Chapter 9: The surprising turn of events
Eventually they got Sara to and in the hospital, and as she was getting settled in the room, a female Hawaiian native doctor, who got her medical degree at Harvard, and had a slim build with long black hair that was in a bun, walked in to check on her patient, who was freaking out with worry.
Once the doctor started checking for any sound of the baby, Sara and Grissom's heart were racing like they had never raced before while they held each other's hands tightly, and even though it wasn't that long, it felt like two lifetimes to them before they finally heard the heartbeat, but then Sara gasped as she heard something else a moment later. "Is that two heartbeats?"
Grissom heard it a second later, and the doctor smiled with a nod. "I believe so Mrs. Grissom, want to have a look?"
Sara and Grissom immediately nodded with smiles while she setup it up, a few moments later their two babies popped up on the screen and their eyes immediately teared up, then he kissed her temple and whispered. "You're unbelievable, honey."
She smiled shyly before the doctor asked again. "Do you want to know what they are?"
They both looked overwhelmed at the turn of events that happened so quickly, but like their other pregnancies, they wanted to know before hand.
Flashback
Later November, 1987
After the usual check-up, Sara's doctor asked if she wanted to see what her baby was, so Sara looked over at Grissom, and he spoke with emotion as he took her hand in his. "It's up to you, honey."
Even though knowing what they were having was going to make it harder to let him or her go when they had to, she couldn't go through the rest of her pregnancy thinking and calling their baby an 'it' or 'the baby', she just couldn't do it, so she nodded while saying. "I want to know, I have to know."
Grissom nodded before he lifted her hand up to his lips and kissed it, and after another moment, they nodded before Sara looked at her doctor and gave her a nod. "We would like to know, please."
One more moment later, the doctor gave her a small smile and said. "Ms. Sidle & Mr. Grissom, say hello to your little girl."
Tears started to go down both of their cheeks as they looked at their little girl on the screen.
Sara sniffled as she said softly. "It's my dream, my dream has come true, it's a girl."
Grissom took a shaky breath as he whispered. "Yes it is, and I don't care if it's all wavy, she's the most beautiful thing I ever seen."
They chuckled as they enjoyed the image on the small screen.
Mid December, 2000
"Alright, Mr. & Mrs. Grissom, do you want to know what you're having?"
There was no hesitation when Sara replied, since they talked about this for months. "Yes, we would like to know, please."
The doctor nodded, then a moment later, the parents finally heard. "Congratulations mom & dad, you'll be having a son."
With tears in their eyes, they looked at one another, and she asked softly. "Still the most beautiful thing you ever seen?"
Grissom smiled widely with a nod as he moved his mouth towards hers and whispered softly. "Yes, absolutely."
They kiss softly on the lips before he moves and kissed her on the forehead, whispering his love against her skin before looking at the screen again, then she slipped her fingers through his as she whispered in return. "I love you too."
He smiled while they enjoyed the image on the small screen.
Late February 2003
"Congratulations mommy & Daddy, you are having another son!"
They were all smiles, but Sara couldn't help but smirk without thinking. "With all these boys in my household, I'm going to have to start praying for the next one to be a girl."
Their doctor chuckled while Grissom instantly looked at his wife with wide-eyes after hearing her comment. "The next one?"
Sara, realized what she said out loud, smiled shyly. "I mean, well.. if there is a next one."
Softly, he asked. "Do you want there to be a next one?"
Feeling a little overwhelmed, she cleared her throat. "I uh, I don't know, maybe we should talk about that another time." She then smirked. "Let me get through this one before you start planning on convincing me about another one."
Grissom smiled with love in his eyes. "You got it."
They kissed softly, whispered their love for another, before they once again, like they did the previous times, enjoyed the image on the small screen.
End of Flashback
They both looked at the doctor and nodded while Grissom spoke. "Yes please."
"Now there is chance they could be shy and you'll have to wait on your next check-up."
Sara cuts her off with a smirk, even though she was still nervous to be here. "Being shy is nothing new in this family."
She chuckled before she smiled a little wider. "Alright, I'm seeing with baby number 1 being...a girl."
Sara sniffled. "Awe a girl, babe."
Grissom nodded with a smile, holding on to his emotions before the doctor spoke again. "And baby number 2 is another girl, congratulations. I'll give you a moment."
Even though their attention was on the screen, they nodded before the doctor stepped out of the room, Grissom took her hand in his and kissed it. "I still can't believe this, two this time."
Sara sniffled. "Are you happy with this?"
Grissom turned to look at his wife with so much emotion while he spoke softly. "I am more than happy with this, honey. I just want them both to be ok."
She nodded as a few tears went down her cheeks. "Me too, and I'll do whatever I have to to make sure they will be, I'll even take time off work if I have to. I just don't want to lose them."
Grissom nodded as he moved closer to her so he could wrap his arm around her shoulders as they let out a few tears, hoping this was just a scare and their babies will be ok.
10 minutes later
After another check-up the doctor told them they could have visitors, but didn't want it crowded so she limited to three at time, so Sara asked for her kids first.
Melissa and the boys headed for their mother's room the minute the doctor allowed it, and when they walked in the room, the boys ran to her bed, and Grissom picked up Roby before placing him on the bed so he could hug his mother while Melissa asked with worry in her tone. "Is everything ok?"
They both nodded with smiles, then Sara said with her eyes beaming. "Yes, your sisters are doing just fine."
Melissa's eyes got wide as she gasped. "Sisters? Plural, as in Twins?"
As Sara nodded, Arthur, also looked at his mother in shock, of course more in shock since he didn't know about the baby in the first place. "Wait, mommy, you're having a baby...I mean two babies?"
Sara looked at her oldest son and nodded while she reached for her son's hand. "I'm sorry you're finding out like this, honey, but yes I'm going to have two babies, and they are your sisters."
Arthur started to smile as it sunk in that he was going to be an older brother to not only siblings, but two sisters, then he asked. "Can I see?"
"Griss?"
Grissom took the sonogram picture from the table he was closer to and handed it to Arthur. "Here you go, bud."
While the two older siblings were looking at the picture, Sara kissed her youngest and asked. "Do you have any questions, sweetheart?"
Little Roby nodded as he asked an innocent question, or at least he thought it was an innocent one. "How did you get two in there, mommy?"
They all chuckled before Sara smiled. "That can be talked about at another time, but good question."
He nodded before he asked another question, this one he had a more serious face to. "Will I still be your baby?"
With tears in her eyes, Sara asked. "I thought you were a big boy now?"
Roby shook his head and hugged his mother tighter. "No, I still want to be your baby."
With a sniffle, Sara ran her hand up and down his back as she whispered. "Oh, sweetheart, you'll always be my baby, no matter how many kids come into this family." She looked at her oldest ones while she continued. "Remember all of you are, being parents to you all has been a dream come true." She looked at her daughter and finished. "No matter how short it has been."
With tears in Melissa's eyes, she replied. "Well it's about to become longer and a lot closer." When they looked at her with curiosity, she continued. "We were going to tell everybody at the wedding reception, but he has given me the go-ahead to tell you now, Deion and I are moving to LA." Not for the first time this evening, they looked shocked while she continued with a smile and nod. "The reason why, or should I say one of the reasons, we were there for Thanksgiving was because Deion had a head coaching job interview at UCLA, which we didn't want to say anything until it became official, and so this evening, the athletic director called and told him he had gotten the job."
They gasped before Sara asked. "For real?"
Melissa nodded with a smile. "Yes, for real, so I hope you don't mind..."
Grissom cuts her off while he stood up and brought her in his arms. "Of course we don't mind, and you can even stay at the house if you need a place until you two can get on your feet."
"Thank you. We can talk more about that at another time."
They nodded while Grissom pulled back, then Sara continued. "Now, they want me to stay over night, just as a precaution, but I should be out sometime tomorrow."
She looked at Melissa, but she didn't even have to say anything because she said it before her mother could open her mouth. "Don't worry about the boys, they'll be ok, right guys?"
While they were happy they'll get to spend time with their sister, they were still worried about their mother, and Sara tried to reassure them the best she could before she asked for some hugs and kisses so they could leave, and once they left, in came Mrs. Grissom, Kim and Hailey, which they also got the news about the babies, and while Sara and Grissom didn't want to tell them like this, they wanted to reassure them that they'll be ok. Plus, they couldn't hold it in any longer even if they wanted to, at this point they wanted to shout it to the world they were soon to become parents to two girls.
After the last of the guests had left, they did one more check-up before Grissom crawled into her bed and held her tight as they released their tears of relief, both vowing to do whatever it took to bring them into this world safely, because losing them, even one, was not an option.
They already knew how it felt like to lose a child, and they weren't planning on going through that again, especially knowing it would be a permanent loss this time.
A few days later/the night before the wedding
While the boys were with their grandmother, and cuddled together on the bed, Grissom spoke as he ran his thumb up and down her stomach. "You know I can just stay here with you this evening."
Sara smirked. "With a bunch of girls?"
Deion was having a bachelor's party out while the women were coming to Sara's hotel room for a few hours since she didn't feel like going out, still shook up from what could have happened a few days ago, and Melissa refused to have a party without both of her moms.
He smirked with his eyes glowing. "Well, I better get use to it since I'm going to be surrounded by them in the foreseeable future."
She chuckled as she cupped his cheek while asking softly. "And your completely happy about that."
He sighed in content and closed his eyes at her touch. "As much as I love our sons." He opened his eyes before finishing. "I've been hoping for that for a long time." He leaned forward and kissed her, and as she wrapped her arms around his neck, there was a knock on the door.
They sighed against each other's lips before pulling back slowly, and after a kiss on the forehead, he gets off the bed and heads towards the door, opening it to see Mike and Nicole standing there, and while Nicole smiled as she walked into the room, Mike stayed out in the hall with a smile. "I know why you would want to stay in tonight, but come on, man, a few hours won't hurt."
Before Grissom could speak, Sara's voice was heard. "He's right Griss, please go and have fun."
Mike started to smile when Nicole spoke with a smirk. "But no too much fun."
Now Mike's eyes was filled with love, which kind of shocked Grissom because he's never seen that look from him, or at least not since before the death of his fiancée, so he knew this thing between him and Nicole must be pretty serious.
"You know I would never do anything to ruin what we got."
Or speak like that, Grissom might add.
Now feeling shy, Nicole just nodded, then Grissom sighed before clearing his throat. "Alright, for a few hours." Then he turned and walked towards the bed so he could cup his wife's cheek. "Then I'll be back here with you."
Sara nodded. "Ok, be safe."
"I will, love you."
"Love you too."
They shared a sweet kiss while Mike asked with a smirk. "Have they always been like that?"
After Nicole chuckled, she commented 'pretty much' while both Sara and Grissom playfully told him to shut up.
Once the married couple finally pulled apart, he kissed her on the forehead before whispering his love while placing his hand on her stomach, then after he stood up straighter, they smiled at one another before he headed for the door so him and Mike can leave.
Hours later
It was a few hours longer than when Grissom said he would be back, but he had to admit it was nice hanging out with the guys, something he doesn't do very often, mostly because he is a very busy man, and whatever free time he does get he spends it with his family. Even the drinking part, but he still ended up being the most sober person at the bar so he felt it was his duty to make sure everybody made it back to their rooms safely, which Deion was sharing a room with his brother tonight.
Grissom softly closed the door to the darken room, turned around and walked past the bathroom before turning the corner, then he smiled at seeing his wife asleep in the middle of the bed with their sleeping boys on each side of her with their arms around their mother's stomach as if they were protecting their sisters. He lived to see moments like this, and it went right to his heart.
He takes a shaky breath while slipping his jacket off as he walked to the table that was in the room, then he placed his jacket on top of it and sat down in the chair, took his shoes off and just sat there watching the scene, he didn't want to do anything that will disturb them.
