Shock to The System

Part 3

Harvey opened the door of he and Donna's spacious apartment. Lily followed him into the doorway and was surprised that it was dark and quiet on the Sunday morning. Just when Harvey was worried that his wife and the girls were away, he heard something drop on the floor and Donna starting to curse at it because she was trying to be prepare the twins for their grandmother's arrival. He supposed Donna was fussing because she knew he had not told Lily of her grandchildren's existence.

"Donna!" Harvey called. "We're home!"

"Just a minute!" Donna called back. She was glad in the new house that they were installing an intercom. The house was 3500 square feet so calling from one part of the house to another would be useless.

In the nursery, Mimi was being a little bit of a bug about fitting into her pretty yellow dress and the ribbons in her red hair. Donna knew she should have cut their hair but it was curly, red with gold highlights and she had not had the guts to do it. Many times, this meant that Donna had to get pieces of the girls' breakfast out of their hair. This time, Donna just took some baby scissors and cut the snagged hair and scrambled egg out of Mimi's hair. It would not make that much difference thank goodness. However, Mimi started to put up a fuss. She was usually the more complacent one.

"Mimi? Honey be good for mommy. I promise it will grow back," Donna cooed to her little one. Lily was in her part of the room bouncing her bunny up and down and then she left the room.

Donna looked around the nursery and was about to take Mimi and rush out of the room when she spotted her husband in the doorway with Lily in his arms.

"Were you trying to escape Lily? Were you coming to surprise your Grandmom?" Harvey teased his daughter as he held her little arm and talked to her. Lily put her head on her father's shoulder and smiled.

"Lily came out to meet us before I could do the introductions," Harvey said as he walked into the nursery with Donna who was still holding Mimi and smiling at her sister.

"I swear these two have a secret language and they planned it this way," Donna said.

"Yep, devious to the last. Just like their mother," Harvey said with a whisper to the last words before kissing her. "Hey."

"Hey," she responded. "Is your mom in the living room?"

"Yes. I think I caught Lily before mom saw her."

"I would have been out there earlier to greet you guys, but our daughters decided to incite a food fight instead of eating their breakfast. Didn't you, munchkin?" Donna said rubbing her head into Mimi's belly who smiled big and giggled.

"I thought I noticed food all over the kitchen. I'm making sure my girls play baseball with arms like that," Harvey said proudly.

Donna just rolled her eyes.

"Ok, I'll go out and present all three of you to mom," Harvey said eagerly.

"Sure," Donna said smiling at Harvey's back as he had put Lily on her feet and hurried back to the living room.

"Donna!"

"Ok, girls, show time," Donna whispered as she let Mimi climb down and then held one of each twins' hands in one of hers.

"Mom, I would like for you to meet Donna Paulsen Specter, my wife, and your twin granddaughters, Lily Amanda Specter, and Amelia Sarah Specter alias Mimi."

Lily sat on the couch and put a hand to her mouth as tears began to fall. She looked up at Harvey as he stood in front of her and quickly clasped his hand and squeezed. Before she could get up the twins went immediately to their grandmother without hesitation.

"Oh my God! Harvey, they're beautiful! Who is who?"

Harvey's eyes had misted over as he looked at Donna whose own eyes were filled with wetness, too. She quickly recovered herself and sat down on the couch next to her mother-in-law.

"I dressed them in different colors so you could tell them apart. Believe me, though, you will know without that soon," Donna addressed. "Lily is dressed in the pink dress and Mimi is dressed in yellow. If you are ever alone with them without knowing, Mimi has a birthmark on her shoulder." Donna wiped a tear away from her eyes.

"By the way, Lily, I am Donna and I am so happy that you are alive and here. I feel like I know you already just from the couple of conversations we had," Donna said.

"Hey, girls, let's give mommy and grandmom a couple of minutes, ok? Daddy brought you a present," Harvey said winking at his mom and taking Lily and Mimi's hands went to the high walled terrace outside in the autumn air to toss around the large round green plastic ball that Harvey found in Seattle's airport.

"I wondered who Harvey had bought that ball for when we were there. He told me it was for your nephew. I didn't know who he was talking about so I just let it go. Now I know," Lily said smiling as she watched her son toss the ball to one little daughter and then the other.

Focusing back on her daughter-in-law, Lily choked, "I am so happy that I am here and to see Harvey be a father."

"Harvey is an excellent father and husband. I always knew that he would be," Harvey's wife said. "He does have you to thank for that."

Lily hugged Donna and squeezed her tight.

"I'm so happy to meet you finally face to face. I always knew from Marcus and Gordon's reports that Harvey always loved you. I bet he put you through your paces. He has a way of doing that," Lily said still holding Donna's hands.

Donna nodded and then said, "It was all worth it."

Pausing for a moment they just looked at each other. Donna noted how Lily did resemble an older version of the few pictures of his mother that Harvey now possessed. The one framed picture which was used as part of Gordon Specter's one album only showed a partial shot of Lily's face. Lily Specter was still a fine looking woman with a youthful figure.

Lily looked at Donna and remembered the few pictures that Harvey had shown of her on his phone. Nothing matched the woman herself in person. Beautiful, warm, loving, and able to forgive an old woman for old sins which damaged her son. During one of their first conversations, Donna had told Lily. There's nothing for me to forgive. The situation is between you and Harvey. The only thing I could do was see that it no longer tore his heart apart to not be a part of his biological family especially when he needed that connection the most.

"Oh my God, I don't know where to start," Donna suddenly voiced. "I am so grateful to Marcus for calling me. Harvey was leery of what I told him, but it is a plausible mistake. He…we're so happy to have you here. I am so glad that Lily and Mimi will grow up with their grandmother."

"Thank you for saying that, Donna. I see that ring fit you perfectly."

"Yes, I have never taken it off since Harvey put it on my finger even through 20 hours of labor with those two."

Lily was quiet and just looked around the large living room and squeezed Donna's hand.

"How about I give you the short tour. Then we'll go to lunch and we'll drive you out to the 'burbs to show you the new house," Donna said squeezing Lily's hand in return.

"That would be lovely."

From the terrace, Harvey gave his wife a questioning look to confirm all was well. In response, Donna smiled and nodded that everything was fine.
