Chapter eight:
As night falls Mello opens his door alert for any sings of anyone else. He is wearing jeans with a grey t-shirt knowing that a change of clothes is needed. He turns spotting movement in the darkness only to relax at recognizing Near.
Near is moving through the darkness as quietly as he can. He is wearing jeans like Mello and a dark red t-shirt.
The two have on runners that look newer as they save these for times like this. They use their more worn runners other times, as well as still enjoying walking without shoes as well, so that way they are known to wear those type of runners or having no shoes to those in the orphanage.
Mello comes out of his room fully and closes the door quietly. He goes with the other as they head to Matt's room. He opens the door letting Near in first as he glances around for any other movement. He then joins the two in the red heads room quietly closing the door behind himself.
Matt turns around from where he is in his chair that was facing his laptop. "Good to see you two." He whispers knowing the need to be really quiet. He grabs something off of his desk and shows the objects in his palm; illuminated by the light of his laptop. He has three black earpieces in his hand meant to help keep them connected. He can also track their movements with the little devices. He knows that it is better to have these than to try to text or call each other.
Afterall Mello and Near are leaving their phones in their orphanage bedrooms to not be tracked to the residence by that way. They are using this knowing that a link between the earpieces won't be looked for. They each put one in one of their ears turning it on.
Matt puts on his earpiece also turning it on. "Can you hear me?" He whispers and gains nods from the other two.
"I can."
"Me too." Near agrees with Mello and they can all hear each other on the earpieces.
"Okay. Good luck you two." Matt gives them a good luck smile then he turns back to his laptop.
Mello and Near sneak out of Matt's room closing the door behind them. They head towards the back door however they go for a window.
Mello manages to get the window open and the two slip through. He leaves it open as a way to get back inside when they come back.
Near has already started heading for where they can get out of the orphanages walls.
Mello following after him as they disappear into the trees. He lets Near climb the tree first so he can get over the wall. He then follows right behind him. He takes the lead knowing exactly where to go so the other lets him lead the way. He takes him to the fence where the blonde tries to unlock the gate. He finds that it has a normal lock on it. He flips it up and swings it open.
The two put on black ski masks to try to not be identified. They look to Rodgers home only seeing one light on. They move into the backyard closing the gate only to duck behind a shed. They peer around it with Near keeping low so Mello can stand over him. They watch as the light stays on for a few minutes longer before being turned off. With the house now dark they begin heading towards said home keeping low and quiet. They avoid the backdoor not wanting to risk that the light there is motion activated. They instead go to the side and use a flashlight on the low light setting to find a window. As Near holds the light Mello tries to open the window.
The window slides open after a few good tugs.
Mello tosses some baby powder to check for lasers that might trip an alarm only to find none.
The powder seems to disappear in the air and isn't obvious at all after a few moments.
Mello heads in first find the basement is unfinished. He sits on a wood frame against the wall. He uses a foot to pull an old chair with torn fabric close enough to use it to climb down.
Near follows after him and they go in two different directions to check out the basement first.
They move carefully and cautiously keeping alert for cameras or anything else that might give them away. They keep the flashlights on the lower level to help with that. They check everything they can for any signs of anything that might help them.
Near finds a desk. He opens the drawers only finding some paperwork for the orphanage that Rodger must have taken home with him at some point. He doesn't find any other type of papers so he moves on from the desk after making sure that the drawers are closed. He finds a deep freezer and a fridge that just has food in it. He heads back just in time as Mello, who had looked at some old furniture stored down there only to find them empty, was coming as well.
They go to the door where they can see the stairs leading up. They begin climbing them spotting a middle part where there is the front lobby then more stairs leading upwards. They stop upon hearing some footsteps. They crouch in the middle of the stairs that leads to the basement. They find the footsteps go quiet then a few minutes later a flushing sound is heard.
The footsteps return only to silence once again.
After a few moments the two begin moving once more. They get upstairs where it is still dark with the curtains and blinds closed. They split up as Mello heads towards what looks to be a hallway, while Near heads towards a living room that leads into a dining room.
Near notices that the main floor of the home seems to go in a circle as he bets that the kitchen is beside the dining room, even though he can't see it from here, then he probably could go to the entrance of the hallway Mello is checking. He turns his focus to the living room first and looks around until he spots the briefcase. He heads over to it and as it is on the wooden coffee table he crouches down. He checks it to find a lock. He takes a look at what can open it seeing that it is a password of numbers. He whispers at this. "Mello. See if you can find any codes with four numbers in it while you are in the hallway."
"Okay." Mello whispers back in the earpiece and he does a quick check of the bathroom, linen closet, as well as the closet that has jackets and sweaters. He doesn't see any code with numbers. He reaches the door that he is guessing must lead to the bedroom. He taps the door gently and sees that it swings open slightly as it wasn't properly closed. He turns off his flashlight quickly just in case Rodger is awake. He listens quietly for any sign of the other being awake or asleep.
