Chapter 17: Dewford gym! Dawn vs Brawly.
Ash and Dawn are finally on their way to challenge the Dewford gym. After meeting up with Trip, Tyson, and an old friend in Gary, the duo must cross this hurdle to get closer to their dreams. How will their challenges go? What will they learn from this battle? Will they be able to overcome Brawly and take the next step towards their respective goals?
Let the chapter begin…
Last time:
"Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a winner!" Brawly said, directing the crowd's attention to Ash, many cheers and applause followed his words as they cheered on Ash and his pokemon for a wonderful battle.
"Thanks, Brawly, I really appreciate it!" Ash thanked the gym leader and collected his badge from Brawly, he held it in his palm for a bit then showed it to his pokemon, who all cried out in joy.
"Alright, I earned the Knuckle badge!" Ash hollered out loud, earning the cheers of his pokemon and the crowd.
Following the events of the last chapter:
Ash stood on the field, holding his badge with pride as his pokemon were crying out in joy, he was greeted by his friends momentarily, Dawn the most enthusiastic to see him, she lifted her arms and gave Ash a high five, offering him her congratulations. Gary, Tyson, Trip, and Briney followed suit as they all congratulated Ash on the victory with fist bumps, high fives, and great big grins.
"That was some great battling there Ash." Gary applauded, "you and your pokemon were full of energy."
"Well after your victory yesterday I just could not slack off and fall behind," Ash stated, "I had to show you my battling style and technique."
"Well, you certainly did just that!" Dawn said, "that was a great performance."
"Thanks, Dawn, but it's your turn to battle now and my turn to cheer for you." Ash responded.
"Right, I'll go and change right away, Brawly, I'll be just a minute." Dawn turned to Brawly and stated.
"Take all the time you need, Dawn." Brawly smiled, looking at the determined trainer.
Dawn gave him a nod and turned to the group, they motioned her to go change and she left quickly. Trevor approached the group, a big grin on his face.
"Well done young lad, that was a great battle." Trevor laughed, "you managed to take out one of Brawlys strongest pokemon."
"Well I have my pokemon to thank for that," Ash responded, "they put in all the hard work, though I guess I could take a bit of credit for the training regimes."
"You are allowed some credit Ash," Brawly said, "you are their trainer as much as they are your pokemon, you got them to become this strong through lots of care and discipline, so I'd say you did something right there."
"Well…thanks I guess." Ash scratched his head, a bit taken back by the compliment.
They continued to converse until Dawn ran out to the field, this time in her normal attire.
"Okay Brawly," Dawn panted, "I'm ready for the battle."
"You sure you don't need a breather?" Brawly questioned.
Dawn shook her hand, "no need to worry, I'm fine, really." She said as she took one more deep breath.
"Don't listen to her. Whenever she says that I get really worried." Ash said as he passed a water bottle towards Dawn. With much gratitude and a death glare, she took the water bottle from Ash and drank from it.
"Thanks, Ash, though I could've done without the other comment." Dawn said as she returned the water bottle.
"What fun would that be?" Ash laughed as Dawn shook her head.
"Well Dawn, are you ready to battle now?" Brawly asked in an amused fashion.
"Yes, should I go spin the wheel?" Dawn asked.
"By all means Dawn." Brawly responded.
"We should head up to the stands." Trip motioned the group as they departed from Brawly and Dawn, Ash mouthed good luck at Dawn and retreated to the stands, when the 4 trainers reached their seat, they sat down and got ready to observe the battle.
Dawn took the wheel and spun it, this time taking a long time to stop, it spun quickly as it landed once again on a tile with 3 pokemon faces on it.
"Looks like this time it will be another 3v3 battle." Brawly stated, "take us away, Trevor."
Trevor gave a light nod as he turned towards Dawn and once again asked, "May I have your battle details please challenger?"
"Sure," Dawn answered excitedly, "My name is Dawn Berlitz and I am from Twinleaf town of the Sinnoh region."
Trevor gave Dawn a nod as he turned towards the crowd and the center of the field, "Buckle up ladies and Gentlemen as we will now start the gym battle between the Brawly and Dawn Berlitz from Twinleaf town of The Sinnoh Region!" Trevor started, "This battle will be 3 vs 3, the challenger may switch out her pokemon at any time, Brawly may not. Once all of the pokemon of the same party faints, the battle will be concluded."
"Let's go, Dawn!" Ash cheered.
"Please don't tell me you're going to emerge in a cheer-leading outfit later too?!" Tyson teased Ash, earning the chuckle and snickers of the nearby audience members.
Ash decided to ignore him and continued to watch Dawn, who gave him a large smile before turning her focus back onto Brawly and the battlefield.
"Alright, let's go partners!" she called out, calling out her Mudkip, Riolu and Ralts.
"I'm excited to see what Dawn will show us in this battle." Trip wondered.
"Care to share some inside information with us, Ash?" Tyson asked as he turned towards Ash.
"Nope, I got nothing here." Ash responded firmly.
"Well then, we'll just have to see what Dawn has up her sleeve." Gary stated.
"Here's to hoping that it's a good battle." Briney stated as Whismur gave an exciting cry.
"It will be," Ash reassured, "I'm certain of that at the very least."
"Let's see how you make of this one." Brawly said, enlarging a Pokeball within his hand, "come on out Meditite."
Dawn pulled out her Pokedex at this peculiar pokemon.
Meditite, the Meditate Pokémon. Meditite uses meditation to increase its power and build up its mental energy. It never skips a single day of yoga training and is said to eat only one berry a day.
Hmm so that's a Meditite Dawn thought, Ralts seems like a worthy pick here so we should probably go with that.
She looks towards Ralts, who returns the gaze quickly. The Feeling pokemon looked at dawn for a moment and cries out in confirmation as she knows what Dawn is trying to hint at here.
"Well, I know just the pick!" Dawn started, "Ralts, let's show them what we're made of!"
Ralts cried out in excitement as she jumps forward, meeting the Meditite on the battlefield. The two pokemon stood there, still for a moment, before they turned around to their respective trainers and gave them a nod.
"Mudkip, Riolu cheer us on!" Dawn said to her two pokemon.
Mud Mudkip
Ri Riolu
"Let the battle commence!" Trevor announced.
"Ralts, use Magical Leaf!" Dawn called out.
"Meditite, dodge that attack!" Brawly hollered.
Ralts raised her arms and unleashed a barrage of green leaves, sending them straight towards Meditite, who jumped up and evaded the attack without too much trouble.
"Magical Leaf again!" Dawn followed up.
"Let's show them our nifty trick." Brawly ordered as Meditite jumped into the air.
Meditite's eyes glowed a blue color as it flew across the battlefield, dodging the Magical leaf attack.
"Use Force Palm!"
Meditite traveled towards Ralts, it's palms glowed a bright blue as a blast of energy as it planted its palm on Ralts' head. The energy pushed Ralts back, leaving her slightly bothered, as a yellow aura of electricity crackled around her.
"Looks like the secondary effect of Force Palm took its toll on Ralts." Brawly chuckled, but what he did not expect was Dawn's reaction, when she sported a confident smirk.
"Well, the playing field should be leveled soon." She said as the horns on Ralts' head glowed briefly before Meditite was inflicted with the same yellow aura of electricity.
"Ralts' ability is Synchronize." Dawn added, "so the paralysis inflicted on Ralts was reflected onto Meditite, so I guess this mostly changes nothing."
"I have to say I am pleasantly surprised by the abilities of your pokemon," Brawly complimented.
"We're not done yet, Ralts, use Magical Leaf." Dawn ordered.
"Dodge it with Double Team." Brawly hollered.
Ralts summoned a barrage of leaves and hurled them towards Meditite. The attack failed to damage the Meditite as it summoned a large number of copies of itself, successfully dodging the attack.
"Don't let them get away Ralts, blow away the copies of Meditite!" Dawn cried out.
Ralts moved her arms upwards as she began to control the trajectory of the leaves, she guided them towards the multiple airborne Meditite's. The attack removed all the copies of Meditite, eventually finding the host. It battered Meditite, sending it flying back. Meditite recovered quickly from the attack as it jumped towards its trainer, staring down the Ralts with utter focus.
"That was some very impressive usage of Ralts' psychic powers." Brawly complimented.
"Thanks for the compliment, we trained hard to perfect the use of her powers," Dawn replied, "use Calm Mind."
"Meditite, counter their power up by using Work Up!" Brawly responded.
Ralts' body glowed white as its special attack and defense rose, while Meditite's body glowed red, increasing its attack and special attack. Both pokemon remained in their positions for a while as they powered up. The auras surrounding their bodies disappearing gradually as they completed their stat enhancements.
"Seems like a different battle style from Ash's one already." Gary started.
"Yeah, instead of the heated, direct combat that Brawly and I had for our battles," Ash agreed, "this is a much more thought out battle, and that is certainly exciting to watch."
"Let's see how Dawn matches up against that, though it seems like she is taking the initiative more than I would have expected," Tyson said.
"Are you really surprised by that?" Trip questioned Tyson, "we all know her battle style."
"Can't argue with that." Tyson responded.
"Ralts, use Psybeam." Dawn hollered.
"Meditite, use Force Palm." Brawly responded.
Ralts fired off a multicolored beam that Meditite sidesteps easily, it's body glowed a crimson red as it jumped towards Ralts unleashing its Force Palm attack.
"Ralts, blow it away with Disarming Voice!" Dawn ordered.
Ralts waited until Meditite was a close distance in front of her before she unleashed a large sound wave attack, pushing the meditate pokemon back. The attack disoriented Meditite briefly before it shook it off without too much trouble.
"Why did Meditite glow red?" Dawn asked surprisingly, "I thought it only drew power from its hands when it performs a force palm attack."
"Nice observational skills, that is the effect of Work Up." Brawly explained, "the attack powers the user up, and then subsequent attacks have that added effect.
"Interesting. Ralts, let's power up again, use Calm Mind!" Dawn hollered.
"Meditite, let's do the same, use Work Up!" Brawly responded.
Ralts and Meditite used their power-up moves respectively and glowed in white and red. The aura dissipated around them as they stood there, ready for their next order.
"Meditite, use Shadow Ball!" Brawly ordered.
"Counter that with Psybeam!" Dawn hollered.
Both pokemon took some time to charge up their attack and released the energy when they felt like it was at a suitable power level. The two attacks traveled towards each other quickly, barely missing the other. Instead of colliding with the opposition, the attacks blew each other away, sending both of them crashing into the wall.
Both pokemon stood up before eyeing each other. Meditite gave a light smirk before falling onto the ground, signaling its defeat.
"Meditite is unable to battle, the winner of this round is Ralts!" Trevor announced.
Dawn sighed a breath of relief as Ralts sat there, looking exhausted. Dawn smiled as she greeted the pokemon, who looked at Dawn with joy and pride.
Brawly, on the other hand, recalled Meditite and gave a wide grin at his challenger.
"Both you and Ash have surprised me a lot today," Brawly exclaimed, "let's see how you make of this one."
He produced a Pokeball and tossed it into the air, revealing an unfamiliar pokemon.
Out of the Pokeball jumped out a bipedal lizard-like pokemon with large eyes and exposed teeth, it had a tough skin guarding its abdomen as it eyed Dawn and Mudkip carefully.
Tyson took out his Pokedex, having never seen this pokemon before, he scanned it for its information.
Scraggy, the Shedding Pokémon. The lower half of Scraggy's body is covered by a tough rubbery skin. When someone makes eye contact, it responds with a Headbutt.
"Wow, talk about a feisty pokemon." Gary commented.
"Scraggy is native to the Unova region and they are one of the more aggressive pokemon there." Trip explained.
"Ralts return, take a good rest." Dawn recalled her pokemon, and she jumped back towards Dawn, taking her time to rest beside Mudkip and Riolu.
"That was smart, the battle was a close call." Brawly commented, "so who's the next one up?"
"Hmm…" Dawn looked down at her two other pokemon, "I think…"
Riolu and Mudkip looked at Dawn and each other. In no time Riolu motioned Mudkip to go, with Mudkip nodding and giving Dawn a look of affirmation.
"Alright, looks like we have reached a decision." Dawn turned towards Brawly, "Mudkip, let's do this."
Mudkip walked towards the battlefield, giving Brawly and Tyrogue a look before giving a confident cry.
Mud Mudkip
"Let the battle commence!" Trevor announced.
"Mudkip, use Water Pulse." Dawn ordered.
"Scraggy, use Headbutt to break it apart." Brawly responded.
Mudkip unleashed a torrent of water towards Scraggy who looked at it with no care, it pummeled through the attack with a clean Headbutt attack, it then traveled towards Mudkip, aimed at her head, and landed a clean critical hit, knocking Mudkip towards the ground.
"Mudkip, use Mud-Slap." Dawn called out.
"Dodge it and use Brick Break." Brawly hollered.
Once again, with swift and nimble movements, Scraggy dodged the attack and reached Mudkip in no time, knocking down onto Mudkip with a powerful attack. Mudkip stood up and shook her head, feeling the effect of the attack.
Hmm, we might need a new approach, we need to limit Scraggy's speed. Dawn thought to herself.
"Not calling out any orders?" Brawly smirked, "well then Scraggy Double Team then use Brick Break."
Dawn brought her focus back on the battle, eyeing the movement of the Scraggy.
"Mudkip stay there, don't do anything yet, just use the fins on your head to scout its movement." She called out, motioning Mudkip to stand still.
Scraggy produced many copies of itself and moved around Mudkip, aiming to confuse it. However, Mudkip did not take the bait, keeping her eyes focused on a singular Scraggy copy. She moved her fin, detecting the air around herself for movement. As Scraggy attempted to confuse it, it slowly got a sense of the path that Scraggy is moving to and fro and captured a pattern. Dawn surveyed the battlefield before she decided it was time to act.
"Dodge now and use Ice Beam." Dawn called for an attack.
Mudkip reacted quickly and jumped to the right side, dodging the attack from Scraggy. She then fired a beam of energy that traveled quickly towards Scraggy.
"Dodge it!" Brawly hollered.
Scraggy jumped back and barely dodged the attack, creating some distance between the two, the attack created a small block of ice on the ground that caught Brawly and Dawn's attention. Dawn looked at Scraggy and smirked, concluding a strategy to use.
"Mudkip, use Ice Beam on the ground." Dawn called out.
Mudkip responded by unleashing an ice-cold energy beam that spread out, covering the surface of the ground, leaving the area between Mudkip and Scraggy completely frozen.
"Hmm, I don't know what you're planning, but this certainly is interesting." Brawly called out.
"Well, you'll just have to find out, now, use Water Pulse Mudkip." Dawn followed up.
Mudkip unleashed a torrent of water towards Scraggy, who tried to sidestep it, though it managed to successfully dodge the attack, it slipped and fell due to the ice.
"Alright, Mudkip, use Mud-Slap." Dawn smirked as her plan came to fruition.
Mudkip fired a large barrage of mud that struck Scraggy on the head, blurring its vision.
"Scraggy use Brick Break!" Brawly hollered.
Scraggy jumped towards Mudkip trying to land the attack on her, but due to his blurry vision, he missed Mudkip completely, crashing onto the ice and hurting itself instead.
"Well, looks my plan worked. Let's wrap this up, Mudkip use Water Pulse." Dawn ordered.
Mudkip unleashed a torrent of water landing perfectly onto Scraggy, the energy throwing it towards the wall, and knocking it out as it crashed.
"Scraggy is unable to battle, the winner of this round is Mudkip!" Trevor announced.
"That was some intense battling." Tyson commented.
"Yeah it was great, but I didn't expect Dawn and Mudkip to win that." Ash added.
"Well Brawly has one more pokemon, while Dawn still has Mudkip, Ralts, and Riolu," Trip said, "she should take this pretty easily."
"Let's not jinx it, after all, Brawly is a gym leader, he's not going to make it easy for her." Gary responded.
"I have to say that was some great battling technique, Dawn." Brawly complimented, "you managed to make that strategy work."
"Thank Brawly." Dawn accepted the compliment, she then turned towards Mudkip and called out, "Mudkip, return and take a good rest."
Mudkip gave a quick growl and jumped back towards Dawn, leaving the battlefield.
"Looks like I'm down to my absolute ace." Brawly said as he called out another pokemon, "I present to you my most trusty partner, Hariyama!"
In front of Dawn emerged a large, humanoid pokemon, the evolved version of Makuhita, a pokemon that Tyson had, Dawn looked at it with lots of focus, knowing that the pokemon is quite powerful in battle.
"So, who will you be choosing?" Brawly asked.
Dawn looked at her pokemon for a brief moment, "Riolu, since he hasn't been able to contribute yet." Dawn answered.
Riolu gave a quick nod and jumped towards the battlefield, eyeing the Hariyama with a focused glance.
"Since both sides are ready, let the battle commence!" Trevor announced.
"Hariyama, let's break the ice as a welcome message." Brawly called out.
Hariyama focused its energy onto its palm and slammed it into the ground, the shock wave broke all the ice, forming small puddles of water.
What power. "Riolu, let's start this off with Power-Up Punch." Dawn hollered.
"Oh no you don't, Hariyama, stifle their plans with a Bullet Punch attack!" Brawly cried out.
Riolu was about to dash towards Hariyama, but before Riolu could make a second step, Hariyama phased out of his sight and emerged swiftly in front of Riolu. It clapped its fists together, releasing a metallic shock wave that knocked Riolu out of his element, forcing him back as he clutched his head in annoyance.
Rio Riolu
"Good recovery," Dawn encouraged, "use Power-Up Punch again."
"Use Thunderpunch." Brawly ordered.
Riolu and Hariyama ran at each other with their attacks, their fists colliding as they remain in a stalemate, however, Hariyama pushed Riolu back, planting his fist into Riolu.
Meanwhile, Riolu bounced backward, his fists glowed with an orange aura.
"The secondary effect of Power-Up Punch, huh," Brawly examined the pokemon, "let's respond with Bulk Up!"
Hariyama flexed its body as it glowed a bright crimson color, receiving its own power up from Bulk Up.
"Looks like Brawly managed to power up with Bulk Up." Trip commented.
"This shouldn't be too much of a trouble, Brawly used Bulk Up in response to the effect of Power-Up Punch, and every time Riolu uses it, he gets an additional power-up." Gary said in response.
"But Hariyama is already an inherently bulky pokemon." Tyson pointed out, "receiving any sort of defensive power will make Dawn's attacks weaker.
"We'll have to see how she deals with this then." Ash pointed out.
"Riolu, use Vacuum Wave." Dawn ordered.
"Block the attack!" Brawly responded.
Riolu released a stream of energy towards Hariyama, who blocked it with ease using its hands. The attack broke into a small explosion as it was destroyed by Hariyama, who stepped out of the dust cloud without being too affected.
"That was an impressive attack," Brawly started, "it would've been effective if the opponent wasn't Hariyama."
Dawn gritted her teeth, she decided it was time to test out a new move.
"Riolu start running with agility."
Riolu focused all of his energy as he dashed across the battlefield with considerable speed. He was so fast that it almost looked like a blur. Hariyama stood though, looking unfazed.
"That's some considerable speed, but Hariyama has dealt with faster opponents." Brawly commented, "use Bullet Punch."
After eyeing the field for just a second, Hariyama dashed forward and raised its fist. Before long it found Riolu in his trajectory and knocked it swiftly towards the ground.
Dawn grew warier and warier of this pokemon as took a moment. She needed a different plan.
"Return, Riolu." She called out, as Riolu leaped back towards Dawn, getting some rest time.
"Ralts, let's go." Dawn called out. In response, Ralts cried and jumped onto the battlefield.
"Let's start this off with Magical Leaf!" Dawn ordered.
Ralts generated a lot of multicolored leaves and sent them flying towards Hariyama. Hariyama folded its hands in front of itself and took the attack. The attack erupted in front of it, creating an explosive cloud. But when it dissipated, it revealed the Hariyama, unscathed. Brawly smirked in response to the defense of his pokemon.
Okay, so I have an idea of how tough it is.
"Ralts, use Calm Mind." Dawn ordered.
Ralts' body glowed a bright white as she raised her special attack and defense. She took in this power-up and eyed Hariyama.
"Hariyama, use Bullet Punch." Brawly ordered as Hariyama dashed across the field towards Ralts.
"Dodge it." Dawn hollered.
Ralts managed to dodge to the side, barely getting out of reach of the attack
"Now, use Psybeam." Dawn called out.
Ralts fired a beam attack that hit Hariyama in the chest, pushing it back considerably, it took a moment to gather itself before responding with a sound of satisfaction. Hariyama was caught off guard, and it was a bit impressed.
"A clean hit, and it looks like Hariyama took that well, you are a worthy challenge." Brawly commented.
"I'll take it." Dawn smirked, "Ralts, we're gonna focus more."
"Hariyama, let's waste no time, finish this with Dynamic Punch." Brawly hollered.
Hariyama's fist crackled with energy as it glowed a bright red as it jumped up and speeding towards Ralts.
"Ralts, use Disarming Voice." Dawn hollered.
Ralts conjured a huge blast that formed a barrier between herself and Hariyama. The super-effective attack managed to push Hariyama back for a while, but Hariyama managed to shake it off and connected its fist with Ralts, knocking it backward. Ralts flew into the ground, creating a small dust cloud, and then, it revealed an unconscious Ralts as it dissipated.
"Ralts is unable to battle, the winner of this round is Hariyama!" Trevor announced.
Dawn sighed as she went over to the field and picked up Ralts, who gave her a weak smile.
"You did well, have a great rest." Dawn said, laying her down by Mudkip and Riolu, who gave her looks of concern, she gave a weak cry to let them know that she is fine, then she closed her eyes to take a nap.
"Ralts did really well, it was unfortunate that she took such a strong hit." Tyson commented.
"Well, that attack was the real signal that Brawly means business." Trip said.
"Yeah, Dawn's got an uphill battle in front of her." Gary said.
Briney and the trainers found themselves unconsciously shifting forward, the battle was intense, and they started to really lean into the path that the battle is headed towards.
"Let's go Riolu." Dawn called out. I think I know what needs to be done.
Riolu jumped backed onto the battlefield, eyeing his enormous opponent carefully.
"Since both sides are ready, let the battle commence!" Trevor announced.
"Riolu, start running." Dawn hollered.
Riolu dashed across the field, running in straight circles, aiming to confuse his opponent.
"Hariyama, use Bullet Punch." Brawly ordered.
Hariyama shot forward, aiming a fist towards Riolu, who barely managed to dodge it.
That's it. Dawn thought I think I found something.
"Riolu, use Vacuum Wave non-stop." Dawn ordered.
Riolu turned around to look at Dawn for a second, she gave him a confident nod to which he responded in kind, he then shifted his focus back towards the battle and produced a barrage of Vacuum Waves. They impacted Hariyama, who took the attack with its hands, a small explosion happened once again.
"Riolu, use your Power-Up Punch attack, and aim for Hariyama's Legs." Dawn ordered.
Riolu sprinted forward, and as the small explosion cleared out, he landed two clean hits on Hariyama's left leg, the pokemon stumbled slightly, taking the hit but crouching on one knee. A crimson aura appeared around Riolu, signaling another power-up.
"A well-coordinated attack, I like it." Brawly commented, "you're no pushover, Dawn."
"Thanks, Riolu made it possible." Dawn stated.
"Well, we'll see how he takes this, use Dynamic Punch." Brawly called out.
"Riolu, use Agility to dodge then use Force Palm." Dawn ordered.
Riolu ran swiftly towards the side and dodged the brutal attack from Hariyama, he then emerged behind Hariyama and planted his palm into Hariyama's left leg, releasing a paralyzing energy blast that engulfed most of Hariyama's body, however, Hariyama quickly recovered and slammed a powerful Dynamic Punch into Riolu and slammed him into the wall. A light dust cloud quickly dispersed as Riolu was unconscious.
"Riolu is unable to battle, the winner of this round is Hariyama!" Trevor announced.
"Damn, Dawn was so close." Gary sighed.
"Well, she's got one more shot with Mudkip." Trip added.
"She'll be fine." Ash reassured.
"Yeah, Dawn's got this." Tyson exclaimed.
Dawn walked towards Riolu and patted him on the head and placed him next to Ralts.
"You did well, buddy." Dawn encouraged, she then turned towards Mudkip, "let's finish this."
Mudkip gave her a firm nod as she jumped towards the battlefield, getting ready for the battle.
"Since both sides are ready, let the final round of this gym battle commence!" Trevor announced.
"Mudkip use Water Pulse." Dawn ordered.
"Hariyama, blast it away with Thunder Punch." Brawly ordered.
Mudkip conjured a large round sphere of pressurized water and fired it at Hariyama, who had no trouble in blasting it away with a powerful Thunder Punch attack.
"Not a bad attack Dawn." Brawly complimented, "not enough for Hariyama though."
"Then try this for size, Mudkip use Double Team then use Water Pulse." Dawn hollered.
"Deflect it all back with Bullet Punch." Brawly ordered
Mudkip created a dozen copies of herself, surrounding the Hariyama, she then leaped into the air, creating an equal amount of pressurized water spheres, she then fired all of her attacks at Hariyama.
Hariyama also leaped into the air, doing its best at blocking all of the attacks, but it suddenly stumbled as it felt its legs freeze, it missed one sphere, and the rest hit, landing a clean hit. The attack blew Hariyama back onto the ground, it crashed into the ground, creating a large crater.
"Not bad." Brawly remarked, "looks like the effects of the Force Palm have kicked in."
"Wow, Dawn had that all planned out." Tyson exclaimed.
"Yep, a victory achieved by all." Trip added.
"Dawn needs to do this fast though." Ash reminded.
"With how things, our, I think she can manage to do it." Gary said.
"Are you enjoying yourself, dear?" Mr. Briney asked Whismur as they laughed in excitement.
Whis Whismur
"Mudkip, let's not give them any time to rest, use Double Team and Water Pulse again." Dawn ordered.
Mudkip repeated her previous sequence, surrounding Hariyama before firing multiple Water Pulse attacks.
"Hariyama, use Thunder Punch to form a barrier." Brawly hollered.
Hariyama took his fists and slammed them together, powering up a huge electric fist, and spun around, deflecting every single attack coming it's way.
"Mudkip now, use Mud-Slap on the ground below Hariyama." Dawn called out.
Mudkip and her clones all dug up some mud and threw it towards the ground next to Hariyama, it gathered up and suddenly the spinning Hariyama was trapped, it also slipped as the water and the mud becomes slippery and sticky.
"Hariyama, get up and use Bullet Punch to get out of the mud." Brawly hollered.
"Oh no you don't, use Ice Beam to freeze the mud." Dawn called out.
Mudkip used her Ice Beam attack and quickly froze the muddy ground, guaranteeing that Hariyama would be trapped.
"Now, let's finish this with Water Pulse, the way we practiced." Dan called out.
Mudkip and her clones charged up multiple Water Pulse spheres, they leaped up and combined them into a huge Water bubble and sent it crashing down at Hariyama. The attack engulfed it and erupted into a cloud of dust.
When the dust settled, Hariyama was unconscious.
"Hariyama is unable to battle, the winner is Mudkip, this concludes the gym battle and Dawn Berlitz from Twinleaf Town has won!" Trevor announced.
"Awesome Dawn!" Ash and Gary hollered.
"Way to go!" Trip and Tyson cheered.
"They did it." Mr. Briney smiled as he looked at Whismur who was cheering enthusiastically.
Dawn cheered and ran towards Mudkip who cheered in response. She jumped up happily and was suddenly engulfed in bright white light.
As she evolved, she grew fins on her cheeks, and her tail grew bigger and longer, and when the transformation was complete, Mudkip was totally different.
"Mudkip?" Dawn looked at her new pokemon in confusion while taking out her Pokedex to scan it.
Marshtomp, the Mud Fish Pokémon. Marshtomp is the evolved form of Mudkip. Its body is enclosed in a membrane, allowing it to live on land. Its lower body is well-developed, so it's capable of walking on two legs.
"Woah, and you learned Ice Punch too?" Dawn exclaimed, "congratulations, this is awesome!"
Marsh Marshtomp
Riolu and Ralts joined the Mud Fish pokemon and celebrated her growth, they danced in a circle and gave each other high fives, and clapped their hands.
"Congratulations Dawn," Brawly remarked as he approached her, "it is my distinct pleasure to present you with the Knuckle badge. You earned it."
Like Ash before her, Dawn took the badge with gratitude and showed it to her pokemon, who jumped even more excitedly.
"Nice, we got the Knuckle Badge!" Dawn hollered one last time, drowning in the cheers of the crowd, and her own delight.
With the crowd dissipating and the gym emptying, the group joined together and were chatting with Brawly.
"You two are quite an interesting pair of trainers, I have to say." Brawly complimented Ash and Dawn, "I haven't quite been pushed in this way before, Roxanne was not kidding when she told me about your skills."
Ash and Dawn just chuckled, feeling pretty flustered about the compliments.
"So what are you doing next?" Brawly asked.
"I was told by the president of the Devon Corporation that Steven Stone was going to be here." Ash replied, "so Dawn and I are going to look for him."
"We need to deliver something to him, do you know where he might be?" Dawn asked.
Brawly stood up and walked outside the gym, motioning the group to follow him.
"He'll be in those mountain ranges on the north side of the island." Brawly said, pointing into a forest, "I will accompany you and show you where it is."
"Well, what about you 3? What are you planning on doing now?" Brawly turned towards Trip, Tyson, and Gary.
"I'll be staying with Ash and Dawn," Gary responded, "it's been a while since I've seen Ash, so it'll be nice to spend some more time together."
"We're staying too." Tyson replied.
"We have a common destination." Trip added.
"Well, looks like a merry bunch, fit for adventure." Brawly laughed as the group concluded their conversation.
"We must be off." Ash said, "we need to get a place to stay for the day tomorrow."
"Alright then." Brawly waved, "Oh, and one last thing, Dawn."
"Yeah Brawly?" Dawn asked.
