tend to ramble. Martin and I will guide you to your rooms," Luella stood gracefully.
"No need to worry, Mama Davis, we do tend to be a rowdy bunch as well. Time does seem to fly, especially since we've had such good company." Yasu gave her an easy charming smile. Luella giggled, while everyone else groaned at Yasu's familiarity with the twin's mother. Fortunately, Martin wasn't bothered by the statement.
As they made their way to the room, Mai and Naru stayed a few feet behind the rest. Mai gave him a questioning glance since he appeared to be lost in thought. "Naru?"
"Thank you," he spoke softly, almost like a whisper. Thank you for coming. Thank you for staying by my side.
Mai gave him a warm smile and grabbed his hand and pulled it to her lips. She tenderly pressed a kiss on his knuckles. "Don't mention it." I would do anything for you.
"Mai" he breathed her name and pressed a tender kiss on her forehead. It ended too quickly for her liking, but the sensation remained, almost as if he had branded her skin with the feel of his lips. Feeling bold, she pressed a quick chaste kiss on his jaw.
She then covered her burning cheeks from her daring actions and picked up her pace to catch up with the rest. Fortunately, nobody had noticed their exchange since she wasn't ready to hear it.
Naru watched her go with a small smile. His fingers slowly found their way to his jaw, where her lips had been earlier. He shook his head and continued on his way to join the others.
He paused when he saw his mother holding onto Gene's arm, while she chatted with Masako and Ayako. His father was conversing with Lin and John. Takigawa, Yasu and Mai were giggling at something that Yasu said.
Everything in that moment felt just right
