Chapter Eight: Fouquet And The Ring Of Destruction

It had been a solemn few minutes for the two. After all the tragedy that had happened. Their conversation had lasted quite a while, talk of childhood and what ifs.

"Louise." Karin spoke.

Genkai lowered her head staring. In front of her was a child's grave. Although it was empty, there had never been a body left to bury, only a split burnt wand.

"There was nothing you could have done, it was not your fault. What you did was correct." Genkai stated.

"But?"

"This isn't like you Karin. What happened to that carefree young girl I used to watch over?" Genkai asked.

"She was so much like you Genkai, and what with how father acted after that day... Do you think she will forgive me.." Karin faded, it was less a question and more a statement to herself.

"The rule of steel existed before that tragic day Karin, and it gave you the strength to move on. Father was always set in his idealistic ways of nobility."

"Still this grave no longer serves a purpose, it's now just a reminder of what I lost." Karin went to hug Genkai.

Genkai wanted to refuse, but comforting her sister was very important. "Come on we need to be heading to the capital Karin. I have stared over my own grave long enough."

And so the two older siblings left the shade of a single large tree, a small unmarked grave sitting neatly and well cared for beneath. Old flower petals could still be seen nearby.

Siesta had been meditating for a short period of time. She was frustrated about being forced to take a break. Her father had always ingrained in her that idle hands created sloth and made girls unable to find a husband. Something she did not wish to happen, she coveted her happiness. Sometimes she wished a gallant young man from a far away land would come and sweep her off her feet like in one of the novels she read.

As Siesta was finally entering a trance she heard a large Boom. "What was that!" Siesta bolted upright and shouted.

"Boom!"

"The nobles most be fighting again." Siesta thought. "Well I probably will now have a mess to clean up now." She thought as she started walking quickly towards the nearby noise.

When Siesta approached the void tower expecting to see some nobles using magic, instead she came across a large golem smashing at the tower. A person wearing a strange getup and mask was riding atop its shoulder.

"Where is everyone, or the teachers?" She thought while looking around.

"I should probably go find a member of the teaching staff." She thought right as she saw a carriage approaching from the distance.

The wall of the void tower finally gave way making Matilda smile. She was one step closer to attaining her prize. Watching the debris fly she heard a yell. Darting her eyes towards the yell she saw a pink haired noble being tackled by a crazy maid narrowly avoiding the falling stones that were once the void towers walls.

"Shit I can't afford to kill any noble brats, I'm a thief not a killer, what would SHE think?" Thought Matilda. "At least there not harmed, I'll get out of her after grabbing the ring, it should be in a finely crafted jewelry box." She thought again as she jumped into the open vault.

The last week for Kirche the Ardent had been humbling. While her body had gotten stronger each day, she still missed doing her normal activities. Having Tabitha to take care of her and look after her was nice, but Tabitha was not a conversationalist. Instead Kirche attempted to read like her friend, or took to thinking about the events that led to her current condition.

"Louise." She thought. What an enigma of a person and of magic. They had been rivals ever since they had entered school together in their first year at the academy. Kirche's attempts at befriending the small cute girl did not go as planned. Kirche liked to collect cute things. Her familiar Flame, the cute Salamander was an example of this. A perfect familiar for her, even if he was a bit small for his species. Then their was her best friend Tabitha, who, just like Louise, craved friends. At least the small cute Tabitha saw Kirche for a friend.

Louise however, she had never manged to get the small cute girl to see her as anything but either an enemy or rival. Still Kirche found ways to keep her around, interacting in the ways she knew best how. Still the nickname she had created for Louise had backfired in the first year. What was meant to be a cute nickname and a term for a friend became a hated repulsively name for Louise.

Still, Kirche only knew one way to stay near Louise, and so she kept up using her nickname. At this point the damage had been done and Kirche would try and break the ice with Louise as best she could, even if her teasing were not seen as they should be. The carefree prattling of a friend. Kirche's own family had put her through worse, driving her to the point of leaving home, she understood suffering quite well. Not that she ever let it get to her. She wanted to help her friend learn to accept and come to terms with hers, that way she could finally get over it.

With her injuries nearly almost fully healed, Kirche had asked to ride Tabitha's familiar dragon Slyphid with her. Once in the sky, Kirche hoped she could convince Tabitha to go to Louise home, it was a void day so their was no classes either. She had wanted to know more about Louise's familiar too. That old woman was powerful, and if she really was Louise's aunt. She had to apologize.

"Ready?" Tabitha stated while reading a book.

*Chapter Eight: Fouquet And The Ring Of Destruction*

Louise had landed roughly on a ground, the remains of her wand lost among the debris scattered across the ground. She was not that hurt, a few scrapes and bruises perhaps, nothing compared to what the carriage had wrought on her behind already. Still a heavy set of soft mounds were pressing against her back. This left Louise feeling trapped.

Pulling herself free, Louise took note not to injure or hurt the school maid who had been lying on top of her. She didn't remember the maids name, but she had been one of the more friendly maids at the school. Hopefully she was just knocked out and not, well. Dead, now that was morbid thought. Louise would have to remember the thank the maid later.

Their was no blood, that was a good sign, and the golem was no longer attacking the void tower as well. Still she was unarmed, and by the looks of things, someone was stealing from the void towers vaults. Where the hell were the teachers.

"Hand that over!" Louise heard an unknown voice yell.

*Chapter Eight: Fouquet And The Ring Of Destruction*

Matilda was angry, in her rush to get inside the vault, she had struck away most of its contents to the ground below. The ring of destruction could be mixed anywhere in the debris below. She did not have the time to waste looking through all of that. Thankfully she wouldn't have to, as she noticed the item she was seeking, a jewelry box, was sitting at that young noble brat's feet.

"Hand that over!" Commanded Fouquet. Matilda jumped back unto her golem.

Louise panicking looked down. At her feet was a rather plain looking jewelry box. Connecting the dots in her head, Louise realized this was what the thief was after.

Holding the box Louise loudly declared, "This is property of the Tristain Magic Academy you Thief!" she huffed.

Matilda would not be undermined by some small noble brat. She had loved ones to take care of. "I will not repeat it again, hand over the ring of destruction!"

*Chapter Eight: Fouquet And The Ring Of Destruction*

Tabitha and Kirche had been flying for a short time when the sound of several loud bangs coming from behind them sounded. The sound came from the direction of the Academy they had just left.

"What was that!?" Kirche shouted.

"Trouble." Spoke Tabitha. "Sylphid." Tabitha hugged her familiar as she spoke into the dragons ear.

With a dragons cry, the three of the banked to the right changing direction back towards the academy. The dragon coating them in a gust of magical wind.

*Chapter Eight: Fouquet And The Ring Of Destruction*

Louise knew she was in trouble, it was generally a good idea not to fight a triangle class mage unarmed. Her mouth had simply slipped, the rule of steal that was ingrained in her demanded justice be done to the thief. Still ideals where great, but getting yourself killed due to idealism was not. Still from what the thief had said, this jewelry box contained a powerful foci, perhaps she could use it in place of her wand?

Without a second thought, as doing so might result in a large golem crushing her, Louise opened the box and shoved a ring unto to her hand. It was do or die, Louise just focused on creating as big an explosion as she could.

*Chapter Eight: Fouquet And The Ring Of Destruction*

Matilda's aggravation had kept spiking. This damn noble brat was stubborn, every other one of her peers would have cowardly run away by now. Hell the little girl didn't even have a wand for Brimir's sake!

What was she doing? Matilda watched as the little noble picked up her jewelry box. Matilda was relieved that the girl was going to hand over her magic ring. Commanding her golem's arm down towards the small mage, Fouquet was about to sigh in relief when the brat opened the box and shoved the ring on her finger. "What was the brat doing!" Matilda internally shrieked in her mind.

As the golem hand nearly reached the small girl, her hand started to glow blue, precisely, her finger did.

*Chapter Eight: Fouquet And The Ring Of Destruction*

Kirche and Tabitha were nearly over the academy, in the distance they could see some kind of super large golem next to the void tower. Or at least they had.

"Boom!"

A sonic boom was released that rocked the dragon Slyphid and its passengers as they stared down below. What had been once a super large imposing golem was reduced to a thousands of flying fragments. A large blue beam of light had soared into the air parting the clouds in the sky.

"What the hell was that!?" The redhead gripped her blue haired friend Tabitha.

"Magic?" Was all the small blue haired girl concluded.

*Chapter Eight: Fouquet And The Ring Of Destruction*

The small mage fell flat on her face. Luckily her face landed right into a pair of comfortable soft air bags below. Matilda was not so lucky. During the resulting explosion she had been flung back into the vault. She would be heavily bruised, but fortunately she had used her magic in the last second to cover herself in rock hard clay.

Matilda pulled herself from the rubble. This was not good, nothing was left of her golem, not even its magical core. She needed to escape, or at the very least return back to the staff office. She wasn't sure if she could escape on foot. Her injuries were worse then she originally thought.

Still that stupid brat was knocked out on the ground below. Now was her chance to get the ring of destruction. Levitating herself carefully down from the tower, Matilda skillfully approached the young mage.

Everything was for naught however. The blasted brat had destroyed the damn ring, it was split in half and burning on the ground beside her. While the ring was a loss, at least she still had the bell of Slumber.

"Hold it right there!" Kirche yelled from atop a floating dragon.

"More of them!? Where do they keep coming from!" Matilda internally screamed in her head.

Matilda was done for today. With a swish of her wand she sank down into the earth below her.

"We need to catch her Tabitha!" Kirche yelled.

"Louise." Tabitha spoke as she pointed down below.

"Damn it." Kirche swore. "We better help her, she looks banged up.

*Chapter Eight: Fouquet And The Ring Of Destruction*

This day had gone to hell. A golem core lost, injured badly, and she didn't get what she originally went out of her way to steal. Dissolving her clay golem duplicate in the staff room, Matilda walked a few steps before falling and passing out. Her bruises would be seen as an unfortunate accidental fall by the other staff. Not that they would care about a commoner such as her. Such was the life of a commoner.
